Since 2008, Advantage Testing of Los Angeles has served the Los Angeles and the greater Southern California scholastic communities. Through our outstanding educational services, thousands of students have accomplished their academic and professional goals.
We develop individually tailored programs that complement each student’s schoolwork, helping them achieve success. Our students' ages range from six to 60: we offer tutoring for independent and selective public high school and middle school admissions exams, including the ISEE, the SSAT, and the HSPT; for college and graduate school admissions exams; and for a range of academic subjects.
Advantage Testing of Los Angeles maintains tutoring offices in Century City, Santa Monica, Sherman Oaks, Torrance, and Pasadena, providing our students with accessible and excellent learning environments. Some of our tutors can travel to students' homes, and all of our tutors can teach long-distance, having successfully instructed students throughout the country and the world. Contact us to discuss your tutoring options.
Each year, our tutors help countless students from families of limited means through our active financial assistance program. We have also partnered with local nonprofit programs, teaching college preparatory classes for students in underserved communities.
To best serve our community of learners during these challenging times, we are excited to introduce ATLA Foundations: Introduction to Advanced Coursework. These boot-camp-style online courses provide a foundational introduction to advanced academic classes, preparing students to start out strong in their AP, IB, CAS, and other high-level coursework.

I started in the 500’s and the tricks only help if you can eliminate answers yourself. But I didn’t know what to get rid of. My Advantage Testing tutor was really smart and really good at breaking down the questions. He focused on the subjects I didn’t know and taught me the material. Our SAT Tutoring Program Our educational approach to SAT preparation teaches the core concepts in critical reading, writing, grammar, and math required for solving the types of problems that recur on the test. We believe that preparing for standardized tests should not only improve scores but also equip students with the tools for enhanced performance across all their academic work. Through rigorous, long-term preparation, we emphasize learning the material thoroughly and thinking critically about every question. Weekly meetings, assignments, and full-length, proctored practice tests help our students develop a deeper understanding of concepts and refine their problem-solving techniques. Contact us to speak to a program consultant to discuss your goals and set up a diagnostic SAT. Program Length We tailor the precise length of our SAT program to the individual student based on multiple factors, including: The student's tutoring needs When the student begins working with us The student's goals The number of meetings the student has with the tutor each week The date the student plans to take the official test We strongly recommend that a student plan to work with a tutor for an academic year or more to cover the material at a reasonable pace. Reading and Writing Our Reading materials help students learn to extract essential information from a given text. We have developed a series of vocabulary-in-context word lists representing the high-utility academic words and phrases that are specifically tested on the SAT. Students become more attuned to the significance of word choice and more adept at discerning an author's meaning—essential skills that remain useful as students continue their academic and professional careers. Students master fundamental principles of grammar while developing a critical eye for spotting errors. They acquire skills that help them improve their accuracy on the SAT grammar questions and also identify and correct errors in their own writing. Math Our Math materials identify the mathematical terms and recurring math question types in algebra, problem solving and data analysis, and other math topics. Students will practice these concepts in targeted math worksheets, problem sets, and summary reviews. Should students take the SAT or the ACT? All major colleges accept the SAT and the ACT with equal preference. When deciding whether to take the SAT or the ACT, students should not speculate. Diagnostic testing and routine practice will dictate which test best suits the individual student. We generally recommend that students complete a few months of tutoring before selecting to prepare for either the SAT or ACT. During this period, each student should take an SAT and an ACT diagnostic test . The results of the diagnostics in addition to the student’s preferences and goals will help us advise an appropriate test regimen. In the first few months of the program, our tutors focus on imparting the core material—including math concepts, grammar rules, and reading skills—relevant to both the SAT and the ACT. After deciding which test better suits each student’s goals and abilities, our tutors will incorporate materials specific to the student's chosen test and develop a rigorous practice test schedule. What are the differences between the SAT and the ACT? The ACT and the SAT are both prominent college admissions tests. Both assess the educational development of high school students and the ability to perform college-level work. However, the ACT and the SAT are different educational instruments with different emphases. As official tests move to remote proctoring and in situations where remote proctoring is not possible, our proctors are trained to remotely administer tests. Prepare for your remotely proctored practice test Contact us to schedule a remotely proctored practice test. Download and print the appropriate answer sheet or booklet for your test, and don’t forget to download and print a few copies of the essay sheet if you are taking a test with an essay. Before you begin, make sure you have a paper copy of the test or a link to view or take the test remotely. However, do not begin reading or working on the test before your proctored test session begins. Prepare a quiet room where you will not be interrupted or distracted while you take your test. If you are taking a test that allows the use of a calculator (e.g., ACT or SAT), have your calculator charged and ready. Use a desktop or laptop computer or tablet with a camera and microphone for your remote proctoring session. Once testing begins, mute your microphone to eliminate distractions and disturbances for you and other students. Keep the volume on so that you can hear the proctor’s instructions. Close all browser tabs and windows except the one with the proctoring session and, if you are viewing or taking your test online, the one with your test. Your proctor will tell you when to move to a new section or break and will give you time warnings if your test has time warnings. During breaks, feel free to mute both your microphone and camera. Remember that you may work only in the section being administered; do not look at or work on earlier or later sections in the test. We recommend that you also have a stopwatch or timer present to independently time the session, but the proctor will instruct you when to move from one section to another. Good luck! Most business schools and a few law schools also accept the GRE as an alternative to the GMAT. Our GRE Tutoring Program Our educational approach to GRE preparation emphasizes core principles in math, reading, logic, and writing underlying the content and skills measured by the test. We believe that standardized tests are opportunities for mastering concepts that not only prepare students for the test but also help them as they continue their academic and professional careers. Our GRE program is rigorous: weekly meetings, homework assignments, and full-length practice tests, including computer tests, focus on the study, refinement, and application of the material and problem-solving strategies. Contact us to speak to a program consultant to discuss your goals and schedule a diagnostic GRE. Program Length We recommend that students allow 3–4 months to prepare for the GRE General Test. Because students' backgrounds and schedules vary, longer programs may be advisable. We will develop an academic plan tailored to each student's particular needs. Law Schools Accepting the GRE A downloadable list of law schools that have announced plans to accept the GRE or GMAT is available here . Verbal Reasoning Verbal tutors teach critical reading techniques for extracting essential information from a given text and review the vocabulary tested on the GRE. Students practice problem-solving strategies for sentence completions, sentence equivalences, and reading comprehension. Quantitative Reasoning Math tutors provide a targeted review of the key concepts in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis that are tested on the GRE. We tailor our math instruction to each student's background, strengths, and weaknesses, even those who have yet to take math courses in college. Analytical Writing Tutors provide a set of guidelines for approaching the Analytical Writing section and teach the fundamental structure, critical reasoning, and fluidity of expression inherent in strong written composition. Students practice writing essays, gaining confidence in assembling a coherent, persuasive response in a limited period of time. Our tutors are available for GRE Subject Test preparation. The following guidelines are helpful not just for tutoring but for any online learning experience. Put your phone away While many smartphones are capable of video conferencing, they are not ideal for tutoring sessions that include both video and an online whiteboard. Additionally, they can receive distracting calls or texts during the meeting. We recommend using a computer or a tablet for online tutoring. However, we will work with students to create an ideal online learning environment, whatever their technical specifications. Use headphones with a microphone While your computer has speakers and a microphone, headphones work better for video conferencing. With headphones, you will be able to hear your tutor more clearly and with better focus. Additionally, the microphones built into many computers and tablets pick up all of the sound in a room. Using headphones with a microphone will ensure that your tutor can hear you more clearly as well. Plug in Video conferencing can quickly drain batteries. Be sure to plug in your device, or at least ensure that it is fully charged, before your tutoring sessions begin. Ensure your Wi-Fi network is strong and reliable. Turn off notifications and alerts We understand that it can be tough to disconnect, even for a couple hours, but receiving notifications during an online tutoring session is distracting. In order to get the most out of your time with your tutor, turn off notifications on the device you are using for video conferencing before you start your tutoring session. Apple users can turn on Do Not Disturb Android users can also turn on Do Not Disturb Microsoft Windows users can manage notifications by editing Quiet Hours in settings You should also close all browser tabs and windows except those containing the tools used for online tutoring (e.g., video conferencing, whiteboard, online materials). Find and prepare a workspace Students should have a quiet, well-lit, and ideally private space in which to tutor. High-traffic family rooms, such as the kitchen, can be distracting—it’s hard to concentrate on an online session when other conversations and activities are taking place around you. Make time before your tutoring begins to set up an ideal space for focused, productive learning, and make sure that everyone in your household knows not to disrupt you during your tutoring sessions. It is weighed at least as heavily as the undergraduate grade point average for admission to many selective law schools. Our LSAT Tutoring Program Our educational and comprehensive approach to LSAT preparation has led to dramatic score improvements, sharper reasoning skills, and heightened self-confidence. We evaluate each student's strengths and weaknesses, develop an individual program that meets the student's needs, and emphasize a thorough analysis of the exam itself. Through weekly meetings and homework, we present methods for identifying and understanding the specific question types encountered on the LSAT. Proctored, full-length practice tests provide opportunities for students to exercise techniques for solving problems on each section of the test. Contact us to speak to a program consultant about your goals and set up a diagnostic LSAT. Program Length Our LSAT program is long-term and rigorous. We recommend that students dedicate a few months to preparing for the LSAT. This thorough approach allows students to achieve their best possible results on this important exam. Law Schools Accepting the GRE/GMAT Several law schools have announced plans to accept the GRE or GMAT as an alternative to the LSAT. A downloadable list of these law schools is available here . Section Number of Questions Minutes per Section Content Logical Reasoning ~50 Questions, divided into two sections 35 Minutes each Identify and assess reasoning in given arguments Reading Comprehension 26–28 Questions 35 Minutes Critical reading comprehension of given passages Experimental (unscored and unidentified) Varies 35 Minutes Logical Reasoning or Reading Comprehension Additionally, students must complete the LSAT Writing test, a 35-minute essay prompt, at a time and place of their choosing (not at the official test administration). As of August 2024, the LSAT has two scored Logical Reasoning sections, one scored Reading Comprehension section, and one unscored and unidentified experimental Logical Reasoning or Reading Comprehension section. The LSAT no longer includes an Analytical Reasoning (Logic Games) section. Download LSAT Format and Timing as a PDF . How is the LSAT Scored? LSAT scores are scaled from 120 to 180, based on the test-taker's performance on the multiple-choice sections. The LSAT Writing sample is unscored, but it is sent to the applicant's selected law schools as part of the LSAT score report. When is the LSAT Taken? The LSAT is offered in June, July, September, October, November, January, February, March, and April (these dates may vary slightly) LSAT Testing Limits Starting with the August 2023 test administration, you are allowed to take the LSAT: Five times within the current reportable score period (approximately the last five years) Seven times over a lifetime Tests taken after September 2019 will count toward these limits. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, tests taken in May, June, July, and August 2020 do not count toward these limits. Additionally, LSAC will not allow anyone who has scored a 180 within the current and past five testing years to retake the test, even if they achieved this score before September 2019. Our ISEE Tutoring Program We take an educational approach to the ISEE, recognizing that it may be a student’s first significant standardized test. By teaching the core concepts—verbal reasoning skills, math concepts, critical reading methods, and vocabulary—that appear on the test, our students become confidently prepared for the test and their future academic work. Our tutors initially focus on the academic substance of the ISEE, with close attention to how the content relates to each student's prior schoolwork, strengths, and weaknesses. As the program progresses, students learn to apply this knowledge and problem-solving strategies through drills, homework, and full-length, proctored practice tests. Contact us to speak to a program consultant to discuss your student’s goals and schedule a diagnostic ISEE. Program Length We recommend that students start preparing for the ISEE several months before they intend to take the official test. We tailor our programs for each student based on diagnostic test scores and the student’s needs and goals. While the test format is relatively consistent, three versions of the ISEE are offered to students in different grades: Lower Level is for students currently in grades 4–5 Middle Level is for students currently in grades 6–7 Upper Level is for students currently in grades 8–11 Before deciding on whether to take the ISEE or SSAT, check the specific admissions requirements at the schools to which you are considering applying. Some independent schools accept either test, but many schools insist on one or the other. Many of our students have benefitted from preparing for and taking both the ISEE and SSAT. Though the two tests have slightly different histories, they are similar in content and in purpose. We will help you decide which test to take given your student’s strengths, weaknesses, and application goals. Download ISEE Lower Level Format and Timing as a PDF . What Is the Format of the ISEE Online At Home? The exam is the same length as the standard ISEE and tests the same content. It must be taken on a desktop or laptop computer (Windows or Mac). Students must take the test alone. A parent/guardian may be in the room to assist with the initial setup, but they must leave before the test begins. How is the ISEE Scored? The Verbal, Quantitative, Reading, and Math sections are each scaled from 760 to 940, with corresponding percentile ranks and stanines. Stanines are another ranking system in which the numbers 1–3 roughly represent below average, 4–6 average, and 7–9 above average. The essay is not scored but rather sent to schools along with the ISEE score report. The ISEE does not deduct points for incorrect answers. When is the ISEE Taken? The ISEE can be taken up to three times in an admission cycle, once per testing season: Fall (August–November), Winter (December–March), and Spring/Summer (April–July). Most independent high schools require students to take the ISEE during the academic year in which they submit their application, so we recommend that most students take the test in the Fall and Winter windows. The ISEE is given frequently throughout the year, both on a computer and in pencil-and-paper format. You can find dates at locations near you on the official ISEE website . To download this information as a PDF, click here . Is the ISEE Offered Remotely Now? As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, ERB now offers the ISEE At Home , a remotely proctored online exam. This option is only available to students applying to grades 5–12 and testing in the United States and Canada. Where possible, ISEE tests are also being administered at Prometric Test Centers and at scheduled paper test centers. Closures to test centers administering the test due to COVID-19 will also be posted on the official ISEE website . Some students seek tutoring to assist them with highly challenging classes they might otherwise be reluctant to take. Other students seek to explore subjects with greater rigor and depth than they might in a classroom setting. Still another group of students struggles in school and turns to tutoring to understand fundamentals and improve academic performance. We categorize our work with all such students as “academic tutoring.” When tutoring academic subjects, our tutors teach a systematic approach to learning that helps students develop the problem-solving and project-management skills required to absorb a semester or more of academic content. Our students also acquire a sense of confidence in tackling new challenges that remains with them throughout their academic and professional careers. For us, “academic tutoring” does not include any activity geared toward helping a student with a graded assignment (paper, project, etc.). We will not, for example, edit or review papers or take-home quizzes before they have been submitted for evaluation. Our instructors provide tutoring in a range of elementary, high school, college, and professional subjects. We offer both short- and long-term tutoring programs for academic subjects. Contact us if you are interested in a program for a subject listed below. We also tutor in some academic areas not listed here, so please feel free to inquire. Paul Siemens, director of Advantage Testing, Los Angeles, a tutoring and test prep company says, “In the admissions process, colleges have always weighed students’ accomplishments against their perceived opportunities. While it’s not an exact science, it is a reasonable and meritocratic approach to an intensely competitive process. The most competitive colleges will have very high expectations of a student who has grown up with many privileges, and modified expectations of students with perceived disadvantages.” In general, he thinks that the privileged students are generally expected to be able to score well on tests such as the ACT or SAT. He adds, “we have traditionally counseled students from independent or well-resourced schools to apply to test-optional colleges with test scores unless they have a very good reason not to.” But this year, since colleges are going the extra mile to demonstrate empathy and flexibility he believes they will likely take into account that students may have many reasons for not submitting test scores. “Nonetheless, it would still seem inevitable that students who do submit strong test scores in this landscape will be rewarded,” he says." Advantage Testing offers a Writing Instruction program designed to help students express themselves with precision and grace. Consulting with the student, tutors determine an individualized program by: Reviewing completed schoolwork to gain a sense of strengths and weaknesses Identifying the concerns and goals of each student Reinforcing material the student is studying in school Introducing efficient approaches to master higher-level written coursework Through guided exercises and homework assignments, tutors help students develop and advance logical arguments in writing. Tutors also teach the fundamentals of syntax, grammar, and paragraph development while enhancing a student's vocabulary. From organizing initial ideas to polishing the last of many drafts, students benefit from constructive and detailed responses at each stage in the process. Program lengths vary. Many students in this program are high school seniors who wish to improve their writing skills in preparation for college-level coursework. These students typically work with tutors during the second semester of their senior year.
