At WSP, phones stay cozily tucked away all day.
The result? Students who talk at lunch. Who make eye contact. Who aren't comparing themselves to curated social media feeds. Who sleep better, focus deeper, and form genuine friendships.

In the spirit of the Year of the Horse, we're gathering where the vines meet the stables—at Garrod Farms, a family-owned estate vineyard and equestrian center tucked into the beautiful Saratoga foothills. It's an intimate evening (just 120 guests) designed for connection, celebration, and collective action . Throughout the evening, you'll enjoy estate-grown wine , a BBQ dinner with abundant vegetarian options, live music , and dancing under the stars. There'll be a brief but meaningful program, stories from our community and a focused fund-a-need, but mostly, this is a chance to slow down, reconnect with fellow parents and educators, and remember why we chose this path. Food & Drink Tickets include 100% estate-grown Cooper-Garrod wine, dinner from Coyote Sergio BBQ with abundant vegetarian and vegan offerings, and dessert. Please note your dietary needs when purchasing your ticket. Live Music & Dancing Enjoy live performances by WSP’s student jazz ensemble, along with a special set from father-daughter duo Ruksana Varma (WSP alum) and Rajeev Kelkar (WSP alum parent). After dinner, Windy Hill Bluegrass Band takes the stage—and yes, there will be dancing! Who's Invited All the adults who make up our vibrant community: current parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and board members, alumni students and parents, friends, and supporters of WSP! What to Wear Elevated country: vineyard elegant meets stable chic. Sundresses with boots, tailored blazers, maybe a bolo tie—polished or playful works. Just wear shoes that can handle gravel and vineyard paths. A Note on Tickets We've intentionally kept this gathering intimate— 120 guests maximum —to prioritize connection over scale. Early Bird tickets offer a discount as a thank you for committing early and helping us plan. If the cost of a ticket is prohibitive, please reach out to
[email protected] —we want you there. And many thanks to those who sponsor tickets for others through our Gift-A-Ticket option! RSVP by May 4 We need to give our caterers and venue a final headcount by May 10th—please reserve your spot by then! How will this event raise funds for WSP? In the weeks leading up to the event, we're launching our Spring Fund-a-Need campaigns. We'll achieve as much of this goal as possible before May 16th, so when we gather at the vineyard, we can celebrate what we've accomplished together and close any remaining gap with joy and momentum. Exceptionally Well-Prepared. At WSP, every classroom is phone-free. Students build the skills, focus, and connections they need to approach technology with discernment and intention—not dependence and distraction. At WSP, we don't reject technology—we introduce it thoughtfully. Download "Raising Confident, Screen-Smart Kids" Download "Raising Confident, Screen-Smart Kids" In Silicon Valley, we're at the epicenter of innovation. But we're witnessing what unlimited screen time is doing to our children. ✖ Children average 7+ hours of screen time daily—more than they spend in school [1] ✖ Teen anxiety and depression have doubled since smartphones became ubiquitous [2] ✖ 71% of teachers report media use has hurt students' attention spans [3] ✖ 60% of teachers say screens have damaged face-to-face communication skills [3] The Science is Clear In his groundbreaking 2024 book The Anxious Generation , psychologist Jonathan Haidt reveals we're witnessing the first generation raised with smartphones from early childhood—and the effects are profound. [2] Haidt calls it " the great rewiring of childhood ." When children spend formative years primarily with screens rather than people, nature, and hands-on experiences, crucial developments suffer: Brain pathways change, affecting reading and imagination [4] Attention spans shorten from constant stimulation Social skills weaken without face-to-face practice [5] Mental health declines as screens replace real connection [2] On Neil deGrasse Tyson’s StarTalk podcast, Jonathan Haidt discusses the impact of technology on student development—and highlights Waldorf education as part of the conversation. ( Oct. ’25 ) WSP’s phone-free, slow-tech approach is a long-standing, developmentally grounded alternative. Preschool-Grade 5: Screen-Free What children need: To develop strong bodies, active senses, and rich imaginations Our approach: Days filled with singing, storytelling, painting, and handwork like knitting and woodworking. Students bake bread, tend gardens, and spend hours outdoors—climbing, building, playing, and exploring nature in all seasons. Learning happens through movement and rhythm, not worksheets. Every activity engages the hands, the senses, and the whole child. Why it works: This is when brains are developing most rapidly. Time spent climbing trees, painting, kneading dough, and playing with friends builds the neural pathways, physical coordination, and social-emotional foundations that screens cannot develop. Grades 6-8: Thoughtfully Limited What middle-schoolers need: Time to develop critical thinking and independence before digital immersion Our approach: Minimal, purposeful technology use. Learning happens primarily through hands-on work, discussion, and direct experience. Teachers occasionally project educational films or images, but classroom work is done by hand. At home, students learn to word-process reports and research topics online—but only after learning to evaluate credible sources. By 8th grade, students may incorporate digital tools into their culminating projects. Why it works: Students develop the capacity for deep focus, critical evaluation, independent thought, and discernment they'll need before technology becomes a daily tool. Grades 9-12: Tech as a Tool What high-schoolers need: Critical thinking skills and purposeful tech fluency for college and careers Our approach: Students use technology as creators and critical thinkers—building projects and films, analyzing data, coding programs, creating multimedia presentations, and examining how AI and social media shape language and bias. They learn to instruct AI, compare algorithmic outputs to primary sources, and distinguish between human and machine-generated work. Why it works: Students approach technology with discernment—using it to amplify their ideas, not replace their thinking. They graduate as skilled creators who understand both technology's power and its limitations. Our commitment to device-free learning continues to garner national attention. Click on the icons below for media highlights: “ But won’t my child fall behind? ” And other FAQs… Will my child be at a disadvantage? This is every parent's concern. Here's why the opposite is true: Digital skills are learned fast. Stanford research shows children who delay technology actually develop stronger digital literacy when they do engage, because they bring better critical thinking. [7] What's hard to build later? The World Economic Forum identifies the most valuable 21st-century skills as critical thinking, creativity, problem-solving, and emotional intelligence—not technical skills. [8] Silicon Valley leaders agree. Many tech executives—including those who designed the platforms dominating our world—choose low-tech education for their own children. They understand that early screens aren't necessary for tech success. [9] How does WSP prepare students for the modern world without technology? We are preparing them with skills that matter most: critical thinking, creative problem-solving, collaboration, and the ability to maintain their humanity amid constant technological change. Tech leaders often credit these exact qualities for their success. Don't students need devices for homework? In high school, students use technology purposefully for academics. Before that, homework emphasizes hands-on projects, reading, writing, and creative work that builds neural pathways screens cannot develop. Is this realistic for families in Silicon Valley? We don’t ask families to eliminate technology use at home. Instead, WSP offers children a refuge during the school day—an environment intentionally designed to support the full range of human capacities: attention, imagination, relationship, and independent thinking. Our approach is developmentally guided and age-appropriate. For younger children, we discourage screen use, while expectations evolve as students grow. Many Silicon Valley families choose WSP precisely because they understand technology’s power—and its limits—and value a school setting that prioritizes human development first. Will my child feel left out? WSP students form deep, authentic friendships through shared experiences - arts, music, sports, drama, projects. They're not comparing themselves to curated social media personas. They're learning to be comfortable in their own skin. Where Childhood Is Protected—and Highest Potential Is Realized There are many Waldorf schools around the world. What makes ours different? Waldorf School of the Peninsula is rooted in a 100-year educational tradition, but fully alive to the needs of families in Silicon Valley. We serve a diverse, globally minded community of professionals, creatives, and parents who want more than just strong academics—they want a school that develops the whole human being. Rooted in Purpose, Connected to Place With campuses in Mountain View and Los Altos, WSP offers a school experience that balances beauty with intellectual depth. Our learning environments are designed to reflect the developmental needs of each stage—from the nurturing rhythm of early childhood to the focused exploration of high school. Students are surrounded by art, movement, nature, and meaningful challenge. They don’t just study the world—they experience it with an innate passion. We Know Our Students, They Know Themselves At WSP, relationships are at the heart of everything. Many of our teachers stay with the same class for multiple years, building trust that supports both academic growth and emotional safety. Students are known, seen, and celebrated for who they are and who they’re becoming. High Expectations, Human Approach Our curriculum challenges students across every discipline—math, science, humanities, world languages, music, and the arts. From Honors Calculus and Atomic Chemistry to Shakespeare and World History, students explore advanced material through hands-on learning and deep discussion. We don’t teach to the test. We teach for life. Teachers Who Are Experts and Guides Our high school faculty includes researchers, musicians, designers, and Waldorf alumni. Over 80% of our high school teachers hold advanced degrees, and many bring real-world experience from careers in science, the arts, and business. This depth of knowledge enriches the classroom—and inspires students to think critically, creatively, and ethically. Real-World Readiness WSP students design their own career internships, complete independent research projects, and engage in immersive field studies—from geology expeditions to international cultural exchanges. These experiences foster independence, purpose, and intellectual maturity. A Launchpad for the Future WSP graduates attend leading colleges and universities, including UC Berkeley, NYU, Harvey Mudd, Georgetown, Pomona, and RISD. But more importantly, they enter adulthood with the capacity to think across disciplines, communicate with depth, and contribute with vision. A Diverse Community with Shared Values Our families come from across Silicon Valley and around the world. Some are new to Waldorf. Some are lifelong believers. What they share is a commitment to raising grounded, curious, and self-aware children in a world that often rewards the opposite. Many WSP parents work in tech, medicine, and design—and choose us precisely because we offer a thoughtful alternative to pressure, screens, and standardization. Explore WSP Book a Chat Why WSP? Vaccines have saved countless lives over the last century, have positively contributed to global health, the eradication of diseases like smallpox, and the near eradication of polio. Waldorf School of the Peninsula strives to ensure the safety and health of all the children in our school. We require parents to follow all state laws regarding immunization and provide valid immunization records upon enrollment from preschool (nursery) to 12th grade. Consistent with state immunization laws, the school is fully prepared to follow County or State requests to keep home children who are not completely immunized against a disease in the event of possible exposure. Vaccination throughout childhood is essential because it helps the immune system to develop protections before children are exposed to diseases. Maintaining a high vaccination rate helps protect the more vulnerable in our community such as parents and children with weak or failing immune systems, and infants who are not yet fully vaccinated. Blending the forward-thinking spirit of Silicon Valley with Waldorf’s time-tested principles, we prepare students to lead courageous lives. Each day, students cultivate their capacities to learn, think, and act with purpose. Our Educational Philosophy At Waldorf School of the Peninsula, we believe education is not just about preparing for college—it's about preparing for life. Our approach is rooted in a deep understanding of child development and a bold vision for the future. Here's what guides us: Whole-Child Learning We educate the head, heart, and hands —nurturing intellectual rigor, emotional resilience, and practical creativity. This integrated model helps students grow into capable, compassionate human beings. Developmentally Aligned We honor childhood. Our curriculum unfolds in harmony with the natural stages of human development—building strong foundations instead of rushing milestones. The result? Students who love learning and retain what they learn. Human-Centered, Tech-Conscious In the heart of Silicon Valley, we are not anti-tech—we’re pro-human . We introduce digital tools at the right time and in the right way, ensuring students have agency and discernment before fluency. Education for the World Ahead We foster curiosity, adaptability, and ethical thinking—qualities the future demands. Our graduates are not just academically prepared. They are grounded, imaginative, and ready to lead with heart and vision. Schoolwide Learner Goals Learning Students learn and develop their abilities with enthusiasm and interest. Creativity Students cultivate their natural capacities for creativity within the learning process. Reverence Students meet the world with wonder and awe. WSP is dedicated to providing an education that understands, embraces, and encourages the development of the child as a whole human being with a spirit, soul, and body. Our expected school-wide learning results reflect the essence of Waldorf education: each student who graduates from WSP has developed their capacities for learning, creativity, reverence, and citizenship . Citizenship Students demonstrate personal and social responsibility by acting with purpose and collaborating effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
