Welcome to
Amigos de Guadalupe
Center for Justice & Empowerment
We are a community-based nonprofit in East San José, and since 2012, we’ve been proud to walk alongside our neighbors. From housing support and immigration services to education programs and community advocacy, we’re here to help families build stability, find their voice, and thrive. Our mission is simple: empower families, uplift voices, and create a stronger, more equitable East San José, together!
Standing with Survivors
A Message from Maritza
En Solidaridad con las Sobrevivientes
Un Mensaje de Maritza
Dear Amigos Family,
I am writing to you with a very heavy heart. The New York Times has published an exposé of crimes and sexual violence committed by César Chávez, and I wanted you to hear this from me — directly, honestly, and with love.
We are shocked and deeply dismayed by this news. We grieve for the survivors. And we stand with them, fully and without hesitation.
We also want to acknowledge that this movement, which began in this neighborhood, was never the work of one individual alone. It was built by a community—by people who responded to the pain and suffering of their neighbors. This neighborhood — our neighborhood — is built by people like you. By farmworkers and mothers, families, students, by neighbors who showed up for each other, by organizers who refused to let this community be forgotten. That legacy belongs to this community, to us. It cannot be and will not be taken away.
Amigos de Guadalupe exists because justice demands it!
That has not changed. It will never change.
The work we do every day — sitting with a family in crisis, helping a child find their footing, standing between a neighbor and a system designed to exclude them — that is the real movement, we are the movement, we are Amigos. Not a name. Not a myth. Not a legend. You.
As more comes to light, we will hold space for grief and honest conversation. We will not rush past the pain — because confronting it is part of what justice requires of us. And we will keep showing up, as we always have, for our community.
¡Sí SE PUEDE! — now more than ever.
Con amor y solidaridad,
Maritza Maldonado
Founder and Executive Director
Amigos de Guadalupe, Center for Justice and Empowerment
Maritza Maldonado

Rooted in Community Our Core Belief We believe everyone deserves to live in a just and equitable society where every person is empowered to achieve their dreams. Our Vision Inspired by the power of our vibrant, determined community, our vision is to bring about transformational change in East San Jose. Our Mission At Amigos, we ensure that the basic needs of our community are met, deliver high-quality programs, and mobilize and organize for justice. Our Services We do this by providing housing and rental assistance, legal immigration services, education programs, mental health services, and community organizing programs that advocate for systems change. Our Story Once, people in East San José’s Mayfair neighborhood would say, “Sal si puedes”—“Get out if you can.” It spoke to the hardship families faced, struggling to build a better life with few resources. From that struggle, Amigos de Guadalupe was born in 2012 . Rooted in the welcoming spirit of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Amigos grew from a small neighborhood effort into a vibrant hub serving families across East San José and Santa Clara County. Inspired by the voices of leaders like Dolores Huerta, Blanca Alvarado, and the immigrant families who paved the way, we work to break the cycle of poverty through transformational systems change work and basic needs services. Today, “Sal si puedes” has become “¡Sí Se Puede!” —a reflection of hope, strength, and community. Together, we walk alongside families as they find stability, raise their voices, and thrive. 1897 Alum Rock Avenue, Suite #35 San Jose, CA 95116 (408) 341-6080 |

Living in a clean, supportive environment has given us a second chance to rebuild our lives. While the journey has been difficult, I feel stronger than ever and hopeful for the future. Thanks to the support of Amigos de Guadalupe and this program, we now look forward to moving into a stable home where we can dream again. Casitas de Esperanza truly lives up to its name—a home of hope." Averalo Family "We became homeless in early 2024 and faced months of uncertainty and setbacks. Thanks to the support of HereForYou and the dedicated staff at the Family Shelter, we finally found a safe place to call home. Through every challenge, their guidance and care gave us hope. My children now have a place to sleep, and I am forever grateful to everyone who helped us—this is a blessing we will always carry." A Mother’s Strength: Regina’s Journey "Hello, my name is Regina. I’m a single mother of two. After serious health challenges and the loss of a child, we became homeless and struggled to survive. Through the Here For You hotline, Amigos de Guadalupe found us a space at the Family Shelter, and for the first time in months, we felt safe and at home. While at the shelter, I earned a caretaker certificate, found a job, and began working toward my dream of starting a nonprofit for families with hospitalized children. My message: ‘Don’t give up. Keep going—you are stronger than you think and bigger than the struggle.’" 1897 Alum Rock Avenue, Suite #35 San Jose, CA 95116 (408) 341-6080 |

Amigos de Guadalupe’s Neighborhood Prosperity Project A neighborhood-led movement to end poverty in Mayfair — and the foundation for a 10-year national effort to end concentrated poverty without displacement. Join the Movement Explore 10 Year Plan Why Si Se Puede Mayfair Matters A neighborhood with a legacy of organizing and resilience. In the Mayfair neighborhood, families have spent generations navigating disinvestment, low wages, and rising costs of living. Yet Mayfair has always been a place of profound resilience, cultura, and community strength. Si Se Puede Mayfair builds on that legacy. It is a neighborhood-led organizing effort that brings residents together door by door and block by block to shape a future where every family can prosper. By centering resident leadership, Si Se Puede Mayfair is taking direct aim at poverty in our neighborhood and showing what becomes possible when communities lead their own change. What we are building in Mayfair is also helping us imagine what's possible in neighborhoods nationwide. Our hope is that the strategies, relationships, and lessons emerging from Si Se Puede Mayfair will become a blueprint for the Neighborhood Prosperity Project — a 10-year plan to end concentrated poverty without displacement by supporting and organizing communities across the country. Our National Vision The Neighborhood Prosperity Project Amigos de Guadalupe envisions a nation where every neighborhood is a place of opportunity, dignity, and prosperity. To achieve this vision, we must build a nationwide movement of organized neighborhoods working together to eradicate concentrated poverty and create lasting change—a movement inspired by the grassroots organizing legacy of the farmworker movement and grounded in the Mayfair neighborhood where that historic work began. There are Mayfairs all across America — resilient yet overlooked communities ready for transformation. Our work in Mayfair will prove that change in one neighborhood can spark change everywhere. As Mayfair goes, so goes the nation. Amigos aims to become the go-to resource for communities, policymakers and funders committed to neighborhood transformation. By 2035 , we seek to work alongside neighborhoods across the nation to turn this vision into reality. This national effort will be known as the Neighborhood Prosperity Project. Our Current Initiatives Building a model to end concentrated poverty without displacement. The Neighborhood Prosperity Project is still in its early years, but the momentum is real. As we walk alongside Mayfair families, we’re building a place-based model that can be adapted for other underinvested neighborhoods. 1. The Neighborhood Prosperity Project is about more than metrics. It’s about families like Yolita’s, who are turning opportunity into lasting change. HECHO EN MAYFAIR Yolita’s Story When Yolita joined Hecho en Mayfair, she had a dream — but little path forward. With coaching, pricing support, and procurement opportunities, she increased her revenue by $100,000 within four months. Because of the program, she brought her mother into the business, could stop juggling multiple jobs, and began planning for a stronger future in her community. “I have no words to express my gratitude,” she told San José Spotlight. This is what neighborhood prosperity looks like: families gaining the stability and time they need to dream, build, and give back. Want to go deeper into the story? Policy & Organizing Building community power to advance justice and equity through grassroots organizing and policy change. At Amigos de Guadalupe, we believe lasting change starts with the people most impacted by injustice. Our Policy and Organizing work centers immigrants, families, and residents of East San José to advance policies that protect dignity, strengthen families, and build community power. Rooted in lived experience, our team of community members, organizers, and advocates works alongside residents to challenge harmful systems and create meaningful change. Through leadership development and grassroots organizing we build shared power and push for justice at the local and state levels. What we do: We organize, educate, and advocate to create systems-level change. Our work includes: Community Organizing: Supporting residents to come together around shared issues, build leadership skills, and take collective action. Policy Advocacy: Advocating for local, state, and federal policies that protect immigrant rights, expand access to services, and promote housing stability and economic justice. Civic Engagement: Creating spaces for community members to engage with elected officials, participate in public meetings, and make their voices heard. Coalition Building: Partnering with community-based organizations and advocacy networks to strengthen collective impact. Our work is guided by the belief that those closest to the challenges are also closest to the solutions. How you can get involved: Change is possible when we move together. There are many ways to be part of our Policy & Organizing work: Join a Committee or Campaign: Participate in organizing efforts focused on immigration justice, housing, and community safety. Attend Community Meetings & Forums: Learn, share your voice, and connect with neighbors and leaders. Become a Community Leader: Take part in leadership development opportunities and training. Welcome to Amigos de Guadalupe Center for Justice & Empowerment We are a community-based nonprofit in East San José, and since 2012, we’ve been proud to walk alongside our neighbors. From housing support and immigration services to education programs and community advocacy, we’re here to help families build stability, find their voice, and thrive. Our mission is simple: empower families, uplift voices, and create a stronger, more equitable East San José, together! Standing with Survivors: A Message from Maritza Standing with Survivors A Message from Maritza En Solidaridad con las Sobrevivientes Un Mensaje de Maritza Dear Amigos Family, I am writing to you with a very heavy heart. Yesenia | Asylum "The Immigration Attorneys reviewed my case carefully and found I was eligible to apply for permanent residency. With their support, I gathered my documents, completed the forms, and submitted my application, and ultimatelyI received my permanent residency card. That moment brought me so much peace and a sense of security I had been waiting for since arriving here. To anyone currently going through their own immigration process, I want to say: Don’t give up. Keep fighting for your case. It is possible to reach this goal, just as I did." Work Permit for T42 Family "I walked from Venezuela to the U.S. in search of stability and safety. I sold flowers on the streets to afford my work permit filing fees while my family took refuge at one of Amigos' emergency shelters. Today my wife and I have jobs, and we are saving up to rent our own place." Turning Struggles into Stability “Before working with the BFH program through Amigos de Guadalupe, I was facing homelessness again with a newborn and felt completely overwhelmed. With the guidance and support of my case worker and the program, I learned how to navigate the housing search, advocate for myself, and build relationships with landlords. After months of searching, we were able to find a safe, stable home in the neighborhood where I grew up—close to family. The program didn’t just help us find housing—it gave my little family a chance to stay together and build a better future.” - Aurora, Former Bringing Families Home Member 1897 Alum Rock Avenue, Suite #35 San Jose, CA 95116 (408) 341-6080 |
