What is Ananda? (5-min video)
MEDITATION

Skilled instructors with personal life-long practices will help guide you, from sitting comfortably to learning how to calm the mind and the heart. Whether your interest is meditation as a spiritual practice, or for stress reduction and health, you will feel at home in an Ananda meditation class. If you can’t join us in person, we also offer online classes.
YOGA: ANCIENT TOOLS FOR SELF-MASTERY
What is Yoga?
Though most people think of yoga as physical postures, yoga is an ancient and powerful tool for spiritual development. The science of Raja Yoga is a comprehensive approach to life that includes meditation, postures, philosophy, devotional practices, healthy living, and much more. It helps us to develop inner strength, a calm, compassionate heart, and deepening awareness of our spiritual nature.
Drop in on yoga postures classes, for greater health and flexibility. Ananda Yoga is an approach to postures that helps develop greater inner awareness. We offer a full schedule of drop-in yoga postures classes for beginners and advanced students.
TRUTHS SHARED BY THE GREAT RELIGIONS
Paramhansa Yogananda (left) and his disciple, Swami Kriyananda • Our spiritual lineage
Sunday services include comparative readings and talks from the Bible and the Bhagavad Gita (one of India’s most beloved scriptures). The emphasis is on the underlying truths shared by the great religions. Our service is based on the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda, author of the spiritual classic, Autobiography of a Yogi and his direct disciple, Swami Kriyananda.
Yogananda’s teachings are delightfully free of dogma; he encourages spiritual seekers to test the ideas he shares in the laboratory of their own lives. His God is “nearer than the near; dearer than the dear” — knowable as the closest friend. Through meditation and uplifted consciousness in daily life (awareness, kindness, openness), we become more aware of ourselves as spiritual beings; less bound by our individual drives and ego tendencies. People of any faith are welcome, and may find the services are a place where they can take their own faith and understanding deeper.
“
“Here, I am finding answers to questions I have asked for decades. Thank you for shining your love like a lighthouse, guiding me home.”
— D. B.
MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS WITH OTHERS
One of the most frequent comments by visitors is, “I feel so much joy here!” The smiles you’ll meet are genuine. Ananda is a place of music, laughter, deep spiritual fellowship, and a refreshing sense of humor.
“
I felt at home the moment I heard the music. So much joy. I felt tears of gratitude to have found what I was seeking after a lifetime of searching.
— Karen K, Mountain View

While it may be less natural for Americans to seek guidance in spiritual realms, it is hard to imagine how one can navigate the complexities of our minds and our unique karma without expert help. Mystics of all the great religious traditions recognize this spiritual truth. For this reason, the teachings of Self-realization have been passed from guru to disciple through a lineage of teachers that stretches back thousands of years. Explore more: Who needs a guru? “ “The purpose of the guru is not to weaken your will. It is to teach you secrets of developing your inner power, until you can stand unshaken amidst the crash of breaking worlds.” —Paramhansa Yogananda ” Jesus Christ “In the divine plan, Jesus Christ was responsible for the evolution of the West, and Krishna (later, Babaji), for that of the East. It was intended that the West specialize in developing objectively, through logic and reason, and that the East specialize in inner, intuitive development. But in the cosmic plan the time has come to combine these two lines into one. East and West must unite.” —Paramhansa Yogananda, Autobiography of a Yogi The presence of Jesus on the altar is more than just a courtesy to Westerners. Yogananda said it was Jesus himself who appeared to Babaji and asked him to send this teaching of Self-realization to the West. Jesus said to Babaji, “My followers have forgotten the art of divine inner communion. Outwardly they do good works, but they have lost sight of the most important of my teachings, ‘to seek the kingdom of God first.’” Babaji-Krishna Babaji means “Revered Father” and is described by Yogananda in his Autobiography of a Yogi as “the deathless guru.” Babaji is of unknown age, and lives in the Himalayas with a few highly advanced students. Yogananda called him “Babaji-Krishna”, saying that Babaji was Krishna in a former incarnation. Seeing that in the present scientific age, people were better prepared to receive higher knowledge, Babaji directed his disciple, Lahiri Mahasaya, to reintroduce the meditation science of Kriya Yoga to the world. Lahiri Mahasaya (1828-1895) After his initiation by Babaji in 1861, Lahiri Mahasaya continued to live the modest life of a married householder in Varanasi, India. He set an ideal example of balanced living, attending to both his worldly and his spiritual duties. Over the years, as he meditated quietly in his front room, thousands came to him for initiation into Kriya Yoga. One of his foremost disciples was Sri Yukteswar, the destined guru of Paramhansa Yogananda. Lahiri is his family name; Mahasaya means “large minded.” One of Yogananda’s chief aims in writing Autobiography of a Yogi was to share the life of Lahiri with the general public for the first time. Sri Yukteswar (1855-1936) “He fitted the Vedic definition of a man of God. ‘Softer than the flower where kindness is concerned, stronger than thunder, where principles are at stake.’ He taught by sublimity of example alone the true measure of a man.” —Paramhansa Yogananda, Autobiography of a Yogi Yukteswar was a disciple of Lahiri Mahasaya, and Yogananda’s guru. An “incarnation of wisdom,” he possessed a keen intellect and discrimination. He received two commissions from Babaji. One was to write “a short book on the underlying unity between the Christian and Hindu scriptures, to show that the inspired sons of God have spoken the same truths.” This book is The Holy Science. The second was to train Yogananda for his mission to the West. Early in life, Yukteswar was married; later he became a renunciate and lived in his hermitage near Calcutta, India. Sri is a respectful title meaning “holy.” Yukteswar means “united to Ishwara” (the name of God in his aspect as the Cosmic Ruler). Paramhansa Yogananda (1893-1952) “The vibrations of many spiritually seeking souls come floodlike to me. I perceive potential saints in America and Europe, waiting to be awakened.” Said Babaji to Yogananda: “You are the one I have chosen to spread the message of Kriya Yoga in the West.” —Paramhansa Yogananda, Autobiography of a Yogi Yogananda came to America in 1920 not to “dogmatize you with a new theology,” as he later told his students, but “to teach you how to commune with God directly.” He lectured to hundreds of thousands throughout the country. His Autobiography of a Yogi, first published in 1946, has become one of the most well-read spiritual books of the last century, and a classic of religious literature. He was devoted to helping unite East and West by bringing the original teachings of yoga to the West, and showing their underlying unity with the original teachings of Christ. He advocated the founding of what he called “world-brotherhood colonies” where people could live together in spiritually supportive communities. Yogananda means “Divine Bliss through Yoga.” Paramhansa means “highest swan.” The white swan or hansa is said to have the power of extracting only milk (wisdom, enlightenment) from a mixture of milk and water (the mundane world), and is a symbol of spiritual discrimination. Founder and spiritual guide Swami Kriyananda (1926-2013) Direct disciple of Yogananda since 1948 Swami Kriyananda is the founder of Ananda. He is not on the altar, but is revered by seekers as a model of discipleship, and a “friend and guide” on the path. He had a great gift for helping people grow personally and spiritually, as countless students can attest. At his guru’s request, for 65 years and until the day of his passing, he devoted himself tirelessly to lecturing, writing, counseling, and guiding many students worldwide. In 1968, inspired by Yogananda’s dream of spiritual communities, he founded the first of what are now many Ananda communities and teaching centers worldwide where people can devote themselves to the practice of Self-realization. His books in 28 languages have touched millions, and his music is an integral part of Ananda worship services. A treasury of lectures are freely available at www.ananda.org and on YouTube . Learn more about Swami Kriyananda Swami’s spiritual successor Nayaswami Jyotish Swamiji named Jyotish his spiritual successor; he assumed the role upon Swamiji’s passing in 2013. Jyotish is warm, thoughtful, and wise—with a delightful sense of humor. He and his wife, Devi, travel widely, and have dedicated nearly 50 years to sharing inspiration and insight gained from a lifetime of dedication on the spiritual path. They serve as spiritual directors of Ananda’s activities worldwide. Since the beginnings of Ananda, Swami gave Jyotish leadership responsibility for major aspect of Ananda’s work. He has been part of the development of nearly every aspect of Ananda, and has a wealth of practical wisdom—how to develop organizations, and especially how to develop people. Jyotish is the author of How to Meditate , Lessons in Meditation , Thirty Day Essentials for Career , and Thirty Day Essentials for Marriage . This blissful consciousness is the underlying reality of all existence; it precedes the very manifestation of the universe. 2) We believe that man’s highest duty is to realize himself as an expression of all-pervading Satchidanandam (Satchidanandam is Sanskrit for Ever Existing, Ever-Conscious, Ever-New Bliss). We embrace the way to this Self-realization through the inner silence, above all, of daily communion with the infinite Self. We embrace, for ourselves, the need to embody this realization in our own lives by daily performing at least one specific, conscious, personally selected act of service to our fellow beings. We embrace—again, for ourselves, since we seek not to impose our understanding on others—the need to honor all, whether friends or self-named foes, as manifestations of the eternal Satchidanandam, and to see them as our brothers and sisters in that Supreme Consciousness which is variously called God, Ishwara, Allah, or Jehovah. We recognize all names for that Supreme Being. We embrace the need to give back to our Supreme Source by offering up every ego-attachment and self-limiting identity in daily acts of service to others. We seek as our primary goal in life the state of actual, conscious union with Satchidanandam. We aspire to make our own lives works of art, whether through music, through the visual arts, or through the simple deeds of our daily existence, with a view to expressing the bliss that is latent in our deeper selves. We seek to make our every thought and action a radiation outward from the center of our being, and not to allow ourselves to become superficial reflections of the thoughts and actions of others. 3) We seek never to convert anyone to our specific cause except, in love, to inspire all with the desire to reclaim the bliss of their own being. 4) We seek fellowship with others willing to join hands with us in this loving labor for universal upliftment. Thus, by our united efforts, our hope is to share inspiration with ever-increasing effectiveness. 5) We recognize that, whether or not others join us consciously in this labor, all human beings, each one individually, serve the Eternal Purpose, doing so by the simple act of seeking, whether ignorantly or wisely, the bliss of their own being. We condemn no one, therefore, for ideas he may hold that are different from our own, but embrace all as fellow seekers of Ultimate Bliss. 6) We recognize that the way of Ananda Sangha is primarily inward, not outward; that it leads one by the universal pathway of the spine to the high state of communion with God at that point in the forehead which lies between the eyebrows. We follow this path by the daily practice, after receiving it, of the non-sectarian science of Kriya Yoga , as it was named by its reviver in the nineteenth century, Yogavatar Lahiri Mahasaya of Varanasi. The aim of Kriya Yoga is to withdraw one’s energy and consciousness from the senses to the spine, and to lift the awareness to conscious union with the Supreme Reality: Satchidanandam. Those who practice this sacred science are known as Kriyabans. The Kriyabans of Ananda Sangha offer special respect, honor, and reverence to those who inspired the promulgation of Kriya Yoga in modern times: Jesus Christ, Mahavatar Babaji (who was, as he has informed his close disciples, Bhagavan Krishna in a former incarnation), Lahiri Mahasaya, Swami Sri Yukteswar, and Paramhansa Yogananda, ambassador of Kriya Yoga to the West and promoter of the underlying oneness of Hinduism, Christianity, and, consequently, of all the great religions of the world. Kriyabans revere the great saints of all religions, but give special reverence and obedience to the line of gurus on whose lives and teachings we pattern our own lives. A young man on a spiritual search He was a young man of considerable intellect and a burning desire for truth that isolated him from most of his peers at the time. It was 1948, and life in post-WWII America was a desperate scramble for normalcy. Millions of young people were seeking home, family, and career—anything that could sooth the horrors of war and the insecurity of the Depression. But James Donald Walters knew that kind of life would not bring him what he was looking for. He was hungry to know what life was really about. Why we lived, what we were here to understand. Was there a Truth that could be known? He hadn’t found it in philosophy, churches, nature, or simple living, though he had tried them all. The first wave of what would later become many spiritual teachers from the East began in America in the 1890s with a lecture tour by Vivekananda. Paramhansa Yogananda (1893–1952) followed soon after, and became the first Indian yogi to make his home in America. Though he met two Presidents and lectured to many thousands around the country for years, it wasn’t until his Autobiography of a Yogi was published in 1946 that Yogananda became known to a much wider audience. Eastern spirituality was just beginning to awaken Western minds in the 20th century with the possibility of direct, personal experience of transcendent spiritual realities. Ideas like meditation and yoga were introduced to Americans by these two early yoga masters. Swami at a birthday celebration in 2012. He passed away April, 2013 at the age of 86. He was a disciple of Yogananda for 65 years. Swamiji’s last talk before his passing, Easter Sunday, 2013 in Assisi, Italy (Italian with English subtitles) What are we really seeking in life? What is God? What is true peace? San Jose Performing Arts Center, July, 2008 (audio below) Swami Kriyananda: A Life in God Swami Kriyananda: Remembrances late in his life first meeting with HIS guru Walters read the Autobiography virtually without stop, and was overcome with the certainty that the author knew how to find what he was seeking. He boarded a bus and traveled cross-country for three days and nights to arrive at a Self-Realization Fellowship church where Yogananda had just lectured. Yogananda agreed to meet him because “Divine Mother told me to see you.” In that first meeting, he accepted the young man as a disciple. From Kriyananda’s description of that meeting in The New Path: Gazing at me now with deep love, Yogananda said, “I give you my unconditional love.” Immortal promise! I couldn’t begin to fathom the depth of meaning in those words. “Will you give me your unconditional love?” “Yes!” “And will you also give me your unconditional obedience?” Desperately though I desired acceptance, I had to be utterly honest. “Suppose, sometime,” I asked, “I think you’re wrong?” “I will never ask anything of you,” he solemnly replied, “that God does not tell me to ask.” Swami meditating in India He continued, “When I met my master, Sri Yukteswar, he said to me, ‘Allow me to discipline you.’ ‘Why, Sir?’ I inquired. ‘Because,’ he replied, ‘in the beginning of the spiritual path one’s will is guided by whims and fancies. Mine was, too,’ Sri Yukteswar continued, ‘until I met my guru, Lahiri Mahasaya. It was only by attuning my haphazard will to his wisdom-guided will that I found true freedom.’ In the same way, if you attune your will to mine, you too will find freedom. To act only on the inspiration of whims and fancies is not freedom, but bondage. Only by doing God’s will can you find what you are seeking.” “I see,” I replied thoughtfully. Then from my heart I said, “I give you my unconditional obedience!” My Guru continued: “When I met my master, he gave me his unconditional love, as I have given you mine. He then asked me to love him the same way, unconditionally. But I replied, ‘Sir, what if I should ever find you less than a Christlike master? Could I still love you the same way?’ My master looked at me sternly. ‘I don’t want your love,’ he said. ‘It stinks!’” “I understand, Sir,” I assured him. He’d struck at the heart of my greatest weakness: intellectual doubt. With deep feeling I said to him, “I give you my unconditional love!” He placed the forefinger of his right hand on my chest over the heart. For at least two minutes his arm vibrated almost violently. Incredibly, from that moment on, my consciousness in some all-penetrating manner was transformed. I left his interview room in a daze. Norman, on hearing that I’d been accepted, embraced me lovingly. It was unusual, to say the least, for anyone to be accepted so quickly. A few moments later, Master came out from behind the open curtain on the lecture platform. Smiling at us quietly, he said: “We have a new brother.” A life of service Unlike the 1960s when many young people were drawn to Eastern teachers, few came to live in Yogananda’s monastery in the 40s and 50s. And relatively few stayed. It was a life of long, daily meditation and service to others. But Walters blossomed. He had a natural capacity for deep meditation, a penetrating mind, an openness to learning, and a burning desire for truth. Yogananda knew one of his own had come. He soon made 22-year-old Walters head of the male monastics, brought him to his desert retreat to help with editing his writings, and told him on several occasions, “You have a great work to do.” He spent many hours talking about the teachings of Yoga to his young disciple, and said that he would become a writer and a teacher. When Walters protested that he didn’t feel adequate to the task of teaching, Yogananda replied sternly, “Living for God is martyrdom!” And then more gently he added, “You’d better learn to like it, for that is what you will have to do.” And thus began a life of service to his guru that can scarcely be imagined, except that hundreds of people personally witnessed it, some for as long as 40 years themselves on the path, working shoulder to shoulder with him. For a span of nearly 65 ceaselessly busy years, Walters (Swami Kriyananda) expended every ounce of energy in fulfilling his guru’s work. That included writing some 150 books, teaching nearly continuously in America, Europe, and recently also throughout India to audiences in Ananda Top Home Classes & Events Monthly calendar Classes & Events Yoga Postures Meditation Kriya Yoga Raja Yoga Families & Children Music & Kirtan New Page Worship Online Inspiration Online Courses Most recent audio-video Musical Favorites About What is Ananda Spiritual lineage Teachers & staff Ananda Community Member gallery Contact Donate Home Classes & Events Monthly calendar Classes & Events Yoga Postures Meditation Kriya Yoga Raja Yoga Families & Children Music & Kirtan New Page Worship Online Inspiration Online Courses Most recent audio-video Musical Favorites About What is Ananda Spiritual lineage Teachers & staff Ananda Community Member gallery Contact Donate See more Back to Top Ananda — a place of awakening Ananda Temple & Teaching Center 2171 El Camino Real Palo Alto, CA 94306 (650) 323-3363 Contact us Ananda Community 240 Monroe Drive Mountain View, CA 94040 (650) 941-9507 Serving the San Francisco Bay Area, including the Peninsula, Silicon Valley, and San Jose, CA © Ananda Ananda is just south of Stanford University at the intersection of El Camino and College. If you have been uninspired by most church services, you may find these uplifting to the heart. Newcomers are welcome. Drop in any time, or watch online . Sunday mornings: What to Expect Our service draws inspiration from both the Christian Bible and the Bhagavad Gita. Service includes music, group chanting and meditation, an inspirational talk drawn from the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda , and a unique blessing ceremony called the Festival of Light . Our hearts and our sanctuary are open to truth seekers of all traditions and orientations, people exploring meditation for the first time, and anyone who seeks a deeper understanding of the meaning and purpose of life. Before service begins at 10 am, you are welcome to a period of meditation from 9 to 9:45 am. We begin this period with a Vedic (ancient Indian) fire ceremony with Sanskrit chants. This is followed by an opportunity for individual prayer and meditation. You may offer that prayer at the altar and receive a blessing from one of the ministers. After service, you are invited to meet the ministers and congregation over refreshments. “ “During the service, I experienced a wonderful peace and stillness, such as I have only read about, and until then, felt was only attainable by the great saints. It was a tangible experience of God’s presence in my life. You have taught me how to find God within, and have been truly divine friends along the way. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.” ” — J.N. Mountain View Watch one of our recent Sunday service here. Or browse through the whole playlist of services on YouTube. Truths shared by the great religions Paramhansa Yogananda (left) and his disciple, Swami Kriyananda • Our spiritual lineage Sunday services include comparative readings and talks from the Bible and the Bhagavad Gita (one of India’s most beloved scriptures). “ “Here, I am finding answers to questions I have asked for decades. Thank you for shining your love like a lighthouse, guiding me home.” ” — D. B. Meaningful connections with others One of the most frequent comments by visitors is, “I feel so much joy here!” The smiles you’ll meet are genuine. Ananda is a place of music, laughter, deep spiritual fellowship, and a refreshing sense of humor. “ I felt at home the moment I heard the music. So much joy. I felt tears of gratitude to have found what I was seeking after a lifetime of searching. ” — Karen K, Mountain View All are welcome Ananda’s primary goal is to help people achieve Self-realization. “ Self-realization is the eternal message of religion. Whatever your beliefs and practices, the essential purpose of religion is to help you to fulfill your own highest potential, as a child of God.” —Paramhansa Yogananda. Thousands have learned to meditate here over the past 50 years. Paramhansa Yogananda | Swami Kriyananda Ananda is also one of the largest centers in the world for the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda , author of the spiritual classic, Autobiography of a Yogi. Everything you see at Ananda exists because of Swami Kriyananda , a close, direct disciple of Yogananda. He devoted more than 60 years of his life to serving his guru. Ananda is Yogananda’s light, channeled through Swamiji — the music you hear, the many books he has written, the services, and the joyful energy that lies under it all. Our spiritual roots are India’s ancient science of Raja Yoga, a comprehensive way of life that includes techniques and attitudes for spiritual awakening. Our approach is non-sectarian. These teachings bring deeper understanding and helpful techniques to the spiritual life, whatever your faith may be. “ “Your religion is not the garb you wear outwardly, but the garment of light you weave around your heart. The thoughts and beliefs in which you enclose yourself are not you. Discover who you are behind those outer trappings, and you will discover who Jesus was, and Buddha, and Krishna. For the masters come to earth for the purpose of holding up to every man a reflection of his deeper, eternal Self.” —Paramhansa Yogananda ” The joys of the spiritual life THE INNER LIFE Each of us has a calm joyful center, deep within. It may get lost in the hectic pace of life, but it is there, waiting patiently for us. Meditation, introspection, and other yogic practices help us rediscover that joy—and a rich, inner life. Writes Yogananda, “Even great outward hardship cannot touch you, once you have learned to dwell always in the Self within.” MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS Connect with intelligent, remarkable people who are serious about the spiritual life: Silicon Valley professionals, teachers, creative artists, business people, families—people from every walk of life. The companionship of supportive, understanding friends is an immeasurable help along the way. DEVOTION Awakening the heart’s natural love is no easy task. Life’s accumulated hurts can easily close us off from true feeling, and from the world around us. But an open, loving heart is a vital part of spiritual awakening. Cultivate devotion with heart-opening practices like chanting, seva, and prayer for others. SEVA Seva (service or karma yoga) is one of the clearest paths to God. In helping others, we forget ourselves. We become progressively more aware of a greater energy flowing through us. Writes Swami Kriyananda, “People who gladly share with others feel themselves bathed by a constant, inner stream of happiness.” THE CREATIVE ARTS Creative flow states also help us experience a power greater than our own. Inspired art helps awaken us to greater realities. Swami Kriyananda himself received inspiration for 400 pieces of music and was a prolific author. Ananda celebrates creativity in every aspect of life, from work and cooking to all the traditional arts. Residents share a deep desire for God and a spirit of joyful friendship. Residents are naturally considerate of one another and cooperate together to minimize those influences which work against our spiritual practices. The community is a large garden apartment complex on 5 acres of natural surroundings with a large central courtyard. The two-story apartments were built in the 1960s and are lovingly maintained, with a mix of studios, large and small 1 bedrooms, and townhouses. What you’ll find here: A supportive environment for the spiritual life Friendly, like-minded people A safe, walkable residential neighborhood Community meditation temple Solar-heated swimming pool in summer A private patio or deck with every home A large organic garden and orchard “ “I’ve lived here for many years while working outside Ananda in a corporate setting. I can easily see what my life would have looked liked if I‘d never moved here. It would have been very easy to slip, bit by bit, away from my spiritual ideals. I have a deep sense of appreciation for the atmosphere of support, and for the deep friendships we share.” ” — Cheryl S. Pushing the edges of growth The spiritual journey is intensely personal; no one can walk it for you. Our victories and challenges are uniquely our own. At the same time, the work of breaking down the ego and opening to the power of the Divine is the greatest challenge we will ever face. If we are honest with ourselves, we often flinch from the effort. This is why monasteries and ashrams have been home to seekers for millennia. This is a new form of these ancient models. It is easier to make progress spiritually when in the company of other seekers. And the rough edges of ego that need smoothing come to the surface in community life, that otherwise lie hidden when the soul is working alone. “ “The first time I visited the community, during an Open House, I heard a little voice say, ‘I could live here!’ A year later I did. I’ve been a part of Ananda for years now, and not only have I never regretted becoming part of Ananda, but I love it more each passing day. I love knowing all my neighbors. I love having soul friends who live thirty seconds away. I love dinners together with friends. I love interacting on a daily basis with others who share my commitment to finding God. I love experiencing and witnessing so much joyful service. And most of all I love feeling nestled in the loving, joyous, peaceful presence of the Masters, right where I live.” ” — Sharon B. “ “It’s the day-to-day blessings that keep me energized and grateful, whether it’s working with fellow devotees), hearing one of Asha’s sermons, or living in a community setting which proves to me again and again that ‘environment is stronger than will.’” ” — Bob. L. Why live in spiritual community? “One of the fundamental needs of our age is for putting down roots again. We have extended ourselves too far outward, away from the Self within, and away from the natural rhythms of the planet on which we live. Even in our outward, human associations we have lost touch with reality. The average person in America today moves fourteen times in his life—not to new homes in the same community, but to different communities altogether. Loneliness has become chronic. Friendships tend to be of the cocktail party and patio barbecue variety, and not the deep bonds that people form as a result of trials and victories shared. We know people to smile at, but not to weep with, not to confide in, not to go to for help in times of physical, emotional, or spiritual distress. Small, spiritual communities offer a viable alternative to the depersonalizing influences of our times. People living and working together, sharing with one another on many levels of their lives, suffering, growing, learning, rejoicing, winning victories together, they develop a depth in their outward relationships as well that helps them, inwardly, to acquire spiritual understanding. Cooperative spiritual communities provide a vital solution to one of the most pressing needs of our times—an opportunity for those who want to develop spiritually to do so in a supportive environment, and a dynamic example to the rest of the world that spiritual principles really work.” From Swami Kriyananda’s The Path Establishing householder communities was one Yogananda’s most cherished dreams. “ “To spread a spirit of world brotherhood among all peoples, and to aid in the establishment in many countries, of self-sustaining world-brotherhood colonies for plain living and high thinking.” ” — Paramhansa Yogananda, Aims and Ideals Swami Kriyananda was deeply inspired by his guru’s vision. He founded the first spiritual community in 1968 in northern California. Hundreds of people live at Ananda Village today. Since then, more communities have been established and are home to 1,000 people worldwide. Communities include: Mountain View, Sacramento, Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles, Assisi (Italy), and several communities in India. I love to listen to her Sunday services and I’m now listening over and over again the new audio classes online. God bless you.” —Gregor L., computer science professor, Slovenia “I listen to these classes virtually everyday while commuting to work. They are beyond just interest — they are a constant reminder of where I want my consciousness to be.” —Otavio Pascarelli, Brazil “Here is a donation and thank you for your fine internet ministry — a blessing to all.” —K. Sherman, research scientist, Seattle, WA “I love the Letters From Asha. I am amazed at some of the down-to-earth questions, and at how great you are at bringing those issues into a spiritual context. You so easily move people to the real heart of things.” —W. Ollson, physicist (retired), Fremont, CA “I don’t think the topic of the webinar matters. Whenever Asha speaks, she speaks directly to something going on in my life, or a piece of information I thought I already ‘knew’, clicks on a deeper level. I am healthier in my spiritual perspective. Thank you so much!” —D. Barrett “Thank you! I feel so blessed to be able to receive your teachings, and simple, yet profound understanding of so many spiritual concepts. Tremendously helpful & inspiring.” —P.
