Under the guidance of First African Methodist Episcopal leaders and Angel City Links Achievers Inc. mentors he found that when he did not believe in himself, others did! Without mentorship, Jamico would have fallen into the violence that continues to plague South Los Angeles. He excelled academically, graduating Summa cum laude earning degrees from Tuskegee University and Harvard University. During his stay at Harvard Jamico launched his life-long campaign of educating youth in Bedford Stuyvesant and Roxbury. He returned to Watts and became a teacher at Markham Middle School and Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall. He has for the past two decades developed after-school and mentoring programs for young people from infancy to college. As Jamico would say, “from the cradle to the calculus.” He went on to bring a STEM education program to students across LAUSD. Due to his efforts, partnering schools have seen dramatic increases in students’ math and science scores.  In 2016, he became the Executive Director of Avalon Carver Community Center. Under his leadership, the organization has doubled its size and expanded programs to include an on-site YouthBuild High School, 150-bed transitional age youth shelter,  prevention and education programs reaching vulnerable youth across Los Angeles County. He is currently working with Microsoft and a host of local nonprofits to ensure that inner city youth have access to literacy, coding, and STEM inspired learning opportunities. Jamico is committed to ensuring that youth growing up in South Los Angeles have the same opportunities he did. Albert Brady Director of Services Albert became the Director of Services in 2016. He received his MaSC from Columbia University in Applied Physiology with a specialization in Kinesiology; also studying Post-Baccalaureate and Biotechnology at Harvard University; and earning his BA in Kinesiology/ Sports Medicine and Studies from Morehouse College. We believe that our children are our greatest asset, and helping them realize their gifts, talents, and potential is central to our mission. PEP is an education-focused program that empowers young people in elementary and middle school with the skills to make positive decisions around substance use. Our program uses two innovative and evidence-based curriculums, Winners Sanokfa and Botvin Life Skills, to provide comprehensive lessons and discussions on various topics like self-esteem development, cultural awareness, decision-making skills, validation, values clarification, and leadership. Our ultimate goal is to help young people make positive decisions around engaging in any type of substance, including marijuana, alcohol, and prescription drugs, throughout the year. We aim to make our program easily accessible for our participants by hosting it on several school sites around South Los Angeles. Along with classroom sessions, we also offer a range of services, including parent workshops, community gatherings, and afterschool services Monday through Thursday. Our comprehensive approach helps young people understand the role of validation, the importance of values clarification, and the significance of leadership in making healthy decisions. 4920 S Avalon Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90011 Phone: (323) 232-4391     [email protected] Services — Avalon Carver 0 Skip to Content Home About Us Our Mission Our Team Our Partners Programs Overview Youth Build: Mary B. Firstly, it aims to reduce the number of repeat DUI offenses by providing a state-licensed program that educates participants on the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or other drugs. Secondly, it provides an opportunity for participants to address any issues related to their alcohol and/or drug use. This program is designed to help individuals overcome their struggles with substance abuse and prevent future DUI offenses. Our goal is to create a safer community by promoting responsible driving and addressing the root causes of DUI offenses. 4920 S Avalon Blvd Los Angeles, CA 90011 Phone: (323) 232-4391     [email protected] Nutrition — Avalon Carver 0 Skip to Content Home About Us Our Mission Our Team Our Partners Programs Overview Youth Build: Mary B. Through our STEM program, GED classes, learning centers and more, we hope to provide free resources to educate and strengthen. Community We have a long history of service to South Los Angeles, going back over 60 years. We take pride in being a trusted and respected member of the community and a part of its rich history of community leaders. Rehabilitation We have taken steps to support a vulnerable population through programs that strengthen educational opportunities, employment, housing options and personal and community relationships. We want to build on our existing services with new housing for those in need and better tools to educate. Program Showcase   Be the Healing by Dr. Joy DeGruy Avalon-Carver has partnered with Dr. Joy DeGruy—renowned researcher, psychologist, social worker, and author of “Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America’s Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing”—since 2015. Our partnership has included collaborations around education and teacher trainings, parent education workshops, and rites of passage facilitator trainings. DeGruy’s research has been pivotal in helping African American communities build protective factors that cultivate positive attitudes, values, and beliefs, strengthen social supports, and nurture mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional health needs. Her wisdom and understanding of the unique needs of African American communities is invaluable! We look forward to our continued collaborations as we build our capacity to liberate, unify, and heal our community together.
