The majority of our clients are under the age of 45. As a husband and father of two kids, I can relate to your concerns. As someone in my mid-40s, I have personally experienced many of the same dilemmas that many young families are going through. I am happy to share my experience and guide you through the complex mix of personal, financial, and investment questions. Our young professional clients have unique needs and objectives that traditional financial advisors and wealth managers cannot address. As dedicated financial advisors for young families, we often swap our hats to become life coaches and career advisors. Early Career Many of our clients are at the beginning of their careers. When they decide to work with us, our clients usually have their first or second job after school. Starting a family Most of our clients have young children or plan to start a family. We often get asked – Should I go back to work or stay home with my baby? There is no formula or calculator that can give you the right answer. It all comes down to your personal priorities and aspirations. We will offer you solutions that fit your life choices. Most parents will do anything for their children. But having kids is expensive. Whether one parent will stay at home and not earn a salary, or you decide to hire a nanny or pay for daycare, children will add an extra burden to your budget. Not to mention the extra money for clothes, food, entertainment (Disneyland) and even another seat on the plane. Building the foundations It’s not a secret that most traditional financial advisors and wealth management firms prefer to work with clients who have already accumulated significant wealth. We are different. We understand that you are in the beginning of your financial journey and want to be your trusted partner through all life changes and transitions. Asset consolidation It’s normal for young families to consolidate their assets in order to manage their wealth more efficiently. Most young couples start their journey with multiple retirement, investment and savings accounts scattered in various financial institutions and former employers. Through our financial planning tools, we can help you get a more comprehensive and objective view of your finances. Setting your financial goals Setting specific goals is crucial to achieving success in life and finances. We can help you determine and prioritize your specific short-term and long-term financial goals. These milestones will guide you and help you make better financial decisions in the future. Budgeting Good budgeting is crucial to financial well-being. We can provide you with tools and resources to help you manage your income, cash flows, and spending. Manage your debt Many young families who are combining their assets often end up combining their debt as well. Managing and paying off your debt becomes a key priority in achieving financial independence. Own a house or rent Owning your first home is a common topic among my clients. However, home prices have risen in all major metropolitan areas around the country. Buying a home has become an impossible dream for many young families. Not surprisingly a recent survey by the Bank of the West has revealed that 46% of millennials have chosen to rent over buying a home, while another 11% are staying with their parents. Buying a home in today’s market conditions is a big commitment and a highly personal decision. It depends on a range of factors, including how long you plan to live in the new home, available cash for a downpayment, job prospects, willingness to maintain your property, size of your family, and so on. Saving for retirement Maximizing your retirement savings will help you grow your wealth and build a cushion of solid retirement savings. Not to mention the fact that 401k contributions are tax-deferred and lower your current tax bill. Saving for college with a 529 Plan Many parents want to help their children pay for college or at least cover some of the expenses. 529 plan is a convenient, relatively inexpensive, and tax-advantageous way to save for qualified college expenses. Most states have their own state-run 529 plan. Some states even offer state tax deductions for 529 contributions. Most 529 plans have various active, passive, and age-based investment options. You can link your checking account to your 529 plan and set-up regular monthly contributions. There are plentiful resources about 529 plans in your state. We are happy to answer questions. Protect your legacy Many young families want to protect their children in case of unexpected events or a medical emergency. The process of protecting your legacy is called estate planning. Like everything else, it’s highly personalized depending on the size of your family, the variety of assets you own, your income sources, your charitable aptitude, and so on. Talking to an experienced estate attorney can help you find the best decision for yourself and your family. Dynamic financial planning As a financial advisor for young families, we offer dynamic financial planning to help you build, grow, and preserve your wealth through life transitions. No matter what happens in your life right now, we know that a few years from now things will be different. Life changes all the time – you get a new job, you have a baby, you need to buy a new car, or your company goes public, and your stock options make you a millionaire. Whatever the future brings, we want to plan it together. Contact Us Please enable JavaScript in your browser to complete this form. Please enable JavaScript in your browser to complete this form. We provide comprehensive wealth management, financial planning and investment advisory solutions to doctors and their families. We want to be your trusted partner through your career and life changes. Why doctors have unique financial needs? Doctors have distinctive financial needs based on the high standards for their education and specific requirements of their career. Furthermore, personal and family circumstances can contribute to the additional complexities of their financial life. Doctors start their career late Doctors begin their career and start earning an income much later than the average professional in the US. Between college, medical school, residency, and fellowship, most physicians get their first full-time job in their mid-30s Doctors may start a family later in their life Due to the strict educational requirements and their late entry to the workforce, doctors tend to start a family much later in life. The families of doctors must make certain family decisions such as having children, buying a first home, providing childcare, and saving for college further along in life compared to other families. Doctors often have massive student loans The medical degree becomes more competitive every year as the tuition cost keeps rising at steeper pace, Seventy-five percent of medical students graduated in their class of 2018 with student debt. The average loan per student was $196,520. Additionally, nearly 50% of doctors graduate with more than $200,000 in debt. It’s not uncommon for some physician couples to owe over half a million dollars in student loans. Doctors earn above the average taxable income Doctors are amongst the highest-earning professions in the US. The average primary care physician earns $237,000. The specialists make an average of $341,000. General dentists earn an average of $175,840 a year, while Orthodontists make an average of $225,760 a year. These figures are average for the county and could vary significantly from one region to the next and one subspecialty to another. In all cases, high earning physicians and dentists will get pushed to higher tax brackets. Doctors have significant malpractice risk Physicians and dentists face enormous malpractice risks from disgruntled patients. Many employers offer protection. However, most private practice doctors and dentists will need to pay out of pocket for malpractice insurance. How we help doctors improve your financial life? Take advantage of your employee benefits Some healthcare systems offer generous employee benefits in order to attract and retain top talent. Many of our clients work for Kaiser Permanente, which provides a range of healthcare, retirement and insurance benefits corresponding to the number of years that doctors work for Kaiser. Knowing and taking full advantage of your benefits will help through your journey to financial freedom. Save for retirement Even if your employer offers a pension, frequently, you need to commit to working for them for several years to take advantage of the full benefit. If you decide to go on a different path, you need to save aggressively for retirement to make up for your late entry in the workforce as well as to have enough savings to supplement your income during retirement. We can tell you how much you need to save for retirement to live comfortably without enduring personal and financial sacrifices. Pay off your student debt Paying off your student loans should be one of your highest priorities in the start and midst of your career. For those looking of you looking to reduce their debt, we can discuss several options: Loan repayment options from employers . Many private, federal, state, and city health care organizations offer loan repayment options as an incentive to retain their doctors. Those options are frequently dependent on years of service and commitment to work for a certain number of years. These programs vary from employer to employer. Loan forgiveness . Under the Public service loan forgiveness program (PSLF) launched in 2007, full-time employees at federal, state, or local government agencies, as well as nonprofit workers at an organization with a 501(c)(3) designation, are eligible for loan forgiveness after paying 120 monthly payments. The first applicants will be able to benefit from this program in 2017. Working in underserved areas . Some states offer loans forgiveness for doctors working in underserved areas. The conditions and benefits vary state by state but, works similar to the PLSF program. Loan consolidation and refinancing . If you have two or more private student loans, you may want to consider loan consolidation. If you pay high interest on your current loans, think about refinancing it at a lower rate. Your new loan availability depends on your credit history, income, and general macroeconomic Income-Driven -Repayment – Income-Driven Repayment (IBR) limits the physicians’ loan payments at a percentage of their household income. Your monthly payment will be adjusted annually based on your household earnings and family size. The repayment terms are for up to 25 years. After that period, any outstanding debt will be forgiven. At that point, any residual amount will become taxable. Financial Advisor for Physicians Manage your cash flows We can help our physician clients in their early career with the intricate process of budgeting and managing cash flows. After years of study and residents, doctors confront the challenges of balancing between diverging personal and financial goals. We are here to provide objective and independent advice on how to best manage your personal finances in a way that makes sense to you. Mind your taxes High earning doctors should consider managing their taxes as one of their top priorities. Tax implication can vary depending on your income level, family size, employment status, and investments among others. Having a trusted tax expert on your side will help you make well-informed decisions that could optimize your taxes throughout your career. Mitigate risk As a physician, you must consider an extensive list of threats to your career and the ability to earn income. Some of this risk include your health, disability, loss of life, unemployment, personal umbrella, and malpractice. We will evaluate the different levels of risk you are facing, will offer solutions that will help you mitigate these risks and bring peace of mind to yourself and your family. Estate Planning We can guide you through the essential steps of protecting your legacy with estate planning. Estate planning will allow you to safeguard your family and loved ones in the case of unforeseen events and medical emergencies. In our state of California, if you pass away, unless you have established trust, all your assets will go to probate and will be distributed by the court. The probate is a public, lengthy and expensive process that might take a significant toll on your family. We offer comprehensive financial planning and fiduciary investment advice to successful entrepreneurs and their families. As a business owner, I understand the unique challenges and intricacies of running a business. We want to be your trusted partner through your business success and life transitions. Why do business owners have unique financial needs? Small and mid-size business owners are the backbone of the US economy. They spend years building up their companies and ventures. Business owners have a unique foresight that drives their pursuit of success. They invest a significant amount of personal capital and money in their companies. Those who succeed can go public or pass their wealth to the next generation. While focused on growing their business, entrepreneurs often ignore their personal financial planning needs and delay their retirement savings. For many entrepreneurs, the value of their business becomes their most significant asset and the only source of retirement income. Integrate your business and personal goals. We want to be part of your success story. The most crucial step in our personal financial planning process is helping you set your personal and business goals in a way that makes sense to you. Our priority is to ensure that your business interests do not interfere with personal financial goals. Together, we want to find the right balance between your business and personal well-being. Retirement Planning A financial advisor For business owners, we know that robust retirement planning is a cornerstone to achieving your success. For some business owners, selling their business is their only retirement option. As your trusted partner, we want to give you more options. We see your retirement savings as an essential buffer from the locked-in value of your business. By growing your retirement savings, you will have a diversified and independent source of future income. 401k plan For business owners with multiple employees, the 401k plan is an excellent way to save for retirement. A 401k defined contribution plan can boost your employee’s loyalty, increase retention rate, and lower your taxes. As a 401k plan sponsor, you can design a retirement plan that meets your business and personal goals at the same time. As fiduciary advisors, we can help you navigate smoothly through the complex regulatory, fiduciary, and tax rules of opening and maintaining an employer 401k plan. We partner with Vanguard Retirement Services to provide you with a cost-effective 401k plan tailored to your specific business needs. Our 401k plans offer the full range of Vanguard low-cost index funds and ETFs. Solo 401k plan Solo 401 k plan is an ideal retirement saving option for solo entrepreneurs, self-employed proprietors, and business owners employing seasonal and temp workers. Solo entrepreneurs can save aggressively for your retirement through your solo 401k plan. The single-member plan allows you to contribute s both an employer and an employee. The solo 401k plan has many of the advantages of the traditional 401k plan but with a lot more flexibility and less regulatory scrutiny. Defined Benefit Plan A defined benefit plan can be an appealing option to save for retirement for many high earning business owners at higher tax brackets. Defined Benefit Plans work best for business owners who are at least 35 years old and want to make retirement contributions beyond the current limits of their 401k plan or SEP IRA. Tax planning Strategic tax planning is essential for high earning business owners. Partnering with a trusted tax expert will help you make well-informed decisions that can optimize and reduce your personal and business taxes in the long run. Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 made significant changes in the tax law allowing qualified pass-through business owners to deduct up to 20% of their net business income from their income taxes. Eligible businesses can effectively reduce their income tax rate by nearly 20%. Estate planning Estate planning is the process of arranging the disposal of your assets in case of unforeseen life events. It further involves your family members, corporate partners, and employees. Estate planning starts with setting up a family trust and personal will and will also affect financial, tax, medical and business planning. Additionally, you can use estate planning to eliminate uncertainties over the administration of a probate and to maximize the value of the estate by reducing taxes and other expenses. The goal of estate planning can be determined by your specific goals and may be as simple or complex as your needs dictate. Secure financing Every new business idea requires capital to start. The success of your idea may depend on your ability to secure funding. Sometimes, the funding comes from your personal savings. Other times, you will need to seek external financing within your social circle or a financial institution. You can even offer an equity stake in your business in exchange for financing. As your partner, we can help you minimize the overall cost of capital by exploring multiple financing channels. Plan for business succession The complexity of your succession plan will depend on the size, industry, and legal status of your business. A successful business venture will have a high impact on multiple corporate stakeholders at the same time. Key stakeholders are all business owners, employees, contractors, vendors, clients, landlords, and suppliers. Creating a business succession plan will ensure that all parties’ interests are met in the event you decide to discontinue your business or pass it to another person. Moreover, a robust plan will address numerous tax and financial issues that will result from the succession. Exit planning Whether you are ready to move to your next venture or simply want to spend more time with your family and loved ones, exit planning will play a key role in your business and personal success. Our firm is a fiduciary financial advisor for busy professionals in the San Francisco Bay Area and nationally. We are committed to bringing simplicity to your complex investment decisions. Our mission is to provide you with unbiased and trustworthy financial advice to help you make well-informed decisions considering your financial goals, risk management, and tax implications. Why we are different? Babylon Wealth Management is a fiduciary financial advisor committed to providing personalized, tax-efficient asset management services that are in your best interest only. With a diverse background in accounting and investing, we can help you manage your investment and retirement portfolio and maximize your financial outcome. Your asset management goals are unique. As a financial advisor to busy professionals, we understand that everyone’s individual circumstances are unique. We will build your investment portfolio tailored to your individual needs and objectives. Personalized Focus Our investment strategy is tailored to your financial goals, milestones, and risk tolerance level. Leave the hard work to us and spend time on what matters most to you. Tax Efficiency Having an investing and accounting background gives us the unique ability to help you navigate through complex financial decisions, minimize your tax burden, and maximize your earnings potential. Diversification We believe in portfolio diversification as a way to reduce your investment risk and offer broad exposure to multiple industries and sectors. Passive Indexing Passive investing is a long-term wealth-building strategy that involves buying and holding securities that mirror the stock market. We can achieve this by buying low-cost index funds or building baskets of securities that reflect the performance of the S&P 500 and other indices. Active Beta For clients with more complex needs, we offer active beta investing, which allows us to make tactical and strategic moves toward companies and sectors with strong secular growth. Our Asset Management Strategy Unlock the value of your investment portfolio Quality momentum – Momentum investing scans for stocks with strong recent performance while assessing quality factors such as company fundamentals, management, price upside, and technical levels. Value – Value Investing looks for underappreciated and undervalued stocks that trade below their fundamental value. Value companies generally report below-market average price-to-earnings and free cash flow metrics while maintaining strong profitability and return on capital. Dividend – Dividend Investing selects stocks with an outstanding dividend-paying track record, strong balance sheet, and profitability. Low volatility – We love companies that do well in all economic cycles and market conditions. These stocks typically experience below-average price fluctuations. Growth at a reasonable price – Growth investing at a reasonable price looks for growth companies with consistent revenue and earnings growth while maintaining strong fundamentals and competitive profitability and cash flow metrics. Insider activity — One of our long-time favorite strategies is tracking insider activity. Corporate insiders sell their company stocks for various reasons, including liquidity, taxes, and diversification. They only buy for one reason— to make money because they believe their company is undervalued. Time in the market vs. Timing the market When it comes to investing, the question of “time in the market” versus “timing the market” is crucial. At Babylon Wealth Management, we emphasize the importance of staying invested for the long term rather than trying to predict short-term market movements. “Time in the market” allows investors to benefit from compound growth and ride out market volatility. Historically, the market has trended upward over time, and being consistently invested ensures you capture those key periods of growth that can have a significant impact on your portfolio. In contrast, “timing the market” involves attempting to buy low and sell high, which is extremely difficult to do consistently. Even experienced investors can struggle with this approach, often missing out on market rallies or selling during downturns. While timing the market may seem appealing, the risk of mistiming can lead to missed opportunities or unnecessary losses. Research consistently shows that long-term investors who stay the course tend to achieve better results than those who attempt to time the market. At Babylon Wealth Management, our approach is rooted in helping clients build wealth through disciplined, long-term strategies that focus on growth, stability, and peace of mind rather than chasing short-term gains. This carries implications for career choice, practice setting, burnout risk, specialty selection, and access to care in underserved communities. In this context, federal loan programs such as Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) and income-driven repayment (IDR) plans have been critical tools for managing debt burdens and encouraging service in public and nonprofit sectors. Recent federal changes introduce significant shifts in both forgiveness and repayment structures, with particular relevance to physicians. Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF): Policy Evolution and 2026 Rule Changes A. Background on PSLF PSLF Basics: Originally authorized in 2007, PSLF allows borrowers who work full-time for qualifying public service employers (government or 501(c)(3) nonprofit) and make 120 qualifying payments to have remaining federal student loan debt forgiven after at least 10 years. B. Regulatory Final Rule (Effective July 1, 2026) Employer Eligibility Redefined: A final rule from the U.S. Department of Education, effective July 1, 2026 , revises the definition of a qualifying employer , explicitly allowing disqualification of employers that engage in activities deemed to have a “substantial illegal purpose.” This is intended to restrict PSLF to traditional public service roles. Less than 10 employers are anticipated to be disqualified, but the rule tightens oversight. The “California/Texas Fix”: Fortunately, the “Contractor Rule” persists, allowing physicians in states like CA and TX (where state law prohibits hospitals from directly employing physicians) to qualify for PSLF even if they are technically employed by a private group, provided they work at a qualifying nonprofit facility. C. Proposed Changes to Residency Credit Residency Exclusion: Under the new 2026 rules, residency and fellowship years no longer count toward PSLF credit. This is a massive shift, as it effectively delays the start of a physician’s 10-year countdown until they become a full-time attending. These proposals have drawn opposition from physician organizations, citing workforce impacts and access to care. D. Practical Implications for Physicians Planning Strategies: Physicians pursuing PSLF may need to closely monitor employer status, ensure continuous qualifying employment, and carefully document payments. Changes to residency credit emphasize the importance of when loans were taken and employment decisions early in a career. Overhaul of Income-Driven Repayment (IDR) and Introduction of RAP A. Discontinuation of Existing Plans The federal BUILD/“One Big Beautiful Bill” legislation has initiated an overhaul of IDR plans: Existing Plans Phased Out: Employment options, including SAVE (“Saving on a Valuable Education”), PAYE, and some versions of ICR/IBR, will be sunset by July 2028 . Borrowers will be transitioned to the new system. Interest Accrual Resumes: Interest previously subsidized under SAVE will resume accrual as of August 2025, increasing total repayment costs for many borrowers who had been benefiting from interest waivers. The Interest Impact: The 100% subsidy on unpaid interest—a major perk for residents whose low salaries didn’t cover accruing interest—is largely gone, though the new RAP plan offers a different, less robust interest benefit. B. New Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP) – Launching July 1, 2026 Single New IDR Plan: RAP is structured to replace multiple legacy IDR plans, with payments based on adjusted gross income (AGI) tiers – ranging from 1% to 10% above certain income thresholds. 30-Year Repayment Term: Unlike some older plans, forgiveness under RAP may require up to 30 years of qualifying payments . This extends the time to eventual forgiveness for many borrowers. Payment Minimum: Even borrowers with very low income will have a minimum payment requirement (e.g., $10 per month), eliminating the possibility of zero payments under some older plans. Borrowing Caps Affect Repayment: New federal loan limits (e.g., professional degree annual prescriptive amounts) may push future borrowers toward private loans, which do not qualify for IDR or PSLF. C. Impact on Physician Borrowers Strategic Decisions: Physicians currently on legacy plans should carefully evaluate whether to remain on existing plans until they sunset or transition early to RAP or other options. Effect on Total Cost: Extended repayment terms under RAP and resumed interest accrual could increase total interest paid over the life of the loan compared with previous IDR plans. Broader Policy and Workforce Considerations A. New Borrowing Limits and the End of Grad PLUS For current and future medical students, the way medical schools are financed has fundamentally changed. Grad PLUS Elimination: As of July 1, 2026 , the Grad PLUS loan program is phased out for new borrowers. Capped Funding: Direct Unsubsidized loans for professional programs ( such as MD/DO) are now capped at $50,000 per year, with a $200,000 lifetime limit . The “Funding Gap”: Since the average cost of medical school often exceeds $250,000, many students will now be forced to turn to private student loans to cover the difference, which lack PSLF eligibility and federal death/disability discharges. B. Practical Advice for Physician Debt Management Key Actions for Physicians: Consult with a qualified student loan advisor or financial advisor to map out repayment timelines under current and future rules. Track qualifying payments and employer certifications diligently for PSLF. Evaluate the financial impact of switching from legacy IDR plans to RAP as rules evolve (e.g., by mid-2026). Stay informed about legislative developments, especially related to residency credit and employer eligibility for PSLF. Key Actions for Residents : Phase 1: The Transition (Before July 1, 2026) Consolidate Strategically If you have older FFEL or Perkins loans, consider consolidating them into a Direct Consolidation Loan before July 1, 2026. Direct Loans are required for PSLF eligibility and for access to current and future federal income-driven repayment plans. Consolidation decisions should be made carefully, as they can affect repayment history and plan eligibility. Preserve Legacy IBR If Eligible Borrowers who qualify for legacy Income-Based Repayment (IBR) – particularly the 10% version with a payment cap—may benefit from remaining on that plan if permitted. Unlike the new Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP), IBR caps payments at the 10-year standard amount, which can be advantageous once attending income rises. Continued access to legacy plans, however, may be limited by future regulations. Phase 2: During Residency Enroll in an Income-Driven Plan Appropriate for Training Years During residency, maintaining enrollment in a federal income-driven repayment plan remains critical for cash-flow management. Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) covers all government workers who joined the ranks after January 1, 1987. Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) was established in 1920 and covers federal employees who started prior to 1987 and chose not to convert to FERS. Thrift Savings Plan The Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) is a retirement savings plan for all full-time federal employees. The purpose of the TSP is to provide you with a platform for long-term retirement savings where you can make regular monthly payroll contributions. In many aspects, TSP resembles the 401k plans used by private corporations. Nearly all employees of the United States Government are eligible to participate in the Thrift Savings Plan. You can qualify if you are: Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS) employee (started on or after January 1, 1984) Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) employee (began before January 1, 1984, and did not convert to FERS) Member of the uniformed services (active duty or Ready Reserve) Civilians in specific other categories of Government service, including some congressional positions and judges As a federal employee can contribute up to $23,000 in your Thrift Savings Plan in 2024. Additionally, all federal employees over the age of 50 can make a catch-up contribution of $7,500 per year. If you are a member of the uniformed services, receiving tax-exempt pay that is subject to the combat zone tax exclusion, you can make contributions up to the combined limit of $69,000 per year. Additionally, as a TSP participant, you will receive a matching contribution on the first 5% of your salary that you contribute each pay period. You will get a 1% government contribution even if you choose not to participate in the plan. The next 3% of your contributions will get a dollar-for-dollar match. The next 2% will be matched at 50 cents on the dollar. Contributions above 5% of your salary do not receive an additional match. Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) employees can contribute to TSP without receiving a government match. FERS Pension Annuity As a federal employee, you are entitled to a pension annuity based on your years of service, the “high-3” average salary, and your job type. The “high-3” average pay is your highest average base pay you earned during any 3 consecutive years of service. Your basic pay is the basic salary you earn for your position excluding payments for overtime and bonuses. The Basic FERS Annuity Formula: Age Formula Under Age 62 at Separation for Retirement, OR Age 62 or Older With Less Than 20 Years of Service 1 percent of your high-3 average salary for each year of service Age 62 or Older at Separation With 20 or More Years of Service 1.1 percent of your high-3 average salary for each year of service Certain government employees receive a pension annuity under the following provisions: Special Provision for Air Traffic Controllers, Firefighters, Law Enforcement Officers, Capitol Police, Supreme Court Police, or Nuclear Materials Couriers 1.7% of your high-3 average salary multiplied by your years of service which do not exceed 20, PLUS 1% of your high-3 average salary multiplied by your service exceeding 20 years Member of Congress or Congressional Employee (or any combination of the two) must have at least 5 years of service as a Member of Congress and/or Congressional Employee 1.7% of your high-3 average salary multiplied by your years of service as a Member of Congress or Congressional Employee which do not exceed 20, PLUS 1% of your high-3 average salary multiplied by your years of other service CSRS Pension Annuity The CSRS annuity is a defined benefit, contributory retirement plan. If you are a CSRS federal employee, you must share in the expense of your annuity pension. You can contribute 7%, 7.5%, or 8% of your pay to CSRS. Your federal agency will match your CSRS contribution. Furthermore, CSRS employees do not pay a Social Security tax and are not eligible for Social Security benefits. CSRS Annuity Formula Years of Service What You Receive First 5 years of service 1.5 percent of your high-3 average salary for each year Second 5 years of service Plus 1.75 percent of your high-3 average salary for each year For all years of service over 10 Plus 2 percent of your high-3 average salary for each year. Social Security All FERS employees receive social security benefits based on your annual income and years of service. Check the Social Security Administration website for your most up-to-date benefits. Most retirees will receive their social security paycheck at their full retirement age of 67. You can choose to delay collecting your social security benefits beyond your full retirement age, The amount of your retirement benefit will continue to increase up until age 70 by 8% annually if you are born after 1943. You can elect to receive your social security benefits as early as age 62. In this case, you will receive a reduced benefit. A Federal employee’s spouse is also eligible for Social Security benefits. He or she can receive 50% of the primary insurance amount. Insurance As a federal government employee, you are a member of the largest group life insurance program in the world, the Federal Employees’ Government Life Insurance (FEGLI). The Federal life insurance program covers over 4 million Federal employees and retirees, as well as many of their family members. Most federal employees are eligible for basic insurance coverage. You are responsible for the 2/3 of the total cost and the Government pays 1/3. Your age does not affect the cost of Basic insurance. Additionally, you can choose Option B, which allows you to increase your coverage by equal to one, two, three, four, or five times your annual basic pay. With Option C, you can add other family members to your insurance plan. Health Care Benefits Federal employees have the largest selection of healthcare plans covering you and your family. You can choose between Consumer-Driven and High Deductible plans, Fee-for-Service (FFS) plans without a Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO) option, or Health Maintenance Organ Financial Planning for Stock Options San Francisco Skip to content No results WHAT WE DO Wealth Management Asset Management Financial Planning Stock Options Planning Open a Solo 401k WHO WE HELP Professionals near retirement Tech Professionals Young Families Physicians Business Owners Federal Employees WHO WE ARE BLOG CONTACT US San Francisco Walnut Creek Get our newsletter First Name Last Name Email Address Phone Number Submit TALK WITH AN ADVISOR WHAT WE DO Wealth Management Asset Management Financial Planning Stock Options Planning Open a Solo 401k WHO WE HELP Professionals near retirement Tech Professionals Young Families Physicians Business Owners Federal Employees WHO WE ARE BLOG CONTACT US San Francisco Walnut Creek Search TALK WITH AN ADVISOR Menu Financial Planning For Stock Options Babylon Wealth Management provides comprehensive financial and tax planning for your stock options. Our firm is a fiduciary financial advisor for tech professionals in the San Francisco Bay Area and nationally. We are committed to bringing simplicity to your complex world of equity ownership, employee stock options, restricted stock units, deferred comp, and employee stock purchase plans. Our mission is to provide you with unbiased and trustworthy financial advice to help you make well-informed decisions considering your financial goals, risk management, and tax implications. Grow Your Wealth Know Your Options Manage Your Taxes Why we are different? Babylon Wealth Management is a fiduciary financial advisor committed to providing stock options financial planning advice that is in your best interest only. With a diverse background in accounting and finance, we can help you understand your stock options and maximize your financial outcome. Why financial planning for stock options is unique? As a financial advisor to tech professionals, we know that you have distinctive financial needs based on the unique characteristics of the tech and start-up industry. As most tech professionals, you receive a large portion of your earnings in the form of stock options or RSUs. The type of equity compensation can vary significantly from one company to another. Your stock options can drive a financial windfall and tax burden. Additionally, personal and family circumstances can contribute to the additional complexities of your financial life. What are Stock Options? Employee Stock Options (ESO) are a type of equity compensation. ESO is a contract between the employee and the employer, giving the employee the right but not the obligation to purchase company stocks at a pre-determined price in a set period. They are a favorite tool by employers to attract, reward, and retain top talent. Many tech professionals receive stock options alongside their regular earnings. Stock Options offer you the potential ownership of your company. It can be a great source of your future wealth. What are the main types of Stock Options and Equity Compensation? Incentive Stock Options Incentive Stock Options (ISO) are only granted to company employees. They can be vested for up to $100,000 of underlying stock value each year. ISO must expire after ten years. They are not transferrable. ISOs have preferential tax treatment. The tax rules for ISOs allow you to pay long-term capital gains if certain conditions are met. Long-term capital gain tax is payable on the difference between the sale price and the exercise price. To receive this tax benefit, the ISO holder must keep the stock for one year and one day after the exercise date and at least two years and one day from the grant date. If the sale date does not meet the above requirements, ISO is disqualified as such and treated as NSO. In that case, you will owe ordinary income tax and short/long-term capital gain taxes. Alternative Minimum Tax is applied on the difference between market price and exercise price in the year of exercise. You have to report the difference (also known as the bargain element) to IRS. This may have an impact on your final tax at the end of the year, depending on various other deductions. Non-Qualified Stock Options Non-qualified stock option s (NSOs) ) are a type of employee stock option that does not qualify for the favorable tax treatment of ISOs. NSOs are usually granted to company employees, but they can also be given to vendors, clients, and the board of directors. NSOs can be exercised at any time between their vesting date and expiration date. They offer more flexibility than Incentive Stock Options but have less favorable tax treatment. The IRS’s key requirement for NSO is that the exercise price can never be less than the fair market value of the stock as of the grant date. The owner of non-qualified stock options will pay income taxes on the difference between the stock market value and exercise price at the time of NSO exercise. If you decide to hold on to the stocks after the option exercise, you will owe long-term or short-term capital gains taxes, depending on your holding period. Restricted Stock Units (RSUs) Restricted stock units (RSU) are a type of equity compensation given by an employer to an employee in the form of company stock. Technically, RSUs are not stock options as they lack the optionality element when vesting. Often you may receive RSU alongside your stock options. Their tax treatment resembles NSOs and can impact the decision process of exercising your stock options. Employees receive RSUs through a vesting plan and distribution schedule after achieving certain performance milestones or remaining with their employer for a set period. RSUs give an employee interest in company stock, but they have no tangible value until the vesting is complete. The fair market value of your vested RSUs is treated as personal income in the year of vesting. Typically, companies withhold part of the shares for federal and state income taxes. The remaining shares are given to the employees. At this point, you can decide to keep all shares or sell them at your wish. If your employer doesn’t withhold taxes for your vested shares, you will be responsible for paying the corresponding taxes during the tax season. Boost your tax free savings. Stoyan Panayotov January 21, 2026 Retirement Planning The Roth IRA contribution limits for 2026 have increased from the previous year. For 2026, the limit is $7,500 per person, with an additional $1,100 catch-up contribution for those aged 50 or older. Roth IRA Income Limits for 2026 Your ability to contribute to a Roth IRA depends on your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) and your filing status: Filing Status Full Contribution (MAGI) Partial Contribution (Phase-out) Single / Head of Household Under $153,000 $153,000 – $167,999 Married Filing Jointly Under $242,000 $242,000 – $251,999 Married Filing Separately N/A $0 – $9,999 What is a Roth IRA? A Roth IRA is a tax-advantaged retirement savings account where you make after-tax contributions. This means you don’t get a tax break today, but your money grows tax-free, and your withdrawals in retirement are also tax-free. It is a powerful tool for those who expect to be in a higher tax bracket later in life. Roth vs. Traditional IRA Both accounts share the same annual contribution limits ($7,500 for 2026), but their tax treatment differs: Roth IRA: Contributions are made with after-tax dollars. Growth and withdrawals are tax-free. Traditional IRA: Contributions may be tax-deductible depending on your income. Growth is tax-deferred, but you will owe income taxes on withdrawals. Roth IRA Advantages Flexibility: There is no age limit for contributions. As long as you have earned income, you can contribute. No Investment Restrictions: You can invest in almost any asset class, including stocks, bonds, and ETFs. Tax-Free Growth: You won’t owe taxes on dividends or capital gains within the account. Withdraw Contributions Anytime: You can withdraw your original contributions (the principal) at any time, for any reason, without taxes or penalties. No Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs): Unlike Traditional IRAs and 401(k)s, you are not forced to take money out at a certain age. Legacy Planning: If you leave your Roth IRA to heirs, they generally receive the distributions tax-free. The “Earnings Cap” Rule You cannot contribute more than you earned for the year. For example, if you only earned $5,000 in 2026, your maximum contribution is limited to $5,000, even if the legal limit is higher. Mastering Roth Strategies At Babylon Wealth Management , we specialize in helping clients maximize the long-term benefits of Roth IRAs through a lens of “Tax Alpha”—the extra return achieved by proactive tax planning. As a fiduciary firm , we provide more than just account setup; we offer sophisticated tax-smart asset location , ensuring that your most growth-oriented, high-tax investments are placed within your Roth IRA to capitalize on tax-free compounding. For high-income earners who exceed direct contribution limits, we navigate the complexities of Backdoor and Mega Backdoor Roth strategies, and we provide detailed multi-year modeling for Roth conversions . Our goal is to help you build “tax diversification” by balancing taxable, tax-deferred, and tax-free accounts, giving you total control over your tax bracket and a powerful, tax-free legacy to pass on to your heirs. Our mission is to provide you with unbiased and trustworthy financial advice to help you make well-informed decisions considering your financial goals, risk management, and tax implications. Grow Your Wealth Lower Your Risk Manage Your Taxes Why we are different? “I grew up in an environment which appreciated strong technical and math skills. Therefore, I chose a career in Finance and spent more than fifteen years on Wall Street, managing stock options and derivatives. This experience is instrumental when working with tech professionals and helping you solve complex financial and tax situations.” Why tech professionals have unique financial needs? As a financial advisor to tech professionals, I know that you have distinctive financial needs based on the unique characteristics of the tech and start-up industry. As most tech professionals, you receive a large portion of your earnings in the form of equity compensation. The type of equity compensation can vary significantly from one company to another. Your equity compensation can drive a financial windfall and tax burden. Additionally, personal and family circumstances can contribute to the additional complexities of your financial life. What is Equity compensation? Many tech professionals receive equity compensation, supplementing your regular earnings. Equity compensation gives you ownership of your company. It can be a great source of your future wealth. What are the main types of Equity compensation? Employee Stock Options Employee Stock Options (ESO) are a favorite tool by employers to attract, reward, and retain top talent. ESO is a contract between the employee and the employer, giving the employee the right but not the obligation to purchase company stocks at a pre-determined price in a set period. Like exchange-traded call options, ESOs allow their owners to benefit from the rise of the company stock. However, there are significant differences. There is no public market for ESO. They can be extended for up to 10 years, while most exchange-traded options expire within a year or two. Furthermore, the employer can sometimes change the ESO’s strike price while this is not possible for exchange-traded options. Non-Qualifies Stock Options Non-qualified stock options are usually granted to company employees, but they can also be given to vendors, clients, and the board of directors. They can be exercised at any time between their vesting date and expiration date. They offer more flexibility than Incentive Stock Options but have less favorable tax treatment. The IRS’s key requirement for NSO is that the exercise price can never be less than the fair market value of the stock as of the grant date. The receiver of non-qualified stock options will pay income taxes on the difference between the stock market value and exercise price at the time of NSO exercise. If you decide to hold on to the stocks after the option exercise, you will owe long-term or short-term capital gains taxes depending on your holding period. Restricted Stock Restricted stock awards are a type of equity compensation where the employer rewards corporate insiders, executives, and employees based on performance milestones. Unlike RSUs, restricted stock awards come with voting rights immediately because the employee owns the stock the moment the award is granted. The value of restricted shares becomes taxable when they are fully vested. Employees who choose to keep the shares and sell them later in time will realize either short- or long-term gains or losses and pay taxes accordingly. Employee Stock Purchase plan (ESPP) Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP) is a popular tool for public companies to allow their employees to participate in the company’s growth and success by becoming shareholders. ESPP gives you the option to buy shares of your employer at a discount price. Most companies set a discount between 10% and 15%. Unlike RSUs and restricted stocks, the shares you purchase through an ESPP are not subject to any vesting schedule restrictions. That means you own the shares immediately after the purchase. All contributions to ESPP are pretax and subject to federal, state, and local taxes. Purchasing your company stock will not create a tax event. You don’t owe any taxes if you never sell your shares. Once you decide to sell your company stock, the discount will be treated as ordinary income. Additionally, the difference between the selling price and the purchase price is considered a realized capital gain. Restricted Stock Units (RSUs) A restricted stock unit (RSU) is a type of equity compensation given by an employer to an employee in the form of company stock. Employees receive RSUs through a vesting plan and distribution schedule after achieving certain performance milestones or upon remaining with their employer for a set period. Deferred Comp Non quailed deferred compensation (NQDC) plans are popular rewards and incentive tools for corporate executives and insiders. NQDC plans allow corporate participants to save and defer current income today and withdraw it at a future date. For many tech executives, deferred comp plans can be Insights | Articles & Blogs by Babylon Wealth Management Skip to content No results WHAT WE DO Wealth Management Asset Management Financial Planning Stock Options Planning Open a Solo 401k WHO WE HELP Professionals near retirement Tech Professionals Young Families Physicians Business Owners Federal Employees WHO WE ARE BLOG CONTACT US San Francisco Walnut Creek Get our newsletter First Name Last Name Email Address Phone Number Submit TALK WITH AN ADVISOR WHAT WE DO Wealth Management Asset Management Financial Planning Stock Options Planning Open a Solo 401k WHO WE HELP Professionals near retirement Tech Professionals Young Families Physicians Business Owners Federal Employees WHO WE ARE BLOG CONTACT US San Francisco Walnut Creek Search TALK WITH AN ADVISOR Menu Market Insights What Successful Investors Do During Market Stress Read More Mar 25, 2026 0 Personal Finance A Physician’s Guide to Student Loans in 2026 and beyond Read More Jan 22, 2026 0 Retirement Planning Roth IRA Contribution Limits for 2026. At Babylon Wealth, we believe that successful investing isn’t about predicting the next geopolitical event; it’s about how you behave once that event occurs. When geopolitical shocks hit, whether it’s the current Iran conflict or past crises like 9/11 or the Gulf War, markets react swiftly. Headlines turn alarming, volatility spikes, and investor behavior often shifts from rational to reactive. But history tells a different story than emotions. When markets react to the fog of war, the most successful investors don’t reach for the “sell” button; they reach for their financial plan. Successful investors don’t just survive these periods ; they use them. The Current Moment: War in Iran and Market Behavior The ongoing conflict involving Iran has triggered sharp—but not unprecedented—market reactions. Since late February 2026, global equities have experienced volatility, with the S&P 500 falling roughly 5% at one point and oil prices surging above $100 per barrel amid supply disruptions. Markets have been “yo-yoing” on shifting expectations around escalation and ceasefire negotiations, reflecting uncertainty rather than structural collapse. Interestingly, investor behavior is already diverging: Retail investors are reducing individual stock exposure Capital is rotating into ETFs, commodities, and defensive assets Treasury yields are higher, and precious metals are down There is caution and fear What History Says About War and Markets Let’s ground this discussion in data. Geopolitical Event Date Initial Max Drawdown 1-Year Return After Pearl Harbor Dec 1941 -19.8% +4.3% Korean War Start June 1950 -12.9% +11.7% Cuban Missile Crisis Oct 1962 -6.6% +27.8% JFK Assassination Nov 1963 -2.8% +14.1% Yom Kippur War / Oil Embargo Oct 1973 -16.1% -43.2%* Iranian Revolution Jan 1979 -2.3% +32.0% Gulf War (Iraq Invades Kuwait) Aug 1990 -16.9% +20.1% 9/11 Attacks Sept 2001 -11.6% -18.4%* Iraq War Start Mar 2003 -14.7% +32.1% Russia–Ukraine War Feb 2022 -7.1% +4.3% Israel–Hamas War Oct 2023 -4.5% +36.0% Iran Conflict Early 2026 -5.3%** TBD Note: Data reflects S&P 500 price returns. Past performance is not indicative of future results . Key insight: The average decline across events is relatively modest, ~10% Markets typically bottom within weeks and recover within ~1–2 months The “V-Shape” Recovery: On average, across 20+ major post-WWII geopolitical shocks, the market has taken only 28 days to return to its pre-event levels. Energy vs. Everything Else: Conflicts that involve major oil producers (like the current Iran situation) typically see deeper initial drawdowns due to energy price spikes. However, unless these spikes lead to a prolonged global recession, the recovery is usually robust. The 12-Month Rule: Historically, the S&P 500 is higher 80% of the time one year after a major geopolitical shock, with a median return of +10% The exceptions—1973 and 2001—were not just geopolitical events. They coincided with deeper economic or energy crises , which is a crucial distinction. What Successful Investors Actually Do 1. They Separate Noise from Structural Risk Not every geopolitical event has the same impact on markets. While headlines can make every conflict feel catastrophic, history shows that many wars lead only to short-term volatility. What matters more is whether the event disrupts the real economy—especially energy markets. That’s why the current Iran conflict is being closely watched. A prolonged disruption to oil supply, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz, could turn a geopolitical shock into a broader economic issue. Successful investors tune out the noise and focus on what actually drives markets: oil prices, inflation, and interest rates. 2. They Stay Invested (Even When It Feels Wrong) Market downturns often trigger fear, and the instinct to sell can feel overwhelming. But acting on that impulse is one of the most common and costly mistakes investors make. Selling during periods of panic tends to lock in losses, while recoveries often happen quickly and unexpectedly. Missing just a few of those rebound days can significantly impact long-term returns. Investors who succeed understand that markets are resilient over time—and they avoid making emotional decisions in temporary downturns. 3. They Use Volatility as an Opportunity Volatility can feel uncomfortable, but it often creates opportunity. During market stress, assets are frequently sold indiscriminately, regardless of their underlying quality. This market action can lead to temporary mispricing, where strong companies trade at discounted valuations. For long-term investors, these moments can offer attractive entry points. That’s why many institutional investors deploy capital during downturns, rather than waiting for conditions to feel “safe” again. 4. They Rebalance Staying invested doesn’t mean doing nothing. Successful investors actively manage risk—but they do so with discipline, not panic. In today’s environment, that often means shifting toward diversification—reducing concentrated positions in individual stocks and increasing exposure to ETFs, commodities, or defensive sectors. This kind of rebalancing helps maintain alignment with long-term goals, without abandoning the market altogether. 5. They Focus on Time Horizon, Not Headlines Geopolitical crises can feel overwhelming in real time, but markets are forward-looking. They begin adjusting to future expectations almost immediately. Even during periods of conflict, economies adapt. Supply chains shift, energy markets rebalance, and policy responses evolve. Successful investors keep their focus on where things are going—not just where they are today. When Things Actually Go Wrong History shows that wars alone rarely cause prolonged bear markets. The real risk arises when conflict spills into the broader economy. Sustained inflation, major oil supply disruptions, and aggressive interest rate hikes are the factors that tend to drive deeper and longer-lasting downturns. That’s what made the 1973 oil crisis so severe—and why energy markets remain a key variable today. How We Help You Navigate the Storm The pattern is remarkably consistent: markets react sharply to shocks, sell off as uncertainty rises, stabilize over time, and eventually recover. The investors who succeed aren’t the ones who predict these events; they’re the ones who respond to them with discipline. In today’s environment, the playbook hasn’t changed: stay disciplined, stay diversified, and stay invested. Because if history is any guide, periods of uncertainty often create the foundation for future opportunity. At Babylon Wealth, our investment strategy is designed to account for these moments of stress. We use proprietary model portfolios tailored to your specific risk tolerance, ensuring that when th Open a Solo 401k with Babylon Wealth Management Skip to content No results WHAT WE DO Wealth Management Asset Management Financial Planning Stock Options Planning Open a Solo 401k WHO WE HELP Professionals near retirement Tech Professionals Young Families Physicians Business Owners Federal Employees WHO WE ARE BLOG CONTACT US San Francisco Walnut Creek Get our newsletter First Name Last Name Email Address Phone Number Submit TALK WITH AN ADVISOR WHAT WE DO Wealth Management Asset Management Financial Planning Stock Options Planning Open a Solo 401k WHO WE HELP Professionals near retirement Tech Professionals Young Families Physicians Business Owners Federal Employees WHO WE ARE BLOG CONTACT US San Francisco Walnut Creek Search TALK WITH AN ADVISOR Menu Opening a Solo 401k with Babylon Wealth Management enables self-employed individuals to maximize their retirement savings through a combination of high contribution limits and professional fiduciary guidance. As a fee-only fiduciary firm, Babylon Wealth Management specializes in helping solo entrepreneurs and small business owners navigate the complexities of plan setup, tax optimization, and investment management. What is a Solo 401k A Solo 401k —also known as an Individual 401(k) or Personal 401(k)—is a powerful retirement savings plan designed specifically for self-employed individuals and business owners with no full-time employees other than a spouse. It functions similarly to a traditional corporate 401(k) but offers unique advantages because you act as both the employer and the employee . How It Works: The “Double” Contribution The defining feature of a Solo 401(k) is your ability to contribute in two different capacities, allowing you to reach high savings limits even with a moderate income. As an Employee: You can defer up to 100% of your compensation, up to the annual limit. For 2026 , this limit is $24,500 . As the Employer: Your business can contribute a “profit-sharing” amount—typically up to 25% of your compensation (or roughly 20% of net self-employment income for sole proprietors). Combined Limit: For 2026, the total combined contribution cannot exceed $72,000 . Solo 401k Key Benefits Employee Contributions : You can make both employee and employer contributions in your Solo 401k pl an. Catch-Up Contributions: If you are age 50 or older, you can contribute an additional $8,000 (totaling $80,000). For those aged 60–63, a “super catch-up” allows for $11,250 in 2026. Roth Option: Unlike a SEP IRA, many Solo 401k plans allow for Roth contributions . You pay taxes upfront, but the growth and future withdrawals are tax-free. Loan Access: You can typically borrow up to 50% of your account balance (up to $50,000 ) for any reason, penalty-free, as long as it is repaid in accordance with the plan rules. Mega Backdoor Roth: With the right plan structure, you can make “after-tax” contributions (distinct from Roth) and immediately convert them to Roth, potentially maxing out the full $72,000 limit in tax-free space. Supercharge your savings: For self-employed business owners, a Solo 401(k) isn’t just a savings account. It’s a powerful engine for tax efficiency and wealth creation. Solo 401(k) + Mega Backdoor If you’re self-employed and looking to shield more of your income from Uncle Sam, it’s time to talk about the “Holy Grail” of retirement accounts. Setting up a Solo 401(k) with a Mega Backdoor option is a total game-changer for high-earning freelancers, consultants, and small business owners. While most people are capped at standard contribution limits, this strategy allows you to put away significantly more in post-tax dollars, which then grow tax-free forever. Why do this with Babylon Wealth Management? Custom Plan Documents: Not all Solo 401(k) providers support the “Mega Backdoor” (after-tax contributions and in-plan conversions). Babylon builds plans specifically designed for this. Flexibility: You aren’t limited to a handful of mutual funds. You have the flexibility to invest in a wide range of assets that align with your strategy. Expert Guidance: Navigating the “conversion” part of the backdoor can be tricky. Babylon handles the heavy lifting and compliance so you don’t trigger an accidental tax bill. Higher Limits: For 2026, the total contribution limit has increased to $72,000 . If you are 50+, that limit jumps to $80,000 (and up to $83,250 for those aged 60–63). The Mega Backdoor is how you actually hit those numbers. If you hire someone, you must generally convert the plan to a standard 401(k). IRS Filing: Once your plan assets exceed $250,000 , you are required to file a simple annual report with the IRS ( Form 5500-EZ ). Deadlines: To make employee deferrals for a tax year, the plan must generally be established by December 31. Determine Your Eligibility Before beginning the process, ensure your business meets the IRS requirements for a Solo 401k: Presence of Business Income: You must have earned income from self-employment (Sole Proprietorship, LLC, S-Corp, C-Corp, or 1099 contracting). No Full-Time Employees: The plan is designed exclusively for business owners and their spouses. You cannot have any full-time employees (typically defined as those working 1,000+ hours per year) other than a spouse. The Setup Process with Babylon Wealth Babylon Wealth Management acts as your advisor and partner, leveraging our institutional relationship with Altruist Financial to host the plan. Step 1: Initial Consultation Schedule a discovery call with a Babylon advisor to discuss your business structure, tax bracket, and retirement goals. They will help determine if a Solo 401k is better for you than a SEP IRA or a Defined Benefit Plan. Step 2: Establish an EIN Even if you are a sole proprietor using your Social Security number for taxes, a Solo 401k requires its own Employer Identification Number (EIN) for tax reporting purposes. Step 3: Plan Documentation Babylon will help you complete the Adoption Agreement and Basic Plan Document . These documents officially establish the plan and outline its features, such as: Roth Option: Choosing to allow after-tax contributions. Loan Provisions: Deciding if you want the ability to borrow up to $50,000 from your plan. Step 4: Account Opening & Funding Once the plan is established, you will open the actual brokerage account (the “custodial account”). You can fund this via: New Contributions: Periodic or lump-sum transfers from your business bank account. Rollovers: Consolidating funds from previous 401(k), 403(b), SEP IRA, or Traditional IRAs. I am a fiduciary financial advisor and the founder of Babylon Wealth Management. Our firm provides bespoke wealth managemen t and personalized financial planning to busy families in the Bay Area. Many of our clients are tech workers, physicians, business owners, professionals preparing for retirement, and young families looking to build financial independence. I grew up in Bulgaria in a small town with strong family values. Around the time I was ten years old, the Iron Curtain collapsed, and our country embraced democracy. The next ten years were tough. Seeing my parents working hard to provide for my brother and me formed my decision to have a career in Finance. I also learned that small things in life could bring you enormous joy. I learned how to be resilient and resourceful. After completing a bachelor’s degree in Accounting at Varna University of Economics in Bulgaria, at the age of 23, I moved to New York City to pursue a Master of Business Administration at Pace University. I was fortunate to have a full merit-based scholarship and finished graduate school with no student loans. Upon completing grad school, I joined the ranks on Wall Street for nearly twelve years. I specialized in risk management and option strategies for equity and fixed-income products for Deutsche Bank and Wells Fargo. In 2006, I obtained a highly recognized CFA designation. Living in New York without family support was a life-changing experience for me. I arrived at JFK Airport on August 24, 2002. I stayed in a hostel for two weeks and later moved in with three of my fellow Bulgarian students into a one-bedroom apartment in the Bronx. There was a time when I only owned $200, just enough to pay for the next month’s rent. I often contemplated returning to Bulgaria, but somehow, I always pushed through life’s adversities. I’ve learned to appreciate each moment, big or small, that life presents. These challenges have helped me develop strength and flexibility, which support my practice as a financial advisor. I met my wife in New York City. We got married in 2015 and, shortly after, moved to Walnut Creek in the San Francisco Bay Area to start our family. We have a son at kindergarten and a daughter who is currently in preschool. I was an avid runner and completed three New York City Marathons. Due to an injury in my achilles, the best running days are behind me. However, I remain active and love to set and overcome personal milestones. Our family enjoys spending time together. When I am not providing financial advice, I am a full-time dad. We spend our weekends browsing Downtown Walnut Creek and making day trips in the Bay Area. Our favorite Bay Area destination is Point Reyes, where we go for hiking, freshly made cheese, and oysters. My wife’s favorite bakery is at Point Reyes station and sells delicious cinnamon rolls. Our favorite holiday destination is the Big Island of Hawaii, where we enjoy the friendliness of Hawaiian people, the versatility of the climate, the fresh seafood and poke, malasadas, and, of course, shaved ice. I started Babylon Wealth Management to help families and hard-working professionals start their financial journey on a firm footing. Being a fee-only financial advisor, I never earn sales commissions or sell investment products. Furthermore, I am committed to acting in my client’s best interest by providing trusted and bespoke wealth management advice.
