OUR SERVICES
How It Works
Step 1: Learn to Lift Package
Schedule two, 90-minute private sessions.
Designed for everyone from beginner to advanced, these two sessions will cover four main lifts, warming up, and programming basics.
For those who are brand new to lifting, your coach will introduce you to the gym environment and equipment, and make sure that you feel informed, comfortable, and safe as you begin your lifting.
If you are more advanced, we will be able to cover more technique and programming details, and integrate your training background into the sessions.
Learn More >>>
Step 2: Enroll in Small-Group Class
Choose from our schedule of 6-on-1 small group classes. Your enrollment reserves your space and time in the gym.
Unlike drop-in fitness classes, our enrollment structure (where you choose consistent days and times) is designed for supported learning, facilitating independence and growth over time for all levels. Meeting at the same days and times each week, and receiving consistent coaching, will grow your confidence as you get stronger.
Customized programming ensures that your workouts are appropriate, progressive, and enjoyable.
Classes are two hours long, but many lifters can finish their programmed workouts in about 90 minutes.

TESTIMONIALS
What People Are Saying
I came to Katherine as a brand new lifter looking to improve my overall fitness in preparation for a 2,500 mile off-road motorcycle race.
She’s super encouraging, and truly excited about lifting! I really appreciate her ability to demystify entire strength training experience–from how the mechanics of individual lifts work to gym culture.
I’m amazed at how I’ve not only gotten significantly stronger in the few months I’ve been working with her, but my stamina has improved dramatically as well. I am so thrilled to have her in my corner!
Risa
Gwyn is an awesome coach: kind and supportive, but also rigorous about correct form. She is knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and has a plan in mind for both coaching sessions and the ones on my own. I look forward to going to the gym – and cannot believe I’m saying that!
I wish I had known about weight-lifting years ago. I never thought it applied to someone like me. So wrong. Just doing things around the house is easier. Lifting airplane luggage into the overhead compartment – magically lighter. General body wellbeing better. Thanks, Gwyn!
Helen
I drove just shy of 100 miles to meet Jeremy for a personal training session. It was well worth the time and money. He was able to notice and correct my form flaws, and provide correction in a way that helped immediately.
Jeremy is very professional, he knows his craft and is capable of teaching in a way that even I could grasp. He is personable, sincere and really wants to make you better. He never once made me feel rushed for time, he wanted me to leave with the confidence that I knew the lifts properly.

[email protected] Facebook RSS Facebook RSS About Learn to Lift Classes and Rates Covid Safety FAQ Store Get Started Select Page Frequently Asked Questions Do you offer drop-ins? Sadly, we do not. We are a private training facility for current clients only. If you are looking for a drop-in facility nearby, we recommend Berkeley Ironworks . I’ve never lifted before. Can I still join? Yes! We are oriented toward beginners and there is absolutely no prerequisite knowledge, experience, or ability necessary to start strength training. We introduce beginners to strength training via the Learn to Lift intro package . What are the classes like? Classes are mixed level small group sessions where you receive personal attention from a coach. You’re not necessarily doing the same thing as everyone else. Your enrollment reserves your space and time in the gym, and you can lift at your own pace, supported by your coach. What if I am nervous to work out in front of people? We have a really friendly and low-pressure gym! We don’t have any mirrors in the gym, and because everyone is doing their own workout, nobody is comparing themselves. We’re all here to get stronger than yesterday, not stronger than each other. What is the Learn to Lift? What if I already know how to lift? Our Learn to Lift is a two session package of 90 minute one-on-ones with a coach. It is a requirement for joining classes. We go over everything you need to know for classes. If you’ve lifted before, that’s awesome! We still want to get to know you and introduce you to our way of lifting, programming, and training. Do I have to be in class? Can’t I just buy a membership? We do not offer memberships without class plans, because everyone at our gym is receiving coaching. By maintaining a coaching relationship with everyone in the gym, we are able to cultivate a strong and connected community. [email protected] Facebook RSS Facebook RSS About Learn to Lift Classes and Rates Covid Safety FAQ Store Get Started Select Page Covid Safety Bay Strength strives to provide as safe a training environment as possible. To minimize the risk of exposure to covid to all our lifters as well as our coaches, Bay Strength has taken the following steps. Vaccinations, including at least one booster shot, are required for all lifters. Bay Strength coaches verify vaccination status for lifters during Learn to Lift intro sessions. As updated vaccines are made available, we may require additional booster shots. Air inside the gym is cleaned and recycled once every 7.5 minutes. Our two HVAC units are equipped with MERV-13 filters, and wall mounted and floor air purifiers are situated throughout the gym. All air inside the gym is cleaned and changed over once every 7.5 minutes. Four exterior doors and windows are kept open at all times for added ventilation. During times of high levels of COVID transmission, masks are required and must be KF94, N95, or better. We require high quality, well fitting masks during these times due to how contagious Omicron variants of Covid are. Currently, masks are optional. We will continue to update our practices as needed to provide the best lifting environment possible while protecting the health and wellbeing of our entire community. Covid Exposure What to do if you are sick If you are exhibiting symptoms of illness at any time (congestion, cough, fever, body aches, headache, chest tightness), we ask you to please stay out of the gym until your symptoms subside and you test negative. In case of a known exposure to Covid-19 If you have symptoms or test positive: you must stay home for the recommended quarantine time (10 days) and test negative prior to return. If you are symptom-free with a negative rapid test: you may train in the gym while wearing a mask for 10 days after exposure. If you are symptom-free with a negative PCR test: you may lift without a mask (unless masks are currently required for all). Failure to follow these policies may result in the termination of your membership. Thank you for helping us keep each other safe! Frequently Asked Questions & Further Resources What are current levels of Covid in the Bay Area? There are multiple sources of data on current covid levels. The CDC’s community levels are a looser, broad measure of Covid levels. Currently, Alameda County levels are medium . Before 2022, the CDC used a transmission map , which is still available. Currently, transmission levels are high . Cal-SuWers publishes data on wastewater levels of Covid . Wastewater monitoring is an effective means of understanding current levels of Covid. At-home tests generally do not get reported into centralized health authorities, while wastewater monitoring will detect Covid levels in the population at large regardless. Covid ActNow is a non-profit that publishes current data and resources on Covid safety. Alameda County publishes data on current levels of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. Bay Strength monitors all the above data and public health experts in determining our policies on Covid safety. Is it safe to train indoors? We strive to make indoor training as safe as possible by requiring vaccinations, maintaining a high level of air purification, and requiring high quality masks during times of high covid spread. Unfortunately it is impossible to make training in any environment 100% safe in the context of the pandemic. We believe we have created a much safer environment indoors, and have to date avoided any outbreaks of covid at the gym. Ultimately individuals must judge the risks to the best of their ability. Why do you require KF94 or N95 masks? As the pandemic has gone on, covid has evolved to become increasingly contagious. While cloth and surgical masks are better than no mask at all, there is a strong consensus among public health experts that for good protection, individuals must wear well fitting KF94, N95, or better masks. Because of this, and because people exhale forcefully while training, we require high quality masks during times of high covid transmission. This policy is in place to protect the health of all lifters and coaches, and make training as accessible as possible to all. Further resources: Are cloth masks enough to protect against Omicron? – Cleveland Clinic Cloth masks not effective against Omicron – New York Times Do we need N95 masks to protect against Omicron? – Wall Street Journal I’ve already had Covid. Do I still need to wear a mask? During times of high community spread, masks are required for everyone. Unfortunately, it is possible to be reinfected by covid . For everyone’s safety, everyone must wear a mask during times of high community transmission. Will you be opening another outdoor gym? From September 2020 through June 2022, we operated an outdoor gym in El Cerrito in order to provide a safer space for folks to train. Sadly, we had to close the gym in early July 2022 due to planned development of the property. We do not currently have plans to open another outdoor gym.
