The new technology serves as a critical emergency communication system, which connects the entire school District. Beaumont, CA –– Beaumont USD is nearly finished rolling out its new emergency radio operations system after being awarded a $348,464 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice in 2024. California has declared 70 disasters in just the last five years according to USAFacts.org , with the City of Beaumont having experienced its own share of emergencies. The new communications system connects all District campuses ranging from Calimesa, Banning, and Beaumont in the event of a crisis, such as a major earthquake. “In the event of an emergency, cellphones can become overloaded, sometimes making it impossible to place a call. Our emergency radios allow us to immediately communicate with school sites without needing to rely on cell towers. It’s also faster. Click a button and we’re immediately talking to every school,” explains Serenity Junge, Beaumont USD Risk and Safety Director who submitted the grant. Beaumont USD Risk and Safety Technician Albert Nolasco was instrumental in doing a lot of the leg-work for the radio system once the grant was awarded. “This project took months of work and still continues. We worked with Motorola to conduct heat studies, installed radio repeaters on rooftops, distributed radios, and conducted the first Districtwide test of the radios during the 2025 Great California Shakeout.” The Great California Shakeout is an annual, statewide drill involving millions of participants in preparation for an earthquake. Each school has a minimum of three Motorola XPR 3500 radios, with enhanced safety features including 28-hours of battery life, instant push-to-talk communications, and the ability to remotely activate a radio if an employee is unresponsive. In addition to the emergency radio system, the District maintains around 700 emergency supply containers, which includes high-calorie meal replacement bars, clean-drinking water pouches, mylar thermal blankets, battery-free flashlights, first-aid pouches, and C-A-T ® tourniquets. “When kids are in our care, we put enormous thought into their safety. I encourage every household to also make a plan and build an emergency kit,” explains Junge. Only 25% of households in the Inland Empire say they’re prepared for a natural disaster according to a report by the Public Policy Institute of California. The Board of Trustees also approved a one-time compensation increase of 6.25%, off the schedule, based on each team member’s annual salary, effective July 1st of 2022. We are facing some challenging economic times and must remain regionally competitive regarding salaries and health benefits packages.  The 12.5% salary increase is the highest implemented in the recent history of the Beaumont Unified School District, and among the highest in Riverside County for the 2022-23 school year. The starting salary for a new teacher will increase from $54,000 to $60,000 dollars per year. For teachers with more than 20 years of teaching experience, who are in the final step of the last column of the salary schedule, compensation will increase from $111,000 to $125,000 per year. The agreement also includes language regarding student attendance and raising the District’s overall attendance rate. As we all know, the pandemic significantly impacted school attendance over the past two years. Research shows that poor attendance - especially in the early years of a student’s educational journey - can influence whether or not they will read proficiently by the end of third grade. When students improve their attendance, they also improve their academic prospects and chances of graduating. Getting our students to school is a collective effort. Therefore, included in the agreement, any increase in the districtwide student attendance rate, above 95%, by the state’s P-2 reporting period in April 2023 will be applied towards the health and welfare benefits package of employees in the 2023-24 school year.  The Beaumont Unified School District and the California School Employees Association - Chapter 351 reached a comparable tentative agreement.  CLASSIFICATION Range Step 1 Step 9 CURRENT HOURLY RATE NEW HOURLY RATE WITH 12.5% INCREASE INCREASE CURRENT HOURLY RATE NEW HOURLY RATE WITH 12.5% INCREASE INCREASE Campus Security I 4 15.28 17.18 1.90 20.91 23.52 2.61 Health Aide II 9 17.28 19.44 2.16 23.65 26.61 2.96 Custodian II 13 19.08 21.46 2.38 26.11 29.37 3.26 Bus Driver 15 20.04 22.55 2.51 27.43 30.86 3.43 Maint. Beaumont, CA –– Beaumont Unified School District's elementary students were bumping elbows as they excitedly filled their bags with organic fruits and vegetables at an exclusive popup farmers market just in time for the holidays. Containers of fresh, organic produce were delivered from Old Grove Orange Farm to a Beaumont elementary school. Over the course of the day, over a hundred TK - 5 grade students heard Jacqueline “Farmer Jackie” Stewart from Old Grove Orange share fun facts about Valencia oranges, pomegranates, chard, carrots, and apples. “You have to make sure you eat a lot of rainbow carrots to protect your eyes, " Stewart explained, as she held up an orange, white, and purple version of the vegetable. At the end of the presentation, students were handed bags and were instructed to choose three items from the organic produce containers. “I got um, a baby apple and she said apples help your brain,” said third grade student Brooklyn as she showed off her selection. The interactive educational experience was available to students enrolled in Beaumont USD’s Expanded Learning Opportunities Program called Scholars On Vacation with the partnership of the District’s Child Nutrition Services department. The free program is a critical community wide benefit for families, as well as local businesses, since it allows families to work while school is out of session for a prolonged period of time. The Beaumont Bean aims to provide professional and social experience to the participants. Beaumont, CA – The awakening aroma of freshly brewed coffee and pumpkin spice swirled through the cool fall air at the grand opening of the “Beaumont Bean,” a new coffee shop at the Beaumont Adult School. The Beaumont Bean is run by adult students with various learning and/or physical disabilities with the instructional guidance of friendly Adult Transition Program staff. The coffee shop was launched by the program's teacher, Holly Jenkins and with the financial assistance of a BEST Foundation grant. Jenkins explained that all sales “go back into the coffee shop to keep the coffee shop running. Anything extra goes to field trips, an end of the year party, or anything that this student body needs for the 24-25 school year.” While the coffee shop is not open to the public, the coffee shop does serve the school’s other students who are enrolled in a multitude of other programs, including Vocational Nursing, English-language courses, and the High School Equivalency program. Neighboring employees at the San Gorgonio Middle School also frequently place orders for a morning pick-me-up. “The coffee shop has helped students with disabilities grow so much because they are able to take orders and talk to customers,” explained Kang Yang, a Health Instructional Aid who is one of the staff members who assists with the program. Students also learn practical math skills by making the correct change for cash payments under the patient and encouraging support of Ramzi Sunna, a continuous roving substitute teacher. “When I turn 22, I will try to get a job at Starbucks or anywhere that will keep me in charge of coffee and stuff,” said Marissa Segovia, a student enrolled in the program. Throughout the busy grand opening, Segovia was darting throughout the kitchen, turning the customers morning into blissful sips of cappuccino. Riverside County, CA – The California Department of Education recently recognized 10 elementary schools in Riverside County for their exceptional performance. Two of the schools listed for the 2025 California Distinguished Schools are within the Beaumont Unified School District––Palm Innovation Academy and Starlight Elementary School. The prestigious recognition is awarded to elementary schools who show “excellence and growth in academic achievement and ensuring a positive school climate,” according to the California Department of Education news release. Each school’s reported data is carefully analyzed to see if they meet criteria in one or two categories––“Closing the Achievement Gap” or “Exceptional Student Performance.” The Beaumont Unified School District Board President responded to the news, stating, “This prestigious recognition underscores the dedication and hard work of the students, staff, administration, and families at Palm Innovation Academy and Starlight Elementary School, further solidifying the Beaumont School District's commitment to providing outstanding educational opportunities. Since the distinguished award is granted to schools using data, it is no surprise that both of the elementary school principals spoke on their data-focused strategies. “We look at data trends––grade level, classroom level, and each individual at a granular level” to determine what is the most effective way to improve in an area, says Palm Innovation Academy Principal Idali Lopez. Assistant Principal Kathryn Mayfield added, “Without data, it’s just an opinion.” Starlight Elementary School Principal Yesennia Casillas said, “We are deeply committed to making data-driven decisions. I regularly conduct data chats with teachers to analyze student performance after each benchmark assessment, which helps us pinpoint individual student needs. Teachers also hold data discussions with each student, setting personalized goals for growth.” While the two principals are focused on tracking school metrics, they never lose sight of their reason why––the kids. Lopez says they’re “changing the lives of students for generations to come.” She further added, “When we change one student’s life through education, we are impacting the future of their kids, and even their grandkids.” When Lopez became the principal at Palm Innovation Academy in 2022, the school was suffering some of the lowest District scores. Yet, in just two years, all that turned around because of her unwavering high expectations. “By receiving this award, we are breaking the harmful myth that educators should have ‘zipcode expectations.’ Educators need to believe their students can achieve high results regardless of their socioeconomic status. This is how we change the story for communities and generations.” Both principals stressed that the “distinguished schools” is not their award alone––it is an award that reflects the hard work of everyone in the District––from students, parents, and neighbors. “It’s truly a collective effort,” says Casillas. Superintendent Mays Kakish expressed her appreciation of the many people involved that made this recognition possible. “This recognition is the result of a lot of hard work. I couldn't be more proud of both school's team members for all they do. I am also grateful for having the support of our Board of Trustees who do so much for the community,” said Kakish. The recognized schools will be awarded by the California Department of Education on Friday, May 30, 2025 at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, California.
