Sweet 3-year-old Miniature Pinscher mix, Triumph, was frolicking in the yard when he slipped, fell, and shattered his tiny front leg. The injury was severe and the leg beyond repair. Things got even worse when Triumph’s family made the heartbreaking decision to abandon him at the hospital due to the cost of care. Sweet 3-year-old Miniature Pinscher mix, Triumph, was frolicking in the yard when he slipped, fell, and shattered his tiny front leg. The injury was severe and the leg beyond repair. Things got even worse when Triumph’s family made the heartbreaking decision to abandon him at the hospital due to the cost of care. Suddenly, this little dog was in terrible pain, frightened, and all alone. When the hospital contacted us, we did not hesitate to help. Berkeley Humane’s low-cost spay and neuter program is designed to support individuals and families who are struggling financially but are trying to do the right thing and have their dog and cat altered, therefore reducing the number of unwanted pets in local shelters. Our program has a very limited surgery schedule therefore we are not able to serve other non-profit rescue organizations, managed cat colonies, pet breeders or other groups. Appointments are for no more than 3 pets per family per year. We are a Fear Free Certified® clinic, and our medical staff are specially trained to care for the physical and emotional health of the pets in our care, ensuring every animal has a safe and secure visit. When clients miss appointments or reschedule with less than 24 hour notice, we see fewer patients, making it difficult to maintain our affordable prices. To maintain our prices we have established a Missed Appointment Policy/Deposit Requirement. The full deposit will be applied to the cost of the surgery. This policy allows us to continue to offer the community affordable veterinary care. At about the same time, and in response to these reports, an informal organization known as the Berkeley Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) began advocating for better treatment of animals in the area… READ MORE In early 1905 a group of local civic and business leaders came together to discuss the need to improve conditions and work toward creating more humane treatment of “dumb animals,” which in the vernacular of the time simply referred to animals who could not speak for themselves. On September 20 of that year, a meeting was held in the Town Hall (Berkeley did not become a city until March 11, 1910) to officially form the Berkeley SPCA. A local real estate developer, Mr. Edward L. Coryell, was elected President of its Board of Directors. Immediately following the formation of the Berkeley SPCA, Berkeley town officials assigned all responsibility for its Pound operations to the newly formed organization and Mr. Coryell also became the new Berkeley Poundmaster. Changes came quickly. Just a year later, in 1906, The Oakland Tribune published a report about a quick and impressive turnaround at the Berkeley Pound under the new leadership of the Berkeley SPCA. Old buildings were torn down and replaced by new sanitary structures, the yard was “cleared and planted and animals were no longer being starved to death.” Over the next decade the organization grew and the Board of Directors included many prominent citizens and elected officials. In 1908 August “Gus” Vollmer was elected Board President. Mr. Vollmer was Berkeley’s first Chief of Police and is widely credited for creating the field of modern day criminology. This relationship between the Berkeley Police and animal welfare has continued to be a very important one. The Berkeley SPCA was thriving and very active. In 1927 a new milestone was reached when the organization filed legal papers with the State of California to officially become the Berkeley Humane Society “dedicated to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.” Mattie E. Lovegrove, her sister Alice C. Robinson, Reverend Hans C. Hutteball, Thore A. Netland, and Minister Donna H. Smythe all signed the official documents on December 17, 1927. Edna Coryell, long time animal welfare volunteer and wife of our first Board President, Edward Coryell, then began the arduous task of finding a permanent home for the Berkeley Humane Society. Over the next several years she hosted card tournaments to help raise the funds needed. In 1933 the property at the corner of Ninth and Carlton Streets was acquired, which is still the home of the Berkeley Humane Society. When the doors first opened the shelter was called Animal Rescue Haven and served as both a rescue and boarding facility. As the needs of the community’s animals shifted throughout subsequent decades, education programs, community pet support programs and a veterinary hospital were added. Berkeley Humane closed its public veterinary practice to the public in early 2009 to focus on providing medical care exclusively for shelter dogs and cats, making it the first veterinary hospital in the East Bay to serve only homeless animals. In the 1970s, the Board of Directors committed to a revolutionary adoption guarantee model: that no healthy or treatable shelter animals in the Society’s care would be euthanized. This commitment set the stage for Berkeley Humane placing 100% of healthy and treatable animals into loving homes for nearly forty years, a commitment that awarded Berkeley Humane and partner organizations the prestigious Maddie’s Fund Lifesaving Award in 2009. From our humble beginnings in a renovated former pool hall in West Berkeley, Berkeley Humane continues to expand and adapt the services of the organization to meet the ongoing needs of the community’s animals and their human guardians. Berkeley Humane’s work would not be possible without its strong partnerships with local animal welfare groups and the support from animal-loving friends who share the Society’s vision. Today, Berkeley Humane has thousands of supporters and volunteers, and remains steadfast in its practices to curb pet overpopulation in the East Bay and give pet guardians the tools they need to ensure that their pets remain happy and healthy in their homes for the rest of their lives. Despite a major fire that destroyed the Adoption Center on May 20, 2010, Berkeley Humane remains fully committed to its mission and vision. Our programs are in full operation and we continue to provide critical services to our community every day. We are fortunate to be working with a talented team of professionals, including Noll & Tam Architects and the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program, to design the most efficient new building possible on the site of our current hospital and fire-damaged shelter. The process from start to finish will take a few years, and we will have to be patient. But we know that when it’s done, we will have a beautiful, state-of-the-art shelter where animals will receive the best care and highest standards of welfare possible, and where community members will find the love and companionship of a new pet. Trial adoptions are only available for residents of Contra Costa and Alameda counties. Golden Paws Senior adopters (65+) receive a 50% reduced fee for falling in love with an older pet (7+ years). Our goal is to support your journey and ensure your success. Post-Adoption Advice Berkeley Humane adopters can contact us for behavior or health advice. Post-Adoption Medical Support If you adopted an animal from Berkeley Humane within the past seven (7) days and have any health concerns about your pet, please contact the Berkeley Humane Veterinary Hospital at 510-845-7735. During this time period, we provide free post-adoption medical care by appointment only for shelter-associated conditions including internal and external parasites, respiratory infections (including kennel cough and feline upper respiratory infection), and incision complications. Our post-adoption medical care policy does not include routine, preventive care (vaccines, deworming), treatment for post-adoption accidents/injuries, treatment of other pets in the household, or treatment that is outside the capabilities of our basic hospital facility. Berkeley Humane partners with 19 VCA hospitals to provide care for pets adopted from our organization. Adopters receive up to $250 of care (excluding certain conditions) for up to 14 days from the date of adoption. Berkeley Humane adopters may also receive one complimentary exam within five (5) days of adoption from local veterinary hospitals listed here . Berkeley Humane’s low-cost spay and neuter program is designed to support individuals and families who are struggling financially but are trying to do the right thing and have their dog and cat altered, therefore reducing the number of unwanted pets in local shelters. Our program has a very limited surgery schedule therefore we are not able to serve other non-profit rescue organizations, managed cat colonies, pet breeders or other groups. Discover the Joy of Fostering Berkeley Humane has transitioned to a fully foster-based model during the construction of the new Bay Area Animal Resource Center (BAARC) . Every pet waiting for adoption must be housed with a foster family . Our ability to save lives now depends more than ever on the kindness of people opening their homes. Start Fostering How Fostering Works Foster parents provide loving, temporary care for Berkeley Humane animals in their own homes. It’s a life-changing experience for the animals and a truly rewarding one for the humans who help them heal, grow, and find their forever families. We receive dogs, cats, kittens or puppies that need a temporary home and care—ideally until they are adopted. You are contacted by the foster team for foster availability. Logistics for animal pick up or delivery with all available information and supplies are secured. The animal goes to foster home until they are adopted. Ready to Start? Become a Foster Now! Contact our Foster Program ! We would love to hear from you. How long do animals stay in foster care? That depends on the animal’s age, medical history, and sometimes temperament. Underage kittens will need care until they turn 2 months of age. If they have a medical illness or need time to decompress, that may affect how quickly they go up for adoption. The minimum is generally 2 weeks but it can take longer. Can I become a Foster if I have pets of my own? Yes! We ask that they stay separated if it is a cat/cat or dog/cat combination. There is the possibility of integrating them at the discretion of the Foster Program Manager. We allow (fully vaccinated) resident dogs to cohabitate with puppies and adult dogs (adult dogs may require a meet and greet with the resident dog first). What expenses are involved in fostering an animal? None. We supply you with everything we feel the foster animal needs to be comfortable. I live in an apartment. Can I still foster an animal? Of course! We will discuss with you how you can best support an animal’s mental and physical enrichment in any type of home. What types of medical services and support are available while fostering an animal? We offer both medical and behavioral support from trained staff. Our foster animals receive health checks, spay/neuter surgery, and preventative care from our hospital in Pinole. If an after-hour emergency does occur, we have emergency protocols for the animal to be seen by a local hospital. I work full-time. Can I still foster an animal? Yes, you can! Although kittens and puppies would not be a suitable fit, fostering an adult cat or an older dog should work with a full-time schedule. What if the foster animal isn’t working out in my home or I need to return early? Because we no longer have a shelter for our animals to be kept, we ask that fosters hold onto their animals until we can find a replacement foster.
