We will conduct a thorough examination on your first visit to determine the best course of action to achieve dental health and your goals. We will: Take full mouth x-rays to identify any current problems and to use as a baseline on future visits to detect early signs of problems. Assess gum condition and health. Examine teeth for cavities and condition of old dental restorations. Perform a head and neck exam, including salivary glands and lymph nodes, for swelling or other abnormalities. Screen for oral cancer and TMJ (jaw joint). Clean and polish your teeth. Why do I need to discuss my medical conditions with the dentist? Many health conditions are indicated in the mouth and can affect oral health, so your medical information is very important in diagnosing issues with your teeth, gums and mouth. How often do fillings need to be replaced? Fillings can last for many years, but over time they wear down, discolor, crack and sometimes fall out. Early detection of problems with fillings can help you avoid getting cavities under the filling and causing more serious decay. Let us know if you’re experiencing any pain. We’ll check your fillings at every visit to determine if any need to be replaced. Do you use composite (tooth colored) or amalgam (silver) fillings? Composite fillings are widely preferred to amalgam today to fill new cavities and replace old fillings needing repair. However, there are some instances when amalgam is still recommended, based on your individual health profile. In addition, some insurance providers will not approve composite fillings in posterior teeth, which would increase your out-of-pocket expenses. Are x-rays necessary? Absolutely. Dental x-rays are essential, preventative, diagnostic tools. Many oral conditions occur between teeth or under the gums or bones, undetectable by the human eye, and may have no early signs or symptoms. Left untreated, these conditions can create serious dental and general health problems, including loss of teeth and heart problems. Early detection with x-rays can make treatment much less painful, faster, and less expensive. The American Dental Association recommends getting a full series every three years. CHILDREN When should I start cleaning and brushing my child’s teeth? According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, you should begin cleaning your child’s gums with a soft cloth soon after birth. As soon as the first tooth appears, start brushing twice daily with a soft infant toothbrush and just a smear of toothpaste. When you come in for your child’s first visit, we’ll show you how to brush properly. At what age should I schedule my child’s first visit? The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends visiting the dentist as soon as the first tooth appears, or by the child’s first birthday. People of all ages and walks of life who have lost their teeth due to injury or disease have opted for dentures or partials to restore their biting surface and smile. Full dentures . Complete dentures replace all of your teeth on the upper and lower arch of your mouth or both. Dentures provide support for your facial muscles and restore your ability to eat a balanced diet. There are two types of full dentures: ** Immediate denture: custom made prior to extracting any or all remaining teeth and placed “immediately” following the extractions. This allows for the patient to have teeth while the gum tissue is healing. ** Complete denture: complete denture replaces an existing denture, whether you’ve had it for several years or you are moving to your permanent denture after the immediate denture has served its purpose. Partials . To replace one or more missing teeth that are surrounded by your natural teeth. They can attach to your natural teeth in several ways and prevent your remaining natural teeth from shifting. Berkeley Smile Studio uses the latest technology to create dentures and partials that look natural and make it easier to eat, speak and smile confidently. Dentures may take a while to adjust to, but as long as you practice good oral hygiene, they should help you enjoy a happy and healthy life. Implant-Supported Dentures It is often difficult to get a good fit with traditional dentures due to bone loss or shape of the mouth. Implant-supported dentures provide the stability needed to have great fitting dentures long term. Dr Truta will first surgically place special implants into the jaw bone. Once healing is complete, the denture is fastened into place using tiny “snaps” that allow the denture to attach to the implants in the jaw. Partials . To replace one or more missing teeth that are surrounded by your natural teeth. They can attach to your natural teeth in several ways and prevent your remaining natural teeth from shifting. The American Dental Association recommends twice-yearly exams and cleanings. Some people may need more frequent check-ups based on their dental needs. After your first exam, we’ll be able to determine the best frequency for your dental health. What do I need to bring to my first appointment? We will conduct a thorough examination on your first visit to determine the best course of action to achieve dental health and your goals. We will: Take full mouth x-rays to identify any current problems and to use as a baseline on future visits to detect early signs of problems. Assess gum condition and health. Examine teeth for cavities and condition of old dental restorations. Perform a head and neck exam, including salivary glands and lymph nodes, for swelling or other abnormalities. Screen for oral cancer and TMJ (jaw joint). Clean and polish your teeth. Why do I need to discuss my medical conditions with the dentist? Many health conditions are indicated in the mouth and can affect oral health, so your medical information is very important in diagnosing issues with your teeth, gums and mouth. How often do fillings need to be replaced? Fillings can last for many years, but over time they wear down, discolor, crack and sometimes fall out. Early detection of problems with fillings can help you avoid getting cavities under the filling and causing more serious decay. Let us know if you’re experiencing any pain. We’ll check your fillings at every visit to determine if any need to be replaced. Do you use composite (tooth colored) or amalgam (silver) fillings? Composite fillings are widely preferred to amalgam today to fill new cavities and replace old fillings needing repair. However, there are some instances when amalgam is still recommended, based on your individual health profile. In addition, some insurance providers will not approve composite fillings in posterior teeth, which would increase your out-of-pocket expenses. Are x-rays necessary? Absolutely. Dental x-rays are essential, preventative, diagnostic tools. Many oral conditions occur between teeth or under the gums or bones, undetectable by the human eye, and may have no early signs or symptoms. Left untreated, these conditions can create serious dental and general health problems, including loss of teeth and heart problems. Early detection with x-rays can make treatment much less painful, faster, and less expensive. The American Dental Association recommends getting a full series every three years. CHILDREN When should I start cleaning and brushing my child’s teeth? According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, you should begin cleaning your child’s gums with a soft cloth soon after birth. As soon as the first tooth appears, start brushing twice daily with a soft infant toothbrush and just a smear of toothpaste. When you come in for your child’s first visit, we’ll show you how to brush properly. At what age should I schedule my child’s first visit? The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends visiting the dentist as soon as the first tooth appears, or by the child’s first birthday. We can look for potential problems and help your child get to know us as their friend. These early visits can make your child’s experience with a dentist a positive one. Can my teenager come alone to the appointment? Please note that patients under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all visits. A dental emergency is a situation requiring immediate attention to save a tooth, alleviate pain, or stop bleeding. Some common types of emergencies occur due to trauma and may include cracked, chipped, broken, dislodged, or knocked out teeth. Losing a crown or filling, or an injury to your gums or teeth are also considered dental emergencies, especially if you have severe pain or swelling. If you experience any of these conditions, contact us immediately for an emergency appointment. If your tooth is knocked out, there are some steps to take to increase the chances of saving it. Try to set the tooth back in its socket without touching the root, but do not force it in. If you can't do that, place it between your gums and cheek or in some milk. Make sure you don't accidentally swallow the tooth. Time is of the essence here. You have less than two hours to have your tooth successfully re-implanted. Dental emergencies include dealing with severe tooth pain, which may indicate an infection or an abscessed tooth. Both these situations will require immediate medical attention. Rather than manually scaling your teeth, we use a device that vibrates at an extremely high frequency for effective and delicate cleaning of your teeth. The pulsating movements cause plaque and tartar to fall off your teeth and then we rinse them away with a water tip directly attached to the scaler. Our ultrasonic cleaning device also helps to eliminate tartar and a hard, calcified type of tartar called calculus. Before ultrasonic cleaning became mainstream, dentists had to scrape plaque and tartar manually. This sometimes resulted in damage to the patient’s tooth enamel. Ultrasonic cleaning most effective way to treat gum disease If you already have gum disease, ultrasonic cleaning reaches plaque and calculus deposits beneath the gum line in a way that hand scraping cannot achieve. We also prefer this method because it doesn’t put any physical pressure on the teeth. This is important for people who have gingivitis because they’re already prone to loosened teeth and don’t need to worry about having a tooth accidentally dislodged at the dentist. Patients who have put off dental cleanings will be happy to know that they’re now easy and painless. Prophylaxis More commonly known as a "cleaning", a prophylaxis is most often performed by a dental hygienist, however, dentists are fully trained to perform preventative cleanings as well. A prophylaxis procedure includes measuring the level of plaque build-up and using a special tool to measure “pocket-depth”, meaning how closely are the gums attached to the teeth. As plaque builds up, it wedges its way between the gum tissue and your teeth forming a “pocket”. Your hygienist will be removing the plaque and tartar buildup as well as polishing your teeth to remove any staining. Polishing also smoothes your teeth and removes rough spots that might attract bacteria. Your dental hygienist is able to reach and clean areas of the tooth surface, sometimes even below the gum line that you are not able to reach at home even with the best home care routine. This is why we recommend undergoing prophylaxis every six months. If you’re concerned you could have gum disease or just want to keep your teeth and gums as healthy as possible, speak to your dentist about prophylaxis treatment. Scaling and Root Planing Scaling and root planing is the primary method for treating periodontal (gum) disease. When plaque and tartar have built up at a greater depth than a preventative cleaning can tackle, your dental hygienist will recommend a scaling and root planing procedure. This means that they will be using specially-designed dental tools to remove the build-up below the gum line that is preventing the gum tissue from being tightly attached to the root surface of your tooth. Removing the build-up allows the gum tissue to heal and reattach to the tooth thereby preventing further contamination from the bacteria and halting further damage to your teeth and bone. In most cases, a local anesthetic is used during the procedure and you may experience some discomfort following. Your hygienist will give you suggestions for home care to aide in the healing process.
