Our Philosophy At Brightside Barbell we are working to create a gym where you can walk in and feel at home, like our space is a place where you can show up to train and be unapologetically yourself.  Strength. Community. Empowerment. The fitness industry as we know it is often problematic; constantly bombarding us with images and rhetoric that tell us we are not "enough" and we need to change. At Brightside Barbell, we are committed to creating a more inclusive space where misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, racism, body shaming, and diet culture are not casually accepted as the norm. Whether your aim is to learn a new skill, relieve joint pain, celebrate or improve your relationship with your body, PR your Clean and Jerk, or just show up and hang out with your friends, we aim to provide incredible coaching and programming to help you have a good experience and reach your goals.    We opened our doors in 2022 with three guiding principles: Strength, Community, and Empowerment. Strength. Strength training is an outstanding mechanism for improving physical and mental health; it's good for your bones, it can help stave off muscle loss as we age, it supports improved function in activities of daily living, and it can directly translate into greater confidence inside and outside of the gym. Plus, picking up heavy stuff is fun and feels good. While our functional fitness programming is designed to promote broad all-around fitness, you may find we have a bit more of a strength training bias than some other functional fitness gyms.   Community. Group classes are at the heart of what we do. Our classes are led by experienced & enthusiastic coaches who work to make sure each class is effective, safe, and fun. Group fitness   classes offer an excellent opportunity for community-building and camaraderie. The support of your gym friends (and some times a little friendly competition with them) can often provide a boost of motivation right when you need it most. We hope our group classes can foster a sense connection and belonging that contributes to your overall well-being. Empowerment. All Brightside athletes are encouraged to track details about their workouts in a personal log (such as the app SugarWOD) as a way to collect critical data that will help them monitor their progress and make informed choices as they work towards their goals. Ultimately we want  you  to become the expert on you own abilities.  Our coaches are here to provide you with instruction, feedback, and guidance along the way.    We’re not perfect, but we’re committed to continuously questioning the status quo, pushing the fitness industry and community to be better, and unlearning the societal B.S. we’ve all been taught. We strive to build a community of people that share our values and want to get stronger physically and otherwise, without the toxicity that is often so ubiquitous in fitness spaces.      Will you join us? Up Brightside Barbell 1920 Park Blvd,  Oakland, CA 94606 © 2025 by Brightside Barbell Privacy Policy | Terms & Conditions bottom of page --> Member Conduct Policies | Brightside Barbell top of page Home About Us Our Philosophy Meet the Team Member Conduct Policies The Legend of Rat Tail Athletics Group Classes Class Descriptions Schedule Brightside Fundamentals Personal Training Pricing Getting Started Contact More Use tab to navigate through the menu items. Member Conduct Policies To help us maintain a community of athletes with shared values of mutual respect, we ask all members to agree to our member conduct policies.   Thank you! Member Conduct Policies Members are expected to treat the staff, members, and facility with respect at all times. Violation of these standards may result in the immediate termination of your membership. Be cool. Misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, fatphobia, classism, and racism have no place in Brightside Barbell. We’re not perfect and neither are you but we expect you to be decent to one another and to respect our core value of creating a more inclusive workout space. Symptoms of COVID, cold, or flu? Please stay home. If you are experiencing ANY symptoms that may be due to COVID or the cold or flu, please do not attend classes or open gym. We encourage you to get tested and to follow all CDC guidelines. Please help us avoid the spread of illness and keep the gym safe for coaches and members. "Weight loss" is not our focus. Brightside Barbell exists to help our members build strength, resilience, and community. We recognize that every member has unique goals and motivations and for some members those goals may be weight or aesthetic-related, while other members may be attempting to separate movement and exercise from dieting and body size or shape. To help us cultivate a safe environment for everyone, we do ask that you refrain from discussing dieting, weight loss, or body recomposition inside the gym unless it is 1:1 with a coach. Leave the coaching to the coaches. We know you want to help and mean well, but please refrain from offering unsolicited advice to other athletes; leave the coaching to the coaches. If you have a question or concern, you are welcome to address it directly with a coach or manager, provided you are not interrupting instruction during a class or personal training session. Tracking your workouts & lifting weights is strongly encouraged. For your safety and progress, please record your weights, times, and reps when you workout. This information does not need to be shared, but it is important that you become an expert on your own abilities. Coaches can provide guidance, but they cannot dictate exact weights, reps, or time goals for all members. Free use of the SugarWOD app is included in your membership for this purpose. Equipment has no gender. In our gym we refer to equipment by its weight, size, or height. There are no “men’s” barbells or “women’s” barbells. We are aware that most sports, including Weightlifting, operate with binary gender competition categories and utilize certain standard weights for the men’s and women’s categories. That said, equipment has no “inherent” gender.     Shirts on. Until all nipples are free, no nipples are free. Keep your shirt on. Crop tops and sports bras are OK.   Don’t be a chalk monster. Keep chalk in the buckets. Don’t use it to make tally marks. Use chalk sparingly. If you spill chalk or leave significant handprints on the floors or equipment, please clean it up - we will happily provide the supplies to do so.    Be aware of your surroundings. Don't walk right in front of or behind someone who is lifting. Ensure the "drop zone" is clear from weights or other items that could be damaged or cause a barbell to ricochet into you or someone else if dropped.   Return equipment to its home. When you are done working out, please return all equipment to its storage spot.   Avoid assumptions. Avoid assuming anyone’s pronouns, abilities, or their comfort with contact, encouragement, or advice. Not all forms of encouragement are welcome by all people. A person’s outward appearance is not always indicative of their gender, pronouns, or performance ability. If you realize you made a mistake, simply apologize and move on. :)    No pets. We love your dog and we know your fur baby would never bark, poop, jump, or slobber but unfortunately some dogs aren’t quite as civilized as yours.   No children in the gym. We do not have dedicated play spaces, child care providers, or the other resources necessary to safely accommodate minors. Minors are considered unsupervised if their parents/caregivers/guardians are participating in any form of workout, stretching, mobilization, clinic, class, personal training session, or open gym session. Meet the team Our coaches come from diverse backgrounds but share a few things in common: they all love what they do and want to help you get strong and meet your goals. Strength. Community. Empowerment Head Coach & Co-Owner Brooks (they/them) Coach Brooks is a Trauma Informed trainer and has over a decade of experience in strength & conditioning coaching, personal training, corrective exercise, and nutrition. Coach Brooks is a CrossFit® Level 2 Trainer Certificate Holder and has a USA Weightlifting Level 2 certification. In addition to coaching, Brooks has worked in PT clinics and adaptive athletics programs around the San Francisco Bay Area. Coach Brooks graduated Magna Cum Laude from San Francisco State University with a B.S. in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Therapeutic Exercise and Neuromuscular Science. Co-Owner, Coach, & Business Manager Emily (she/they) Emily is a Bay Area native who has lived in and around Oakland for the last decade. She spent her youth as a competitive swimmer but spent most of her 20s living a sedentary life. In 2014, she joined a local gym and met Coach Brooks. The variety, the camaraderie, and the friendly competition in group functional fitness classes kept her motivated in a way no other "dry land" workout experience ever had before. Emily is a CrossFit® Level 1 Trainer (Online) Certificate Holder and she holds a BA in Physical Anthropology from UC Santa Cruz and an MBA from Mills College. Coach Jake (he/him) Jake began attending functional fitness group classes 2008 as cross-training for his collegiate volleyball career. Jake became a coach in 2015 and he's always eager to chat about how the things we do in the gym can be applied to life outside the gym. Whether it's kicking into a handstand, hitting that weightlifting goal, or just picking yourself up off the ground, Jake loves helping people achieve things they never thought they were capable of doing and wants to help you build a healthy, long lasting relationship with movement and fitness.  Jake is a CrossFit® Level 2 Trainer Certificate Holder. Coach Lilly (she/her) Lilly has been a long time athlete, with basketball taking a special place in her heart. Off-season cross-training for her basketball team initially brought her to functional fitness 6 years ago and she has since competed in local competitions. Before Brightside, Lilly worked as an EMT. Lilly funnels her passion for health and helping people into her practice as a coach. Lilly is a  CrossFit® Level 1 Trainer Certificate Holder  and will earn a B.S. in Kinesiology (exercise science) from San Francisco State University in 2025. Lilly hopes to pursue further education to become a Registered Nurse. Coach Isa (she/they) Isa has been coaching since 2017 and she is passionate about helping people of all ages and abilities reach their fitness goals. As a teen, Isa discovered sports and fitness as a tool to help overcome negative body image and improve health and became a nationally ranked junior tennis player and qualifier for USA Weightlifting’s National Under 25 Championships. Now, Isa is working towards becoming a touring professional tennis player. Isa is a CrossFit® Level 1 Trainer (Online) Certificate Holder, and she holds a B.S. in Nutritional Sciences: Physiology and Metabolism, and a Master of Information and Data Science, both from UC Berkeley. Coach Lexi (she/her) Lexi started group functional fitness classes in 2017 and immediately fell in love with the variety, the community, the friendly competition, and of course, getting strong! Lexi switched to exclusively training in Olympic weightlifting in 2019, did a few competitions, built out a home gym during the pandemic, and in 2023 got pregnant and had a baby. Postpartum she realized she missed the camaraderie and, yes, even the cardio in functional fitness classes. Lexi is still a huge weightlifting fan and you can often catch her watching competition live streams while working from home.  Lexi is a  CrossFit® Level 1 Trainer Certificate Holder. Coach Katie (she/her) Movement has always been a central part of Katie’s life, from competitive dance and lifeguarding to synchronized swimming, circus arts, and through-hiking the Camino de Santiago. However, it wasn’t until 2017, when she discovered functional fitness, that she truly began to identify as an athlete. Katie now feels stronger and more aligned with her body and self than ever before and is excited to empower others to feel strong and confident through functional fitness. Katie holds a Master’s degree in Recreational Therapy, is a CrossFit® Level 1 Trainer, and Certified Personal Trainer (NASM-CPT). Pilates Instructor Adelle (she/they) Adelle is a dedicated Pilates instructor and licensed massage therapist with 6+ years of teaching experience and 16+ years of massage therapy practice with a passion for lifting heavy things.   Adelle completed the 500 hour  Balanced Body Comprehensive Pilates Teacher training in Berkeley, CA with an emphasis on trauma informed teaching.   As a former endurance athlete, Pilates has been crucial in healing her body from chronic pain due to over training.  Coach Kristen (she/her) Kristen’s love for fitness & health didn’t really begin until her early twenties when she decided to quit smoking and run her first marathon After her first marathon, she continued to experiment with a variety workout trends but often felt stuck or got bored with the expectations many women are pushed towards in the gym; weight loss. When she discovered functional fitness, she saw a community of people that encouraged and elevated strong women.  She stopped stepping on a scale and had a completely new (and never ending) set of fitness goals that have transcended into her personal and professional life. Kristen is a  CrossFit® Level 1 Trainer Certificate Holder. Coach Steph (she/her) Steph (she/her) began her health and fitness journey after college in 2012 and has been doing functional fitness training since 2014. She has a deep love for movement and adventure; whether it's runs or hikes with her dog, horseback riding in Latin America, eating yummy new meals, or exploring local gyms while traveling abroad, Steph is always up for trying something new. A former teacher and principal, and now education entrepreneur, she’s excited to bring her experiences to her role at Brightside, where she’s committed to creating welcoming, supportive spaces for people to move their bodies and try new things. Steph is a  CrossFit® Level 1 Trainer (Online) Certificate Holder. The Legend of Rat Tail Athletics "But I thought your name was 'Brightside Barbell.' What's with Rat Tail Athletics?" If you're confused, allow us to let you in on the joke. It all started with an unfortunate haircut at the end of 2019. Perhaps an omen, if you will, of more unfortunate events to come... Before the shutdown, Co-Owner and Head Coach Brooks got an accidental Rat Tail which they thought hilarious... until barber shops closed down indefinitely. So Brooks did what any red-blooded American would do. They obstinately doubled down on their Rat Tail commitment, growing and nurturing it through the shutdown (see historical records on Instagram for photographic evidence). After two years, it has now become a part of the family, a sentient being that continuously tries to dictate the marketing direction of the gym. This led to Brooks INSISTING that Rat Tail Athletics become the actual name of the new gym. Co-Owner Emily, the pragmatic and practical Virgo that she is, of course vetoed this, BUT STILL, RAT TAIL ATHLETICS LIVES ON IN OUR HEARTS! So there you have it. Functional Fitness Functional Fitness group classes are at the heart of what we do at Brightside Barbell.  We offer these classes  five days a week. Functional Fitness Schedule SUN: 9am MON: 6am, 7am, Noon, 5pm, 6pm TUE: 6am, 7am, Noon, 5pm WED: 6am, 7am, Noon, 5pm, 6pm FRI:  6am, 7am, Noon, 4pm, 5pm Functional Fitness Class Description Brightside Barbell's Functional Fitness classes are designed to promote broad all-around fitness.  Functional Fitness workouts are designed to help you increase your strength, cardiovascular conditioning, and your general capacity to execute  the movements that are   integral to daily life (i.e. "functional" movements) ; things like squatting, hinging, pulling, pushing, and jumping.    Each 60 minute Functional Fitness class starts with a guided warm up, includes technical instruction and drills to help you improve your movement mechanics, and features the Workout of the Day (WOD). These classes are different every day and can be modified to help athletes of a wide range of ages and abilities improve their general fitness. Functional Fitness WODs mix many different exercise modalities to help you train multiple physical capacities at the same time.  The program includes elements from weightlifting, powerlifting, gymnastics, calisthenics, and plyometrics.  Workouts often incorporate equipment like jump ropes, dumbbells, kettlebells, and barbells. You can expect the length and intensity of the WOD to vary from day to day. Please note:   While we strive to make classes accessible to a broad range of abilities and experience levels, our Functional Fitness classes are not a good fit for everyone due to the inherent limitations of the group class format. If you have injuries or movement limitations, please feel free to contact us so we can help you determine if our group classes are right for you. Brightside Barbell Club is designed for athletes who want to focus on improving their Clean & Jerk and Snatch.   Each 75 minute class includes progressions and drills to help you perfect your Clean & Jerk and Snatch technique, accessory work to build strength, and no cardio. :) From time to time, class members will participate in local Weightlifting competitions. Competing is strictly optional. Classes are capped at 10 people. If your primary goal at Brightside is to improve in the Olympic lifts, we recommend attending Barbell Club twice a week. If you are also attending Strength & Conditioning classes, please note, Barbell Club and Strength & Conditioning are programmed independently and there may be times where it makes sense to prioritize attendance at one class over the other depending on your goals. Your coaches can provide guidance based on your goals. POWERLIFTING CLUB - Powerlifting The sport of Powerlifting consists of three lifts (aka "The Big Three"): Back Squat, Bench Press, and Deadlift.   Brightside Powerlifting Club is great compliment to Strength & Conditioning classes for athletes that want to improve their "Big Three" lifts. Each 60 minute class includes a rep scheme and accessory work to build strength... and no cardio. :) A coach is on site to provide guidance and feedback, however, Powerlifting club provides athletes the flexibility to pick 2 of the 3 lifts they'd like to work on that day in a work-at-your-own pace environment. From time to time, class members will participate in local Powerlifting competitions. Competing is strictly optional. Classes are capped at 15 people. PUMP CLUB - Bodybuilding Pump Club sessions are designed to help athletes build strength, stability, and control with workouts that draw from both bodybuilding and functional fitness methods. It's giving... Bodybuilding meets Metcon.    Pump Club programming is generally structured in 3 sections:  Part A & B will feature a main lift or superset that utilizes tempo training and emphasizes strength and hypertrophy (aka muscle growth). We will progressively increase the intensity of these main lifts over several weeks to maximize those gainZ.  Part C will be a short and simple metabolic conditioning workout (aka "metcon") that doesn't include barbell Olympic lifts. Back to All Classes Up Brightside Barbell 1920 Park Blvd,  Oakland, CA 94606 © 2025 by Brightside Barbell Privacy Policy | Terms & Conditions bottom of page --> Class Descriptions | Brightside Barbell top of page Home About Us Our Philosophy Meet the Team Member Conduct Policies The Legend of Rat Tail Athletics Group Classes Class Descriptions Schedule Brightside Fundamentals Personal Training Pricing Getting Started Contact More Use tab to navigate through the menu items.
