Utilizing the latest in energy-saving technologies and recycled building materials, the Center makes as light a footprint on the Earth as possible, taking into account the true life-cycle cost of building construction, operation, and maintenance. Designed by acclaimed architect Dan Solomon , the Brower Center follows the example of some of Europe’s most distinguished green buildings in both its contextual fit and use of innovative technologies. In so doing, the Brower Center is articulated with a distinct base, middle, and top. The base is formed by awnings, arcades, and entrances for the various ground floor uses, while the middle of the building is defined by exposed structural columns and various light control devices. A projecting upper floor and sculpted awning structure that orients photovoltaic panels southward toward the sun delineates the building’s top. The Brower Center has received a LEED Platinum rating , the highest possible rating from the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program, and is a certified Green Business by the CA Green Business Network of Alameda County.   The Brower Center is a proud member of the Nonprofit Centers Network . Through the Art/Act: Youth exhibition series, the Brower Center aims to empower and amplify young Bay Area artists. Since 2017, over 1,000 local students have engaged with environmental issues through an interdisciplinary, research-based creative process as participants in this program. This year, we invited students to reflect on the importance of cultivating grounded optimism in the face of the climate crisis. Every day, we are all besieged with a stream of dire news, conditioning us to assume worst-case scenarios and resign ourselves to their inevitability. The rise of the term “doom-scrolling” reflects how normalized this hopelessness has become. As a way to break out of this cycle, we asked students to reflect on climate success stories that inspire them. We invited students to imagine their best-case scenarios for the future, drawing on demonstrated wins from environmental changemakers as models for what is possible. Their sincerity and enthusiasm for their planet shines through in the art of this exhibition. We hope that this exhibition will inspire viewers to recognize our individual and collective power to impact the future of our planet through our actions every day. Tompkins—On Beauty , a photography exhibition and accompanying book honoring the life and legacy of conservationist Doug Tompkins. A Bay Area-based entrepreneur who founded The North Face and Esprit, Doug later stepped back from the companies to focus on philanthropy. His visionary land conservation work began in the early 1990s. He bought and donated millions of acres of land to the Chilean government to be preserved as national parks, the largest private land donation in history. He was a dear friend of the community that founded the Brower Center. The On Beauty exhibition has found a long-term home at the corporate headquarters of Patagonia in Ventura, CA. Patagonia made history when its founder and friend of Doug Tompkins, Yvon Chouinard, turned over ownership of the company so that all of the company’s future profits could be used to fight the climate and extinction crisis. We are pleased that this exhibition can continue to inspire through beauty. Do you want to learn more about Doug Tompkins, his legacy, and his leadership? On Beauty books are available by request below. The book is filled with hopeful essays and full-color photographs of the stunning South American landscapes and wildlife that Doug fought to protect. A donation of $35 is suggested. Copies of On Beauty are also available in the Brower Center lobby. In our Hazel Wolf Gallery, we feature the work of present-day artists working toward the same goals: creators of art that advocates for nature, biological and cultural diversity and environmental justice. Our core public facing programming includes the Art/Act exhibition series, which celebrates art and environmental activism through three main exhibitions per year. Our spring exhibition, Art/Act: Youth, showcases local youth artists from Berkeley, Skyline, and Richmond High Schools responding to an environmental theme. Our summer exhibition, Art/Act: Local, is a juried show highlighting emerging and mid-career artists, while our fall exhibition, Art/Act: Award, recognizes an established artist for their environmental advocacy every year. Over the years, our gallery has featured notable artists such as Maya Lin, Edward Burtynsky, and Richard Misrach. We proudly provide emerging and youth artists with the same museum-quality exhibitions that these celebrated artists enjoy. We accomplish our mission through programs that: Inform the public about environmental challenges we all face and bold actions we must take to remain a living planet Inspire people to recognize their own power and responsibility to act on behalf of the Earth Connect individuals and organizations dedicated to social equity and ecological sustainability We fulfill these commitments via: Art and Education— museum-quality exhibitions and public programs covering environmental issues and fostering engaged communities—including youth via our Art/Act: Educate program Resident Organizations— 20+ nonprofits and social enterprises housed in the Brower Center, which provide capacity building and networking opportunities that strengthen the environmental movement as a whole a Low-Waste Conference Center— hosting 300+ events annually for nonprofit and private businesses, and strengthening the green event industry by requiring clients to abide by green principles Over 45,000 people engage with the Center each year as we gather nonprofits, social entrepreneurs, artists, activists, and the general public in creative dialogue and action. But who was David Brower? Berkeley native David R. Brower is considered by many to be the father of the modern environmental movement. Eighty-eight years of courageous, contentious, and joyful activism made Brower one of the most successful advocates the Earth has ever known. A world-class mountaineer with more than 70 first ascents to his credit, Brower served as the first executive director of the Sierra Club (1952 - 1969). Under his tenure, the Club’s membership expanded tenfold, from 7,000 to 70,000 members, and became the nation’s leading environmental membership organization. While with the Sierra Club, he pioneered the use of media advocacy, including taking out full-page newspaper ads to dramatically communicate conservation issues. Brower also initiated an aggressive publishing program that produced over 70 books over his lifetime - including oversize formats with stunning high-quality nature photographs. David Brower later founded Friends of the Earth , a worldwide environmental network now active in 52 countries, and co-founded the League of Conservation Voters , the nation’s most influential environmental political action group. In 1982, Brower founded Earth Island Institute , an incubator organization that fosters and supports activist projects around the world. Brower successfully fought to stop dams in Dinosaur National Monument and Grand Canyon National Park. He led campaigns to establish 10 new national parks and seashores, including Point Reyes, the North Cascades, and the Redwoods. He was instrumental in gaining passage of the Wilderness Act of 1964, which protects millions of acres of public lands. Twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, Brower was also instrumental in leading environmentalists to rethink their early support of nuclear power. David Brower joined the environmental movement before it was even a movement, which forced him to do a little of everything: organizing, lobbying, speaking, teaching, advertising, writing, publishing, filmmaking. He created a legacy of activism that made the environmental movement not just one part of our everyday lives, but as a way to engage the world as a whole. live in.“ —bell hooks A Home for the Environmental Movement First opened in 2009, in downtown Berkeley, the David Brower Center advocates for the beauty, diversity, and ecological integrity of our planet and people, while providing permanent infrastructure that strengthens the environmental movement as a whole.
