Companies have come to us when they have been turned away by others. When a subsidiary company of the Johnson and Johnson Corporation came to us with a problem they had, they were not optimistic we could help. They had already been turned away by several companies prior to being referred to B&Z. They had a very powerful heart medication they needed to apply in just the right amount to a patch. This application had to be extremely precise.  We were told a few micrograms invariance could be fatal. Our team of designers, programmers, and machinists set out to solve the problem. In only two weeks, using CNC machining , lapping, and EDM manufacturing procedures we had a prototype machine ready for testing. We would later go on to produce several dozen of these machines in varying sizes for many different applications, including the medical CNC machining industry. Precision 5 axis machining uses the same axes as 3 axis and 4 axis machining but has an additional rotational axis. Traditional 3 axis and 4 axis machining moves vertical on the Y-axis, sideways on the X-axis, and back-and-forth on the Z-axis. 5 axis machining gives you two additional axes: a table rotation (C-axis) and the tilting table (A-axis).  Raw material is clamped into an indexing chuck or to a table. The spindle head assembly moves along the travel columns in unison with the chuck or index table to precisely maneuver the workpiece and the cutting tool to achieve the proper tool path required for removing material efficiently and effectively. The multiple rotational and axial movement of 5 axis milling and machining allows for extreme versatility in positioning and contouring. It also places the spindle head closer to the workpiece, allowing shorter cutting with less vibration and deflection, higher cutting speeds, tighter tool moves, and improved surface finishing. A 5 axis platform can configure material into complex shapes unachievable by other machining methods because of the additional axes and the exceptional mobility of workpiece to tool rotational axes. Additionally, the table and cutting tool on a 5 axis machine can be tilted, avoiding collision with the tool holder and allowing for better access to form and machine parts. A 4 axis machine performs the same functions as 3 axis machining, but with an additional axis. 4 axis machining adds rotation around the Y-axis. Machining has changed dramatically over time. The one spindle, one tool, one-man operation concept used in the last century has been replaced with multi axis milling services and turning centers that can perform multiple operations at the same time. Multi axis machines have a variable speed tool spindle head with a multidirectional rotary axes orientation. Raw material is clamped into position on a table. The machine’s spindle head assembly moves in unison with the table to precisely maneuver the material and cutting tool to remove material and form a part. Multi axis milling machines are operated via a computer numerical control (CNC) panel. More axes mean more power. This type of enhanced machining capability provides faster lead time and production turnaround with outstanding quality. My grandmother was a machinist for Westinghouse starting during World War 2 and retiring after 30 years machining parts for nuclear submarines. After serving in the USMC for 20 years, my father was a machinist for 25 years, and I have worked in a machine shop, this machine shop, since I was 13 years old, and that was a very long time ago. My oldest son is a machinist, as is the son of my General Manager. We have had many father-son and brother teams over the years and although the faces change, many of the names remain the same. All of the original team has passed on, but their sons and daughters and the knowledge they passed down to the rest of us carry on in their place.
