Somehow, this tradition has wound up in households around the world, but we do not seem to recognize where the Tooth Fairy’s story began, and surprisingly enough, it is only the Western world that practices the baby-tooth-for-money tradition. Around the world, many other cultures have their own version of the Tooth Fairy, and with that, their own traditions. The earliest form of baby tooth traditions began in some of the earliest recordings of human time. B. R. Townend, in 1960, compiled some of these rituals: The tooth was thrown into the sun The tooth was thrown into the fire The tooth was thrown between the legs of the child The tooth was thrown onto or over the roof of the house, often with an invocation to some animal or individual The tooth was placed in a mouse hole near the stove or hearth, or offered to some other animal The tooth was buried The tooth was hidden where animals could not get it The tooth was placed in a tree or on a wall The tooth was swallowed by the mother, child, or an animal These rituals of offering up baby tooth to a strong-toothed animal like a rodent was believed to grant the child teeth as strong as a rodent in the future. This was practiced across Europe, Russia, New Zealand, and even Mexico before the 1900’s. This led to the tradition of idolizing not a fairy, but a mouse. In Spain, the tooth-mouse is called, Ratóncito Pérez, and in France referred to as, La Petite Souris. In Madrid, a museum was built surrounding the character of Ratóncito Pérez (which you can view here:  http://www.casamuseoratonperez.es/ ). So, if the “Tooth Fairy” was actually a “Tooth Mouse” where on Earth did the fairy aspect come from? The European “good fairy” was a new concept in the 1900’s and started being incorporated into children’s’ movies and books; thus these two ideas merged to form the Tooth Fairy, who quite frankly was much more inviting than the Tooth Mouse. Her first appearance was in a play written by Esther Watkins Arnold in 1927. Okay, so now we know where this character came from, and some of the rituals contributing to the tradition we all know, but how did monetary compensation get involved? Many scholars believe that losing a baby tooth and growing an adult one is one of life’s first milestones into adulthood and money can symbolize some of the responsibilities, choices, and benefits of becoming an adult (in which Cindy Dell Clark mentions in her book “Flights of Fancy, Leaps, of Faith,” suggests is an American contribution to this tradition). The traditions of the Tooth Fairy do not just stop in Europe and North America. In Asia, when children lose their teeth, instead of placing it under their pillows at night, they throw them. According to which jaw you lost your tooth from, you would throw your tooth in the opposite direction – example, if you lost your tooth from your lower jaw, you would throw your tooth onto a rooftop. Along with this, children will wish for the teeth of a rodent in its place – again, to acquire big and strong teeth. It is also seen that in central Asia, children put their fallen teeth in animal fat and feed it to a dog (to obtain strong teeth like a dog) or bury them under trees, so their roots will be as rigid as a tree. In the Middle East and Northern Africa, children also throw their teeth, but solely to the sky (this tradition dates to the 13th Century). In South Africa, they follow the same American tradition, but instead of using a pillow, they place their baby teeth in a slipper. Most of this Tooth Fairy hunting can be attributed to Rosemary Wells from Northwestern University Dental School, who accredited herself as the Tooth Fairy consultant. She has uncovered a lot of the history behind the world’s traditions surrounding the Tooth Fairy. Our goal is to help decrease that anxiety and to help your child feel more comfortable when visiting our dental practice. Each type of sedation we offer works differently on each child. We provide multiple sedation options and we can discuss and recommend the most suitable type of sedation based on the child’s needs. Our primary goal is to treat your child in a safe environment while maximizing their comfort. Not all children require sedation, but it can be a valuable option for the right candidates. We have the training, capacity, and equipment to provide all types of sedation, including; laughing gas and oral sedation. We will discuss the right option for your child during your consultation appointment.  Is Sedation Safe for Children? In a short answer... yes The risk of anything catastrophic happening is exceptionally low, even lower than the chance of getting struck by lightning. Healthy patients who receive sedation dentistry in a dental office seem to be at no higher risk than those that receive treatment in a hospital. For the small percentage of patients who may be at high risk for possible complications, we will discuss alternative options. Patient safety is our utmost priority. List of Services Laughing Gas Sedation Laughing gas is the most common type of sedation used in dentistry. Your child will start by wearing a mask through which the gas is administered. They will remain awake throughout the appointment and when the gas is shutoff, it will only take a few minutes for your child to recover. The best part? Your child can resume normal activities right after their appointment is over. Item Link List Item 1 Oral Sedation Compared to laughing gas, medication is a slightly stronger form of sedation. Your child may benefit from oral sedation if we feel that laughing gas may not be enough to calm their nerves. Your child would need to drink the sedative 10-15-minutes prior to their appointment. At times, laughing gas is used in conjunction to an oral sedative. Your child will remain awake and relaxed throughout the procedure but will require a short while to recover, so, it is best to not schedule any activities immediately following a dental procedure that required an oral sedative. As the world advances dental technology and aesthetic design, we see a rising tide of individuals in search of transformative dental solutions. Our dental practice stands at the forefront of this evolution, delivering treatments that represent the pinnacle of full-mouth restoration. All-on-X dental implants are designed to anchor titanium screws into the jawbone to provide you with either a permanent fixed denture or Snap-in Denture. All-on-X uses strategic placement of at least four, but as many as eight, screws per arch to promote stability and precision with either choice. Through dental implant surgery, we aim to rejuvenate smiles by replacing tooth roots with metal posts, granting those with missing or damaged teeth a lifelike, functional replacement. What Are Fixed and Snap-in Dentures? With the rapid advancements in dental care, the All-on-X dental implant system has emerged as a significant breakthrough. The technique offers patients reliable and aesthetically pleasing solutions for tooth replacement. The permanent fixed denture provides a full-mouth restoration using a limited number of implants. It is an efficient solution that ensures patients feel comfortable and confident in their new teeth. On the other hand, Snap-in Dentures offer a blend of the traditional denture's familiarity with the added stability of implants, making them a popular choice for many. For those seeking dental restoration, these options present a balance between functionality and appearance. Patients no longer have to settle but can enjoy a natural-looking smile with all the benefits of modern dental technology. At our dental practice, every treatment, be it fixed dentures or Snap-in Dentures, is meticulously tailored to suit your individual needs, ensuring a natural and lasting result. Here is a closer look at the procedures: Procedure Efficiency: Both the fixed denture and Snap-in Denture procedures prioritize patient comfort. Surgeries are often wrapped up in a single streamlined appointment, facilitated with local anesthesia. Aesthetics and Functionality: Titanium implant screws, foundational to both treatments, are placed with surgical precision, remaining discreetly hidden beneath the gum line. Custom-shaded, gum-colored dentures ensure a natural, seamless appearance. Dental crowns, typically fashioned from acrylic resin, mimic the function and aesthetic of real teeth. The Streamlined Process: Advanced materials, coupled with our team's expertise, pave the way for dental implants that are natural-looking and functional. Whether opting for fixed dentures or Snap-in Dentures, patients can look forward to swift surgeries, quicker recoveries, and the lasting joy of a revitalized smile. What Is Involved With Fixed Dentures and Snap-in Dentures? We recognize that each individual brings a unique story, distinct concerns, and specific aspirations. From the initial consultation to the final reveal, every phase of your journey is treated with the utmost care, attention, and respect. Whether you are leaning towards the comprehensive fixed denture or considering the versatility of Snap-in Dentures, our unwavering commitment shines through. We promise to provide a personalized and transformative dental experience that addresses your specific needs, aligns with your oral health goals, and ensures your comfort and satisfaction every step of the way. Our team is dedicated not just to restoring smiles, but to enhancing the confidence and well-being of those who entrust us with their care. Initial Assessment An in-depth evaluation of your current oral health, jaw anatomy, and bite using visual exams, x-rays, and bone density scans. Consideration of alternative options, especially for those who might not have the bone density required for traditional implants. Comprehensive discussion to ensure the chosen treatment aligns with your aesthetic and functional preferences. Advanced Imaging Utilization of cone beam CT scans to obtain detailed views of the jaw structure. Computer simulations that determine precise implant positions for All-on-X Digital tools ensuring accuracy and enhancing the overall efficiency of the planned procedure. Procedure Our skilled dental team meticulously places titanium implants into the jawbone, following the pre-determined plan. Specific anchor points are established to allow for the secure attachment of the dentures. Depending on the stability and your oral health, temporary crowns or dentures might be attached immediately post-procedure. Outcome The amalgamation of our dentist's expertise, contemporary technology, and comprehensive imaging ensures a tailored treatment fitting for each patient's unique anatomy and aspirations. All-on-X aims to restore function, enhance aesthetics, and boost overall confidence, ensuring patients leave our practice with more than just a smile, but a renewed sense of self. Fillings, crowns (“caps”), bridges, and implants are common restorative procedures. The goal is to bring back your natural smile and prevent future oral health issues. Restorative procedures help patients with keeping their teeth properly aligned, preventing plaque buildup, and boosting their appearance and self-esteem. Dental Crowns A dental crown is a custom-made cover that fits over an original tooth that has either been decayed, damaged, or cracked, and is used to fully cover a portion of tooth that lies above the gumline. Crowns are made from a variety of different materials such as porcelain, gold, acrylic resin, or a mix of these materials. Porcelain generally has the most natural appearance, although it is often less durable. Most crowns nowadays are made with a white-based ceramic, and Zirconia ceramic has been reported to have the highest level of mechanical properties. Zirconia bases can be used with a porcelain outer layer to deliver great esthetic outcomes. The treatment plan for a crown involves: Numbing your tooth to remove any decay Sculpturing your tooth to provide an ideal fit for a dental crown Making an impression of your teeth in order to create a custom-made crown (usually takes 1-2-weeks) Making a temporary crown out of acrylic resin and fitting it onto your affected tooth Applying the custom-made crown by removing the temporary crown After ensuring the crown has the proper look and fit, our dentist cements it into place This process generally consists of 2-3-visits over a 3-4-week period. Once the procedure is completed, proper dental hygiene, including daily brushing and flossing, is required to maintain healthy, bacteria-free teeth, gums, and crowns. This helps in the prevention of gum disease. Given proper care, your crowns can last a lifetime. Dental Bridges A dental bridge is a permanent appliance that replaces a missing tooth or missing teeth, and are an alternative to partial dentures. Dental bridges are made up of several pieces that are fused together to fit into the open space where your tooth or teeth used to be. They serve both practical and aesthetic purposes, enabling you to eat and speak as well as restoring your smile. The bridge itself can be made of several different types of material, including gold, alloys, or porcelain. When replacing a front tooth, porcelain is most often the material of choice because it can be matched to your natural tooth color. The artificial teeth used in dental bridges are called pontics. You will have a pontic for each missing tooth, created to be close in shape and size to the missing one(s). Pontics are anchored to a tooth or teeth next to the gap (called abutment teeth) or to a dental implant. Traditional Fixed Bridge | This is the most common type of bridge. It includes a crown on either side of the pontic(s). Resin-Bonded Bridge | This is often used to replace front teeth. Instead of crowns, it uses porcelain or metal frameworks with "wings" that are bonded to the back of your teeth on either side of the gap. Implant-Supported Bridge | An implant for each missing tooth is surgically embedded into your jawbone, in one procedure. The bridge, which contains the pontics, is placed over them in a later procedure. Cantilever Bridge | When only one side of the gap contains a natural tooth, the pontic(s) are anchored by a single crown on that natural tooth. Book Appointment We are the local dentist near you! They are a conservative approach because they replace missing teeth without affecting or altering adjacent teeth. Dental implants are designed to look, feel, and function like your natural teeth. They offer several advantages, including a natural look and comfortable fit, the confidence to smile, eat, and engage in social activities without worrying, and excellent long-term value. Dental implants stimulate bone growth and prevent teeth from shifting toward the gap, making them an effective tooth replacement solution. If you are missing teeth or having problems with an ill-fitting denture or bridge, dental implants may be the right choice for you. Our dentist will evaluate your specific needs and develop a comprehensive post-implant placement maintenance plan that fosters a favorable prognosis. Dental Implants: The Modern Solution Understanding Dental Implants Dental implants, made of sturdy titanium, are today's answer to missing teeth. They serve as a reliable replacement for bridges, dentures, or partials. Essentially, an implant is a titanium artificial root placed surgically into the jawbone. Once bonded, a replacement tooth is attached, mimicking the appearance and function of natural teeth. Single tooth implants are ideal for replacing one or a few adjacent teeth, enhancing oral health and aesthetics. Their adaptability allows placement anywhere in the mouth. If considering this dental innovation, our dentist can assess its fit for your situation.   Who is Eligible for Dental Implants? Dental implants are a transformative solution for many, but it is essential to determine if they are the right fit for you. Ideal candidates typically exhibit good overall health, maintain gums free from periodontal disease, and possess a jawbone robust enough to anchor the implant securely. The jawbone's integrity is crucial as it serves as the foundation for the implant. If you have experienced bone loss due to prolonged tooth absence or other conditions, causing the jawbone to recede or not develop adequately, hope is not lost. Modern dental techniques, such as bone grafting, can come to the rescue. This procedure involves supplementing the existing bone with graft material, thereby creating a more solid base for the implant. Our dental practice is equipped to assess your specific needs and guide you through the best options tailored for your oral health. Assessment and Planning Before the actual procedure begins, it is essential to ensure that dental implants are the right solution for you. Oral Examination: A comprehensive check of your oral cavity is conducted to assess the health of your gums and the status of any remaining teeth. Diagnostic X-Rays: These are crucial for a detailed view of your jawbone, revealing its density and health, and the positioning of any remaining teeth. Treatment Plan Discussion: Based on the findings, our dentist will craft a bespoke treatment plan. This discussion ensures you are well-informed about every step of the upcoming procedure. Implant Insertion This foundational step is where the magic begins. Local Anesthesia: To ensure a pain-free experience, the area is numbed using local anesthesia. Implant Placement: A small incision is made in the gum to access the jawbone. A specialized drill creates a space for the implant, which is then securely placed. Healing Process: Over the subsequent months, a natural process called osseointegration occurs. The implant fuses with the bone, creating a robust foundation for the replacement tooth. During this period, the gum tissue also undergoes healing. Prosthetic Attachment Once the implant has integrated with the bone, the next phase is initiated. Abutment Placement: This connector is fixed onto the implant, serving as the base for the replacement tooth. Impressions: To ensure a perfect fit, an impression of your mouth is taken. This mold aids in crafting a replacement tooth that aligns seamlessly with your natural teeth. Crown Attachment: The custom-made crown, designed to match your natural teeth, is then affixed to the abutment. Depending on your individual needs, this might necessitate several visits to perfect the fit. Dental Bridges for Multiple Missing Teeth For those with multiple missing teeth, dental implants still offer a viable solution. Fixed Bridge: Instead of individual crowns for each implant, a bridge is used to span the area of missing teeth. This bridge is anchored firmly to dental implants on either side of the gap. Natural Appearance: The bridge is meticulously designed to blend with any remaining natural teeth, restoring both functionality and aesthetics. Post-Procedure Care and Considerations Dental implants, anchored in the jawbone, function and appear much like natural teeth. Regular cleaning, akin to natural teeth care, and periodic check-ups at our dental office ensure their longevity. Our dentist will guide you on the proper cleaning procedure for implants . What You Should Know Cost: Dental implants might have a higher initial cost compared to other tooth replacement options. However, they offer long-term value, often being a one-time cost. Typically, this happens due to the soft tissues colliding in the back of your throat. That collision creates a vibration, snoring. Adults that snore periodically are not alone, estimating that chronic snoring affects 24 percent of women, 40 percent of men, and 10 percent of children. Children might snore due to missing teeth, altering the shape of tissues within their mouth, a contributing factor to blocked airways. Causes of snoring are plentiful, including: Born with a narrow airway Low, thick, soft palate, elongated uvula, or large tonsils Sleeping position Overweight or obese Chronic nasal congestion Alcohol and tobacco use Pregnancy Family history Tiredness or fatigue throughout the day are common consequences of snoring and, when it is quite severe, you might not be receiving sufficient oxygen at night. Feelings of illness or fatigue should be relayed to our office immediately. As you snore, you are breathing with your mouth open, which creates dryness that can generate bad breath, bacteria buildup, tooth decay, infections, and sores. Sleep Apnea Obstructive sleep apnea happens when the upper airway becomes blocked while asleep. As a result, the diaphragm and chest muscles have to work harder to open the airway to pull air into the lungs. Each breath can become extremely shallow, or briefly stop altogether before starting again with a loud gasp, snort, or body jerk. This condition can also lower the flow of oxygen to organs and create uneven heart rhythms. Since there are many other medical conditions that can cause these symptoms, we advise you to speak with us about it at your next dental appointment. Warning signs of obstructive sleep apnea include: Daytime sleepiness or fatigue Headaches in the morning Dry mouth or sore throat in the morning Difficulties concentrating, memory lapses, depression Restlessness during sleep Night sweats Gasping or choking when sleeping High blood pressure Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) Choking or drooling Wetting the bed Attention or behavioral issues at school or work Snoring Breathing that pauses or ceases Abnormal sleeping positions, such as sleeping on hands and knees, or head and neck noticeably bent back Waking up several times in the middle of the night to use the bathroom Anti-Snoring Mouth Pieces Snoring is the sound that projects from our mouth when we are asleep. This occurs when there is resistance in the airway caused by a flap in the back of the throat. Although many believe that snoring occurs from the nose, it actually begins behind the tongue. This is due to our muscles relaxing during sleep. As we sleep, our airway gets smaller, which causes our throat to vibrate due to a lack of space, which is what makes the snoring sound.   Snoring can occur for more serious reasons though, and one such reason is sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is when our breathing takes multiple breaks during the sleep cycle. If your child is suffering from sleep apnea, there is a high chance they snore as well. To stop snoring from occurring, there are snoring devices your child can use. A snoring device brings the jaw forward so the tissues in the throat do not vibrate and press against one another. A snoring mouthpiece helps open the airway, which reduces the resistance and relaxes the muscles. The three most popular snoring mouthpieces are the mandibular advancement device (MAD), tongue stabilizing devices, and snoring chin straps. The mandibular advancement device opens the airway through two pieces that look like retainers. These retainers are attached to ensure your child's mouth stays open for proper airflow. A tongue stabilizing device is used to isolate the tongue by bringing it forward and creating a wide gap between the tongue and throat. This helps ease the vibrations that occur when sleeping. A snoring chin strap is a device that is not used as common due to the discomfort it may cause. This device wraps around the head to keep the mouth from opening; however, it has not been as effective as its counterparts. It is important to note that while every parent wants their child to stop snoring, some methods to stop snoring can only be used after the development stage of your child's jaw has stopped, typically around age 16. Regardless of your child's age though, contact our office if you suspect your child may suffer from snoring or sleep apnea. Book Appointment We are the local dentist near you! Failing Tooth | This typically refers to a tooth that is in the process of deteriorating or experiencing issues such as decay, infection, or has structural damage. The tooth might not necessarily be completely dislodged but has started to severely decay or become loose. Missing Tooth | A missing tooth is where a tooth is entirely absent from its socket. This could be due to various medical and dental conditions, trauma, extraction, or congenital absence, and where the tooth was not immediately replaced. Knocked-Out Tooth | Also known as an avulsed tooth, this occurs when a tooth is completely displaced from its socket due to trauma or injury. This can happen due to accidents, sports injuries, or other forceful impacts to the mouth. In any case, a dislodged or missing tooth can be a serious dental emergency that requires immediate attention. If a tooth has been knocked-out, it is crucial to seek dental care promptly as there might be a chance to save the tooth. Our dentist can provide the appropriate treatment, which might involve reimplanting a knocked-out tooth or using a dental implant, dental bridge, or dentures to replace a missing tooth. The best treatment option for your missing or knocked-out tooth will depend on the severity and the condition of the tooth and surrounding structures. What To Do If You Have A Failing, Missing, or Knocked-Out Tooth The actions to take if you have a failing, missing, or knocked-out tooth can significantly impact your chances of saving the tooth. Here are the steps to take in each scenario: Failing Tooth | If you suspect a tooth is failing due to decay, infection, or structural damage, see our dentist as soon as possible. Be sure to maintain good oral hygiene by gently brushing around the affected tooth, and use mouthwash to keep the area clean. Avoid chewing on the affected side to prevent further issues to the tooth and be sure to follow any specific instructions or recommendations given to you by our dentist. Knocked-Out Tooth | Act quickly. Time is crucial in potentially saving a knocked-out tooth. Retrieve the tooth without touching its root. Rinse the tooth gently in warm water or milk, and avoid removing any attached tissues. If possible, try to reinsert the tooth in its socket and hold it in place by gently biting down on a clean cloth or gauze while you make your way to our office, or to the hospital. If reinsertion is not possible, keep the knocked-out tooth in milk (not water) and seek immediate emergency dental care. In any case of dental emergency involving a failing, missing, or knocked-out tooth, seeking prompt professional dental care is vital. Contact our dentist or visit a hospital emergency room immediately. Failing Dental Implants Dental implant failure refers to a condition where a dental implant does not successfully fulfill its intended function. This failure can occur at different stages, including during the initial healing period after implant placement or even years after the successful integration of the implant. There are two primary categories of dental implant failure: Early Implant Failure | This occurs within a few months after the implant placement and before the implant has fully integrated with the jawbone (osseointegration). Causes of early failure may include inadequate bone integration, infection, implant mobility, or implant fracture. Late Implant Failure | This occurs months or years after successful implantation and osseointegration. Late failure may result from a variety of factors, such as peri-implantitis (inflammation around the implant), bone loss around the implant site, mechanical issues such as abutment or prosthetic complications, or even systemic health issues such as diabetes or autoimmune diseases. Several other factors contribute to implant failure, including poor oral hygiene leading to infections or gum diseases around the implant area, insufficient bone density or quality at the implant site, improperly placed implants, excessive biting forces or parafunctional habits (teeth grinding), smoking, and certain systemic health conditions that can compromise healing and bone integration. Symptoms of dental implant failure may include pain, swelling, mobility of the implant, discomfort while chewing, gum recession around the implant, or visible signs of infection. Addressing implant failure often involves a comprehensive assessment by a dental professional. Treatment may range from non-surgical interventions such as antibiotics, professional cleaning, or adjustments, to more invasive procedures such as implant removal, bone grafting, or replacing the failed implant. Preventive measures including regular dental check-ups, proper oral hygiene, following post-implant care instructions, and lifestyle modifications, play a crucial role in minimizing the risk of implant failure and ensuring their long-term success. However, there are spaces in our mouths that are difficult to clean on our own, which is why we all need to have our teeth professionally cleaned every few months by a dental hygienist. As your local dental practice, our job is to keep our patients oral health in check. We do this by providing our patients with an oral exam and thorough cleaning of their mouth. A dental cleaning involves the removal of plaque, polishing, and instructing on proper oral care from home. To break it down further, a dental cleaning helps remove excess plaque from hard-to-reach places in our mouths. Plaque is a mostly invisible sticky film of bacteria that forms on our teeth when we eat and drink. The bacteria in plaque acts as an acid that can decay tooth enamel and cause cavities. If left untreated, plaque turns to tartar, and tartar can form a shield overtop of our gums that can cause inflammation, which can cause bleeding and the gumline to be pushed down, which in turn causes tooth sensitivity and even tooth and bone loss. We understand that there are patients who do not wish to come into the office, for one reason or another. Typically, patients tend to skip dental visits due to anxiety, dental pain, income, or the lack of dental insurance. These are all valid reasons that our dentist can address with you on your next visit as it is even more important to care for your health, which includes your oral health. Please call our office if you have certain care requirements. Tooth Desensitization and Fluoride Treatment If a taste of ice cream or a sip of hot coffee is sometimes a painful experience for you, then you most likely suffer from sensitive teeth. Dental sensitivity is very common amongst adults and there are many reasons why teeth become sensitive. Most often, it is due to root exposure. We offer treatment to decrease that sensitivity with minimal to no discomfort by applying a fluoride gel or other desensitizing agent to your teeth. This process is simple and can have long-lasting affects on the strength of your enamel and the transmission of painful sensations to the nerves of your teeth. Usually, tooth sensitivity occurs because of bone loss, vigorous brushing, clenching/grinding of teeth, acid wear on teeth, smoking, periodontal surgery, cancer treatment, and dry mouth. Fluoride is used to help prevent tooth decay and is usually recommended for children up to 18-years old but is determined by your oral health. Fluoride treatment helps if you have a history of tooth decay or sensitivity around your teeth and gums, and also helps by strengthening the enamel on your teeth. Understanding the causes, symptoms, and potential treatments for these issues is essential for managing discomfort and preventing further dental complications. A toothache typically involves localized pain around a tooth, often stemming from dental decay, gum disease, abscesses, fractures, or tooth grinding. Tooth sensitivity refers to discomfort caused by specific stimuli such as extreme temperatures, sweet and acidic foods, or air. Receding gums, decay, or cracked teeth often result in heightened sensitivity. Dental treatments such as fillings, root canals, or gum treatments tackle underlying issues causing toothaches and sensitivity. Desensitizing toothpaste, fluoride applications, and regular dental check-ups can help manage the discomfort. Consulting our dentist is crucial for an accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment plan. What Is A Toothache? A toothache refers to pain experienced around a tooth or within the oral cavity. Several factors contribute to toothaches: Dental Decay (Cavities) | Dental decay, caused by bacterial activity in the mouth, is one of the primary reasons for toothaches. Bacteria generate acids that gradually erode tooth enamel, creating cavities. As decay progresses and reaches the inner layers of a tooth, it exposes nerve endings, resulting in sensitivity and pain. Gum Disease | Infections and inflammation affecting the gums can cause discomfort and pain. Gingivitis, an early stage of gum disease characterized by swollen and bleeding gums, can progress to periodontitis, causing pain around the affected teeth and potential tooth loss if left untreated. Tooth Abscess | An abscess is a collection of pus caused by a bacterial infection. It can develop at the root of a tooth or between the tooth and gum tissue. This condition is often associated with severe, throbbing pain and requires immediate dental attention to prevent further complications. Tooth Trauma | Accidents, injuries, or biting down on hard objects can result in a cracked or damaged tooth, leading to acute pain and discomfort. Fractured teeth can expose sensitive areas, causing sensitivity to temperature changes and pressure. Bruxism (Teeth Grinding) | Grinding or clenching teeth, often involuntarily during sleep, can cause toothaches and jaw pain. Over time, bruxism can wear down tooth enamel, leading to increased sensitivity and pain. What Causes Sensitive Teeth? Having sensitive teeth causes discomfort or pain in response to certain triggers, such as hot or cold temperatures, sweet or acidic foods, or even breathing cold air. Common causes of sensitive teeth include: Exposed Tooth Roots | Receding gums due to age, gum disease, or aggressive brushing habits can expose tooth roots. Unlike enamel, the roots are composed of dentin, a softer tissue containing microscopic tubules that connect to the nerves, leading to sensitivity when exposed. Enamel Erosion | Acidic foods and beverages, gastrointestinal reflux, or excessive consumption of acidic substances can gradually wear down tooth enamel. This exposes the dentin layer, leading to increased sensitivity. Tooth Decay or Cavities | When dental decay progresses and affects the dentin, it can cause sensitivity and discomfort, especially when consuming hot, cold, or sweet foods and beverages. Dental Procedures | Some dental treatments such as professional cleanings, fillings, or teeth whitening procedures might cause temporary sensitivity. However, this usually resolves shortly after the procedure. Cracked Teeth | Fractured or cracked teeth can expose the sensitive inner layers, leading to increased sensitivity and discomfort when exposed to various stimuli. Treatments Available For Toothaches and Sensitive Teeth The treatment for toothaches and sensitive teeth depends on the underlying cause and may include dental fillings for cavities, root canal therapy for infections, or periodontal treatments for gum disease. Before these issues have a chance to develop, we recommend our patients to take proper precaution to ensure their oral health remains intact. Using specialized toothpaste containing compounds such as potassium nitrate or fluoride can help reduce sensitivity over time. Additionally, in-office fluoride treatments may strengthen enamel and decrease tooth sensitivity. Adopting good oral hygiene practices, such as using a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoiding acidic or sugary foods, can help prevent enamel erosion and subsequent sensitivity. For patients who suffer from bruxism, wearing a custom mouth guard while sleeping can protect teeth from grinding and alleviate associated pain. Toothaches and sensitive teeth can significantly impact your quality of life. Seeking professional dental care, maintaining good oral hygiene habits, and addressing underlying issues promptly are crucial steps in managing and preventing these conditions. Regular dental check-ups and early intervention can prevent minor issues from escalating into something more severe. If your teeth are overly sensitive, or if you are experiencing a sharp pain in your tooth, you should contact our office as soon as possible. We offer same-day appointments for dental emergencies. Most patients think that there is something seriously wrong with them, or that they are going to be undergoing a dangerous, painful, and expensive procedure. The truth is, however, that many oral surgery procedures are commonplace and address conditions that many patients of all ages experience, such as impacted wisdom teeth, sleep apnea, or tooth loss. While every case is different, many of these procedures are completed on an outpatient basis, and patients can resume work and normal activities within a few days. It is also true that many dentists recommend that you see an oral surgeon because in some cases, the surgeon may advise us that there are other, nonsurgical, treatments available. If you are apprehensive about a referral to an oral surgeon, speak with us at your next dentist appointment. List of Services Dental Implants Dental implants have changed the way dentistry has evolved over the last 25-years. A dental implant is a replacement for the root of a tooth. They are used to secure crowns to the jawbone using titanium and titanium alloy. These metals are used because they are lightweight and biocompatible – which means they are not rejected by our bodies. Dental implants are used to replace teeth that have been affected by decay, disease, oral cancer, or a number of causes such as smoking, alcoholism, or injury. Dental implants require a procedure to create channels in the jawbone so the implants can be fitted with intimate contact with the jaw. Implants generally require 3-6-months for the bone to fuse with the titanium rod before we can place a tooth restoration (a crown or bridge), to complete the process. Item Link Wisdom Tooth Extraction A wisdom tooth extraction is the removal of wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth are our last teeth to erupt and are located in the back bottom and top corners of our mouths. They usually come in between the ages of 16-21 and while some patients may not have any issues with them, it is better to have them removed as there are typically more issues leaving them in. These issues could include a lack of room for them to properly erupt, they can become impacted and cause pain, oral infections, or other oral health issues. Oftentimes, our office will suggest wisdom tooth removal as a preventive measure. A wisdom tooth extraction is an outpatient procedure that only takes a few days to fully recover form. Item Link Reconstructive Accidents happen due to sports injuries, falls, work-related incidents, or any kind of trauma, and when it involves our face, it can be frightening and stressful. That is why you should book an appointment with us so we can determine the best course of action. Dental surgery for facial reconstruction breaks down into two categories – soft tissue injuries and fractures. Soft tissue injuries include trauma to the skin or gums, such as cuts on the inside of the cheek, lips, or tongue. Soft tissue injuries also include lacerations on the soft or hard palate. Fractures relate to the tiny bone tissue in our mouths, and includes reconstruction to the jawbone and teeth. Larger reconstructive surgeries go into the nasal cavities and the forehead, if the facial injuries are severe enough. In some cases, reconstructive surgery utilizes dental implants along with other methods of treatment and mechanics to repair jaw alignments and bone structure. Item Link Orthodontics Surgical orthodontics treats complex orthodontic cases that involve the skull, face, mouth, and jaw. To be an ideal candidate for surgical orthodontics, your jaw needs to be finished growing. When the jaw stops growing, usually between ages 16-18, braces alone may not be able to properly align all aspects of your bite. Surgery may be required to attain the perfect smile you have always wanted. Receiving surgery varies from patient to patient. Most patients usually start with wearing braces to align their teeth. Once aligned, surgery can be scheduled. You will need to continue wearing your braces for 6-12-months after surgery to make any last-minute adjustments to your smile. Surgery is usually done in a hospital and can take several hours. Depending on your surgery and the complexity of your case, the recovery times vary. Recovery could be as little as 2-3-weeks, to as much as 12-months, or longer. Being able to look in the mirror and smile, genuinely, at the way you feel about yourself, is one of the biggest and best benefits to orthodontic surgery. There is no better feeling than having the surgery, getting your braces off, and going through the recovery. The way you will feel post-surgery is worth the wait. But why wait? Contact us today to see if you are an ideal candidate for surgical orthodontics. Item Link Book Appointment We are the local dentist near you! Essentially, dental implants replace teeth roots and dental crowns, dental bridges, or dentures are attached to the implants through a connector piece known as an abutment. Cleaning implant-supported tooth replacements is just as important as cleaning natural teeth, as both depend on healthy surrounding tissues for support. Plaque collects on implant crowns just as it does on natural teeth and must be removed daily at home with proper flossing and brushing. Without daily care, an infection may develop known as peri-implantitis which can result in the loss of the implant. Unlike inflammation around teeth, this reaction can be quite catastrophic, quickly leading to a loss of bone around the affected implant which can rapidly progress to the loss of the implant itself. Our dental hygiene team has an important role to play in keeping dental implants infection-free, and there are many factors to be considered in selecting the right instruments for a professional cleaning. In order to choose the most effective dental instruments possible, we must perform an oral exam to better understand the nature of the debris, the location of the deposits, the type of surface on which the debris accumulates, and the stubbornness with which they adhere. Our team must select instruments for cleaning that will not impact the crown, bridge, denture, abutment, or the implant itself. Maintaining the highly polished, smooth surface of the abutment and attachment are critical. If they are scratched, they can attract and harbor bacteria. That is why the instruments used are most often made of plastics and resins. Natural teeth do not scratch in the same way, and therefore metal instruments can be used to clean them. If any part of the implant body itself is visible, this may mean there is infection that has resulted in gum and/or bone loss. The implant surface becomes exposed following loss of its fusion to the bone. Implant surfaces are generally microscopically “roughened” to increase surface area for bone attachment. But this surface roughness makes implants difficult to clean and disinfect. Additionally, some implants are screw-shaped, and their threads add to the cleaning dilemma. Despite these special cleaning challenges, implants are highly successful. In fact, studies indicate long-term success rates are well over 95%. However, the prevention of peri-implantitis is fundamental to implant health, maintenance, and function. And cleaning implants and their related components is an important part of their success. Most children begin sucking their thumb or fingers from a young age, with many even beginning inside the womb. Roughly 75%-95% of infants suck their thumbs, so chances are, there is a former thumb sucker in your family. Unfortunately, excessive thumb-sucking or finger-sucking can severely impact your child’s health, so it is important to watch for signs. List of Services What Signs Should I Watch For? Sucking is a natural reflex for an infant, and it serves an important purpose: providing a sense of security and contentment. It can also be relaxing, which is why children suck their fingers while falling asleep. According to the Dental Association, most children stop sucking on their own by age 2. They simply grow out of a habit that is no longer useful to them. However, some children continue beyond preschool years. If your child is still sucking on their fingers when their permanent teeth start to erupt, it may be time to take action to break the habit. Item Link List Item 1 What Are The Consequences Of Thumb Sucking If the sucking is passive (thumb or finger gently resting inside their mouth), oral health issues are unlikely. Aggressive sucking, however (placing pressure on their mouth or teeth), may cause issues with tooth alignment and mouth growth. Extended sucking affects both their teeth and shape of their face, leading to issues such as improper bites, crooked teeth, or misaligned teeth and jaw. Item Link How Can I Help My Child Quit Pacifier Use and Thumb Sucking? Be supportive and positive! Instead of punishing your child for aggressive sucking, give praise when they don’t. Punishing them for the activity is likely to create resentment, and a lack of trust in your judgment. Explain clearly what may happen to their teeth if they keep sucking and support their attempts to stop. If you notice your child sucking when they are anxious, help them reduce their anxiety. In that situation, sucking on their fingers is a symptom of a larger problem, so the larger problem should be addressed first to ensure it does not spiral into worse symptoms. You can try putting a band-aid on your child’s thumb or fingers, or a sock over their hand at night. Let them know that this is not a punishment, but rather, a way to help them remember to avoid the behavior. You can also try taking note of what times your child tends to suck their thumb and create diversions during those times. As always, use your best judgment. If you suspect your child’s finger sucking is affecting their oral health, give us a call. Item Link List of Services Book Appointment We are the local dentist near you! We are dedicated to helping our patients find a solution for their needs, regardless of the state of their oral health. A full mouth reconstruction is a personalized treatment plan that combines several procedures to restore your oral health and function. The process may include procedures such as dental implants, crowns, and orthodontics. Our team is passionate about working with you to improve your smile, bite, and quality of life. A full mouth reconstruction is focused first and foremost on your oral health. Once your main oral concerns are addressed, we can provide cosmetic procedures to help improve the appearance of your smile, including porcelain veneers or teeth whitening. Full mouth reconstruction is typically recommended for patients with: missing teeth, substantial decay, excessive wear, chipped or cracked teeth, periodontitis, or severe misalignment. Full mouth reconstruction can also help treat bruxism (teeth grinding) and temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). During your consultation, we create a personalized treatment plan to help improve your smile. Addressing fundamental dental issues offers three key benefits:  Recovered Oral Health | By succinctly treating concerns such as gum disease, decay, or tooth issues, your oral health can be significantly improved in a short period of time. This will not only enhance your day-to-day life, but it benefits you in the future as well. Undergoing a full mouth reconstruction can significantly reduce your need for future dental procedures. Improved Function | Missing or broken teeth can make it difficult to chew, causing you to rely on one side of your mouth, or to eliminate certain foods from your diet altogether. These issues can also affect enunciation, preventing you from speaking clearly. By restoring affected teeth, these functions can be alleviated. Increased Self-Confidence | By fixing broken, chipped, and cracked teeth, the appearance of your smile will improve. When restoring compromised teeth, we use high-quality, natural-looking prosthetics for outstanding results.  Your oral health is our priority. When planning your full mouth reconstruction, we make recommendations based on the information gathered during your consultation. Once we have established your oral health concerns that need to be addressed, we provide you with a treatment plan tailored to your needs, budget, and goals. With a focus on biological dentistry, we only recommend procedures we feel are in your best interests for your overall health. Feeling comfortable and confident in your smile will undoubtedly have a positive impact on your life. Typically, patients can expect this process to take several months. However, the timeline for your treatment plan may take longer depending on your specific oral concerns and the procedures needing to be performed, which may include: dental implants, root canal therapy, gum rejuvenation, orthodontics, periodontal care, dental crowns, or a variety of cosmetic procedures. You will typically return for two follow-up appointments that will occur one week and one month after your procedures are complete. This way, we can ensure everything looks and functions as it should. Book Appointment We are the local dentist near you! We believe that it is important to provide all our patients with the care they need to feel confident when they smile. We achieve this by offering diverse denture options with great denture care. During all stages, you can rest assured that our practice will give you the best possible outcome. Complete Dentures Complete dentures are required when a patient needs a top, bottom, or full set of teeth. This is the most common procedure for dentures as they have years of successful history, which has only advanced due to modern technology. The process to receive complete dentures can be lengthy as it requires at least four appointments. After the fourth appointment, there is an adjustment period for patients due to their gums acclimating to their new dentures. Immediate Dentures For those who may be unfamiliar with dentures, immediate dentures are needed for more serious cases of dental extractions. They are dentures that are immediately inserted into a patient’s mouth after having all their teeth extracted. A mold of their teeth is taken prior to the extraction(s), which allows for their dentures to be made to fit seamlessly, and quickly. We understand that the thought of having missing teeth can be worrisome, so immediate dentures are an effective solution. Partial Dentures A partial denture is a removable denture that helps support your surrounding teeth when there is a missing tooth. It also helps prevent tooth loss, rotation, and shifting that could occur if the gap is left open. Partial dentures tend to be made from an acrylic or metal composition which allows the partial denture to resemble the surrounding teeth, giving it an aesthetically pleasing and comfortable look. A partial denture can be made within one day, making it extremely efficient. Denture Relines A denture reline is required if your dentures start to fit incorrectly and feel uncomfortable in your mouth. This may happen due to multiple natural factors, such as: tooth loss, weight loss, or illness. We recommend that you have your dentures relined every two years to ensure they properly fit your mouth. If you wear improper dentures, it can cause irritation and inflammation which can progress to other more serious oral concerns. Denture Repairs We understand that accidents may happen with dentures, which is why we make it easy to get your dentures repaired at our practice. Dentures may become worn over time, tear, or break; but they can be repaired without the need of a full replacement. However, if you have a denture that is broken, it is crucial to have it fixed immediately by a professional. You could end up injuring your gums and worsening your dentures the longer you wait. Denture Rebases Caring for your dentures is an important task to ensure that they do not become ill-fitting. Some patients do not realize when they soak their dentures in harmful solutions, it may cause their dentures to become warped or brittle. A denture rebase is performed to fix any cracks or misalignments that have occurred, but does not impact the teeth portion of the denture. This means that the rebase will be completed to the pink acrylic portion of the denture only. Denture Implants Over time, our jaw bones slowly shrink due to age, smoking, and illnesses and because of this, your dentures may not fit properly anymore. Denture implants are a combination of dental implants and dentures. Titanium rods are implanted into the jawbone, replacing your tooth roots, which increases the stability of the denture. These rods need to be implanted into the jaw before your dentures are made, to ensure everything fits properly. Denture implants can be permanent or removeable. So, what do you need to know about taking care of your child's teeth? Let's start at the beginning. Baby teeth begin erupting between 6-12-months, and continue until your child is 2.5-3-years old. Throughout this period, their gums may feel tender and sore as a result of the physical pressure that new teeth create while erupting. You can soothe their gums by rubbing them with a clean finger or with a cool or wet cloth. Teething rings may also help with gum soreness. As your child gets older, their baby teeth will begin falling out, typically starting at age 6. Teething Child All twenty primary (or baby) teeth should be in by the time your child is 2-3-years old. Having a teething child can be stressful, especially if your child is in pain from their teeth coming in. It does not have to be a painful experience though. According to the Dental Association, some methods to make the teething process easier, include rubbing your child’s gums with a clean finger, damp cloth, or with the back of a small, cool spoon. If these methods do not work, our dentist, or your child’s family doctor can recommend a mild over-the-counter medication to relieve the pain. Small children and babies are likely to chew anything they can get their hands on; walls, seatbelts, table edges, etc. Try to ensure your child stays away from materials that are hard enough to break their teeth or make their gums bleed. It is also important to avoid certain methods while handling a teething child; do not use a liquid painkiller that can be rubbed on your toddler’s gums – your child could ingest some of it; avoid teething biscuits, since many teething biscuits have added sugar or contain hidden sugars; do not dismiss a fever! Fevers are not part of the teething process and if your child has a fever, it is likely not related to their new teeth – you should take your child to their doctor. First Dental Visit The common question all new parents have “ At what age should my little one be seen by the dentist? ” It is recommended by the Dental Association to assess your child within 6-months of the eruption of their first tooth, or by age 1 for their first dental visit. Even if your child cannot sit still in the chair, we like to familiarize children early on with the office environment and get them as comfortable as possible. Children who see a dentist from an early age are less likely to fear the dentist later in life. Preventative screenings may be all that is required at such an early age; however, at this time, our team is able to help counsel parents on feeding methods and thumb and finger habits that will help build healthy hygiene habits. To get your child ready for their first visit, we suggest allowing your child to attend a hygiene visit with a parent or sibling to become familiar with the office and team. It is also helpful to encourage regular tooth care at home. Toothpaste and Toothbrush For young toddlers, brushing with a toothbrush and water is usually sufficient. Non-fluoridated toothpaste can be used but you should always encourage your child to spit it out to help build proper oral habits. Start brushing with a rice grain-sized amount of toothpaste and be sure to watch for any discolouration of their teeth. Until your child can completely spit all the toothpaste, fluoridated toothpaste should not be used. An overconsumption of fluoride toothpaste may cause dental fluorosis of their adult teeth. Dental fluorosis is when the enamel does not properly form and appears with bright white and brown pitted stains. Dental enamel affected by dental fluorosis does not form as strong as it normally should and is therefore prone to cavities.   For infants, a damp or wet cloth is more than enough to clear their gums until their first tooth beings erupting. Once that happens, switch to a finger-brush. A finger-brush is a light fitted rubber holster for your finger which has a gentle scrub to keep your child’s teeth clean. Since an infants diet primarily consists of milk and mashed vegetables, aggressive brushing should be avoided. Once your child begins developing more teeth, switch to a handheld soft-bristle toothbrush. Have your child try brushing your teeth to practice how teeth should be cleaned and try to brush at the same time as your child as they pick up on what you are doing and mimic your movements. Some parents have had success with a counting game when brushing, while others sing songs or play music to encourage a good amount of time to brush. Children’s Dental Care As parents, we are so concerned with the overall health of our children that we tend to overlook what we deem to be the little things. The health of our teeth is extremely important, especially for children. Children are not immune to dental and oral health issues simply because they are young. Children can have dental and oral health issues if they are not educated enough on proper oral care, or if no preventative measures are taken during their youth. Proper oral care from home helps keep any potentially harmful oral diseases at bay and provides our dental team with the advantage of treating those issues in their early stages. Here are a few tips to develop a constructive at home oral health care routine. List of Services Floss Flossing removes plaque from the areas between your teeth that your toothbrush cannot reach. If that plaque remains, it often leads to tooth decay and gum disease. Be certain that you floss at least twice per day because a toothbrush, on its own, will only achieve so much for your oral hygiene and health. It is also important to floss after eating any meal or snack to ensure you remove any food particles between your teeth before they have a chance to develop into a more serious oral health condition. Item Link Fluoride Toothpaste Fluoride is successful at preventing cavities and repairing tooth enamel, a fact that has consistently been solidified by scientific research. A naturally occurring element, fluoride is completely safe when it is properly utilized. Parents are urged to only use a smear of toothpaste on a toothbrush for babies and children younger than the age of three, and a pea-sized dab for children ages three to six. Item Link Toothbrush and Brushing A soft-bristled toothbrush, with a head that is small enough to comfortably reach all your teeth, is recommended. With it, you will get a thorough cleaning and avoid the abrasion that often comes with a medium or hard-bristled toothbrush. You should also change your toothbrush when the bristles begin wear down or soften, which is generally after three months of use. Gently brush at a 45-degree angle against the gumline with a short, circular motion. Brushing too frequently, or with excess force, can cause gum recession and harm the root surfaces of your teeth, abrading them in the process. Your roots, when exposed, are at a greater risk of decay and might become quite sensitive to hot and cold temperatures. These surfaces are not covered by ultra-hard enamel that protects the crown of your teeth above the gumline, so they tend to wear faster. Brush moderately twice per day for about two minutes on each occasion since it does not require too much effort to remove trapped food particles and bacteria plaque. Item Link List Item 1 Mouthwash Mouthwash, when used daily and for the advised amount of time that is printed on the bottle, can greatly reduce plaque and gingivitis. A mouthwash with alcohol might cause irritation, but you can always switch to one without it. Item Link Drink Water A moist mouth is crucial for all patients since mouth dryness increases plaque accumulation and your risk of both tooth decay and gum disease. Tobacco products, alcohol, caffeine, and certain over-the-counter prescription medications help contribute to mouth dryness. Drinking water is important because it keeps you hydrated and provides several health benefits for your body. Within your mouth, it keeps sensitive areas moist and stimulates the healthy movement of saliva. Your saliva buffers acids, helps digestion, assists the mouth in thwarting germs, and safeguards your teeth from decay. Item Link Avoid Sugary Snacking and Acidic Beverages Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease of both children and adults, despite being almost completely preventable. Sugars are consumed by oral bacteria and then release acids that attack our teeth, producing tooth decay and cavities. Consuming less sugar is beneficial for your teeth, but, if you cannot eliminate these snacks from your diet altogether, limit them to mealtimes a couple days a week. This allows your saliva an opportunity to better neutralize and diminish the acids when consumed. Acids soften the hard enamel that covers your teeth by dissolving the outer layers, giving your teeth a gritty feel. Soda, sports drinks, and juices dissolve calcium out of the surface enamel through a process known as de-mineralization. Because saliva is rich in minerals, it has a natural neutralizing and buffering capability that will re-mineralize enamel surfaces impacted by acid. This is why it is important to steer clear of these drinks, and instead drink plenty of water. Item Link Understand Poor Oral Health Habits Aside from sugar intake, there are a few other detrimental oral health habits that you should be aware of, including the use of tobacco products, consuming excessive amounts of alcohol, and chewing on your fingernails, pencils, pens, or bottle caps. Understanding the effects of these tendencies, all of which have negative ramifications on your overall oral health, will assist you in avoiding them. Another example is an oral piercing, as it increases your chances of experiencing gum pain or a chipped tooth. A clenching or grinding habit can also harm your teeth, jaw joints, and muscles, particularly during your sleep. Item Link Book Appointment We are the local dentist near you! These dental imperfections often result from various factors, including injuries, teeth grinding, and chewing hard objects. The severity can vary, ranging from minor superficial cracks to significant chips affecting the tooth's structure. Cracks on teeth can be as diverse as the teeth they appear on. They can run long or short, deep or shallow, and can be located on any part of the tooth, from the visible crown to the hidden roots. Some cracks are so small that they are barely noticeable, causing no pain or sensitivity. However, others can be deep enough to reach the nerve, leading to significant discomfort and potential complications. Initially, chipped teeth might seem inconsequential, but they can lead to heightened sensitivity, pain while chewing, or even sharp edges that may irritate your tongue or cheeks. If cracks or chips are left untreated they can deepen and expose the inner layers of a tooth, making your tooth susceptible to decay or infection. Seeking dental care promptly is crucial when dealing with cracked or chipped teeth. Minor chips may require dental bonding to restore the tooth's appearance and function while more substantial cracks would require a dental crown to cover and protect the tooth. In cases where cracks extend into the tooth's root or pulp, a root canal may be necessary to save the tooth. Prevention is key in avoiding cracked or chipped teeth. Using a mouthguard during sports and avoiding chewing hard objects such as ice or un-popped popcorn kernels can significantly reduce the risk. Ignoring cracked or chipped teeth can lead to more severe complications, impacting your dental health and overall well-being. Swift action upon noticing any crack or chip is crucial in preserving a healthy, confident smile. When Should You See Our Dentist? It is advisable to see our dentist promptly if you suspect you have a cracked or chipped tooth. Even seemingly minor cracks and chips can lead to significant issues if left untreated. Immediate dental attention can prevent further complications and preserve your oral health. Any signs of dental injury, such as sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, pain while chewing, a jagged edge on a tooth, or discomfort in the affected area, warrant a visit to our dentist. We will assess the extent of the injury through a visual examination, X-rays, or other diagnostic tools to determine the best course of action. Even if you are not experiencing pain, scheduling a dental check-up is crucial, as early detection can prevent minor issues from escalating into more severe issue as not all cracks are noticeable to the naked eye. Delaying treatment can exacerbate the issue and progress the crack or chip into a more extensive procedure, such as a dental crown, root canal, or extraction. Regular dental check-ups, ideally every 4-6-months, are essential for early detection. However, if you notice any sudden change in your teeth, a sharp pain, a jagged tooth, or any other form of discomfort, it is recommended to schedule an appointment promptly, as early intervention can significantly impact the success and ease of treatment for cracked and chipped teeth. Modern techniques in dentistry help patients with stained, discolored, chipped, worn, broken, misshapen, and misaligned teeth, in addition to gaps between them. As dentists are well-equipped with a great selection of tools and techniques, they can refine your smile significantly and give your appearance a wonderful makeover. These procedures are now quicker and more effective. Although most cosmetic procedures are non-essential, they do offer a multitude of benefits, such as making regular cleanings simpler, boosting your confidence, and reducing teeth grinding. Overall, you can vastly improve your quality of life, since a healthy smile is vital to all aspects of daily encounters, such as workplace conversations and social gatherings with friends or family. Smiling becomes easier when you do not have to worry about crooked, stained, or chipped teeth. Also, in nearly every case, a patient's tooth gap or receding gumline can be fixed through cosmetic dentistry. To develop a treatment plan, our dentist will discuss the options with you, determining what is suitable for your circumstances. Before deciding to undergo any cosmetic procedure, we carefully and thoroughly set proper expectations associated with your treatment plan, including the benefits, risks, and costs. Opalescence Teeth Whitening Take-Home Kits Teeth whitening is one of the most sought-after dental procedures because of the fascination of having a brighter and whiter smile. The process involves taking an impression of your teeth to make a custom whitening tray that fits your mouth perfectly. Once your take-home trays are ready to use, you take them home, along with the whitening gel we provide. Simply apply the whitening gel in your trays for an average of 30-minutes each day for 5-7-days. It is important to note that some patients may experience tooth sensitivity during the whitening process. This is sometimes due to the whitening agent that has penetrated the enamel to help remove stains on your teeth. This process can cause some patients to experience mild discomfort. However, this discomfort is temporary and will subside within 24-48-hours. It is also important to note that while every patient wants to have the brightest and whitest smile possible, not every patient is able to achieve these results. This is due to genetics, current stains, oral health, medications, tobacco, and a number of other factors that influence the brightness of our smiles. Some patients may also have permanently stained teeth, such as yellow or brown, and the teeth whitening procedure can only do so much. So, while we all want the brightest and whitest smiles, we want to ensure our patients expectations are properly met. We can cover all these details, and more, when you come in for your next dental appointment. Dental Veneers These thin porcelain shells are used to cover imperfections and enhance your smile. In some cases of minor misalignment, porcelain veneers are used to create the appearance of a straighter smile. In addition to traditional veneers, there are also Lumineers, which may be an option for patients who require minimal alteration to their tooth's surface. Depending on your cosmetic concerns, you may need anywhere from 6-10 veneers or more. Veneers are often combined with other restorative procedures such as porcelain crowns and dental bonding on adjacent teeth. Why Porcelain Veneers? | If you have crooked teeth or spacing issues that affect your smile, you may think braces are your only option. However, there are other procedures worth considering than just traditional orthodontics, such as porcelain veneers. Numerous patients have used porcelain veneers to improve the alignment and symmetry of their smiles. How Porcelain Veneers Work? | Porcelain veneers are thin shells that are affixed to the front portions of your teeth. When a porcelain veneer is in place, it masks cosmetic imperfections. Since porcelain veneers are semi-translucent, they blend in seamlessly with the structure and color of your natural teeth. When your friends and family are up close, they will not be able to tell that a porcelain veneer has even been placed. Once porcelain veneers are on, the results are immediate. The aesthetic benefits are clear once you look in the mirror and smile. Dental Bonding Often, bonding is used to improve the appearance of your teeth and enhance your smile. Composite material, either a plastic or resin, is bonded to an existing tooth, and comes in a variety of colors to match the natural look of your teeth. Unlike veneers or crowns, bonding removes little, if any, of your original tooth. Dental bonding is a common solution for fixing or repairing chipped or cracked teeth, reducing unsightly gaps or spaces between your teeth, as well as for hiding discoloration or faded areas on a tooth's surface. Aesthetic contouring is also a common use for dental bonding and refers to a procedure in which our dentist can reshape your teeth by sculpting their sides. This procedure can correct cracked, chipped, crooked, or misaligned teeth. Instead of braces, crowns, or veneers, you can choose to have aesthetic contouring to change the shape and look of your teeth to enhance your smile. Cavities are caused by oral bacteria, sugary diets, and inadequate oral hygiene. A comprehensive treatment plan is pivotal for sustaining oral wellness. Our dental practice is committed to aiding patients in crafting effective oral health routines to ensure their mouths are clear of cavities and other oral health issues. By understanding the origins of cavities and implementing proper oral hygiene habits, patients can significantly reduce their risk of dental decay. Our goal is to empower patients with the knowledge and guidance needed to proactively maintain good oral health and prevent potential oral health issues. Causes of Cavities and Dental Decay Cavities are the result of a combination of factors primarily influenced by oral hygiene, dietary habits, and bacterial activity within the mouth. Understanding these contributing causes is fundamental in preventing cavity formation and maintaining good oral health. One of the causes of cavities is bacteria. The human mouth hosts numerous types of bacteria, some of which form a sticky biofilm called plaque, which forms on tooth surfaces. These bacteria thrive on sugars and carbohydrates from food remnants left in the mouth after eating. As bacteria feed on these sugars, they produce acids that can erode the protective enamel layer of teeth, leading to cavity formation. Diet is the next most common cause in cavity development. Frequent consumption of sugary or acidic foods and beverages heightens the risk. Sugary treats, sodas, candies, and even natural sugars found in fruits can feed the bacteria in our mouth, promoting acid production and enamel erosion. Acidic foods and drinks can directly weaken enamel, making teeth more susceptible to decay. Inadequate oral hygiene practices significantly contribute to cavities. Poor flossing and brushing habits allow plaque to accumulate on your teeth, providing a breeding ground for harmful bacteria. When plaque is not regularly removed, it hardens into tartar, increasing the risk of decay and gum disease. Conditions that lead to reduced saliva production, such as certain medications, medical treatments, or health issues, can contribute to cavity formation. Saliva plays a crucial role in neutralizing acids in the mouth and aiding in the remineralization of enamel. Reduced saliva flow diminishes the mouth's natural defense mechanism against cavities. Overall, a combination of factors including bacterial presence, dietary choices high in sugars and acids, inadequate oral hygiene, and reduced saliva flow collectively contribute to the development of cavities. Preventive measures targeting these causes are pivotal in maintaining optimal oral health and preventing dental decay. Regular flossing, brushing, a balanced diet, and routine dental check-ups are essential in preventing cavities and preserving a healthy smile. Types and Symptoms of Dental Cavities Cavities and dental decay can exhibit various symptoms, often indicating different stages of progression. Recognizing these signs is crucial in seeking timely dental care to prevent further deterioration. Common symptoms associated with cavities and dental decay include toothaches, tooth sensitivity, visible holes or pits, visible discoloration, pain while chewing, halitosis (bad breath), or pus around the tooth. Recognizing these symptoms and promptly seeking professional dental care can help prevent further tooth decay, alleviate discomfort, and preserve dental health. Regular dental check-ups play a crucial role in detecting cavities in their early stages when treatment is typically less invasive and more effective. During your dental check-up, our dentist will examine your teeth for signs of dental decay. It is important to know that cavities can occur on all areas of a tooth, above and below the gum line, and are classified based on where they occur and their extent of progression. Smooth Surface Cavities | These cavities occur on the flat surfaces of our teeth and are typically the result of plaque buildup. They often progress slowly and can be easier to detect during regular dental check-ups. Pit and Fissure Cavities | Found on the chewing surfaces of molars and premolars, these cavities occur in the pits and fissures of teeth, making them more susceptible to food particle accumulation and decay. These areas can be more challenging to clean effectively, leading to increased cavity risk. Root Cavities | Root cavities develop on the tooth roots, usually in patients with gum recession or periodontal disease. When gums recede, the tooth roots become exposed, making them vulnerable to decay. Root cavities can progress rapidly due to the softer nature of root surfaces compared to enamel. Coronal Cavities | These are the most common type and occur on the crown or visible surface of a tooth. Coronal cavities can affect both enamel and dentin, progressing deeper into the tooth structure if left untreated. Recurrent Cavities | Sometimes referred to as secondary cavities, these develop around existing dental fillings, crowns, or other restorative dental work. They occur due to the breakdown of the material or the presence of bacteria at the margins of th Pediatric Dentistry | Sealants, Fillings, Sedation, Emergencies HOME ABOUT OUR TEAM Dr. Lloyd Turner Dr. Cchul Young Byun Dr. Simon Wong Dr. Conan James Teng Dr. Rachel Chiang Dr. Jasmin Wong PATIENT INFO Dental Insurance Dental Financing At Home Care Post-Surgical Care Biological Dentistry WHAT WE TREAT Cavities and Dental Decay Cracked and Chipped Teeth Failing, Missing, or Knocked Out Teeth Toothaches and Sensitive Teeth Stained and Discolored Teeth Dental Anxiety Bad Breath Clenching, Grinding, and Jaw Pain Sleeping Issues Gum Disease Misaligned Teeth OUR SERVICES Dental Emergency Dental Cleanings Dental Fillings Cosmetic Dentistry Dental Sedation Dental Implants Dental Implant Maintenance Single Tooth Implants All-on-X Implants Dental Implant Surgery Dental Crowns and Dental Bridges Root Canals ClearCorrect Aligners Pediatric Dentistry Understanding Baby Teeth Dental Sedation For Kids Pacifier Use and Thumb Sucking Frenectomy History of the Tooth Fairy Oral Surgery Full Mouth Reconstruction Wisdom Teeth Removal Dentures Custom Mouth Guards Oral Cancer Screenings SMILE GALLERY CONTACT US Contact Calstate Monterey Park Contact Rowland Heights Contact Glendale Family Dental Care Your Local Dentist We understand that trying to find a nearby dentist you can trust is difficult, that is why we make it easy for you to work with us. During a typical visit with our dentist, we do a thorough exam to assess the health of your child's teeth, gums, and mouth. We may take x-rays to check for cavities, clean and polish their teeth, and apply fluoride for cavity prevention. Before you leave, we will discuss and reinforce proper oral hygiene practice at home. Dental Fillings Typically, small cavities, or cavities on your child's front teeth, are fixed with a white composite filling, and big cavities on your child's back teeth and molars can be restored with stainless steel crowns. Crowns are used for larger cavities to help protect teeth from further issues, especially if they are permanent teeth. We recommend cleaning your child's teeth after every snack and meal to prevent the need for a dental filling. Sports Guards Does your child play a contact sport? To keep their teeth, gums, and smile protected, a custom-fit mouth guard would be a great place to start. The guards we use are form-fitting and come in a variety of colors. Dental Sedation Children can be fussy. To help make you and your child more comfortable at our office, we are proud to provide dental sedation to help keep your child at ease during most dental procedures we offer. Dental Sealants Icon of a perfect tooth being protected | checkmark beside a solid tooth | Dental Sealants Sealants are a protective coating placed on the grooves of teeth (typically molars that are 6-years or older) to help prevent cavities. The sealant blocks food particles from getting trapped in pits and grooves of your child's teeth. The procedure is simple and non-invasive.  Dental Emergencies Icon of a tooth on a suitcase | Dental Emergencies | Advanced Dental Care For Your Child Children tend to be more care-free, and care-less, than grown-ups. If you do consume these things, we recommend brushing and flossing your teeth after they are consumed or try and stay away from them altogether. In most cases, a soft diet is recommended for the first 48-hours after your procedure and to chew on the other side of your mouth and avoid hard and sticky foods. Also avoid foods that break into small pieces when you chew them, such as raw vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and popcorn. It is important to note that there may be sensitivity to hot and/or cold, pressure, and swelling after a dental procedure. In most cases, any discomfort will subside dramatically within the first 24-48-hours. Item Link Pain Relief After a major procedure, most discomfort can be managed with an over-the-counter pain reliever. Pain medications work best when taken before the pain reaches its worst. Pain medications should be taken on a schedule and never more than the recommended dose. An acute or persistent toothache is common with most orthodontic treatment, however, another cause of toothache is decay. Decay is a bacterial infection that can spread through many parts of the tooth, and even into the gum tissue. Sometimes, a toothache indicates that you may need root canal treatment — a procedure that not only relieves the discomfort but can also keep your tooth from needing to be extracted. Other times, the discomfort may be caused by a loose filling or by a crack. The only way to know for sure what is causing your toothache is to make an appointment with us. Avoid using straws, spitting, vigorous swishing of fluids, and smoking, as all these activities can interfere with the healing process. Item Link Proper Care When brushing, we recommend using a soft-bristle toothbrush as it is gentler on your teeth and gums. As for toothpaste, this depends on your oral health as there are different toothpaste recommendations depending on your individual needs. If you are curious about which toothbrush or toothpaste is best for you, please call our practice to setup an appointment. Your gums may be tender around the tooth that has been worked on. Keeping your gums clean with gentle flossing, brushing, and rinsing with warm saltwater (1/2 tsp of regular table salt in 8oz of warm water) will help your gums recover more quickly. We accept DentiCal. Dental insurance can be tricky to understand as most insurance policy documents are many pages long. The coverage for each dental service also depends on your individual policy, which can vary greatly if your policy is individual, or one provided by your employer. Luckily, we are here to make sense of insurance policies to ensure you receive the proper treatment and that your insurance provider covers their share. We may do this by submitting the claims on your behalf to find out more about your coverage limits, or providing you with all the paperwork so you can handle the insurance claims with ease. It would be helpful for you to know your insurance coverage information before coming in as this will help speed along your treatment plans. Some of the questions we usually ask insurance providers include: What is covered? How much is covered? What is the coverage limit amount? Is there a deductible? (if so, how much?) Can I choose other procedures not listed on the plan but are in the same category of treatment? Please provide all the details regarding this specific treatment option (provide treatment option) It is important to note that insurance carriers do not release information to third parties (including dental practices) even if we have informed and signed consent. So, we will do our best to ensure you know your limits before any procedures and treatment plans are started. It is also important to note that regardless of the insurance coverage, the patient is responsible for the cost of service. We may provide financing options depending on your individual situation and any patient who is looking for assistance should speak with our practice upon booking their next appointment.
