"transcript": "My name is Liam Dempsey. I'm from suburban Philadelphia. We are currently in American University, and this is my son Charlie. Charlie Dempsey is a rising senior. The reason we started looking at debate camps was Charlie wanted to do something proactive for the summer, wanted something that was intellectually engaging and enabled him to kind of push the boat out a little bit and to try something new. Found Capital Debate and seemed well reviewed.\n\nMaterials on the Capital Debate website made it clear that people in the video were really enjoying themselves and seemed to be learning a lot from the camp, both in terms of debate skills, kind of the practical focus of the camp, but also just growing up skills and human relations skills and making friendships with people you've never met before. It coincides with a pretty significant period of growth in most people's lives. They're transitioning from relying on their parents and their teachers make their own decisions and navigate their own roads. I think that's probably being one of the really biggest changes that we've seen in Charlie is that his sense of this is what I think I want to do.\n\nI'm going to look into it, do some research on it, ask for some help with research, and then I'm going to plot a course and go and do it. It's been fantastic to see his growth in his first year at camp when he was just a camper. He was already telling us about they have this CIT opportunity. When the time came to consider whether or not he really wanted to do that, the application period in winter before, he was on it.\n\nHe was, Hey, the deadline's coming up. I really want to do it. I'm not surprised at all that he's here. Some of that is thanks to capital debate, the way the camp is run, the way the teachers engage with the campers, and just the general sense of support and camaraderie and really working to enable the people attending here to flourish in their own way.\n\nCharlie has been on a road leadership for a number of years. He's active in clubs in and around his school, extracurriculars outside of school. For me as a parent to see him here, it's absolutely fantastic that he's having an opportunity to live away from home, having find new ways to anchor himself.\n\nI've been very impressed with the stories that we hear, the feedback we get from his team leaders. It's been a good experience for him and it's been a delight for us as parents to witness. Capital debate as a differentiator from some of the other programs that Charlie's been involved in there. The emphasis on individual growth and flourishing of the camper and not just on debate skills and thinking skills.\n\nI've certainly noticed Charlie's critical thinking and ability to articulate his points has improved to other parents that they send their children to capital debate for the camp. I would invite them and encourage them to think about the CIT program as a natural progression of the kind of things they're learning. Again, just debate, not just presentation and argumentation, but the emphasis on the holistic approach to flourishing. Pretty impressive to see here at Capital Debate.\n\nI'm absolutely delighted with the support that Charlie's gotten through the program.",

"transcript": "Yeah, I'm Alina. I'm an eighth grader. And I did my first program with Capital last summer at UCLA, and it was the camp. And I absolutely loved it.\n\nIt was my first introduction to speech and debate. My dad had done it in high school, and so we were talking about it as a family, and I was like, Hey, I'll try this, because I kind of, I liked public speaking beforehand, but I really wanted to get better, and I loved researching and writing speeches and all of that. And so getting my first experience with that was really great. I love Capital Debate.\n\nI couldn't think more highly of it.\n\nAnd it's just because the instructors are just, in addition to being such lovely people, so knowledgeable in their subject matter and are always encouraging, but help you improve without ever talking poorly about what you're doing. They're just amazing. And then the curriculum is also so well structured. The topics are fascinating.\n\nThey're things I wouldn't have even thought about if it weren't for being engaged in the program. And I learned so much and there are topics that I find myself being like, heck, I knew about that. And it was just because it was some tangential part of the research that I had done for a capital speech. In addition, it just kind of teaches you skills that I know I'll use for the rest of my life.\n\nLike going into it, was decent at public speaking, would say, but I like really kind of obliterated any nurse that I might have about talking in front of people or structuring speeches on the spot just by doing this, which is amazing. And then just last, it was so much fun. Everyone, the instructors, my fellow campers were so amazing and so kind.\n\nAnd we had just a really great time. And so I'm so excited because I'm going back. And I guess one last thing is Capital has also been super helpful in my transition into high school. So really from doing Capital Debate, I've decided that I want to pursue that in high school as kind of my thing.\n\nAnd so Capital has been so helpful in helping me figure out where I want to be and how I want to apply that. And so even if speech and debate like isn't your thing already, or you don't think it's going to be your thing in the future, it's still such a worthwhile experience. And who knows, maybe you'll end up like me and love it for the rest of your life. So yeah, so that's, that's my two cents.\n\nI guess I couldn't, I couldn't have a more ringing endorsement of the program. And it's just so amazing. So dad, if you want to.\n\nI think you covered it all. It's hard to top that. I think the only thing that I would just share then maybe as a parent, which is, you know, when you're dropping your kid off again at camp at a new place, just that feeling of like, oh, what does the welcome look like? They do a phenomenal job making your kid feel welcome from the moment that they show up and check their name off on the list.\n\nAnd of course, everybody's expecting that there'll be a lot of public speaking, but as probably came through in Alina's comments, I mean, she had an amazing time and just had fun interacting with everybody there. And so for us, the test was basically on the last day of camp. It was like you need to sign me up for next year and that's what we did. And then the other thing I will just touch on is I feel like the team here is definitely invested in your child's success.\n\nAnd she alluded to the fact that we've been navigating some thorny issues around, you know, where we are in the country and what debate and speech and debate programs might be around and how to supplement and how to and the entire team starting from top down has been super instrumental and helpful in that. So we've definitely appreciated that along the way.",

"transcript": "My name is Crystal. And last year Lily was a first time capital debate camper at UNC Chapel Hill. This was also the first time that she would spend more than two nights away from her dad and me. And we were quite apprehensive about sending our then eleven year old only child to a camp that is an eight hour drive from our home for twelve days.\n\nBut the Capital Debate team was very, very patient with answering our many, many questions.\n\nAnd Lily was very brave, which encouraged her dad and me to be brave also.\n\nAnd safety was our number one priority and the capital debate team addressed our concerns by providing a comprehensive approach to safety. And we especially valued the practice that campers always have an adult team member supervising them. In our experience, the Capital team truly goes the extra mile to enforce the highest safety standards. So parents, families, I just want to share that Lily was safe and that she felt safe as a camper. And she also learned a lot. We thought Capital Debate would be good for her in part because she enjoys future problem solving with her school's academic team. And also she has a strong sense of personal agency.\n\nShe is willing to speak up and share her voice on issues that are important to her. So it was a great fit for those reasons, but at Capital it was so much more. It helped her develop confidence while speaking in front of her classroom peers. It helped her perform with extracurricular activities like future problem solving, and it helped her with their interpersonal and personal growth in her daily life.\n\nLily really developed her soft skills at camp. For example, she learned how to do laundry, awaken without help from mom and dad, prepare for the day in a timely manner and wind down at bedtime, and it helped her build those new friendships. Perhaps the most importantly, she had fun. She enjoyed spending time with her suite mates and new friends.\n\nAnd I heard a lot about the talent show, karaoke, cafeteria food, soccer, trekking all across campus to each activity. But overall, Lily's twenty twenty four Capital Debate summer experience was so positive that she is returning again this year. Last year, she did enjoy the Chapel Hill campus very much. And this year for a variety, she is trying a new campus at the Hunt School of Princeton.\n\nBut Lily, her dad and I are looking forward to another great Capital Debate summer camp. And we certainly hope to see each of you on the videos, if not at that camp. And thanks again, Rachel, allowing us to share our experience tonight.",

"transcript": "Hi, everyone. My name is Stephanie. I'm Karis' mom.\n\nAnd we chose the residential option at the University of Washington. We live in Seattle or in the in a suburb in Bellevue close by. And we chose the residential option because we wanted to give her a chance of, you you know, being a little bit more independent, maybe experiencing, an environment where we weren't around, where her parents weren't around. And we had some hesitations, and the staff could probably attest to, like, they were She was a little bit homesick as well.\n\nAnd one of the things that, you know, we loved about Capital Debate was how supportive they were in terms of helping her get through that homesickness. And within, like, the first two days, she really, found herself there. She found her people. She found comfort in the staff and really started really enjoying her time there.\n\nAnd so much that she wanted to go back this summer. And as a parent, that made me feel really good. And I also was able to, from a speech perspective, really see the growth, and I was very impressed in that she was willing to take that step of of really challenging herself and competing with the high schoolers when she was just seventh grader, and it was her first time at capital debate. She I remember her calling me, and she told me she was like, mom, did you put my age wrong in in the form because why did they put me in high school debate?\n\nAnd I just remember her saying, but it's okay. You know? I wanna try it anyways. I'm like, okay.\n\nWe'll go for it. And I thought that was really neat that the instructors were very supportive of that and gave her that opportunity that she felt like she she was willing to take. And then I I guess I'd say, lastly, I've seen really a lot of growth also in her speaking. She at school and even outside of school, being willing to, you know, approach others, whether it's, outside of her comfort zone.\n\nBecause she has this ability to speak, I think it adds confidence in her her ability to approach other people as well as well as within the school, whether it's activities or clubs that she's a part of, not being afraid to speaking up and sharing her ideas. And then there have been a few times unsolicited feedback as well to me where parents have come to me and said, oh, Charis, she's such a great, eloquent speaker, and, you know, I never got that before before her joining capital debate. It was I don't know. This year has been super strange that people have come up to me and, oh, is that your daughter?\n\nShe's the one who speaks really well. And I was like, oh, thank you. But, yeah, those are some of the things that I've seen, after I have her joining Capital Debate last summer.",
