TMJ are joints that are located at the jawline on both sides of your mouth, and they make it possible to open and close your mouth smoothly while you speak, chew your food, or even swallow. Made up of tendons, the jawbones, and a ball-and-socket joint, TMJ problems can make a lot of everyday processes painful and uncomfortable. TMJ disorders are common, but they are also a very treatable condition. At Cassara Dental, we have professionals who are highly familiar with treating patients with TMJ in Mountain View, CA. Take a look at some of the things you should know about TMJ disorders and how you may be able to get some much-needed relief. A Look at Common Causes of TMJ Disorders TMJ disorders can have several underlying causes, and the condition may not always be readily linked to a specific cause. Some of the most common causes of TMJ disorders include: Dislocation of the TMJ currently or previously Prior injury to the TMJ or surrounding joints and tissues Congenital tooth and jaw alignment problems Arthritis of the TMJ Teeth grinding or stress-related jaw clenching Understanding the cause of the disorder can definitely help with treatment. However, treatment can be attempted even if the precise cause of the disorder is unknown. How TMJ Orders Are Diagnosed If you or your dentist suspects that you have a TMJ disorder, you will be examined closely to determine if there is indeed an issue. Before a proper diagnosis can be given, the dentist may: Perform X-rays to get an in-depth look at the joints Do evaluations and check for popping, clicking, and other telltale signs of the condition Complete a series of tests in which you are required to move your mouth in certain ways or directions Once you have been diagnosed with TMJ in Mountain View, your dentist can create a plan of treatment moving forward. Ways to Alleviate TMJ Disorders On Your Own TMJ in Mountain View can range from very mild to very severe, and alleviating the symptoms of the disorder will rely heavily on how severe your case is. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research recommends trying treatments at home first unless your issues are severe. If you have a mild TMJ disorder, you may be able to do certain things at home to help with the symptoms you experience, such as: Switching your diet to include softer food choices most of the time Using heat packs or warm compresses to relieve pain or discomfort Stopping gum chewing or habits like biting or chewing your fingernails Utilizing relaxation techniques to relieve tension and stress in the jaws In some cases, implementing these small changes at home can help relieve some symptoms you have been experiencing due to suspected TMJ. However, obtaining a professional opinion from a dentist who specializes in TMJ treatment is always a good idea. Further Treatments Available for TMJ Disorders in Mountain View, CA If the minimal treatments you try at home do not work, and the dentist does diagnose you with a TMJ disorder, further treatments will be discussed as possible solutions. Your dentist may recommend: Wearing a mouth guard at night to prevent teeth grinding Doing muscle training exercises for your TMJ to strengthen the area Taking prescription medications to relieve the tension, such as anti-inflammatory medication for arthritis or muscle relaxers to relieve tension The most invasive form of treatment for TMJ may involve surgery, which will involve resetting the jawline so you have a more even bite and less stress on the jaw muscles. Orthodontic treatment may also be used to correct bite issues that could be contributing to the TMJ disorder. Reach Out to Us at Cassara Dental for Information About How We Can help Living with TMJ disorders can be all-out frustrating and uncomfortable, but usually, a TMJ dentist in Mountain View, CA can offer treatment that will help. And, if you have imperfect teeth that need straightening, you can do so without having to wear traditional metal braces, thanks to Invisalign® aligners. Invisalign aligners don’t interrupt your life — they fit your life. And at each stage, you can see the progress of your new smile transforming. Read below to learn more about Invisalign in Mountain View, CA. What is Invisalign? Invisalign is a cutting edge alternative to braces that’s nearly undetectable to others. It doesn’t use wires and brackets to straighten your teeth, but instead a series of customized, clear and removable appliances known as aligners. The aligners are custom-made for you and just you. The aligner trays are created with comfortable, smooth and practically invisible plastic you place over your teeth. They shift your teeth into position gently and slowly. Approximately every couple of weeks, you wear a new set of aligners, until you’ve completed your treatment. You’ll achieve a perfect smile with minimal interference to your day-to-day life. You can take them out to enjoy your favorite foods like: Gum Apples Popcorn And, you continue brushing and flossing as you normally would. Invisalign in Mountain View is a great option for both adults and teens looking to have their teeth straightened without braces for an improved smile and better oral health. There are options for Invisalign for adults and Invisalign for teens. Benefits of Invisalign Because of the unique technique Invisalign uses for moving teeth, it comes with a number of benefits over regular braces, including: More discreet: Invisalign aligners is a more discreet type of orthodontic treatment since the aligners are virtually invisible and almost nobody will even know you’re wearing them. You don’t have to worry about the inconvenience of braces during social events, photos or major presentations at work. Enjoy your favorite foods: You remove the aligners when eating with Invisalign, so you don’t need to worry about changing or modifying your diet like you would with braces. Increased comfort: Invisalign aligners are smooth to the touch, unlike the hard edges of the wires and brackets with braces. So, you won’t get minor cuts and scrapes in your mouth like you potentially can with braces. Brushing and flossing become easy : When you brush and floss your teeth, you take out the aligners, so oral hygiene is simple. How Does Invisalign Differ from Braces? Whether you want Invisalign in Mountain View for adults or teens, the most obvious difference between braces and Invisalign is the appearance. With braces, our orthodontist attaches brackets to each of your teeth with bonding material. They then add an archwire (thin, metal wire) from backet to bracket. Then the wire applies a slight force, causing your teeth to shift. Invisalign uses a series of clear removable, computer-generated aligners that you wear which gradually shift your teeth into position with each set you put in. The aligners in the Invisalign treatment are smooth and more comfortable than braces and virtually invisible, making it likely individuals won’t know you’re even wearing them. Instead of being bonded or cemented to your teeth like with metal braces, you can remove clear aligners. So, you can actually remove them for things like: Eating Brushing and Flossing Photos Social occasions What Is the Invisalign Treatment Process? The Invisalign treatment process is quite similar to that of braces or other orthodontic treatments, with several changes. This is basically what you can expect: Your first Invisalign visit: During your initial visit, our orthodontist evaluates your orthodontic situation thoroughly and provide you with a comprehensive diagnosis. If they believe you’re an ideal candidate, they’ll begin your treatment. Tailoring your Invisalign treatment plan: Based on their diagnostic information, they’ll create a detailed, 3D computer model version of your bite. They’ll then use this model to customize your treatment plan and break it into a couple of week segments. Your custom aligners are manufactured: Based on the treatment plan, they’ll have your customized set of Invisalign clear aligners manufactured precisely to fit your mouth; either 12 or 48 pairs. Treatment: Each set of aligners, you’ll wear for two weeks, 22 hours a day. Then, you’ll switch to the next set which will shift your teeth closer to the ideal position. After your last set of aligners, your teeth should be straight and your treatment is complete. Invisalign for Teens Invisalign in Mountain View for teens were particularly developed keeping in mind the different challenges teens face when they use aligners to straighten their teeth. The Invisalign aligners’ special features that help teenagers deal with the common problems of wearing aligners. These special Invisalign for teens features include: Replacement Aligners: Damaging or losing aligners is a common complaint of teens using aligners. Invisalign for teens addresses this problem easily since it comes with six sets of replacement aligners. This way, teens can continue with their treatment if they damage or lose a set of aligners without any interruptions. Eruption Tabs: For teens who have incompletely erupted permanent teeth or still have some of their baby teeth, Invisalign for teens is a great solution, since the aligners have spaces for allowing simple eruption of permanent teeth. Color Indicators: Many teenagers don’t wear aligners in the way in which they’re prescribed by their orthodontist. Invisalign for teens makes it simpler for teens to follow their prescribed treatment plan. It has small blue marker dots that after two weeks (336 hours of wear), fade away, letting the teen know it’s time for a new set. There are some potential complications involved with having a tooth “pulled,” however. A missing tooth can lead to problems with chewing or it can cause the other teeth in your mouth to shift. Because of these potential complications, Dr. Cassara will always discuss alternatives to tooth extractions with you, as well as ways to replace a tooth that needs to come out. Prior to performing a tooth extraction, Dr. Cassara will talk with you about your medical history, because certain health conditions can lead to an increased risk of infection or other complications. Reasons for Tooth Extractions Sometimes a tooth is so badly damaged or decayed that it cannot be preserved or repaired. Tooth extraction is often recommended in these cases. Here are some other scenarios that might call for a tooth extraction in Mountain View: Infection: If tooth decay leads to an infection that spreads to the pulp inside the tooth, an extraction may be necessary. The best option would be a root canal to remove the infected pulp, but if the infection is too severe, a tooth extraction is needed to prevent the infection from spreading to other teeth. Periodontal disease (gum disease): A severe case of gum disease can cause a tooth or several teeth to loosen in the mouth. A tooth extraction might be needed in order to treat the gum disease. Crowded Teeth: If a tooth is unable to break through the gums (erupt), Dr. Cassara will sometimes extract a tooth that is in the way. Tooth extraction is also sometimes required as a preparation for orthodontic procedures (straightening the teeth). If a patient’s teeth are too big for the mouth, the orthodontic procedure may not be possible until after an extraction. Tooth Extraction Procedure Dr. Cassara will use an anesthetic to numb the tooth, jawbone, and gums around the extraction site. The anesthetic prevents pain from the procedure, but you will still feel a lot of pressure in your mouth as the tooth is pulled. If a tooth is impacted, Dr. Cassara will use a forceps to grasp the tooth and rock it back and forth to loosen it from the jawbone and surrounding ligaments. If a tooth is especially difficult to extract, Dr. Cassara will remove it in several pieces, which is a procedure called “sectioning.” A blood clot usually forms in the socket where the tooth is removed. Sometimes stitching is required following a tooth extraction. If the blood clot breaks loose, it can cause an extremely painful condition known as “dry socket.” Dr. Cassara will need to place a sedative dressing over the socket if this happens, which will remain in place until a new blood clot forms. Tooth Extraction After-Care Take the painkillers prescribed by Dr. Cassara Applying ice packs for 10 minutes can reduce swelling at the extraction site Rest for 24 hours after the extraction; limit activities for another two days Avoid rinsing, spitting forcefully or drinking through a straw for 24 hours Eat soft foods the first day after the extraction Do not smoke If you have a painful tooth and you are concerned that it may need to be extracted, contact Dr. Cassara’s office in Mountain View today. You can schedule an appointment by calling 650-969-2866. The artificial teeth are designed to resemble natural teeth in both form and function. Because tooth loss can result in the loss of the ability to speak clearly and to properly chew your food as well as interfere with your appearance, it’s important to pursue options such as bridges if you’re missing one or more teeth. Missing teeth can also increase your risk of developing gum disease, and studies have shown that this potential risk can be significantly reduced by using a bridge. Here’s what you need to know about bridges: Types of Dental Bridges Bridges are either permanently attached or removable. Otherwise called ‘fixed bridges,’ permanently attached bridges are affixed in place using dental cement to the abutment teeth. They are either bonded directly to these teeth or to crowns that are placed over these teeth. The attachments process can take up to three visits to complete depending on the specifics of the situation. The first step is to prepare the abutment teeth for the procedure. On the next visit, your dentist will take an impression of the abutment tooth or teeth to use as a mold for the artificial teeth — it is important that they match the abutment teeth as closely as possible in size or shape. After the artificial teeth have been produced by a dental lab, your dentist will affix them to the abutment teeth or their crowns. Most people who get dental bridges opt for this type of bridge. Removable bridges can be taken out and cleaned using the same process you’d use to care for a removable set of full dentures. These bridges are attached to the abutment teeth with precision attachments, which is why they are also known as ‘precision bridge.’ Removable bridges are best for those who don’t have much bone material in the jaw. Your dentist can help you decide which type of bridge would be better for you. Materials Used in Bridgework Bridges can be constructed from a variety of materials. The most common include porcelain, non-precious metal alloys, and gold alloys. Most bridges involve combinations of these materials, with one of the most popular being porcelain bonded to metal. Caring for a Dental Bridge Practicing proper oral hygiene is essential after you get a bridge because both types of bridges depend on the surrounding teeth to provide support; this is why we highly recommend you continue to include brushing and flossing as a part of your regular routine. If you’ve got a fixed bridge, your dentist will recommend a specialized nylon floss designed for use on this type of bridge. Removable bridges should be taken out and cleaned on a nightly basis and should not be worn overnight. You should also consume a balanced diet with a nutritional emphasis and avoid sugary beverages and snacks. Use a straw for things such as sweet teas or soda to cut down on the amount of contact your teeth have with sugar. Please feel free to schedule an appointment today for more information on which kind of bridge would best suit your individual needs and preferences. Veneers can restore your smile painlessly, without the use of harsh chemical whiteners or other treatments. You will once again feel confident to flash your smile in every social situation after Dr. Cassara fits you with a custom set of dental veneers. Porcelain Veneers Veneers are a thin shell of porcelain that is custom-made to cover the front side of the patient’s teeth. For the process to begin, Dr. Cassara will remove approximately 1mm of enamel from the front of each tooth surface. An impression of the patient’s teeth is then made, in order to form a mold of the teeth. A dental laboratory will use the mold to craft the veneers, so they should be an exact fit on the patient’s teeth. Veneers are custom made to match the shape and color of the teeth, and they look completely natural when installed. In a second follow-up visit, Dr. Cassara will bond the veneers to the front of the teeth with a special type of dental cement. Because some of the teeth’s enamel is removed, the veneer treatment is irreversible. Another thing to note is that once the veneers have been cemented in place, the color cannot be changed. The patient’s teeth may be sensitive to heat and cold for the first few days after treatment. Veneers are very strong, but they can be damaged by chewing hard substances such as ice or biting the fingernails. Candidacy for Porcelain Veneers in Mountain View Porcelain veneers in Mountain View can be a good cosmetic option for adults with discolored, chipped or decayed teeth. Veneers can also be used to fill a gap between teeth, or to help deal with minor spacing or bite problems in the mouth. The nice thing about veneers is that the patient can be a part of the design process. Dr. Cassara will discuss your goals for the treatment, and you can share your ideas for what you want to be corrected and how you want your new smile to look. Advantages of Porcelain Veneers Gives patients the best smile in the room Very little tooth structure lost in treatment Little to no anesthesia required Stain-resistant, even to foods and drinks that are prone to staining teeth (such as tea and coffee) Caring for Porcelain Veneers Patients should treat their porcelain veneers just as they would their regular teeth. Brushing and flossing remain just as important with veneers in place as they were before the veneers were installed. Be sure to use a non-abrasive toothpaste for daily care. During dental cleaning appointments, be sure to remind the dental hygienist that you have porcelain veneers, so they will use a non-abrasive whitener. If you have a habit of grinding your teeth at night, Dr. Cassara may recommend a nightguard to wear when you sleep, to help prevent damage to the veneers. If a veneer is ever accidentally chipped or damaged, it is usually possible to replace only the damaged one. With proper care and good oral hygiene, dental veneers can give you a beautiful smile for up to 10 years. If you think you might be a good candidate for veneers in Mountain View and would like to learn more, contact Dr. Cassara’s office today at 650-969-2866 to schedule an appointment . However, our goal is to ensure that patients have smiles that make them feel good about themselves, so we strive to create a natural look that’s undetectable. For instance, our crowns are designed to look and feel like authentic teeth instead of obvious fakes, leaving you with a happy, confident smile. Even if your teeth are severely damaged, we can give you the smile of your dreams using a technique we’ve perfected that involves the use of porcelain crowns. This procedure is suitable for almost all dental patients, and we’ve earned a reputation in the community as being masters of this particular craft. In fact, it is not at all unusual for these treatments to last as long as 30 years, and this technology even works on those with missing or extremely damaged teeth. Our patients are thrilled when they’re given back a smile they can be proud of. How Our Crown Procedure Works The process of having crowns installed generally requires patients to make two visits to our office. During the first visit, we remove any external decay from the surface of the tooth and put a temporary crown in place. Temporary crowns are made from either metal or plastic. We also shape the tooth to provide a mold for a custom fit for the new crown. On the second visit, we’ll remove the temporary crown and put the new one in place. After we’ve adjusted it, we’ll cement it in place and you’ll have a beautiful new tooth that feels and looks absolutely natural. Why Dental Crowns? Crowns are a great solution for those whose teeth have been so badly stained they can’t be helped by whitening techniques and for those with chipped or broken teeth due to an injury. However, crowns provide more than just cosmetic functionality. They also help alleviate pain in situations where the tooth has a hairline fracture as well as help keep those with root canal fillings from breaking. We use both highest grade porcelain or porcelain that has been bonded to gold. The strength, resiliency, and durability of these materials make them ideal for situations where the teeth have been damaged due to injury, disease, decay, or severe stains as the result of years of smoking tobacco products. Taking Care of Your Crowns In order to get the most from your crowns, it’s essential that you continue to practice good oral hygiene. When you brush your teeth, make sure you pay special attention to the area where the gum and the crown meet, and besides regular brushing and flossing, use an antibacterial mouthwash at least once a day. Use a soft-bristled brush in order to minimize irritation to the gums, and use a gentle touch when brushing the crown itself. If you’d like more information on regaining your smile’s former glory, please don’t hesitate to contact our office and schedule a consultation . Although it’s possible to greatly decrease your chances of developing tooth decay by practicing good oral hygiene and limiting sugary snacks and beverages, most people get at least one cavity during their lives. Symptoms of cavities include pain, sensitivity to heat and cold, or visible holes in the teeth — however, many patients experience no signs or symptoms of cavities at all, which is why it’s important to schedule dental checkups on a regular basis. Those who are particularly susceptible to the development of tooth decay should speak with their oral care professional about possibly getting antibacterial treatments designed to keep bacteria at minimal levels. Risk Factors of Leaving Cavities Untreated Although it may be tempting to ignore cavities in the hopes that they will go away, things will just continue to get worse if they’re left untreated. The decay will continue to erode the tooth, and you could end up losing it altogether as well as experience significant pain as the condition progresses. Affected teeth may also develop abscesses, and in extreme cases, the gum tissue may become infected. Materials Commonly Used for Fillings Traditional fillings have been made from either gold or silver amalgam fillings. However, because silver fillings release a small amount of mercury, more and more patients are requesting other options. Another drawback of both gold and silver fillings is that they don’t match the color of the natural teeth. Fortunately, modern dental fillings include tooth-colored materials as well as provide other benefits. Modern filling choices include: Composite resin fillings. These fillings are comprised of a mixture of plastic and resin that are installed in the tooth cavity while it is still soft, which provides it with the opportunity to mold to the cavity for a perfect fit. Porcelain fillings. The most expensive filling option, porcelain fillings offer the most natural look. They’re also more durable and stain-resistant than other types of fillings, although care must be taken because they can be more brittle than the other types. Glass Ionomer fillings. Often used to fill cavities in children because they are still growing, glass ionomer fillings have an average life expectancy of five years. During this period of time, they release small amounts of fluoride in order to promote healthy teeth and gum tissue. Gold and silver fillings are still used as well. Many patients prefer the extreme durability of gold fillings, while others just like the way they look. However, it can be difficult to find a dentist who still offers them. Silver fillings are also long-lasting and durable, and they’re often used as filling material for cavities in the back of the mouth that aren’t easily visible. Aftercare Taking care of your teeth after fillings have been installed involves practicing good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing twice per day and using an antibacterial mouthwash at least once per day. Your dentist can provide you with further advice and help you decide which type of filling is best for you. Please don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment if you haven’t seen your dentist in the past six months or if you have reason to suspect that you may have a cavity or other dental health issues. The scan, along with the Oral Health Care Assessment, can show us images of a patient’s bite in many forms. This allows us to assess a patient to see if they suffer from Malocclusion. Malocclusion is a disease that can be seen in many forms, including: Crossbite Open bite Deep bite Overjet Crowding Diastema Spacing and rotation of the teeth. When untreated, malocclusion can lead to: Wear (worn down/short teeth) Recession Tooth chips Thinning Collision Shifting Poor root support Poor mobility and worst case, tooth loss. If malocclusion is present, the scan also allows us to find areas of concern and express ways to treat the disease and prevent further issues. An iTero scan can also be used for Restorative Solutions, Orthodontic Solutions, and Lab Solutions. Restorative Solutions iTero scan can enhance treatment predictability — from crowns and bridges to edentulous cases — to boost efficiency. Orthodontic Solutions iTero scan provides a full view of a patient’s mouth which can help optimize treatment accuracy and provide rich 3D visuals for patient engagement. Lab Solutions iTero allows us to scan patients rather than take traditional impressions. A scan is typically much quicker and is more comfortable for the patient. Over time, our goal is to compare scans to show patients what changes have occurred appointment to appointment, or year to year using a Timelapse feature. They’ll be able to chew and speak normally, the contours of their face will be preserved, and they’ll hold onto their appealing smile. Replacement teeth are designed to look, feel, and perform as much like natural teeth as possible. Implants are just another way in which developments in dental technology have significantly changed the way people live — the only other option used to be dentures. Here’s what you need to know if you’re wondering whether dental implants in Mountain View might be right for you: How Dental Implants Work Implants are constructed from titanium, a low-density, water-resistant metal that’s lightweight as well as very strong. The implants are directly placed into the jawbone in areas where the teeth are missing. The material bonds with the bone to further increase its stability, essentially performing the same function for artificial teeth as tooth roots do for natural teeth. Are Implants Right for You? The first step in deciding whether to move forward with implant procedures is to schedule a thorough evaluation with your dental care professional. The dentist will take a complete dental history, ask you pertinent lifestyle questions, and perform a dental/radiographic examination. The ideal candidate for having dental implants installed are healthy, non-smoking individuals with enough gum and bone tissue to support the implants. Our team will pay close attention to any concerns or questions that you may have about implants so that you can make an informed decision. The Implant Process Depending on the type of implant and how many individual implants are going to be installed, the process can take anywhere from six to eighth months from start to finish. However, most patients don’t experience disruptions in their daily routines during this time period. The installation of dental procedures usually involves two separate surgical procedures. The first is when they’re actually implanted into the patient’s jawbone. During this time, they’ll bond with the bone to form a strong and stable base and remain below the gumline. You may be fitted with temporary dentures to wear during this time, and your dentist will probably recommend a diet of soft foods. After the bonding process is complete, your dentist will then begin the second phase, which involves attaching a small healing collar to the implants that will hold your new artificial teeth. Your dentist can then install your custom-made replacement teeth. How to Care for Implants If properly cared for, implants can last a lifetime. It’s important to practice the same good dental hygiene techniques that you practiced with your natural teeth. Brush and floss on a regular basis and use an antibacterial mouthwash at least once per day. Your dentist may recommend a type of dental floss developed specifically for those with implants as well as a low-abrasive toothpaste and an oral irrigator. Cosmetic dentists in Mountain View like those at Cassara Dental, work with you to come up with an effective treatment plan. Below, you’ll learn more information on cosmetic dentistry and the different procedures available. What is Cosmetic Dentistry in Mountain View? Cosmetic dentistry is a type of oral care method that focuses on enhancing the appearance of your teeth, mouth and smile. And, while cosmetic dentistry procedures are typically elective, instead of being essential, there are still some restorative benefits in some cases of treatment. The most common cosmetic dentistry procedures are relatively easy, while others can be more complex, requiring specialized care. Benefits of Cosmetic Dentistry There are various benefits of this type of dentistry, including: 1. Helps you Appear Younger As you get older, dental erosion and discoloration become more prominent. Your tooth enamel’s outer layer becomes worn down to where it reveals the color of your dentin or inner tooth. Other factors can also cause discoloration and could include: Medications Antihistamines Antibiotics Radiation or chemotherapy on your head or neck Certain diseases Environmental conditions Genetics Your cosmetic dentist in Mountain View can correct these problems, rejuvenate your teeth and help you look younger. 2. Prevents Future Dental Issues The primary goal of cosmetic dentistry is to provide you with an aesthetically-friendly smile. But, this doesn’t mean your dental health isn’t essential. Actually, being a cosmetic patient, you can receive restorative benefits such as: Repairing cavities Reinforcing a weak tooth Restoring a chipped, cracked or broken tooth Covering exposed teeth roots Fresh breath Straightening teeth which will make for easier and more effective cleaning 3. Improves Confidence When you lack self-confidence, it can impact your life in various ways. When you feel self-conscious about your teeth, you might not feel confident enough to do things like: Talk to your boss about creative ideas Speak at team meetings Attend extra work functions You might avoid smiling, therefore, you come across as being unhappy. With cosmetic dentistry, you’re more likely to be a more successful in your personal life and work, because you’re not worried about your appearance. 4. Offers Affordability More dentists have decided to specialize in cosmetic dentistry as well as new technology. And, with advanced development of industry technology, equipment and innovative procedures, technology has become more affordable. As technology improvements move forward and more cosmetic dentists in Mountain View provide these types of services, cosmetic dentistry is becoming more affordable for patients. Before, you might have had to pay out-of-pocket costs all at once. However, today, you have more affordable payment plans and options, making it simpler for you to receive these types of services you require. 5. Provides More Variety in Procedures Today, dental practitioners and oral surgeons have more variety in new techniques, being able to provide exceptional services to their patients. Furthermore, you can now receive the smile you’ll be proud of since your dentist can now offer various services that will meet your needs the best. For instance, you can talk to your dentist about procedures like: Teeth whitening Dental implants Porcelain veneers Facial fillers 6. Strengthens Teeth Have you stopped eating certain food because you have sore and weak teeth? There are many cosmetic options to help provide you with healthier teeth so you can once again enjoy these foods. And, cosmetic dentistry won’t only enhance your smile, but will also improve your teeth’s strength which will help them perform better and last longer. Cosmetic Dentistry in Mountain View Offered at Cassara Dental Cassara Dental provides several cosmetic dentistry options, including: 1. Teeth Bonding Tooth bonding is where our Mountain View, CA dentist uses tooth-colored material to change the color of your teeth or fill in gaps in your teeth. It requires one office visit, but the bonding can last for a few years. Bonding composite resins might be the best choice of material for slightly decayed and chipped teeth. It’s also used to fill small cavities with a tooth-colored filling. And, tooth bonding can be used to cover the whole outside surface of your tooth to change its shape and color or for closing gaps between your teeth. 2. Inlays and Outlays These are also called indirect fillings . They’re made by a dental lab and are used when you don’t have enough tooth structure for supporting a filling or if you have a tooth with mild to moderate decay. The dentist places the inlay right onto your tooth’s surface, provided there’s no damage to your tooth cusps. When a greater part of your tooth or the cusp is damaged though, an onlay is used instead for covering the entire surface of the tooth. 3. Teeth Whitening A basic cosmetic dentistry procedure is teeth whitening and our dentist can perform it right in our office. Whitening should occur after tartar, plaque and other debris are cleaned from each of your teeth’s surface, restoring their natural appearance. The dentist can also bleach your teeth to a lighter shade than their original color. 4. Veneers Veneers are custom-made, thin porcelain shells covering the front of your teeth to disguise imperfections or discoloration. Dr. Cassara can apply a tooth-colored composite resin to the surface of the tooth. This simple procedure requires only a single office visit, unlike dental veneers which require a mold of the teeth to be created, laboratory manufacturing time and finally the application of the veneers in another visit. Uses of Tooth Bonding Tooth bonding resin can be polished and expertly shaped by Dr. Cassara to match the surrounding teeth. It is most frequently used as a cosmetic procedure to improve the appearance of one or more teeth that are discolored, chipped or otherwise damaged. Bonding can fill gaps between teeth, elongate the teeth, or otherwise alter the visible shape of the teeth for cosmetic reasons. The procedure is even a viable alternative to amalgam fillings. Tooth bonding can even be used to protect the roots of teeth if a patient has receding gums. Tooth Bonding Procedure No special preparations are needed for tooth bonding, and as mentioned, it can be performed in a single visit to Dr. Cassara’s office. Unless the bonding is necessary to fill an infected tooth, you won’t even need a local anesthetic. The procedure is totally painless. Dr. Cassara will select a shade of composite resin that matches the natural color of your tooth. Then, the surface of the tooth will be abraded to roughen it. A conditioning solution is then applied to the tooth, which will allow the composite resin to bond to the tooth more easily. Once the tooth is ready, Dr. Cassara will apply the composite resin to it. The resin will be sculpted into the proper shape and then ultraviolet light can be applied to quickly harden it. After the material hardens, Dr. Cassara will trim, shape and polish the bonding resin until achieving the desired result. This process takes only 30 minutes to an hour to complete for one tooth. If you wish to have multiple teeth bonded, it may require additional office visits. Tooth Bonding After-Care Dr. Cassara will give you a list of foods and drinks that you should avoid for the first 48 hours after a tooth bonding procedure. These will be liquids and solids that tend to easily stain the resin, such as tea and coffee. Smoking should also be avoided to prevent discoloration. Always keep in mind that the resin used in tooth bonding is not as strong as your regular teeth. Activities like chewing ice or pens or biting the fingernails can easily chip the resin. Otherwise, care your teeth as normal, with regular brushing and flossing. With the proper care, tooth bonding resin can last for several years without the need for reapplying it. If the resin does chip or breaks off at any time, contact Dr. Cassara’s office immediately so it can be repaired. In the first few days after the procedure, let our office know right away if you feel sharp edges or if your teeth feel strange when biting down. Tooth bonding is a simple and pain-free cosmetic solution to chipped or discolored teeth. If you’d like to learn more, call our office to schedule an appointment with Dr. Cassara . Some people, however, dread teeth cleanings. With the strange noises, prodding, and smells, it’s not hard to understand why they may get a little anxious. Learning a little about a teeth cleaning procedure can help ease your anxiety about the procedure and make it a little easier to go through. It’s essential you have regular professional teeth cleanings even if you are brushing and flossing your teeth every day faithfully And, if you’re not that meticulous with your dental hygiene, you need a teeth cleaning even more. What Is a Teeth Cleaning Procedure? A tooth cleaning procedure is usually performed by our dental hygienist, although our dentist, Dr. Joseph M. Cassara DDS will sometimes perform the procedure too. The procedure takes around 30 to 60 minutes, and is essential for keeping your teeth and gums clean. Usually, a teeth cleaning procedure will involve the following: A physical exam. Before our dental hygienist performs the cleaning procedure, they’ll begin with a physical examination of your whole mouth. They’ll use a small mirror for checking around your gums and teeth to look for signs of inflamed gums (gingivitis) or other possible concerns. If they identify any major issues, they’ll call in Dr. Cassara to let them know if it’s safe to proceed. Scaling. The hygienist will use a small hooked tool to remove any tartar and plaque from your teeth’s surface, in between your teeth and near your gum line. Depending on the amount of buildup they see, they’ll use either an ultrasonic or manual scaler. The ultrasonic scaler uses water and gentle vibration for eliminating large deposits while the manual scaler feels like they’re scraping your teeth. Gritty toothpaste. Once the hygienist gets your teeth totally tartar-free, they’ll brush them using a high-powered electric brush that makes a type of grinding noise. Even though it sounds scary, it’s actually a good way of removing leftover tartar from the scaler and deep clean your teeth. Professional cleanings use a gritty consistency toothpaste to scrub your teeth gently. You can choose from various flavors. When a professional performs this cleaning, this polishing is safe to have performed twice a year. However, you don’t want to be as harsh at home when cleaning your teeth since you could wear down your enamel. Flossing. Even if you floss at home regularly, you should still have a professional flossing session. The hygienist will get deep in between your teeth and identify any possible trouble areas where your gums might bleed. If you floss regularly at home, this may seem pointless, but having a professional flossing session performed will help remove any leftover toothpaste for plaque from the earlier cleaning process. Rinsing. Next, the hygienist will have you rinse your mouth out to eliminate any debris. They’ll typically provide you with a rinse containing fluoride. Fluoride. During the teeth cleaning process, we may provide you with a fluoride treatment as well. You can choose which flavor of fluoride gel you want. The hygienist will place the gel inside a mouthpiece that you’ll wear for around a minute. What to Expect From a Teeth Cleaning Appointment? Most individuals don’t feel any real noticeable pain or discomfort while having their teeth cleaned. Some people even say they enjoy the process, particularly the clean-feeling results after it’s finished. If it’s been a while since you’ve had a cleaning, however, it might take several moments before you get used to the process of having your teeth cleaned. If you do experience any type of discomfort, the hygienist may provide you with a type of anesthetic like topical numbing gel. If bacterial buildup is causing gum irritation, they might bleed or become sore slightly during your cleaning. There are some home measures you might be able to take to prevent this from occurring in the future such as: More thorough brushing Special mouthrinses Improved floss technique It may also indicate you require in-office cleanings more frequently. This type of routine maintenance can help you avoid having to go through more involved dental procedures later on and will provide you with the best chance of keeping your teeth for a lifetime. Will X-Rays Be Involved? X-Rays are usually the only way of identifying whether or not you have cavities. Also, x-rays allow Dr. Cassara to screen for issues in the bone that surrounds your teeth, including any bone loss linked with infections around the roots of your teeth, periodontal disease and other issues that occur in your jawbones. X-rays today are extremely safe. Digital technology today has allowed us to substantially reduce how much radiation is required for obtaining a standard dental X-ray. What Diagnostic or Preventative Services WIll Be Involved? During a teeth cleaning, you’ll also receive,, be informed or, or scheduled for preventive and diagnostic services as well as any required educational information. Some preventive services might include: Stain removal Removal of tartar and plaque Polishing teeth, including crowns and fillings Fluoride application Adjustment and cleaning of partial dentures and dentures Sealants (for kids) Diagnostic services might include: Oral cancer exam and screening Updating and reviewing medical history, which includes information about pregnancy, heart problems, medications and diabetes that could impact your oral health Checking chewing, biting and swallowing patterns Gum tissue evaluation Examination or X-rays of teeth for detecting decay Referral to specialists for specialized treatment Educational services might include: Nutritional counseling Instructions for tooth brushing and flossing Self-care effectiveness evaluation Recommendations for treatment in the future (follow-up hygiene treatment, restorative options, periodontal (gum) issues) Tobacco-cessation counseling You should never wait until you start experiencing pain. Waiting until you’re experiencing discomfort typically means you waited too long. A lot of dental issues need to be repaired well before you start experiencing any symptoms. With regular teeth checkups, we can intercept any potential issues before they begin causing you any pain. Not to mention, catching dental issues early will lead to less expensive and less extensive treatment. You would never dream of neglecting regular routine health visits, but somehow, dental visits are easily disregarded for younger children. Children should get routine dental checkups from the time those first teeth start to emerge, but why is pediatric dental care so important? Take a look at some of the biggest reasons for seeing a pediatric dentist in Mountain View is so important. Children Get Screened for Oral Health Concerns Just like adults, children can have issues with their oral health. Every child should visit a dentist at least one time before their first birthday to make sure their developing smile is healthy and there are no concerns with their oral health. During the regular childhood dental exams with a pediatric dentist, children will be screened for: Signs of gum disease Signs of childhood dental caries Signs of problems with tooth spacing and alignment Signs of issues with the structures of the mouth Early diagnosis of any of these problems helps thwart small issues from growing bigger as your child gets older. About 56 percent of parents believe their child should only see a dentist after they are two years old, but the sooner you get started, the better. Your child should see a dentist twice a year, every year for a checkup and routine oral hygiene visits. Children Learn Good Oral Hygiene Habits Early On Regular dental visits encourage a child to be more vigilant about the health of their teeth. The dentist will show you and your child proper brushing and flossing habits, teach you about the best oral care products for children, and overall make your child more comfortable about tending to oral health habits for the rest of their life. Our Mountain View pediatric dentist works really hard to make sure our young patients are comfortable in the dentist’s chair. Your child will get: Direct attention from a pediatric professional Individualized treatment based on their specific needs and your concerns A relaxed environment that is welcoming to younger patients Some children are naturally anxious about dental treatment, but the more often they are exposed to treatment, the less intimidating the care becomes. Therefore, getting started early when your child is young helps your little one grow accustomed to dental care at the dentist. Children Avoid Problems with Tooth Decay By the time children reach the age at which they are starting Kindergarten, about 40 percent of them will have some level of tooth decay according to the Centers for Disease Control . Between 2013 and 2016, at least 16.9 percent of children between the ages of 5 and 19 had untreated dental caries. Problems with tooth decay can start early in a child’s life, and these issues can affect the health of their smile for the long term without proper dental care. Children with untreated dental decay in their baby teeth can: Suffer from pain due to their decaying teeth Develop dangerous infections in the teeth and soft tissues of the mouth Lose baby teeth too early and create problems with speech development Be more at risk of decay in permanent teeth Be more at risk of gum disease and other illnesses Feel self-conscious about sharing their smile with others Getting regular pediatric dental checkups will ensure that a child’s teeth are properly assessed for any signs of dental caries, which is basically dental decay. When a dentist spots these issues in your child’s mouth, they will work with you to develop a plan to slow the progression of the condition. These plans may include changes in oral hygiene habits, more frequent visits for professional cleaning, fillings for cavities, sealants to protect the teeth from further decay, and more. Children Get to Achieve the Best, Healthiest Smile A nice smile is something that is oh-so-important as an adult, but it is also an important thing for a child for more than just aesthetic reasons or for self-confidence reasons. Whether it is issues with spacing and alignment or something else, these issues can hinder a child’s ability to: Speak clearly or form words with the proper sounds Eat and chew foods the way they should Feel confident when in social situations Early childhood dental checkups and visits that are consistent throughout a child’s life will ensure any problems that exist are immediately handled by a professional. For instance, if a child needs braces to straighten their teeth as an adolescent, regular dental visits will ensure the issue is diagnosed early and handled appropriately. Trust Your Child’s Smile to Cassara Dental in Mountain View, CA As you can see, starting your child out with routine dental visits is absolutely critical to their health, well-being, and development. What is Teeth Whitening? Teeth whitening, sometimes known as tooth whitening, is a procedure that reduces stains and discolorations while lightening the color of the teeth. You can choose to lighten upper and lower teeth, or only your upper teeth, depending on how much of your lower teeth show when you talk or smile. How does teeth whitening work? Your teeth whitening dentist in Mountain View, CA, makes an impression of your teeth in order to make a stent, which is a type of mouth guard that holds bleach against your teeth. The bleaching agent uses a bubbling action to lift stains out of your tooth enamel in the shortest time possible. You can pick up your custom bleach splints and special bleaching agent in only a day or two. Simply apply the bleaching agent onto the clear splints and, using a mirror for accuracy, place the splints onto your teeth; adjust as needed to provide full coverage over your teeth. Use a tissue to remove any bleaching agent that overflows from the splint onto your gum. Rinse plastic splints in water between uses. Wearing the splint and bleaching agent for a few hours each day will brighten your teeth by several shades without altering the structure of your teeth or affecting existing dental work in any way. Once you reach your teeth whitening goals, you will need only occasional teeth whitening treatments to maintain your bright new smile. Remember to take “before” photos prior to starting treatment; you’ll want to compare them with “after” photos taken after finishing teeth whitening treatments. The dental bleaching process used in teeth whitening corrects tooth discolorations from stains, aging, and chemical damage to teeth. The most advanced bleaching technology is safe for creating a brilliant smile. While crowns and veneers may be the only option in cases of extreme tooth discoloration, teeth whitening is a low-cost, convenient way to overcome stains and discolorations. Key Benefits of Teeth Whitening Teeth whitening provides a number of cosmetic benefits. For example, teeth whitening: Corrects brown and yellow stains on teeth Reduces the visible appearance of spots on teeth Works on patients of any age Restores brightness to bring your smile alive Is a long-lasting solution for a dull smile How do I get the best results of teeth whitening? You can improve your chances for the whitest, brightest smile possible by: Using the teeth whitening treatment the same way every day Avoiding foods with strong colorants, such as tea and curry Periodic checkups with your dentist, who will review and assess your teeth whitening progress Storing the product as directed Consulting with your dentist as needed Why not use over-the-counter products? While it may be tempting to use over-the-counter bleaching agents purchased at drug stores and pharmacies, these products may cause harm to your teeth and gums. Furthermore, they may not produce the same high quality, long-lasting teeth whitening benefits provided by teeth whitening performed by a dental professional. Just like a filling, an inlay is used to replace a small portion of the tooth. An onlay also fills a small portion of the tooth, but then it extends onto the chewing surface, wrapping over to replace one or more of the tips (cusps) of the tooth. Since inlays and onlays are usually created in a dental lab at another location as opposed to in the office during the patient’s visit, these dental restorations are referred to as indirect fillings. After the inlay or onlay is created and returns from the lab, the dentist fits and bonds it to the surface of the patient’s tooth. What is the Difference Between an Inlay, an Onlay and a Filling? An onlay covers the entire chewing surface of the tooth, including one or more cusps. An inlay is designed to fit inside the grooves of the teeth that are located within the cusps. An inlay may be used instead of a standard filling. Your dentist determines which type of restoration is most appropriate for you based on the amount of tooth structure you need replaced. Your dentist may recommend an onlay if: The tooth has extensive damage that affects at least one tip of a tooth. The biting surface of a tooth has a substantial amount of damage. Your dentist may recommend an inlay instead of a standard filling if: The damage to the tooth is extensive: If a tooth has a large filling, it typically becomes weak. The tooth is fractured, broken or decayed in an area that does not affect its cusp. The injury to the tooth does not warrant the need for a crown. Standard fillings actually weaken the structure of a tooth by up to 50 percent; whereas, inlays and onlays strengthen it. Following an inlay or onlay procedure, the treated tooth can bear up to 75 percent more chewing force, which allows these restorations to last anywhere from 10 to 30 years. What to Expect During the Office Visits for Inlays and Onlays in Mountain View, CA The inlay and onlay procedures are basically identical. Unless the dentist has a milling unit in the office, two visits are required. The First Visit During the initial dental visit, the tooth is prepared: It is during this visit that the damaged or decayed portion of the tooth is removed. The procedure: Before removing the damaged or decayed part of the tooth, local anesthesia is administered. Since inlay and onlay procedures are conservative, the dentist removes as little of the patient’s tooth structure as possible. The dentist can use a drill, air abrasion device or a dental laser to remove this material. Once the damage and decay are removed, a mold of the patient’s tooth is created. This mold is sent to the dental lab. The patient receives a temporary restoration. This temporary restoration will remain in place until the dental lab fabricates the permanent restoration and it can be bonded to the tooth; however, if the dentist has an in-office milling unit (e.g., CEREC ), the need for a temporary restoration is eliminated because the inlay or onlay can be created and bonded on the same day the mold is taken. The Second Visit The procedure: Once the permanent restoration is created and ready to place, the dentist removes the temporary restoration (if applicable) and cleans the tooth. The dentist will check the fit of the inlay or onlay before bonding it to make sure it fits properly. As long as the restoration fits properly, the dentist permanently bonds it to the tooth. For aesthetic reasons, the dentist polishes the restoration. Traditionally, due to its strength, these dental restorations were created using gold. Today, these restorations can still be made from gold; however, many patients receiving inlays and onlays in Mountain View, CA, are choosing to have their restorations made using materials like porcelain and resin. Using these materials, patients can have their restorations created in a color that closely matches the natural color of their teeth. Without teeth, you may experience sagging facial muscles, which result in sunken cheeks and otherwise make you look older than you are. Fortunately, our dentist can provide you with a custom made pair of dentures in Mountain View that will allow you to keep eat and speak in your usual fashion. Modern dentures have come a long way from their counterparts of the past and can be made to look and feel as much like your natural teeth as possible. In fact, some patients even find that dentures improve their overall appearance. Types of Dentures There are three basic types of dentures. These include: Conventional Dentures Conventional dentures are the kind that the majority of people are most familiar with. They are completely removable and can only be placed in the mouth after all remaining gum tissues have healed completely. This may take a few months. This form of dentures is only used when the patient has no remaining natural teeth. Immediate Dentures Immediate dentures are also entirely removable. Unlike conventional dentures, they can be inserted into the mouth immediately after the removal of the teeth. They can also be used as full or partial dentures. Although these are generally more expensive than their conventional counterparts, you won’t have to go through several months of being without teeth. However, it may be necessary for your dentist to realign your immediate dentures after your jaw has completely healed — bones and tissue tends to shrink as they heal. Immediate dentures are usually considered a temporary fix while waiting for conventional dentures. Partial Dentures Partial dentures are probably better known as bridges and are used when several teeth in a row have been removed. They can only work when one or more natural teeth remain in the upper or lower gums. There are two main types of partial dentures. The first is known as the ‘precision bridge,’ and this type is completely removable because it’s held in place with internal attachments. Precision bridges are also referred to by some as ‘overdentures.’ The second type of partial dentures is generally referred to as a ‘fixed bridge’ due to the fact that it’s cemented into place. Precisions are more natural-looking, but fixed bridges are more convenient. Your dental care professional can help you decide which option is best for you. Oral Care After You Get Dentures No matter what type of dentures you end up with, it will probably take you several weeks to completely get used to wearing them. For instance, they may feel loose at first until the muscles in your face adjust to holding them in place. You may also experience minor irritation and a temporary increase in saliva flow, but these problems should subside as your mouth gets used to wearing your new dentures. Keep in mind that even if you have a full set of dentures, you’ll nonetheless need to brush your gums, roof of your mouth, and tongue using a brush with soft bristles before you insert your dentures in the morning. Please feel free to contact our office for more information on dentures in Mountain View CA or with any other oral care questions you may have. The vast majority of these are non-surgical root canals. A root canal in Mountain View is a simple procedure that can preserve and save a patient’s natural teeth, preventing the need for a tooth extraction, dental bridges or implants. Indications That a Root Canal is Needed The center of each tooth is filled with “pulp,” a system of blood vessels and nerves. Cracked or chipped teeth, advanced tooth decay, or trauma to the tooth can all cause the pulp to become infected. This can lead to extreme pain in the teeth or gums, sensitivity to heat and cold, and even visible injury or swelling on the tooth. Surgical vs. Non-Surgical Root Canals A root canal in Mountain View is necessary when the pulp inside the tooth becomes infected. This often happens when a tooth is fractured. Dr. Cassara can usually spot the problem right away. But in cases where an X-ray doesn’t reveal the source of the pain, or if the infection inside the tooth has become very severe, a surgical root canal could be necessary. In a surgical root canal, the dentist makes an incision in the gums in order to access the tooth from the side. Most patients call the dentist right away when they have a cracked tooth, due to the intense pain. This is why most root canals are non-surgical ones; patients tend to call the dentist’s office before a serious infection can set in! Non-Surgical Root Canal Procedure A local anesthetic is administered to prevent pain during the procedure. Dr. Cassara will drill into the infected tooth, and then the diseased pulp will be removed. The root canal system inside the tooth is then thoroughly cleaned and sealed. Depending on the type of treatment, this can usually be achieved in one office visit. Non-surgical root canals in Mountain View have about a 90 percent success rate in patients. Patients can drive home immediately after the procedure and are able to resume normal activities immediately. Post-Root Canal Care Following a root canal procedure, you will need to schedule an appointment with a restorative dentist to complete the process. Your restorative dentist will work with you to decide on the best after-care treatment option. This will usually involve a dental crown, which “caps” the tooth and will help to preserve it for years to come without developing additional problems. Patients do need to continue to observe good dental hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing, to prevent further problems. Non-Surgical Root Canal Cost A non-surgical root canal is generally less expensive than extracting a tooth and then installing dental implants and a replacement tooth. The cost of a non-surgical root canal can vary depending on the severity damage to the tooth, as well as which tooth is affected (back molars are sometimes more difficult to access than other teeth, for example). Most dental insurance policies will cover a portion or the full cost of a root canal procedure. The important thing to remember is that you should not wait if you have an intense toothache. The sooner that Dr. Cassara can assess the problem the better the outcome is likely to be. If you have a painful chipped or cracked tooth and think you might need a root canal in Mountain View CA, contact our office right away.
