Creating a more equitable Long Beach where resources and opportunities are readily available to the Latino community is continuously top of mind. It is engrained into almost every aspect of the organization and a large reason why Centro CHA exists today. The organization’s most valuable asset is the annual Latino Economic Report. In partnership with California State University, Long Beach, Centro CHA is able to dive deep into the data of the community. As a direct result, Centro CHA is able to design strategic programming and continuously fill in the gaps. This tool has proven to be effective not just for the organization, but a vital piece of information to Centro CHA’s partners and other local government agencies who have viewed this as an integral part of the programming. Committed to providing immigrant integration services to the Greater Long Beach community, Centro CHA has established a wraparound support system that touches on all of the major needs of the immigration journey. From the start, the client is paired with a case manager who will work with them directly to assess their needs and design the best path forward. Navigating through immigration documents can be daunting and intimidating and case managers work to demystify the process and ensure they receive the proper roadmap to success. Centro CHA also provides presentations, consultations, and training to community members and stakeholders about the naturalization process of becoming a United States Citizen. Currently, Centro CHA does not have legal counsel on staff but has established strong relationships with immigration lawyers that have a deep understanding of the community and their needs. Application assistance services are provided through monthly large-scale workshops, as well as via individual appointments during office hours. The Centro CHA team is here to answer questions and on financial obligations and in certain cases can provide financial support or fee waiver if applicable. Initiatives Initiatives ESL & Civics Classes ESL & Civics Classes Once the applicant has gone through the process and is ready to be interviewed, Centro CHA works with these individuals to properly prepare them. These cohorts are often taught by professors or professionals in the field including some from a trust Centro CHA partner, Cerritos Community College.  Centro CHA is a proud member of the Immigration Integration Task Force- a Los Angeles-based network of immigrant-rights organizations—that is spearheaded by the California Community Foundation, and NALEO Educational Fund (National Association of Latino Elected Officials). To ensure that each youth seeking services receives the right path to success, Centro CHA pairs them with a case manager and immediately assesses their needs from the first conversation. From there, the case manager can determine which program is best suited to help them achieve their goals. This one-on-one relationship provides accountability for the youth and a familiar face as they navigate through the process. Centro CHA also offers a variety of in-house, educational support to help those who are looking to further their education or receive their GED. A case manager will work with the individual to prepare the proper paperwork and or enroll them in GED preparation courses. Post Secondary Education assistance is also available for students looking to further their education and enroll in college or university. Case managers can present financial assistance options such as FAFSA or look for other ways to support their financial needs. To enroll in a GED preparation course please visit our office. Reentry & Diversion Those who enter Centro CHA’s diversionary program typically do not enter a plea when they come to court (at their arraignment) after being arrested. Instead, they are literally diverted to the Centro CHA’s to enroll in our programs and are often required to go through a job training program, complete community service, enroll in school or be placed in our onsite GED preparation classes. In some programs, defendants plead guilty but the plea isn’t formally entered into the court system; the plea is erased upon successful completion of the program. Programs can last from six months to a year or more. Diversionary programs also emphasize counseling, treatment, and behavior modification over punitive measures. Often, participants must agree to attend classes and vocational training, participate in individual or group therapy or counseling, perform community service work, make restitution to any victim, and pay fines. When participants successfully complete the program, the case returns to court and the matter is dismissed or a lesser offense is charged. If the case is dismissed, usually the record of the arrest is not sealed or otherwise destroyed, however. In some situations, Centro CHA can assist participants in the additional step of seeking to expunge, or seal, the record of the case. If participants do not complete diversion or are discharged from the program for failure to adhere to its terms (or for subsequent criminal behavior), the case returns to court for prosecution. At that time the defendant must enter a plea of guilty or not guilty. Defendants typically pay for their diversion program, by paying restitution to the court.
