What makes this school truly special for us is the incredible classroom teachers. Ms. Sonali and Ms. Stacey in the PreK classroom really bring personal warmth and just the right amount of playfulness to the class, creating an environment where our daughter feels safe, supported, and free to be herself—all while maintaining high academic standards so that she is challenged and engaged every day. They notice her strengths, support her struggles, and give us thoughtful, personalized feedback that comes from their careful observations of her every day. Having them as her teachers has been such a gift for our daughter and for our family. While the school maintains high academic standards and a structured learning environment, it also nurtures students’ social awareness and encourages them to work thoughtfully and collaboratively with their classmates. Our daughter has always loved reading, and the school’s fantastic phonics program has helped her become a confident, enthusiastic reader. That combination of devoted, caring teachers, a strong academic foundation, and a focus on social growth has made a huge difference in her confidence and joy in learning.

My son has had a great experience in the 4’s program at Challenger School Middlefield. His teachers have truly been a blessing in my child’s early learning journey. Their classroom is warm and engaging. I want to give Ms. Sonali an extra shout out for all the patience she has shown my son. She encourages his love of learning and his confidence has grown exponentially. Everyday he comes home asking to do science experiments and sharing what he has learned that day. I would also like to acknowledge and show some appreciation for the program director Ms. Sharon. She is kind and helpful. She goes above and beyond to make the campus fun during events. I highly recommend the preschool program at Challenger School Middlefield.

My child loves challenger@Palo Alto very much! She has learned so much during her time in the Pre-K program, both academically and socially. Every day she comes home excited to share what she did. She especially enjoys playing with her friends and has built wonderful relationships there. The teachers, Ms.Madhu and Ms.Nupur, are incredibly kind, patient and friendly. They create a warm, nurturing environment where children feel safe, supported, and encouraged to grow. they truly care about each child’s development and happiness.

Our family has had a wonderful experience with Challenger School. My children have either graduated from Challenger or are still attending, and the consistency of their positive experiences over the years speaks volumes about the school’s quality. One of the things I appreciate most is Challenger’s well structured and academically focused curriculum. The program prepares students extremely well for the next stages of their educational journey. Challenger does not just emphasize depth in core subjects; it also offers impressive breadth. Students explore hands on science experiments, speech and public speaking, art, computer programming, and many more. The variety of subjects keeps learning engaging and helps students develop confidence across multiple disciplines. The school year also offers more instructional days than local public school. The teachers and staff are caring, attentive, and genuinely invested in each student’s success. Educators like Mr. Buccellato, Ms. Outhabong, and Ms. Madhavi stand out as some of the best we have ever encountered, though we have been fortunate enough to meet many wonderful teachers at Challenger. Their professionalism and dedication create a learning environment where students feel supported and motivated, which is one of the reasons my kids are excited to go to school every morning. My older daughter, now a high school junior, often reflects on how well Challenger prepared her for a competitive academic environment. She consistently feels confident and well equipped compared to peers coming from various public feeder schools. That foundation really has made a meaningful difference in her high school experience. Overall, I highly recommend Challenger School to families seeking a well rounded, academically strong, and positive learning environment. Our experience has been outstanding, and I am grateful for the solid educational foundation Challenger has provided for my children.

So do we. And we see results in students’ skills in math, reading, composition, public speaking, self-management, and independent thinking. We also see results in standardized test scores. Standardized test results are neither the only nor the most important measure of success, but they do measure students’ comparative academic skill sets. The results are useful in evaluating and demonstrating students’ ability to apply knowledge to largely concrete problems. On the 2025 Iowa Assessments, a nationally standardized test, Challenger kindergartners’ average percentile rank was 98. Eighth grade students’ average rank was 99. That means that Challenger’s average kindergartner outscored 98 out of 100 IOWA test takers at the same grade level—and that Challenger’s average eighth grader outscored 99. The results against the private school group of test takers—expected to be an academically stronger group—are similarly impressive. The IOWA results show a significant advantage for Challenger kindergartners. The results are similar in all grades—some a bit lower and some a bit higher, but all far ahead of the norm. Challenger students learn to reason and critically evaluate ideas independently. They also learn to find joy and self-worth through achievement. These are things that standardized assessments do not measure but that are critically important to a child’s success in life. Our students are also high achievers outside of school, and we enjoy seeing and showcasing their achievements in areas as diverse as academics, martial arts, team sports, dance, art, music, entrepreneurship, technology, and many more. The Challenger advantage is for life, and the path to high achievement begins early. Start early and start right at Challenger School. National Blue Ribbon School The Challenger School Berryessa California campus earned the National Blue Ribbon School award in 2021. With this award, the U.S. Department of Education recognizes Challenger for being an “Exemplary High Performing” school. This award acknowledges the achievements of our educators and students and the strength of Challenger’s exemplary curriculum and proven teaching methods utilized at all campuses. What our customers say about us Previous Slide Next Slide “ We couldn't be happier with the quality of education our children are receiving at Challenger, and, even better, they couldn't be happier either! Challenger has instilled in them a love of learning that will set the foundation throughout their formal education, and we're amazed at the advanced material they have readily mastered and at how quickly they have advanced. Perhaps best of all, though, is how eager they are to go to school each day, and how much they enjoy practicing and building on what they have learned outside of the classroom. Challenger has helped boost their academic confidence, has fostered their creative expression, and has set the standard for what we believe a child can achieve. Katie S. Farmington Campus, Utah “ Challenger excels not only at setting a strong foundation in reading, math, and critical thinking but more importantly at instilling a true love of learning. My daughters are excited to go to school each morning and are brimming with pride to share their new knowledge at the end of each day. The teachers and staff are warm and inviting, helping each child reach her fullest potential in fun and engaging ways. Especially at such a young age it is important not just for children to master necessary skills but to foster their ability and creativity as independent thinkers. Challenger makes learning fun! Emily A. Avery Ranch Campus, Texas “ I had recently transferred to Challenger from the Los Altos School District, due to the new Common Core changes at my public school. I have already found that the teachers are smart, organized, and supportive of my learning. The curriculum is clear, concise and informative. Challenger really stands out to me and is a great school and I am glad I have chosen to move here for middle school. I have learned more at Challenger than ever before and feel ensured that I will be prepared for high school. Mica H. Middlefield Campus, California “ Challenger is an outstanding school. It focuses on tried and true teaching methods, and wastes little effort on discipline, scheduling, or methods, as these are firmly in place. The school then rushes forward teaching the kids all the basics and beyond, so that the kids come away with confidence, and satisfaction of having learned the material, and also then being able to think for themselves in regard to the material learned. John W. Traverse Mountain Campus, Utah “ I have said over and over that it is a shame that all children in the United States cannot get the education that Challenger provides! The world would be a better place! Margaret Z. Round Rock Campus, Texas Student Work Previous Slide Next Slide This first grade student shows advanced perspective by depicting a fence that is upright and actually leaves the frame. Our students have loads of fun along the way! Challenger offers both half-day and all-day summer programs. In our summer program, uniforms are not required. Preschool Adventureland Each week, students take an imaginary trip to a new and exciting place. Preschoolers love exploring the land of make-believe during Storyland Week. Out in Space Week introduces students to planets, black holes, stars, and astronauts. During Adventureland’s fun, themed explorations, preschoolers also learn phonics, numbers, science, art, music, and more, keeping concepts fresh for returning Challenger students while introducing them to new students. Kindergarten Prep This preschool summer program aims to prepare children to enter kindergarten. The format follows the same imaginative, fun Adventureland themes as the preschool program, but the academic skills are more advanced. Students work on handwriting skills as well as math and reading foundations. Kindergarten Challenger’s summer kindergarten is for children who will be entering first grade in the fall. Students review the irregular vowel families and continue to apply rules of mechanics as they write their own stories. They enjoy the themes and fantasy fun of Challenger Adventureland while extending their skills and self-reliance. Elementary Our traditional morning elementary program focuses on the basics of reading, spelling, writing, and mathematics using our proven teaching methods. It is designed to review and solidify previously taught concepts. Active drills unique to Challenger give students the opportunity to move while learning things that must be memorized. Afternoon classes feature arts and crafts, music, geography, sports, drama, and scientific discovery. Middle School Challenger’s middle school summer classes are designed to increase reading fluency and comprehension, reinforce writing skills, and improve understanding of mathematical concepts. One session is devoted to reading and composition with activities and games. The other session builds pre-algebra and algebra skills. Parents may choose between these two programs or sign their children up for both. Challenger summer programs are academically beneficial and fun! Our Berryessa campus in California received the National Blue Ribbon award in 2021. We congratulate the administration, staff, and students for successfully demonstrating the effectiveness of the exceptional curriculum and proven teaching methods that are utilized at all Challenger campuses. The National Blue Ribbon School award acknowledges and validates the hard work of Challenger students—who must consistently rank in the top 15% across multiple academic subjects—and educators for attaining exemplary achievement. The award recognizes Challenger as a model for effective school practices in curriculum and instruction, student and family engagement, school leadership, and academic success. What is Challenger's curriculum/course of study? Challenger emphasizes the bedrock of knowledge: reading, composition, math, history, and logic. We promote individual and independent thinking and teach traditional American history and values. Learn more . How do Challenger students rank against other private schools? Challenger students’ standardized test scores not only surpass the national average by a phenomenal margin, but they also rank well above other private school test takers. Learn more . How can parents communicate with teachers and staff? Please call the campus Headmaster for information or to arrange a conference with your child's teacher. How do you ensure that Challenger teachers are effective? Challenger teachers are carefully tested, evaluated, and coached on an ongoing basis. We look for teachers who are well-educated, have mastery of their subjects, and have a natural love for children. We then ensure that our teachers utilize our proven teaching methods in the classroom. In all subjects, teachers help students further develop their natural ability to identify essential similarities among seemingly different things. Teachers acknowledge students as they demonstrate their ability to do so correctly and independently. What happens after Challenger? How does a Challenger education impact graduates' future successes? Most Challenger graduates go on to accelerated high school programs and then to distinguished colleges and universities. No matter where graduates go, they have the foundation and thinking abilities that allow them to pursue any endeavor they wish. I heard that Challenger is very structured—don’t children learn in different ways? It is true that there are differences in how children respond to specific subjects and lessons. Some succeed easily in math; for others, writing comes naturally. But focusing on learning differences distracts from the essential similarity in the way human minds work. Our minds classify information. We incorporate this fact into our effective teaching methods, which help even the youngest minds identify essential similarities among different things. As children learn to recognize patterns and apply principles on their own, our teachers respond with praise for their achievement. Our teachers use Challenger’s proven, comprehensive method so that students learn how to think clearly and find joy and self-worth through achievement. How does Challenger handle student behavior problems? The core of behavior management at Challenger is to require the student to recognize and successfully accept responsibility for his behavior so that we can together develop strategies to correct the behavior. Do you offer help for students who are behind or who struggle academically? At the discretion of the Headmaster, and in close coordination with teachers and parents, elementary students who demonstrate a need to review, practice, or learn foundational concepts may be enrolled in our Basic Keys group. Does Challenger follow Common Core or other state education mandates? No, Challenger School does not follow Common Core mandates. As an independent private school, Challenger has always had a challenging curriculum, much of which is proprietary. Our students achieve far beyond state minimum requirements. Each year, our students take the IOWA standardized test, which is an effective indicator of how our students compare on a national scale. Do you offer child care before and after school for preschool and elementary students? Extended Classtime is available for kindergarten–grade 8 students between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Half-day kindergarten students may enroll in the extended session adjacent to their program. Extended Classtime is structured and organized. Activities vary and may include games, crafts, robotics, and foreign languages as well as outside play, homework time, and snack time. Preschool students enrolled in all-day programs may arrive as early as 7 a.m. and stay as late as 6 p.m. at no additional cost. Is Challenger a charter school? Challenger School is not a charter school; Challenger School is a private school. Charter schools are not private schools; charter schools are public schools. The fundamental difference is this: private schools depend upon the funding they generate (typically from tuition), while public schools (including charter schools) are created, funded, and maintained by public funds (money provided by the government). Charter schools may give parents a sense of local control. But in the end, charter schools, because they receive state funding, are subject to the same public school mandates that often lead to poor academic performance (as demonstrated in standardized assessments). We prefer to teach children how to think rather than what to think. There are a few private schools, like Challenger, that are committed to functioning in a free market and, as a result, refuse all sources of public funds. Challenger prefers the freedom of innovating and working independently from government programs. This freedom allows us to deliver the exceptional and unique education that our customers expect and value. Challenger parents choose to pay us to educate their children the way they prefer. We acknowledge their commitment and our responsibility to deliver. Why don’t you have school libraries? To duplicate public libraries that parents have already paid for with tax dollars—and can easily access within their communities—doesn’t make fiscal sense for Challenger or our customers. We choose to avoid the significant investment, which would translate into a substantial increase in tuition—something we fervently strive to avoid. A Challenger education includes dozens of books that students read, study, and keep. Students actually begin to build their own personal libraries with the books provided by Challenger. Furthermore, we use our time with students carefully and make the most out of the short instructional time we have with them. Rather than spending valuable, scarce teaching time to have students select books for personal reading, we suggest that families manage this outside of school time. Public schools had dropped phonics in favor of the “sight method” (teaching reading by memorizing one word at a time). Imagine! Reading without phonics! Just before the birth of her fifth child, she decided to leave the comfort of the public schools and started her own preschool where she could teach phonics to children before they went to public school. “I figured that if they learned phonics in preschool, no one could take that away from them. And in the meantime, I could teach my new little daughter and teach only in the mornings.” “It was the right place at the right time,” Barbara recalled. “Rudolph Flesch’s book Why Johnny Can’t Read was a best-seller. Concerned parents in the rapidly growing Silicon Valley wanted their children to learn to read with phonics.” In Barbara’s first class, there were only six paying students. Her intention to teach half a day did not last long, however. Two years later, as fascinated parents witnessed their children singing songs and bubbling with excitement about learning, the tiny preschool had grown to 100 half-day preschool students with 100 students waiting for admission. Challenger has expanded slowly in order to maintain high standards. Challenger now has 27 campuses in five western states serving more than 10,000 preschool through eighth grade students annually. Barbara was the very active and involved CEO of Challenger School until she passed away in 2012 at age 81. Her example continues to inspire employees to achieve Challenger's mission. --> Challenger School celebrated its 60 th anniversary in 2023. Year after year, Challenger students embrace challenge and find joy and self-worth through achievement thanks to our focused mission, proven teaching methods, excellent teachers and staff, and supportive parents. View Details Preschool This is where it all begins! Challenger preschoolers start early and start right! Our exceptional preschool programs lay the foundation for our students’ future learning. Challenger preschoolers enjoy an effective mix of music, reading, math, art, drama, social relating time, science, and physical activities that aim to improve small and large motor skills. In Challenger’s uniquely fun and academic preschool, children learn in challenging, but attainable, steps, and they begin to experience the joy of achievement as they employ their newly acquired knowledge and skills. Even our youngest preschoolers begin to gain self-worth through achievement, and we encourage parents to support this important development. We are careful not to do for a child what she can do for herself, lest we dampen her independence and her confidence in the strength of her own mind. Our curriculum channels a child's insatiable thirst for discovery and helps improve her focus and concentration—skills necessary to excel in life. Come see what our students are able to achieve! View Details Kindergarten Challenger’s fun-filled kindergarten program challenges students and their ability to stay on task in order to optimize their success. We’ve perfected the balance between play and learning so well that our kindergartners can’t tell the difference—it’s a seamless environment of learning and fun. Our curriculum and teaching methods are designed to help students become precise thinkers and self-reliant individuals. Challenger kindergartners read stories and write their own. They solve real-life logic problems, add and subtract numbers, and begin to understand fractional parts. Our kindergarten students radiate confidence and happiness! This confidence, in part, is what propels them to think for themselves—questioning everything—and to achieve well beyond other children their age. View Details First Grade Challenger first graders can confidently diagram simple sentences, solve story problems, make analogies, identify animal classes, and recognize landforms. Because our teachers present concepts in a logically ordered sequence and demonstrate how each new idea is connected to previous learning with observable facts, our students learn to discover and make new connections on their own. Challenger first graders love to learn! View Details Second Grade Challenger second graders are able to label place value to millions, read novels, diagram compound predicates, draw landscapes, and identify the stages in a plant’s life cycle. Because our students are learning and succeeding, they approach school with exuberance! View Details Third Grade Challenger School’s curriculum helps students gain the ability to think clearly, question, and reason. As a result, Challenger third graders can write multi-paragraph compositions, explain how Roman ideas about government influenced America’s Founding Fathers, write computer programs to create graphics, draw and label the layers of the earth, find the perimeter of complex figures, and much, much more! They take pride in their abilities and delight in increasing their knowledge and skills as they move into advanced subject matter. View Details Fourth Grade By fourth grade, Challenger students are speeding along in their education, becoming more and more skilled and self-assured. Because of our emphasis on conceptual learning and critical thinking, Challenger fourth graders understand the reason for the process of dividing fractions, distinguish fact from opinion by basing their thoughts on observable facts, explain the causes and effects of the American Civil War, describe what factors impact Earth’s tilt, draw conclusions about fictional characters from their actions, and deliver speeches with poise and power. Challenger fourth graders know that their success is in their own hands! Taking responsibility for their actions and performance leads to independence and self-respect. View Details Fifth Grade In fifth grade, we continue to emphasize independent reasoning skills, resulting in our students’ exceptional academic performance and success at pursuing life. By introducing concepts in a sequence that allows the student to discover the truth instead of being given answers to memorize, we promote our students’ enthusiasm for learning. Challenger fifth graders are able to make inferences, organize ideas in outlines, program computer animations, describe cycles and changes in ecosystems, distinguish between a democracy and a republic, use and cite sources in research, subtract fractions with different denominators, and so much more. View Details Sixth Grade As sixth graders, students are now part of Challenger’s top-notch middle school program! Because they have experienced both rigor and success in previous grades, they transition easily to middle school. Sixth graders have multiple teachers who specialize in individual subjects. Sixth grade studies include higher-level concepts and activities such as writing in active rather than passive voice; solving problems using measures of central tendencies like mean, median, and mode; evaluating the validity of arguments; modeling the Earth with globes and maps; interpreting the mood of a piece of music; and examining the effects of colonization and imperialism on world history. Challenger students take pride in their intelligence and accomplishments! View Details Seventh Grade Challenger seventh graders are fearless scholars! They approach even demanding assignments with self-confidence since they have been taught how to look at the relationships between things to find connections to what they already know. They are able to easily incorporate new learning because the new learning builds on already-acquired knowledge such as what factors influence patterns of heredity; how to recognize and avoid errors in logic; what events led up to the principle of the Monroe Doctrine; when it is appropriate to use standard and nonstandard English; and what can happen when illusion supplants reality, as in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Our students attain a high degree of mastery of the traditional subjects, preparing them for a productive life. View Details Eighth Grade In their final year at Challenger, eighth graders study topics that many students don’t get to until college! They independently apply the concepts they have been taught to solve two-column geometry proofs, examine the corrupting effect of power in Shakespeare’s Macbeth, spike a volleyball, program arrays to store a collection of data, explain the circumstances that lead to inflation, correct dangling modifiers, and more. Challenger eighth graders exude confidence knowing they have bright futures ahead of them because they know with certainty that they have the tools to thrive and achieve in life! View Details Extended Classes Most Challenger campuses offer an extended class program (7 a.m.–6 p.m.) before and after regular school hours for kindergarten through eighth grade students. Some even require payment for the entire year. We teach our students that justice is granting and taking only what is earned, and we strive to operate Challenger School in a just manner. That's why we charge a daily rate for days your child is enrolled. For example, if your child starts on the 15th, your tuition begins on the 15th. Conversely, if you withdraw your child on the 15th, your tuition ends on the 15th. An annual tuition deposit secures a student’s placement and serves as a commitment to the next year of education. The non-refundable deposit initiates a process for Challenger to plan staffing and purchase resources for the enrolled student. It is applied to the first month’s tuition payment of the applicable academic year. To preserve our independence, we do not accept public funds. However, as a non-profit entity, we accept private, tax-deductible donations from those wishing to contribute to Challenger's educational mission. At Challenger, an application fee and tuition fund your child's education. We don't require any additional money, time, or service commitments. On-site, in-person interviews and evaluations help determine the appropriate program for each child. New kindergarten through eighth-grade applicants must take a placement test. Contact the office or click below to schedule a campus visit. Apply Now --> Schedule A Tour APPLICATION PROCESS Enrollment applications are accepted year-round. Contact a campus to request an online application; submit early to ensure consideration before classes are filled. In order for a submitted online application to be processed, the following must be completed: read the Challenger School Policies: Handbook for Parents sign the enrollment agreements and necessary forms pay an application fee and tuition deposit ACCEPTANCE Parents will be notified of acceptance and student placement via written notification. Class placement is based on several factors, including scholastic expectations, student motivation, and comportment. Testing or submission of an application does not guarantee a child’s acceptance. CONTINUOUS ENROLLMENT Continuous enrollment eliminates the hassle of enrolling every year. When a student enrolls at Challenger, he or she will be automatically re-enrolled each year until graduation or withdrawal, as long as the student meets Challenger’s academic and comportment standards. Continuous enrollment offers the security and benefit of priority status as well as a discounted tuition rate for returning kindergarten through eighth-grade students. Plus, there are no application fees for academic-year programs. Our Philosophy | Prepare, Teach, Lead, & Inspire Children | Challenger School parent login --> about history mission and philosophy positive results testimonials FAQs admissions tuition uniforms locations california idaho nevada texas utah curriculum overview preschool k-8th grade extended classtime summer program news and events calendar newsletters videos events articles Student Achievement Press Releases parent portal schedule a tour Mission and Philosophy By the Strength of Their Own Thinking Mission Statement Our mission is to prepare children to become self-reliant, productive individuals; to teach them to think, speak, and write with clarity, precision, and independence; to lead them to recognize and value their individuality and unalienable rights; and to inspire them to embrace challenge and find joy and self-worth through achievement. Why We Do What We Do Our mission statement was written with a view of preparing children for life. But the traits we hope to develop in children are the same traits ( self-reliance , self-worth , honesty , rationality , integrity , justice , productivity ) we hope to find in our peers and associates. It is no surprise, then, that our mission statement applies not only to our work in the classroom, but also to how we manage ourselves and interact with our customers and coworkers. Our curriculum is designed to be consistent with the principles behind our mission statement. We expect these values to be taught and reinforced in the classroom and in our classroom management practices. We do not prescribe what our personnel must think or do in their personal lives, but we do expect them to manage and teach in a manner consistent with Challenger values. It is our goal to operate every aspect of Challenger School in a manner consistent with our mission and the principles on which it is based. It is our hope that publishing and discussing Challenger beliefs and values will inspire all those associated with us to consider the importance of ideas in their lives. Ideas define our purposes, motives, and practices of living. Without our own ideas, which we take seriously, we drift on whatever current others may sweep us into. Self-Reliance—independence Self-reliance is thinking and doing for oneself. Self-Worth—proper respect for one’s own worth Self-worth is the recognition that you begin life as good and have the potential to be great. It is also the satisfaction that you get from living up to that potential. Honesty—recognizing and accepting only reality Honesty is recognizing and accepting reality and refusing to pretend otherwise to oneself or to others. Rationality—living by reason Rationality is the use of reason (as opposed to emotion or whim) to discover knowledge and guide our decisions. It is the use of reason to form and evaluate opinions; identify value, virtue, and vice; and choose correct courses of action. Integrity—being one with your principles Integrity is acting in a manner consistent with your moral principles. Justice—give and take the earned Justice is granting to others that which they deserve and taking only that which we earn. Productivity Productivity is creating life-enhancing value. Starting Early and Starting Right A seamless blend of learning and fun... In preschool, teaching effectively is arguably more important than at any other time in a child’s education because it is when the child’s educational foundation is established. A key to Challenger’s success is its ability to blend fun and learning in early education—when children are curious, eager to learn, and when their minds are developing rapidly. Consider how we approach arithmetic with our preschoolers: We teach preschoolers that numbers are symbols representing quantities. We sing songs and play games that supplement our teaching and ask questions like, “If you have 2 cookies and your friend brings you one more, how many would you have?” Reinforcing this connection between numbers and real items forges an understanding of numbers that simply reciting numbers in sequence cannot create. A child taught to count to 25 and a Challenger preschooler may both demonstrate counting to 25. But their confidence, understanding of numbers (such as the 2 meaning two groups of ten, and the 5 five ones), and their readiness for higher concepts will be very different. At Challenger School, we use singing, dancing, and games to help teach the core subjects and to make and keep learning fun and interesting. Observe a Challenger preschool class, and you’ll struggle to find the line between learning and fun! Self-Worth Cannot Be Given A healthy sense of self-worth is very important to children’s development because a child possessing it knows that he is good, has great potential, and can learn and do many things of his choosing. Because they know self-worth is so important, many educators or educational institutions will suggest that they can give a child self-worth. Impossible! That is like saying to a friend that you will give her a rich and rewarding relationship with her spouse. We do not give your child self-worth—it cannot be given. But as we teach a child proper thinking methods, he soon discovers the joy of using the strength of his mind and his capacity to do and achieve. His self-worth starts becoming anchored in him and not on the unreliable favor, approval, or praise given by others. So while we don’t and can’t say that we give children self-worth, we do help them develop it for themselves. And there is no shortcut, no way around the work. At Challenger School, your child can gain a healthy sense of self-worth, but he will earn it, own it, and take it with him when he leaves. We’ve been incredibly impressed with our son’s progress in preschool. Alex has been engaged and challenged in the best possible way; his confidence has increased greatly and he loves school. As a parent, it’s gratifying to see our child excited about reading and math and science and keen to show off his new skills. Amber H. Preschool I wanted to share a conversation that I had with my daughter last night. When I arrived home from work Scarlett told me all about her day, where she learned about the planets and the solar system. She proceeded to ask me the following questions: "Did you know that Mars is red, and that Jupiter has a hurricane on the planet the size of Earth? Did you know that Uranus is the coldest planet, and that Mercury is closet to the sun? Also, Mama, Pluto isn't really a planet, it's a dwarf planet." Needless to say, I was blown away. I am so happy that we are at Challenger and have had such wonderful teachers along the way. Kudos specifically to Ms. Adrianne on this most recent lesson, but my husband and I could not be happier with the overall structure of Challenger and the information that Scarlett is able to absorb every day. Lindsey H. Preschool The greatest benefit my children have received from a Challenger School education is their ability to think clearly, speak confidently, and work independently. Shanthi Y. Preschool We initially enrolled in a 3-day program for preschool (3-year-old) but in no time, my daughter loved the school, and we enrolled in 5 full-day program. Sailatha K. Second Grade We are very happy to be part of such a great system that instills right values and helps kids build their confidence, character, and creativity. Our kids have been getting exposed to a great academic curriculum, which helps them to uncover their strengths and capabilities. Challenger Parent (for 11 years) Eighth Grade Challenger has fully fulfilled the goals detailed in their mission. In her academic journey from preschool to eighth grade, my daughter has not only embodied and learned the value of honesty, integrity, respect, confidence, self-reliance, self-worth, and independence but also learned to think, speak, and write confidently and knowledgeably. Challenger teachers have helped her understand and recognize her rights and the importance of protecting those rights. They have helped her to become a critical thinker who can analyze the world around her. She has learned to look at everything with an open mind. I very much appreciate all Challenger School has bestowed on my daughter as she gets ready to graduate as one confident Challenger student! Do you have your own experience to share? The time is structured, and activities are organized for the maximum benefit of students. Since reading is essential for future success in all other subjects, Challenger uses phonics to teach students to read. Rather than memorizing every word (using the whole word method, taught at many preschools), Challenger students, using phonics, learn how letter sounds blend together to form words. The first three letters a preschooler learns are S, M, and A. When a young preschooler first sounds out the word SAM after learning just these three, you should see how thrilled he is! We then use every new letter to teach him to read new words everywhere he goes. Our preschoolers use phonics concepts to sound out words without guessing. As a result, Challenger students are confident in their reading abilities and are ready to tackle new subjects. Our three-year-old preschoolers read simple sentences, and our four-year-olds read little books. Math Challenger uses delightful songs and activities to help students remember numbers and geometric shapes. Students learn to count forward and backward and recognize place value. We teach them to understand the concept of quantity—that numbers represent how many or how much of something—by relating it to items they see or touch. They practice arithmetic using addition and subtraction story problems about familiar things. Science, Logic, and Historical/ Cultural Insights Exploring exciting things like dinosaurs, insects, weather, plants, and human senses helps fuel students’ natural desire to understand their world. Presentations and experiments in these areas also help students improve their ability to focus, concentrate, and stay on task. Students are encouraged to ask questions and use reason to understand concepts and make conclusions. Throughout the year, they also learn about explorers, holidays, customs, and presidents. Music Challenger strives to teach students to be confident, musically educated performers and listeners. Preschoolers learn to sing with proper vocal technique, play simple percussion instruments, and dance with partners. They learn to feel the tempo of different rhythms as well as the beat, and they are encouraged to freely express themselves and use their imaginations with the music. Twice a year—at Christmas and in the spring—classes put on performances showcasing their musical and intellectual prowess. Art Challenger preschoolers become able to look at animals, people, and buildings to see the basic shapes that visually compose them. Students learn fundamental skills needed in art expression—cutting, gluing, painting, drawing, and sculpting. Large/Small Motor Skills Our preschool curriculum includes activities such as working with manipulatives, performing imaginative finger plays, zipping and buttoning garments, and cutting with scissors. These activities are specifically designed to help students strengthen small muscles and improve dexterity. To help develop hand-eye coordination, our students toss and catch beanbags. We also teach proper pencil grip. Students learn to form numbers and letters and write their own names. We also encourage the development of large motor skills by engaging students in activities that promote balance, spatial awareness, rhythm, coordination, aerobic fitness, hand-eye coordination, and muscle tone. Our curriculum incorporates dance and drama in addition to traditional PE skills like using a balance beam and tossing and catching balls. We consider a study of science, speech, literature, geography, music, art, and physical education to be imperative to a well-rounded academic education. We also teach phonics, sentence diagramming, and penmanship—tried and true practices that other schools often neglect. As Challenger students gain an early and thorough mastery of Challenger’s curriculum, they are well prepared for advanced studies and learning at an accelerated pace. We don’t teach concepts in isolation in any subject—topics or skills mentioned in specific grades are learned and reinforced at multiple levels and across subjects. Likewise, projects and events like Science Fair, Young Author, and Speech Festival span multiple grades (kindergarten–8th) and annually provide students with growth opportunities in the skills the activities promote. See detailed grade-level descriptions for each subject via the curriculum page. Unlike charter or other public schools that are funded by taxes and thus bound by government mandates on education, we have the freedom to do what is right for our students and use proven, effective curriculum and methods to teach and challenge them. For example, we teach students to base their thinking on observable facts and to honestly evaluate and then integrate or reject new ideas as they discover them but not to allow contradictions. This is a key component of our effective teaching and helps students learn to think for themselves. We sometimes introduce errors in the lessons to teach the students the essential responsibility to evaluate and validate all that they choose to accept as truth. Our purpose is to promote intellectual independence instead of obedience and learning by rote. Watch our founder, Barbara Baker, teaching and gently guiding a class of preschoolers. Of equal importance to our academic instruction is behavior management. The first cannot succeed without the second. We teach our students to manage themselves, in part, by not shielding them from the consequences of their bad actions nor from the steps required for proper and just resolution. As students develop more control over their emotions, social interactions, and mental focus, their academics and behavior generally improve. As students learn to respect themselves, classmates, teachers, and their shared purpose for being at Challenger, they all enjoy a more positive, focused, and productive educational experience. The best way to see the efficacy of Challenger School’s curriculum is by coming in for a tour and experiencing the excitement, focus, fun, and achievement for yourself.
