How far do free speakers travel? I’m in the suburbs of Chicago, will speakers come to me? Most likely yes. The time and distance each speaker is willing to travel depends on the speaker. Some travel anywhere, others have limits. You’ll find this out when you talk together. Please be understanding if the speaker is unable to accept your request due to time of travel. Some speakers are also willing to meet virtually. Why does a speaker present for free? Everyone’s different, but essentially the speakers are good people who give back. Others give talks, because they like to speak in public, teach, or be better known in the community. Does Free Speakers Chicago vet or screen speakers before they join? Yes, we have a new speaker review team that reads each application carefully. We’re always on the lookout for topics or speakers who don’t fit the model of community service or are just too fringe with their background or topics. Can you recommend a speaker for me? We do not endorse or suggest specific speakers or topics. Speakers fill out a detailed bio, specifically so you can decide if the speaker would be a good fit for your group. Can a speaker sell stuff? What about authors? Products for sale are not appropriate. Authors may bring books to the talk, but any sales pitch needs to be extremely low key. The point of Free Speakers is to be of service and provide knowledge and education, not sales for a product or service. Are your speakers political or religious? We don’t promote any specific political or religious views. That said, we don’t discriminate against them either. Since the bureau began in 1996, we can’t remember a politician wanting to campaign via Free Speakers. Some speakers have religious overtones in their topic or speaker profile, but that is listed in the title or profile so groups understand before they make a request. How do I request a speaker? Browse for a topic that will be of interest to your group. Click on the orange “Request This Free Speech” button. Fill out the form and click submit. Your contact information is now sent to the speaker and they will contact you in the next few days. Can I request more than one speaker / topic at a time? Yes, you may request as many speakers / topics as you wish. The first time you click the “Request This Free Speech” button, you will be asked to fill out a request form. Some program chair persons request ten topics at a time in order to fill out an entire six months of programs. In fact, it’s rare for someone to request just one topic. After all, there are so many amazing topics from which to choose. You mean I have to fill out a form for each request? I often get asked the obvious question, “Why would you want to speak for free?” I think it’s a great question, especially because, as a business coach, I always teach my clients never to undervalue their talents and services that they provide to their clients. My answer to that question may surprise you, as even though I’m not getting paid directly by the groups to whom I speak, I get paid in many other ways that far exceed my normal speaking fees. Free Speakers Chicago officially launched in the Spring of 1996, with a handful of speakers. Feedback in the Chicagoland community has been exceptional and we now boast hundreds of speakers and topics available for groups. Free Speakers History The founder of FreeSpeakers.org is Ginny Richardson, president of Ginny Richardson Public Relations . From her work as a journalist and publicist, she accumulated a vast network of people including program chairmen from organizations. These folks would call and ask if she knew anyone who gave talks for one of their upcoming meetings. Ginny always recommended friends and/or colleagues who had a good topic. This very casual list of speakers grew. In the spring of 1996, Ginny sent a list of speakers in the U.S. mail to clubs, chambers, Rotary and Kiwanis groups, churches, etc. Requests began to multiply. In the summer of 1996, a Chicago Tribune writer heard about the speaker’s bureau. Her story – “Cheap talk for area groups” – ran on the front page of one of the Tribune’s sections, and within days, the little speaker’s bureau exploded. The bureau was run through fax and was truly no-cost service for all. It is a labor of love for Ginny and her team. Expanding Free Speakers into the Future with Technology As technology evolved, the speaker’s bureau outgrew the fax machine and moved to the internet. Expenses for web development, hosting, security, and ongoing maintenance increased considerably. After years of running the bureau out-of-pocket, it was decided to assess speakers a modest membership fee to cover the growing costs. There is still no charge from FreeSpeakers.org to the club or group, nor can the speaker charge the group, not even mileage. Andy Richardson, Ginny’s son, joined the project in 2002. With records starting in 2016, FreeSpeakers.org can demonstrate the trends influenced by COVID-19. The highest number of requests through the speaker’s bureau in Chicago was 1,070 in 2017, dropping in half to 582 during the pandemic in 2020. However, requests are up to 700 in 2022. In fact, some speakers have updated their topics to reflect the financial and health crises due to COVID-19, a news release stated. The community service project, FreeSpeakers.org, is a pro bono speakers bureau serving the region’s clubs and organizations for nearly 25 years. It was started in Hinsdale, IL. FreeSpeakers.org normally serves the community through live, in-person seminars and speaking engagements. Rarely do the speakers engage in virtual meetings. (more…) After some 250 gigs, Larry Bergnach retiring from the free speech circuit – Daily Southtown October 15, 2018 Larry Bergnach was giving a presentation about Riverview Park, the old Chicago amusement destination that closed in the 1960s, when an elderly man in the audience chimed in with his own memories of Riverview. The talk was at an elder care facility, and Bergnach later learned the man was in an advanced stage of Alzheimer’s disease and had not spoken at that length “on any topic for four years,” Bergnach said. Those kinds of experiences were why Bergnach, of Oak Lawn, worked the pro bono speakers circuit. “After I would do a speech, the people were so appreciative,” he said.
