Temples are sacred places where we draw nearer to our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ. Temples have been around for a long time. The Bible talks about temples in the time of Moses, Solomon, and Jesus Christ. Today, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints builds temples all over the world. Temples connect us to our families for eternity and give us peace, spiritual power, and inspiration as we prepare to eventually live with God. Find Common Questions Are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Christian? Yes! As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we believe Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Savior of the World. He loves us all more than we can imagine. We consider ourselves devoted followers of Jesus. While some of our beliefs are distinct, we believe that through His life, ministry, sacrifice, and resurrection, Jesus Christ saves us from sin, suffering, and death. Learn more about our beliefs . What are Church services like? Church service times vary from congregation to congregation. However, you can always count on one main worship service for everyone, followed by classes for children, youth, and adults. The service for everyone is called “sacrament meeting.” This meeting consists of songs, prayers, and sermons (or “talks”) given by different members of the congregation every week. But the most important part of the meeting is when we take the sacrament (which is similar to communion) to remember the Savior. Learn more about Sunday services or find a church near you. Why does The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have temples? For Latter-day Saints, a temple is different from other Church buildings. The temple is a place where Latter-day Saints receive special instruction about God and Jesus Christ. In the temple, members make eternal covenants (or promises) with God. This includes promises to keep the commandments, live the gospel of Jesus Christ, be faithful in marriage, and to help take care of each other by sharing what we have. Also, because we believe families are forever , much of the work done inside temples is to make family bonds even stronger. Marriages in the temple are performed to last eternally, not just “until death do you part.” Parents and children become eternal families in temples. Ancestors can also receive all the blessings of the temple if someone performs the sacred ordinances in their behalf and they accept that act of service. Temples are busy places! What is the Book of Mormon? The Book of Mormon is a book of inspired scripture that teaches us about God and Jesus Christ. It helps us receive direction for our personal lives and can help us feel closer to Jesus Christ. Where does the name come from? Hundreds of years ago, an ancient prophet named Mormon compiled a record of his people. They faced a lot of the same challenges that we do. And just like us, they found strength when they turned to Jesus Christ. Get an introduction to the Book of Mormon with missionaries . The Book of Mormon stands alongside the Bible as another testament of Jesus Christ and His divine mission as the Savior and Redeemer of the world. "text": "The proposed Temple for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Sunnyvale is designed to be a peaceful and welcoming place of worship. As part of the City of Sunnyvale’s rigorous approval process, our design team has completed a series of technical studies to ensure the Temple meets or exceeds all city requirements.

These studies are based on “worst-case scenario” guidelines, which assume the maximum possible use of the site, and show that there will be no significant environmental impacts. For example:

• Sustainability: The project is designed to achieve LEED Gold Certification, a globally recognized standard for environmentally responsible construction. This includes energy-efficient building systems, resource conservation, and sustainable design features that reduce the environmental footprint and enhance operational efficiency. Including Solar panels, EV Charging, Electric HVAC systems.

• Landscape: The Temple’s landscaping plan prioritizes preserving existing mature trees wherever possible. For trees that must be removed, we are committed to replacing them with more trees than are removed, enhancing the site’s greenery, and contributing to the community’s environmental quality. Additionally, the landscaping will meet LEED Gold certification requirements, utilizing water-efficient practices to conserve resources and promote sustainability.

• Building Height: The Temple’s steeple, a defining architectural feature, has been carefully designed to create minimal visual impact on the surrounding neighborhood, and complies with California state law.

• Lighting: The biology report analyzed the impact of exterior facade lighting and found minimal impact to migratory birds and other local wildlife species. Special light shields will be used to contain light to the building and within the parking area to mitigate light pollution.

• Solar/Shadow Impact Study: This analysis considers the times of day when shadows might affect neighboring solar panels, even under the most extreme conditions and does not account for existing trees that already impact affected buildings. Only one property was found to be affected more than 10% on the shortest day with the longest shadows.

• Sewer Study: The system is evaluated for a hypothetical maximum occupancy of 8,000 people on site per week, though actual use will likely be far below this, with no more than 960 individuals visiting throughout the week in smaller, steady groups.

• Hydrology Study: Using the 100-year flood volume, the onsite stormwater bioretention basin has been design to mitigate impact on the community and local infrastructure.

These requirements are standard for commercial buildings, which enable the City to evaluate the impacts a proposed building may have. While the Temple has been designed to meet these stringent standards, it is important to note that its actual operation will result in much lower impacts than these maximum scenarios suggest.

We invite neighbors, and other interested parties to review the submitted studies and documentation, which reflect our commitment to transparency, sustainability, and community harmony. By exceeding these requirements, we aim to demonstrate our respect for Sunnyvale’s planning standards and our dedication to being good neighbors.

For more details, please explore the links to our submitted studies and feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns. <a href=\"https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org/multimedia/file/San-Jose-Site-with-dimensions.pdf\" target=\"_self\"
