Our Philosophy Our Community Classroom Matters is a place where families feel supported and well-served.  Individualized instruction is provided by experienced university students, graduates, and credentialed teachers who are experts in their subject fields and trained in providing executive functioning support. 25+ YEARS IN BUSINESS Since 2000, Classroom Matters has been the go-to destination for academic coaching, tutoring, test prep, and more. 40+ #ROCKSTAR TUTORS Our tutors are well-rounded mentors who care about their students and create respectful and productive relationships with them. 15,650+ STUDENTS SERVED We work with all ages of students and all types of learners. As we grow, so do our kiddos, who regularly refer their friends to us. Testimonials "Thank heavens for Classroom Matters! We have relied on their support to help both of our kids through Berkeley High. Over the years we have worked with them, they have done a superior job in finding excellent tutors who can connect and engage our high school students. In addition to helping our kids through a sometimes very difficult urban high school, they also were a fountain of support and advice when we were tearing our hair out (not infrequently). I can't say enough good about them..." - Berkeley Mom “Amanda’s tutoring help was a lifesaver! I’m not sure how we would have gotten Sebastian through this without Amanda - even after getting help from his teacher, he remained so stuck when it came to sitting down and writing on his own. Amanda managed to engage him via Zoom, which I really wasn’t sure would work given his challenges with remote learning. Amanda found a way to engage with him and he was able to actually sit down and write while he worked with her. Best part? Assignment was complete last night- yay!” - Ana, parent "I really want to thank you all at Classroom Matters. You seem to all care very much about students' needs and are very professional and approachable." - Julene F, parent "I really appreciate the support and feedback from Lauren and Classroom Matters! So glad we started when we did. Talia's grades have improved in such a short period of time so I know we are at the right place. Are you finding it hard to adult, even though you’re, well, an adult? Do your child’s executive function challenges feel like déja vu all over again? Are you struggling with any of the following? Planning and follow-through (making and carrying out goals and plans) Awareness (of others and yourself) Flexibility (adapting to changing situations) Self-control (how we respond to our emotions and stressful situations) Focus (concentrating on demand on what’s important) Our kids aren’t the only ones who need guidance and coaching. In a world where there are more demands than ever on our time, our attention , and our energy , you might benefit from some scaffolding of your own. Maybe you already know you’re the tree from whence your ADHD kiddo sprung. Maybe you don’t have a diagnosis, but you have a hunch and you just want to learn how to accommodate your brain needs. Lisa and Tatiana, CM's co-directors, offer a space for adults to get the help they need to foster compassion and patience for themselves (and their families). Here are some of the areas they cover in coaching sessions: Reframing how you think about time Helping you identify your own EF strengths and weaknesses Cultivating compassion for yourself Learning how to identify your purpose and your goals Using your purpose and goals to prioritize and plan Finding your future glasses and operating from a place of wonder rather than fear Identifying a few tools and strategies to use at home to scaffold your own executive function skills Devoting unadulterated time to connecting with yourself, your friends, and your family We ask people to self-evaluate in ten areas: metacognition, organization, time management, working memory, planning & prioritizing, task initiation, sustained attention, flexible thinking & problem-solving, stick-to-itiveness, and emotional regulation.  If needed: Learning the nitty-gritty details of ADHD (and other learning differences), how it shows up for you at home and at work, and how it impacts relationships. Learning and understanding terms like  PDA ,  RSD , and other  ADHD characteristics .  Reframing your thinking about ADHD so you can approach growth with a strengths-based lens. Just a quick note of appreciation now that J has finished his tutoring sessions with Ibrahim. J and Ibrahim worked together in a focused way to prepare specifically for the Math portion of the ACT. Ibrahim was able to identify some of J's weaknesses and improve his understanding of the content he had not mastered in school. He also gave him strategies around all of the sections of the ACT that I think will be helpful for him going forward.  Ibrahim was very patient and reliable and provided useful session reports each week. We are grateful that he was available to work with J and we would certainly recommend both him and Classroom Matters. Best wishes, S By the way, I would like to take this opportunity to again commend Jomar and his support of my son. He recently received an “A” in English on his third-quarter report card. English has been a bit of a struggle for him, so earning the A without long study sessions for my son and me or his dad is no small accomplishment!  My son has said on numerous occasions how he enjoys working with Jomar and has learned a lot from him. Kudos to you, Jomar, and the rest of the CM team for all that you are doing! I am really impressed by and appreciative of your hard work and efforts!   - Mom of a 6th grader The first session could not have gone better! He was all smiles when I dropped him off and all smiles when I picked him up. As soon as we left Nicky said to me "I want to go here for a really long time." I asked him what made him feel so good about his session and he told me, "Taj and I are opposite in a lot of ways so I can learn new things from him and he can learn from me. Like, I am better in math and I'm not that strong in writing."  - Meredith Hi Lisa and Tatiana, Just a note of thanks for yesterday. I have participated in EF workshops before (not Classroom Matters) and yours was by far the best and most helpful :). Looking forward to receiving the slides and sharing with my kids. With gratitude, Jennifer J. Thank you so much for the wonderful presentation! It was so valuable for the parent community who joined us today. And we look forward to continued collaboration to support ALL students and their families. Best, Dr. Rebecca Hawley, Ed.D Tilden Prep/Inclusive Schools Group     Kyle is fantastic — he connected with our daughter from their very first session and continues to fuel and support her interest in math, often exploring topics beyond her school curriculum — so much so that she is now reading books about math education for fun and is strongly considering a math major in college. (And he also made AP Chem a lot more manageable!) - M We absolutely adore working with Miriam; she’s brilliant at tutoring and using all the school’s digital tools to figure out what’s on Ilan’s plate. He has learned to trust her and appreciate her guidance. In addition, I have really appreciated her being my partner in keeping Ilan’s educational journey going strong in these difficult times. - A. Davis I'm really impressed with how CM is coming up with great programming in the face of these huge limitations. You've been much more steady in your offerings and communications than our actual schools have managed to be in the last two weeks. Not that I blame the schools--everyone has a lot to deal with. But you're inspiring me! - Rachel (Enrichment Programs parent) It’s been ages since the kids took the HSPT in the Oakland area, but I wanted to share our gratitude and praise for Sam Bordia. Chloe took the HSPT before tutoring with him and then again after tutoring with him. For NP-NS, she went from 80-7 (pre-Sam) to 91-8. Her SS went from 570-612. So great! And the results automatically earned her a place in honors classes. Thanks to Classroom Matters and to Sam! - V (mom)     Max was heading into his final exam in Trigonometry (worth 50% of his grade) with a solid F (47%). In just 2 tutoring sessions, he figured out all the baseline problems tugging at him that were bringing his grade down, and he scored a B+ on the exam. He ended up passing the class. Thanks again to you Classroom Matters, and to you Geoff for pulling off another miracle. We owe you a debt of gratitude. - J Hi Amanda, Thank you so much for all of the work you are doing with [son].  I checked Illuminate last night and [son] has A’s in all of his classes except Spanish, where he has a B+.  More importantly NO MISSING ASSIGNMENTS!  This is a far cry from where we were last year at this time.  While I realize there may not be too many assignments to work on during tutoring, I feel strongly that this weekly 3rd party accountability at Classroom Matters is what is keeping [son] focused and building good habits.  - Berkeley High mom Hi Nikki, Thank you so much for Story Hour. It was easily the best virtual experience [Iris] participated in during the shelter in place, and the only one that she fully engaged in. Thank you for all you do and for being so great at it. It truly was a god-send. Have a wonderful summer and I hope our paths cross again at some point.   Warmest regards, Ali  Dominique, THANK YOU for a year of amazing work with J! You've been able to get through to him in a way that I cannot, and inspire him to reach goals. I love that you are not just great with students or great with parents, but both. You are very much appreciated for your affability, creativity, spontaneous ideas and deep understanding. May we reserve you for 2020-21? Tatiana, THANK YOU for the wonderful support you gave in so many ways. I'm grateful for your insight, wisdom, and optimism - and for pairing J with Dominique! :)  - S.     Dear Classroom Matters staff, I would like to formally conclude my son Max tutoring sessions for the semester. The tutoring services have been incredibly helpful, and have helped make sense of difficult material. As a testament to tutoring efficacy, Max's final grade in chemistry is an A (both for this quarter and last), bringing his grade up from an F for the first quarter :) We are thrilled with this outcome, and it has given Max enormous confidence to learn how quickly he can turn things around with the right help. Thanks also to the staff for the swift and seamless transition from in person to online sessions. I would go further to say that Classroom Matters is well positioned to teach this course for all who need it! Now THAT’s a compliment - especially from my boys. Thanks for the checklists and timetables - super awesome resources. ” — Bay Area parent of 8th grade boys “ Thank you so much for the wonderful presentation! It was so valuable for the parent community who joined us today. And we look forward to continued collaboration to support ALL students and their families. ” — Dr. Rebecca Hawley, Ed.D Tilden Prep/Inclusive Schools Group “ Hi Lisa and Tatiana, Just a note of thanks for yesterday. I have participated in EF workshops before (not Classroom Matters) and yours was by far the best and most helpful :). Looking forward to receiving the slides and sharing with my kids. ” — With gratitude, Jennifer J. “ Hi Tatiana, it was so fun and helpful to hear you and Lisa last night! Hopefully no one could lip read me and Chris telling the kids to pay attention repeatedly. I loved the two minute family discussion segments and we had some good conversations. It was unclear what the impact on the kids was, but Willem brought his backpack upstairs after the session to prepare himself for the morning and Josephine made the attached (morning routine checklist). Very much appreciated the advice to parents about what a stressful time this is and what a long process developing executive function is. When we were late yet again this morning despite our very best efforts, I told the kids to remember that twisty curvy line from failure Calendar 2025-2026 — Classroom Matters Cart 0 Home What We Do Workshops Who We Are Our Favorite Things Contact Us BrainWorks CM BLOG Back Tutoring + Coaching IEP + 504 Plan Advocacy Parent Coaching Adult ADHD & Executive Function Coaching All About ADHD High-Dosage Tutoring Co-Working Test Prep Free Online Resources AccessEd Foundation Calendar 2025-2026 Empowering Growth Psychological Services Trusted Partners Back ADHD and You Directors' Cuts Workshops High-Impact Study Strategies High School 101 Professional Development Summer Workshops Test Prep Workshops Back #TeamCM: Tutors #TeamCM: Admin #TeamCM: Leadership Testimonials Back Send a Message Book a Consultation Join our Team CM Newsletter Back For Schools For Organizations Cart 0 Home What We Do Tutoring + Coaching IEP + 504 Plan Advocacy Parent Coaching Adult ADHD & Executive Function Coaching All About ADHD High-Dosage Tutoring Co-Working Test Prep Free Online Resources AccessEd Foundation Calendar 2025-2026 Empowering Growth Psychological Services Trusted Partners Workshops ADHD and You Directors' Cuts Workshops High-Impact Study Strategies High School 101 Professional Development Summer Workshops Test Prep Workshops Who We Are #TeamCM: Tutors #TeamCM: Admin #TeamCM: Leadership Testimonials Our Favorite Things Contact Us Send a Message Book a Consultation Join our Team CM Newsletter CLASSROOM MATTERS BrainWorks For Schools For Organizations CM BLOG Calendar 2025-2026 Classroom Matters generally follows BUSD’s calendar. Unique learning needs require unique teaching strategies. One-on-one academic support and coaching could be the tailored approach your student needs in order to get some school mojo back. Whether it's for AP Chem, English, study skills, or geometry, we have the #RockstarTutors who can provide customized instruction in all content areas, plus help develop executive functioning skills. Please contact us or call (510) 540-8646 for more details. Group Do you think your student would benefit from tutoring or coaching, but doesn't necessarily need an hour of one-on-one support? Bring a friend or two with similar needs, and we can set you up with a tutor who will provide small-group guidance with some one-on-one support thrown in. Please contact us or call (510) 540-8646 for more details. Executive function Executive functions are a set of cognitive and behavior skills, located in the prefrontal cortex of our brains, which include planning, working memory, and inhibitory control. In short, content area is the "what" of learning and executive function is the “how” of learning; it’s how we get things done. The term executive function has been a mainstay of the special education lexicon for decades. However, neurotypical students have underdeveloped executive function as well. When students don’t have strong executive skills, they struggle to get things done in school and in life.  Neuroscience tells us that our frontal lobes aren’t fully developed until our mid-twenties; so, it’s completely normal and appropriate that children and adolescents have executive function deficits. The good news is executive skills can be taught and, with practice, students can train their brains and improve their executive skills! Please contact us or call (510) 540-8646 for more details. PARENT COACHING Kids got your goat? Arguments between you and your spawn cheesing you off? You’re not alone. We all need a sounding and venting board sometimes. Especially when our kids are pushing, testing, pushing more, toeing the line so hard their crusty feet are in our faces. Schedule time with Lisa or Tatiana for parent coaching so you can connect before you correct. We’ll help you develop self-awareness, language, and inner resources so the only blown fuses in your house are because the lava lamps and the microwave are on at the same time. In our Summer Writing Program , we focus on a variety of components essential to expository essay writing. From literary analysis to shaping and supporting a strong thesis, small classes meet daily to explore the writing process in a fun and engaging environment. Through mini-lessons and guided practice, students will strengthen their aptitude for writing clear and convincing essays and develop a keen understanding of what makes good writing. An experienced instructor will assess each student’s level of ability; students will receive our trademark manuals as well as other valuable handouts to use throughout the school year. Our middle school class content differs from that of our high school class. Middle-schoolers read and work from a different set of short stories and instruction assumes students have a more basic understanding of essay writing and the skills required. You’re definitely not alone! Students aren't the only ones who need support. In this world where we are raising the first generation of digital natives, and there are more opportunities to feel disconnected than to feel connected, Classroom Matters is offering a space for parents and caregivers to get the help they need to foster compassion and patience in their parenting journeys. Here are some of the areas they cover in coaching sessions: Reframing how you think about what drives your child's behavior Cultivating compassion for, patience for, and acceptance of the child you have instead of yearning for the child you think you want Learning the language and lens of meeting your child where they are Identifying tools and strategies to use at home to scaffold executive function skills Co-regulating instead of co-escalating Setting realistic and developmentally appropriate expectations and non-negotiables Devoting unadulterated time to connecting with your kid Connecting before you correct and separating moments of connection from moments of correction/compliance Regularly modeling executive function skills at home Helping you identify your own EF strengths and weaknesses additional support: Identifying tools and strategies to effectively parent your neurodivergent child Learning the nitty-gritty details of ADHD, ASD (and other learning differences), how it shows up for your kid, and how it impacts relationships and learning. (Tangentially, you may need to embark on a discovery of your own ADHD and its impacts.) Learning and understanding terms like  PDA ,  RSD , and other  ADHD characteristics .  Reframing your thinking about ADHD and coming from a strengths-based perspective. The teacher asks everyone to take out their completed projects and turn them in. A bunch of the students groan and begin to tell tragic stories wherein the aforementioned projects have been eaten by mutant pets or stolen by roving bandits on horseback. Half of the students take out their versions of completed projects, realize something (or 5 somethings) is missing, and beg for extra time in class to finish. Another group brings in projects that have been finished (for reals), but still need to be assembled. And a select few (one to three students) float in on a wave of rainbow glitter, in all their unicorn glory, and hand in fully-baked-wrapped-in-completion-ribbon portfolios. Many factors contribute to academic success, including but not limited to cognitive functioning, academic functioning, emotional functioning, behavioral functioning, social functioning, and cultural considerations.  Our psychoeducational evaluations are conducted by licensed, doctoral-level psychologists trained in psychological testing specific to children and adolescents that examines psychological, intellectual, cognitive, and academic abilities. Our psychologists are also native to the Bay Area and therefore understand the cultural and social impacts that may be at play. Diversity-related factors and subsequent impacts are also explored and integrated into the understanding of your child’s presentation, strengths, and needs. These evaluations can help identify the best way for your child to utilize their strengths while intervening in areas of growth, as well as the way you can best support your child.  Our evaluations target different areas of functioning. Some areas include specific learning disabilities, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), overall cognitive functioning (i.e., memory and processing speed), gifted testing, and emotional or social functioning.  The following is a quick overview of the types of evaluations EGPS offers, but it is not exhaustive, so if there is a need you have in mind, please get in touch with us so we can explore it together:  ADHD assessments ADHD often impacts a person's ability to regulate attention, behavior, and impulses. We will gather information from multiple sources to better understand how your child is functioning in different settings. ADHD can present differently in each person and, therefore, can have different treatment recommendations. Our ADHD evaluation will determine whether ADHD is present, identify the type of ADHD impacting your child, and provide tailored recommendations to improve their overall performance and day-to-day functioning.  L earning disability evaluation This kind of evaluation would help uncover how your child understands and processes information in specific areas of learning: written language, reading, and math. After revealing how your child is processing information, EGPS would offer recommendations to foster your child’s ability to interpret, learn, and process certain types of information. We aim to provide specific information that can be implemented at home and at school to optimize their learning potential.  Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) The GATE program in California is a two-step process. Children have to be nominated and then administered standardized testing. Each school district has separate rules governing its GATE program, and families need to understand their district’s program. If you have determined your district will accept our comprehensive evaluation, EGPS can assist with assessing your child’s abilities and determining whether they meet the criteria for being considered "gifted." Acceptance into the GATE program can lead to specialized educational programs, resources, and enrichment opportunities. social and emotional functioning evaluation Childhood is hard, and adolescence is even harder. Our SEL evaluation helps identify any challenges your child may be facing in emotional regulation, interpersonal relationships, self-esteem, and social interactions. This evaluation can also be helpful if your kid wants to learn more about themselves, especially when there are concerns about their behavior, mood, or social difficulties.  Autism Spectrum difference ASD is a neurodevelopmental difference that affects an individual’s functioning across many areas of life, including social interactions, communication, understanding others' verbal and nonverbal communication, adherence to routine and schedules, and differences in sensory processing. Our evaluations can help determine where your child falls on the spectrum of neurodivergence and recommend ways to support them and help them navigate the world. Best part? We all know how effective it can be to work with others--we are often more focused and productive. For those of us with ADHD, body-doubling is sometimes the only way we can initiate non-preferred (boring) tasks.  Most of our students need support in between sessions but don't necessarily want more one-on-one tutoring (and the cost may be prohibitive). That's why we've created CM CoWorks for $40/hour! Co-working can be virtual or in-person at our center on Sacramento Street. In a CM CoWorks session, we will: Check in, develop mini-goals & co-create an agenda for the session Practice planning, prioritizing, and estimating Model time & brain-break management The current CoWorks schedule is Monday-Wednesday from 4:00-6:00pm. ALEJANDRO JIMENEZ he/him | In Center Senior Level II Alejandro is a long-time member of the Classroom Matters community. He first started tutoring as a senior at UC Berkeley, where he became passionate about meeting the needs of all learners, especially those in underserved communities. After leaving Berkeley, he went on to build a career in education, working as a program manager at UCLA and later at the City College of San Francisco. After seeing the challenges of teaching and learning in the smartphone era, Alejandro became interested in the intersection of education and technology. Leaning into research about the future of learning, from management systems to courses and the gamification of learning. He went on to get a Master's in Education from Harvard's Graduate School of Education in the Technology Innovation Education concentration. Alejandro has worked as a web producer for iReady Web Services and, most recently, on a research team at Apple, investigating learning experience design for Apple's VisionPro.
