MENDING LANDSCAPES
THREE SHORT FILMS BY MASHA KARPOUKHINA PRODUCED BY COLORFOOL FILMS
These three films represent an inspiring patchwork of some of the most ambitious conservation projects to be undertaken in California in response to the climate crisis. What can be achieved if we decide to work in concert with nature rather than against her? If we decide to learn from the wealth of ecological knowledge embedded in the evolutionary process, billions of years in the making? In many ways, the things that we love most about the Bay Area from our coastal redwoods, to the majesty of the Bay, to the free flowing waters that nourish it, deeply depend on the success of these three projects.
IMPACT: Premiered at the Bioneers 2023 annual conference in Berkeley, CA with live audience attendance of 2000+ and on their online platform with cumulative subscribers of over 220,000. Official Selection: Wild and Scenic Film Festival and River and Redwoods Films Festival, among others. Part of a robust impact and social media campaigns for CalWild, POST and Save The Bay.
As the Bay Area braces for seven feet of sea level rise by the year 2100, Save The Bay, along with partners like the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project, are pioneering nature-based solutions for one of the largest tidal marsh restoration projects on the West Coast. This innovative approach protects Bay Area wildlife and human communities with healthy marshes teeming with native vegetation instead of hardened seawalls or levees.
TEAM: Directing and Cinematography by Masha Karpoukhina. Additional Cinematography and Editing by Justin LaFleur.
WHERE WETLANDS GROW: SAVE THE BAY
There are so few free-flowing rivers in the U.S. that the Department of the Interior considers them endangered ecosystems. Enter Kayla Lopez, a young river activist, and Steve Evans (aka The River Guy), who has lobbied for wild rivers in Congress his whole life. Both are on a journey into the spirit of the California rivers they hold dear. Follow their stories as we explore CalWild's mission to protect a total of 6,000 miles eligible under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act by 2028.
TEAM: Directing, Cinematography and Editing by Masha Karpoukhina. Additional Cinematography by Justin LaFleur.
6,000 MILES: CALWILD
A VALLEY ENDURES: PENINSULA OPEN SPACE TRUST (POST)
Between two ridges—the Santa Cruz Mountains and the Diablo Range—lies Coyote Valley, the last remaining, largely undeveloped link connecting 1.13 million acres of habitat that is already severely fragmented by human development. If the wildlife who call these habitats home are to have a chance at adapting to our changing climate, or even surviving, Coyote Valley must be protected forever.
TEAM: Directing and Cinematography by Masha Karpoukhina. Additional Cinematography and Editing by Justin LaFleur.

Our approach is simple: to tell stories in an authentic, cinematic and compassionate way to drive the biggest possible impact. About colorfool In the age of the Anthropocene, we are faced with extraordinary challenges that will require uncompromising courage and compassion as we attempt to perform the largest act of transformation the humanity has ever seen. Standing up for life on planet Earth. This is also a time of immense opportunity to re-envision a resilient future for our planet that works for all of us. These are great times, because a sense of shared responsibility is growing, as we forge new ways of collaborating across disciplines like science and indigenous ecological knowledge, like journalism and art. A call to reconnect with nature is growing as we re-remember our true essence of reciprocity. A need to challenge or altogether dismantle the conventional narrative is growing, as we seek meaning and clarity. The exploitative framework that views nature (and people) as a resource is finally beginning to fracture, as we restore our sense of the sacred, as we awaken to the reality that nature is not a resource, but a source of all life. Through cinema, we seek meaningful partnerships with nonprofits, purposeful businesses, and individuals who are working on shaping our future through technology, science, policy, ethical business, community building, or social movements and who champion their causes—to help us redefine what is possible, together. Reimagining those structures along principles of care can create health for all beings. IMPACT: Premiered: Bioneers annual conference. But no matter the purpose of your final film, we know it should inspire meaningful conversation and engage the hearts & minds of your audience. And it should always be clear, impactful, and memorable. As an impact-driven video production company, we help you identify the most effective avenues to communicate with your audience and drive change . We provide all services necessary to take your story from script to screen. This includes story identification, concept development, storyboarding, casting narrative or documentary subjects, interview questions, all aspects of production (like cinematography, drone, etc.), editing, color grading, 2D or 3D motion graphics, animation, music & sound design, and the final delivery in the format of your choice. FAQ concept development • storyboarding • editing • motion graphics • music & sound design • concept development • storyboarding • editing • motion graphics • music & sound design • concept development • storyboarding • editing • motion graphics • music & sound design • our process Process breakdown 1) Strategy Meeting This is the initial step for us to understand your organization, your mission, your audience, and the potential for the impact of your film. 2) Story Structure This is where we begin identifying and developing your strongest story. We will also determine who the best people are to tell it, explore the most interesting B-roll opportunities and create pre-interview questions. 3) Pre-Interviews We speak with all of our selected interviewees and delve deep into their stories. At the end of this process, we will make a final selection of our speakers. 4) Pre-Production We develop the filming schedule and create the interview questions together. You will have an opportunity to give feedback/help steer our story during all of the steps in pre-production. At the end of this process we are all on the same page and ready to film. 5) Filming We execute filming utilizing the best tools for the story. We have most of the necessary equipment in house, such as cameras, sound, lights, drone, gimbal, etc., but we may decide to supplement the equipment or add crew based on the scope of production. 6) Post-Production We edit your film. We may want to add motion graphics or animation or keep it simple. You will have 2 rounds of review, as well as original or licensed music, professional color correction and sound mix included in the edit. 7) Final We deliver your Final in the format of your choice. We will agree on all the deliverables beforehand. FAQ We hope you will find the answers to all of your questions here, but if not, please don't hesitate to get in touch. How long does it take to complete a film? This is highly dependent on the length and complexity of your film, but most films that are 2-6 minutes in length take 2-3 months to complete, from conception to final cut. What if we have a special screening deadline? Can you complete it faster? The simple answer is yes, but within reason. We want to make sure you are able to showcase your film at that fundraiser, event, or a legislative meeting, but we don't want to compromise on quality because of the rush. We encourage you to get in touch with us as well in advance as possible. How much does it cost? This will be highly dependent on the length and complexity of your film, the number of shooting dates, crew, animation, graphics, etc. We are happy to provide you a quote free of charge. We have experience working with high budgets and international crews, as well as underfunded nonprofits. Our priority is the story and the potential impact, not a paycheck, so we will work with you to make sure we are able to deliver the best possible film within your budget. Do you charge for quotes or initial consultation? No. Our quotes and initial consultation are always free. Give us a call at +1 (415) 735-0086 or email us at
[email protected] to set up a consultation. What if my story is not in the Bay Area? Do you travel? We love to travel and have worked on stories all over the world from multi-day hike expeditions in secluded forests to disaster areas, from busy urban environments to remote islands and villages. Will it cost more to shoot in other locations? Yes. There will be additional travel and lodging costs, but besides that, we don't charge anything extra to shoot somewhere else. We have ways to keep travel costs down and will always approve these costs in advance. Do you BOOK YOUR OWN TRAVEL or will I have to do it? We can take care of all booking and traveling as part of the pre-production process. How many shooting days are usually necessary? Each film is unique, but our average is 2-3 shooting days. Many films do well with a single shooting day, but there are times when we may want to shoot 5 or even more days to ensure we tell the full story. We are very busy. What is the time commitment expected from us? We love working closely with you and your team and encourage you to be as involved as possible during all the stages of production; however, we completely understand that sometimes this is simply not possible. We can take over most of the work and schedule check-ins that work with your schedule to receive your feedback on the completed steps. What if I am not sure what kind of film would work best? That's okay. A big part of our pre-production process is designed to help identify your strongest story based on your audience and your impact goals. Together, we will identify the type of film that would work best, whether you need motion graphics or animation, and how to execute your vision with quality and a heart. +1 (415) 735-0086
