Fixes That Work Why Is My Paint Bubbling? Few things are more frustrating than seeing a freshly painted wall or exterior surface start to bubble, crack, or peel. These problems don’t just look bad, they also signal that something underneath the paint isn’t right. Whether it’s moisture, poor preparation, or aging materials, understanding why paint fails is the first step toward fixing it for good. Here is what causes bubbling, cracking, and peeling paint, along with proven solutions that actually work. What Causes Paint to Bubble? Paint bubbling, also called blistering, happens when air or moisture becomes trapped between the paint and the surface. As temperatures rise, that trapped moisture or air expands, pushing the paint outward and creating bubbles. The most common cause is moisture. This could be from leaks behind walls, high humidity, condensation, or even painting a surface that wasn’t completely dry. Exterior walls are especially vulnerable if rain or morning dew was present before the paint had time to cure. Another common cause is painting over a dirty or greasy surface. When dust, oil, or residue is left behind, the paint can’t properly bond , allowing bubbles to form later. How to Fix Bubbling Paint First, you need to identify and eliminate the source of moisture. In fact, the fastest way to upgrade the look of any home is to paint walls and baseboards together. The pros at Colortouch Painting recommend using a high quality water-borne acrylic or hybrid-alkyd paint because it will stick well, level well and is easy to clean up. How To Paint Baseboards Already In Place How you paint baseboards is determined largely if they are already on the wall or not. If you’re installing new baseboards the task is much simpler. They can be primed and painted before installation, then afterwards, one can touch up the nail-holes and caulk without coming close to the floor. In most cases, when doing interior painting the baseboards are already in place, so we’ll focus this article on painting baseboards that are already installed. Step 1: Clean Baseboards Before Painting Baseboards that have been in place for any length of time can get quite dirty. Dirt, dust and other grime can build over time and prevent paint from adhering to the surface. So we always recommend cleaning baseboards with a tsp (trisodium phosphate) “no-rinse” substitute before painting or priming. No-rinse substitutes work great without the caustic properties and rinsing of a conventional TSP, yet we advise a drop cloth to protect any vulnerable surfaces and always wear rubber gloves. In addition, use some form of eye protection to prevent any unwanted splashing in the eyes. Mix the TSP no-rinse with water per the instructions and use a clean rag to wipe down the baseboards. Be sure to get the top of the baseboards where dust has accumulated. Step 2: Prepare Baseboard Surfaces Most baseboards will have accumulated a number of battle scars over the years including scratches, dings or chips. Use wood filler such as bondo and a putty knife to fill in any problem areas, taking care to not over apply. To much filler just requires more sanding! Once the filler has dried, sand the surface using a 120 grit sandpaper. Step 3: Masking When it comes to baseboards, we always advise masking where the baseboards meet the floor to protect them from spatter. However, do not paint down onto the tape, as the paint will invariably “bleed” under the tape and onto the floor. Use a low-stick (blue) painters tape that’s between 1.5 and 2 inches wide. Apply it carefully and be sure to press firmly all along the length of the tape to minimize bleed-through. Remember, painters tape isn’t perfect no matter how well it’s applied so you still want to be careful when painting. Step 4: Priming The Baseboards If your baseboards don’t have a primer coat or are particularly old, a primer coat could be in order. If the baseboards are in good shape, you could probably skip this step. Apply primer carefully, so as not to load up too much primer to avoid any drips or runs. We recommend starting higher up on the baseboard and then slowly working the primer closer to the floor. If you start close to the floor, your primer is likely to bleed down onto (and under) the tape! Use long strokes starting near the top of the baseboard and don’t over apply. Then let the primer dry according to the manufacturers recommendations. Step 5: Painting The Baseboards First things first. If your paint has been sitting unused for more than a few days, be sure to give it a good stir before you start painting. It may also be a good idea to strain the paint, using a strainer bag and gloves. Once your paint is ready to go, follow the same procedure as you did for the primer. Again, don’t overload your brush with paint so as to avoid drips and runs. One third of the bristle length should be enough. Use long strokes without over extending yourself so you maintain control on the brush. As you progress along the baseboard, keep a wet edge, painting back over the edges of previously painted areas before the paint dries. This helps prevent lap marks. After the first coat has been applied, let the paint dry for 3-5 hours, depending on the room temperature. Paint dries better under warm conditions. Once it’s dry, apply a second coat and let the paint dry before removing the masking tape . We always provide the maximum of both, according to each client’s needs and expectations. We feel that great interior and exterior painting jobs should not only look fantastic but last a long time as well. That said, the painting process needed to make great things happen is not random. A project that seems daunting at first can be handled through sound strategies and a series of calculated steps. This is why we adhere to sound painting principles, tried and true strategies and use top quality materials. We want to share some of our house painting ideas, tips and advice for anyone looking to upgrade their homes through interior or exterior painting. House painting seems like a simple task at first, but it takes a lot of practice and skill development. That said, we can share ideas that might save you time and aggravation. Here, we will share some trade knowledge that will help you understand or even perform the work yourself. Exterior Painting Strategy Start by cleaning, which entails manual scrubbing or 1500-2000 psi removal of dirt and other organic material from the building. If necessary, bleach is used to kill mildew, and use a bucket and stiff bristle brush to remove any organic material left by the power washing process. Care must be taken not to use the power-washer near windows and doors so as to avoid getting water into the house. Window frames can be washed by hand and allowed to dry. Afterwards: Always protect flooring and landscaping before starting. We use 4mm plastic to contain lead -based paint chips on older homes. Completely remove loose or imminently failing paint using high-quality scrapers. On widely cracking surfaces, heat guns may be used. Sand rough blemishes with a coarse grit of sandpaper, we recommend Norton 3x. Replace any failed window glazing early in the process as it takes over a week to cure. Pre-prime using specialty primers, such as rust converting primer on rusty metal and a wood hardening primer on soft wood. Use a masonry primer on Stucco and Acrylic primer on bare galvanized metal. Prime all bare wood using appropriate (interior or exterior) stain-blocking alkyd (oil-based) primers. Be sure to use a slow-drying alkyd primer outside for a more flexible base coat. Avoid fast-drying alkyd or shellac-based primers outside, as these are more brittle. Fill gouges using epoxy fillers or the appropriate patching compounds. Never use exterior spackle as it will absorb moisture and bubble. After sanding, apply high-grade Elastomeric or urethane-reinforced caulking. For extreme movement, one may opt for industrial caulks such as Sika-Flex or “ OSI Quad Max “. Never use Silicone caulk, as it is not paint-able. Use an elastomeric stucco patch to bridge hairline cracks in masonry and stucco. Ready mixed stucco patch can fill deeper blemishes. Re-prime as needed, using a quality exterior acrylic primer. Finish with two high-quality finish coats of acrylic paint. Interior Painting Strategy Always protect flooring, countertops, furniture and appliances. We use drop-cloths and rosin paper, along with high density plastic. Establish a “shop” or base of operations, where most of your tools and paint will be kept. Excess clutter creates trip hazards and wasted time. Remove electrical cover plates and all window and door hardware. Tape the screws to plates and hardware and keep in a safe place. Clean surfaces as needed using a mild tsp solution. heavy grease may require ammonia or “ greased lightning “. Sand blemishes with a medium to fine (120-150) grit of sandpaper. De-gloss trim by sanding with fine paper and wipe down with de-glosser . Patch gouges in wood using bondo. Use lightweight spackle for small nail-holes and 5 minute mud for larger holes in walls. Do not over-apply. After sanding, apply caulking to gaps between trim and wall surfaces. Do not caulk first, as you may hit the caulk while sanding. Prime as needed, using a universal primer such as Bulls-eye 123 for drywall and BIN shellac stain blocker for water stains. Finish with two high-quality finish coats of paint. Window Glazing Window glazing takes over a week to cure before painting, so try to get your failed glazing removed, primed and replaced as soon in the exterior sequence as possible.
