In 2021, he retired as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Weingart Foundation, where he served for 21 years. Prior to his work at the Foundation, Fred was the founding Executive Director of Covenant House California, as well as Covenant House Alaska. Fred is currently serving as a consultant and strategic advisor on projects and initiatives focused on advancing racial equity and justice, as well as organizational effectiveness. He also maintains an executive coaching and mentoring practice, and has written and spoken extensively on issues pertaining to the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors, and executive leadership and management. Fred also chairs the Board of Catalyst California. Ami Rowland Chief Program Officer [email protected] Ami’s lives her life and leads her team with the conviction that “there is no such thing as someone else’s child.” With more than 20 years of experience working in residential treatment programs for children and youth touched by the child welfare and juvenile justice systems, Ami now oversees all programmatic operations for CHC since 2014. Ami and her family relocated to the Bay Area to provide increasing leadership and support for our expansion of programs and services in Northern California. Prior to joining the team at CHC, she was the Southern California Regional Director of Residential services for children and transitional-age youth at Olive Crest. It was there that she handled all program guidelines, development, strategic planning, budgeting, supervision of management employees, and was an advocate for transitional housing programs and the extension of ‘Foster Care Until 21’ across the state. Ami is a passionate voice for all youth experiencing homelessness, and currently serves as a member of the board of directors for California Coalition for Youth. When she’s not providing love, hugs and encouragement to our youth and staff at the Cov, you’ll find her soaking up time with her two sons and cheering them on in life! Lailanie Jones Senior Vice President, Southern California [email protected] Lailanie has dedicated her life to improving the education and well-being of children in need. From her summers as a young girl, serving in orphanages all over the world, to her previous role in working with children and families experiencing homelessness, Lailanie is passionate about helping and empowering others. She comes to Covenant House CA with over twenty years of experience in early childhood education, most notably serving for fourteen years as Executive Director of Precious Lamb Preschool in Long Beach, California. The school served children of parents who were experiencing homelessness, and provided support for the families. Through her visionary leadership, Lailanie brought about a dramatic expansion in all areas of the organization. Most importantly to her, she created and nurtured a diverse and inclusive culture centered around compassion, integrity, and dignity, for both her staff and for the families she served. Lailanie has received numerous awards and recognition for her leadership in the community of Long Beach, CA and LA County. When not at work, you can find Lailanie cooking for and hosting friends and family, and most of all enjoying time with her husband Scott and their two beautiful girls, Juliana and Evelyn. Alana Weinroth Chief Development Officer [email protected] Alana Weinroth is an accomplished nonprofit development professional with over a decade of experience. She began her career in the investment software sector, where she gained valuable expertise in corporate sales and event planning. In 2015, Alana transitioned to nonprofit development with Covenant House International, and in 2017, she joined Covenant House California, where she advanced through multiple development roles. After a year away to broaden her experience, Alana returned to Covenant House California as Chief Development Officer, driven by her deep love for the mission and the organization. She brings a wealth of knowledge and an unwavering commitment to advancing Covenant House’s mission to end youth homelessness. Heather Flynn Senior Vice President, Strategy and Administration [email protected] Heather has dedicated her career to uplifting programs serving young people who deserve, but have not always experienced, unconditional love, respect, and a sense of family. With this passion for youth, Heather informs the agency’s strategic vision, leads quality assurance, agency compliance, government partnership and fund development operations. Her role guides statewide planning to enhance funding opportunities, support programmatic excellence, and ensure operational efficiency across the organization. Their support helps us pursue our mission to help youth overcome homelessness and human trafficking. Ilene Harker Board Chair Head of Enterprise Risk, Western Asset Management (retired) Ilene joined Covenant House California’s Board of Directors in 2015 and currently serves as Chair of the Governance Committee. She and her husband Jim live in Newport Beach, CA. Ilene and Jim are proprietors of SoMa Cellars a premium wine brand. Ilene retired in 2014 from Western Asset Management Company, a global investment management firm. While at Western Asset, she was responsible for their Enterprise Risk program. Ilene serves as Chair of the Board of CREST Education Center a program for special needs for children with special needs. David Ambroz Head of External Affairs SoCal, Amazon David Ambroz is a national poverty and child welfare expert and advocate. He was recognized by President Obama as an American Champion of Change. Currently serving as the Head of Community Engagement (West) for Amazon, Ambroz previously led Corporate Social Responsibility for Walt Disney Television, and has served as president of the Los Angeles City Planning Commission as well as a California Child Welfare Council member. After growing up homeless and then in foster care, he graduated from Vassar College and later earned his J.D. from UCLA School of Law. He is a foster dad and lives in Los Angeles, CA. Rachael Chambers Director, Strategy & Planning, CISCO RACHAEL CHAMBERS, is a 19-year Cisco veteran with experience in multiple organizations including People and Communities, Sales Operations, and IT. Before Cisco, her career includes tenures at Google, Netscape, Excite and MCI. She holds a BA from the University of California at San Diego. In January 2023, Rachael joined the Global Employee Relations organization to lead the Communications, Employee Experience, and Infrastructure team. Prior to her role in People and Communities she was the Director of Strategy and Planning for Cisco’s Global Enterprise West (GESW) sales team. She partnered with the Area Vice President and leadership team to provide strategic direction and translate the high-level strategy into field-level functional impact for the $2B sales organization. This included developing and implementing business processes with associated success metrics, training programs and executive level communications. She also partnered with key stakeholders across the area and segment to build strong strategic partnerships and joint strategies. Operationally, she led the yearly Fiscal New Year Planning process with the Finance and Sales Advisor teams. She served as the co-chair for the Global Enterprise Segment Culture team focused on programs that drove employee recruitment, recognition, retention. Rachael also leads the GES Give Back initiative for the Covenant House. For the last 7 years, she’s successfully led the global give back effort that resulted in Cisco being awarded the top fundraising team and “Partner of the Year” for 4 years in a row. The global efforts have raised over $15M across fundraising, technology grants, and emergency funding. In 2019, she was inducted into the Multi-Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame for the “Don’t Give Up” award and in 2022 was awarded the “Cash, Sweat, and Tears” Award from the Peer to Peer Professional Forum. Rachael currently serves on the California Covenant House Board of Directors and volunteers for multiple animal rescue organizations. Her family includes her husband of 22 years, two children, 5 dogs, many cats, and various other rescued creatures. She is an avid photographer, loves hiking along the California coast, and is a huge San Jose Sharks hockey fan. Paul Daneshrad Founder & Chief Executive Officer, Starpoint Properties Paul Daneshrad is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of StarPoint Properties, a private real estate firm, which he founded in 1990 and has built into one of the most respected real estate investment and development firms in the industry with $1.5+ billion of transactions over its history. StarPoint prides itself on delivering, decade after decade, market leading returns to its investors and providing asymmetrical returns that have proven to outperform most alternate investments. Mr. Daneshrad’s 30 year tenure and extensive experience in the real estate industry ultimately built the company into the vertically integrated real estate firm that it is today. Mr. Daneshrad is considered an expert in the real estate investment community, often speaking at national conferences, a noted expert by multiple real estate publications including: Net Lease Forum, Multi-Family Executive, California Real Estate Journal, Multi-Housing News, National Real Estate Investor, Real Estate Southern California, and Commercial Property News. They receive a nutritious meal, take a shower with new personal care products, receive new clothes, and sleep in a warm, safe bed. They are then connected to supportive services that will help them thrive. Rights of Passage Two-Year on-site transitional living program CHC’s transitional housing program allows young people to refine their independent living skills. For up to two years, they live on campus, healing from the trauma they suffered on the streets. They learn to save money and budget to pay rent, utilities and other necessities. They save their money for their first apartment and focus on earning a living wage. During this time they heal from the trauma they endured on the streets as they learn life skills, focus on earning a living wage, and save up money for their first apartment. Supportive Apartment Programs Two-Year off-site transitional living program Youth with a higher level of life skills are placed into our Supportive Apartment program, which provides financial assistance to youth living in off-campus apartments. The team assists with critical safety needs by providing transportation to a safe shelter. Young people living on the streets can receive, food, water, hygiene kits, warm clothing, blankets, counseling and referrals to needed services such as medical care and employment and education services. Most importantly, our Street Outreach Program shows youth that they are cared for, and worth being pursued. Day Outreach / Wellness Youth receive a nutritious meal, take a hot shower, receive hygiene products, and get new clothing and shoes There are not enough beds in the community to house all young people who experience homelessness; and sometimes, youth are not ready to engage in residential services. For those youth, we offer day outreach/wellness care, places where youth can drop in to rest during the day, shower, get a meal, do laundry, have internet access, and access to day-programming such as case management and referrals to additional services. Medical & Mental Health CHC provides valuable medical and mental health services for youth experiencing homelessness. Many of our campuses include an onsite clinic space for youth to access medical and mental healthcare services, and sites that do not have a physical clinic have agreements with community partners who visit the campus to ensure youth has easy access to meet all of their medical and mental health needs. Medical care includes primary care, urgent care, immunizations and health education. Mental Healthcare services are provided by licensed professionals and include both individual and group therapy as well as other interventions youth may need. Career Teaching youth how to find job openings, apply, interview, dress and behave in the workplace Our employment specialists provide career case management, teach youth how to find job openings, apply, interview, dress and behave in the workplace. CHC offers onsite and offsite internship programs allow youth to gain verifiable work experience as well as earn a small stipend. Youth can access a professional clothing closet and transportation assistance through this program as well. Education Helping youth complete or continue their education Our education specialists provide education case management, helping youth complete or continue their education. Youth can receive tutoring, mentoring, access to a computer lab, study for their GED, or learn English as a Second Language. CHC also partners with Five Keys Charter School, or the local school districts, to provide onsite opportunities for youth to earn a high school diploma Spiritual Ministry Welcoming those of all faiths. Our Spiritual Ministry program aims to provide not only opportunities for our residents to experience and explore spiritual growth. It also provides the opportunity for our staff, volunteers, and youth to experience the reward of giving back to others in need. They receive a nutritious meal, take a shower with new personal care products, receive new clothes, and sleep in a warm, safe bed. They are then connected to supportive services that will help them thrive. Rights of Passage Two-Year on-site transitional living program CHC’s transitional housing program allows young people to refine their independent living skills. For up to two years, they live on campus, healing from the trauma they suffered on the streets. They learn to save money and budget to pay rent, utilities and other necessities. They save their money for their first apartment and focus on earning a living wage. During this time they heal from the trauma they endured on the streets as they learn life skills, focus on earning a living wage, and save up money for their first apartment. Supportive Apartment Programs Two-Year off-site transitional living program Youth with a higher level of life skills are placed into our Supportive Apartment program, which provides financial assistance to youth living in off-campus apartments. During their stay CHC provides an ever-lowering percentage of their rent until they are paying the full amount. Youth in this program are responsible for the rest of their bills and personal expenses and continue to have access to all of CHC’s supportive services. H2O Hope2Opportunity Permanent housing, supported by CHC up to 24 months, before youth takes over H20 is CHC’s Rapid Re-Housing program which features short-term housing assistance along with all of CHC’s supportive services. Case managers work with youth and local landlords to find appropriate apartments, then assist youth with move-in costs, rental assistance and weekly case management to ensure success. After two years youth take over their apartment leases. Homelessness is extremely traumatic for young families, often leading to serious and lifelong effects for the child and the parent. 15% Among current and former foster youth in California who are young parents, 15% are homeless 44% of young women, ages 18-25, who face homelessness, report being a parent or pregnant 18% For young men, ages 18-25, who face homelessness, 18% report being a parent Parenting Youth Need More Than Just a Safe Place to Sleep “Young children are particularly vulnerable as the first five years of a child’s life are critical for brain development.” Donate Now Homelessness is extremely traumatic for young families, often leading to serious and lifelong effects for the child and the parent. Young children are particularly vulnerable as the first five years of a child’s life are critical for brain development. Early experiences of homelessness place parents and children at a higher risk for a range of challenges, including pregnancy-related deaths, chronic illness, and developmental delays. About 44% of young women and 18% of young men, ages 18-25, who face homelessness report being a parent or being pregnant.   Pregnancy and parenting are common among young people facing homelessness, more so than among their stably housed peers.   Young families experiencing homelessness find there are few options for safe shelter and services for them. We Are Committed to Helping Young Families Transform Their Lives When we welcome a young parent into one of our houses, we provide a host of wraparound services that respond to their immediate needs and support them while they work on acquiring skills and knowledge that will allow them to build a stable life for themselves and their children. Najma's Story Building Trust and Community with Young Parents at CHC Santa Clara For Najma Sadiq, a Residential Manager at Covenant House California Santa Clara, the most rewarding part of her work is earning the trust of the young people she serves – especially the young parents. One moment stands out… when a young mother let Najma hold her baby for the first time. “As I was holding him, I was like, “she trusts us. Because this is her child.’” For Najma, trust is everything. It is one of the most fulfilling parts of this work to be youth’s go-to person and safe space. “When those trust gates do open, it’s magical,“ she shared. “Just being able to be that go-to person for them – when their parents aren’t there for them or their siblings, or their friends… to be that go-to that’s just like ‘hey, I need to vent, I need to cuss, I need to cry,’ and knowing that I’m here for them in that capacity – is what keeps me going.” For now, Najma is looking forward to one more milestone – when the newest newborn at the Cov starts talking and she can officially be “Auntie Naj”. The team assists with critical safety needs by providing transportation to a safe shelter. Young people living on the streets can receive, food, water, hygiene kits, warm clothing, blankets, counseling and referrals to needed services such as medical care and employment and education services. Most importantly, our Street Outreach Program shows youth that they are cared for, and worth being pursued. Day Outreach / Wellness Youth receive a nutritious meal, take a hot shower, receive hygiene products, and get new clothing and shoes There are not enough beds in the community to house all young people who experience homelessness; and sometimes, youth are not ready to engage in residential services. For those youth, we offer day outreach/wellness care, places where youth can drop in to rest during the day, shower, get a meal, do laundry, have internet access, and access to day-programming such as case management and referrals to additional services. Medical & Mental Health CHC provides valuable medical and mental health services for youth experiencing homelessness. Many of our campuses include an onsite clinic space for youth to access medical and mental healthcare services, and sites that do not have a physical clinic have agreements with community partners who visit the campus to ensure youth has easy access to meet all of their medical and mental health needs. Medical care includes primary care, urgent care, immunizations and health education. Mental Healthcare services are provided by licensed professionals and include both individual and group therapy as well as other interventions youth may need. Career Teaching youth how to find job openings, apply, interview, dress and behave in the workplace Our employment specialists provide career case management, teach youth how to find job openings, apply, interview, dress and behave in the workplace. CHC offers onsite and offsite internship programs allow youth to gain verifiable work experience as well as earn a small stipend. Youth can access a professional clothing closet and transportation assistance through this program as well. Education Helping youth complete or continue their education Our education specialists provide education case management, helping youth complete or continue their education. Youth can receive tutoring, mentoring, access to a computer lab, study for their GED, or learn English as a Second Language. CHC also partners with Five Keys Charter School, or the local school districts, to provide onsite opportunities for youth to earn a high school diploma Spiritual Ministry Welcoming those of all faiths. Our Spiritual Ministry program aims to provide not only opportunities for our residents to experience and explore spiritual growth. It also provides the opportunity for our staff, volunteers, and youth to experience the reward of giving back to others in need. Spiritual ministry services also assist youth who have a strong faith background or are seeking meaning for their life through spiritual exploration and growth. Children and youth experiencing homelessness are a prime target of this criminal industry. 20% Nearly 20% of the people who find safety at Covenant House California are survivors of human trafficking. 22% Nearly 1 in 4 were approached for paid sex on their first night of homelessness. 31% Almost a third of our shelter residents who identify as LGBTQ+ have experienced trafficking. Human Trafficking in California “California consistently has the highest human trafficking rates and reported cases of any state in the nation” Donate Now Of 641 youth interviewed at Covenant House sites across the US and Canada, including Oakland and Los Angeles, one in five identified that they had survived some form of human trafficking. Nine out of every ten youth interviewed reported being approached by someone with lucrative work opportunities that turned out to be fraudulent, scams, or sex trafficking. California consistently has the highest human trafficking rates and reported cases of any state in the nation. Research shows that youth and young adults experiencing homelessness are among the most vulnerable groups to traffickers – one in five unhoused young people experiences either labor or sexual exploitation. From 2015 to 2021, the percentage of human trafficking cases that involved sex trafficking increased from 87% to 89% in California and from 85% to 88% nationwide. Unhoused Youth are Especially Vulnerable Young women and girls are the most at-risk of trafficking. Traffickers often target youth in vulnerable situations, like homelessness and poverty, by exploiting their lack of access to resources, and a sense of community. We must address racial discrimination if we are to end youth homelessness and ensure every young person has a safe place to live and the support they need to realize their dreams. 26% of Californians experiencing homelessness identify as Black or African American, while only 7% of all Californians identify as Black or African American. 25% 1 in 4 Hispanic and Latinx children live below the poverty line in the U.S., compared to 1 in 9 white children. 85% In CA, 85% of the youth we serve are youth of color How Does Racial Discrimination Impact Youth of Color? “26% of all Californians experiencing homelessness identify as Black or African American, even though Black Californians only make up 7% of the state’s total population” Donate Now Due to historic and structural racism, people of color are more likely to be extremely low-income, and are therefore at higher risk of experiencing homelessness. Across America, Black people represent around 14% of the overall population, but more than 37% of all people experiencing homelessness. (HUD/US Census) Indigenous Americans, Native Alaskans, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders, and people who identify as biracial also make up a disproportionate share of the homeless population National Alliance to End Homelessness,. Hispanic/Latinx people make up a share of the homeless population slightly higher than their share of the general population, while White and Asian people are significantly underrepresented. 27% of all Californians experiencing homelessness identify as Black or African American, even though Black Californians only make up 7% of the state’s total population. Indigenous American, Hawaiian Native, Alaskan Native, and Pacific Islander Californians also experience adult and youth homelessness at disproportionate rates. The team assists with critical safety needs by providing transportation to a safe shelter. Young people living on the streets can receive, food, water, hygiene kits, warm clothing, blankets, counseling and referrals to needed services such as medical care and employment and education services. Most importantly, our Street Outreach Program shows youth that they are cared for, and worth being pursued. Day Outreach / Wellness Youth receive a nutritious meal, take a hot shower, receive hygiene products, and get new clothing and shoes There are not enough beds in the community to house all young people who experience homelessness; and sometimes, youth are not ready to engage in residential services. For those youth, we offer day outreach/wellness care, places where youth can drop in to rest during the day, shower, get a meal, do laundry, have internet access, and access to day-programming such as case management and referrals to additional services. Medical & Mental Health CHC provides valuable medical and mental health services for youth experiencing homelessness. Many of our campuses include an onsite clinic space for youth to access medical and mental healthcare services, and sites that do not have a physical clinic have agreements with community partners who visit the campus to ensure youth has easy access to meet all of their medical and mental health needs. Medical care includes primary care, urgent care, immunizations and health education. Mental Healthcare services are provided by licensed professionals and include both individual and group therapy as well as other interventions youth may need. Career Teaching youth how to find job openings, apply, interview, dress and behave in the workplace Our employment specialists provide career case management, teach youth how to find job openings, apply, interview, dress and behave in the workplace. CHC offers onsite and offsite internship programs allow youth to gain verifiable work experience as well as earn a small stipend. Youth can access a professional clothing closet and transportation assistance through this program as well. Education Helping youth complete or continue their education Our education specialists provide education case management, helping youth complete or continue their education. Youth can receive tutoring, mentoring, access to a computer lab, study for their GED, or learn English as a Second Language. CHC also partners with Five Keys Charter School, or the local school districts, to provide onsite opportunities for youth to earn a high school diploma Spiritual Ministry Welcoming those of all faiths. Our Spiritual Ministry program aims to provide not only opportunities for our residents to experience and explore spiritual growth. It also provides the opportunity for our staff, volunteers, and youth to experience the reward of giving back to others in need. Spiritual ministry services also assist youth who have a strong faith background or are seeking meaning for their life through spiritual exploration and growth. We Help Young People Facing Homelessness When Foster Care Can’t 32% of the youth who come to Covenant House have had involvement with foster care. Our trauma-informed, strengths-based approach to our residential programs and support services meet youth where systems have either left off or failed to meet their needs. When Young People Age Out of the Foster Care System Young people typically age out of the system at 18 or 21 years of age, a time when they are often ill-equipped to navigate a successful path to a self-sufficient and independent adulthood. This is precisely when young people become most vulnerable to homelessness, human trafficking, and a host of other threats and obstacles to their well-being and future happiness. Children and youth enter foster care or child welfare systems when there is a problem of violence, abuse, neglect, or crisis in their home of origin. While a healthy foster placement might help a child come to terms with such hardships, a poor placement or an untimely aging out of the system without achieving permanence carries lifelong consequences, leaving young people at increased risk of poor educational outcomes, homelessness, unemployment, early parenthood, and substance use.
