Dr. Hamid Barkhordar, DDS, MMSc is our staff orthodontist who helps Santa Barbara kids, teens, and adults transform their smiles with the latest tools and techniques.
Dr. Hamid received specialized orthodontics training at Harvard's School of Dental Medicine after earning his Doctorate of Dental Surgery degree at the University of Southern California (USC) School of Dentistry. He attended Hope International University (HIU) in Fullerton, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology and played collegiate soccer. Following graduation, he pursued his lifelong interest in healthcare at the University of Southern California (USC) School of Dentistry, where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. After several years practicing as a general dentist, Dr. Ghalambor discovered his true passion lay in saving teeth and alleviating pain through endodontics. He returned to USC to complete his specialty training in Endodontics, advancing his clinical expertise and microsurgical skills. During his years at USC, Dr. Ghalambor served as Class President for four consecutive years and participated in multiple global dental outreach programs in Belize, Cambodia, Nicaragua, and Panama, providing vital dental care to underserved communities. He also contributed locally through USC’s Mobile Dental Clinic, serving families across Greater Los Angeles. If you don’t use a retainer after your braces are removed, your teeth will gradually shift back to their pre-treatment position. Retainers also stabilize your bite, help properly align your gums with your jawbones, and maintain room for new teeth or wisdom teeth to emerge in younger patients. How Do I Know if I Need an Orthodontic Retainer? If you’ve had braces, you need a dental retainer. You should begin using it immediately after the braces are removed and follow the doctor’s instructions to preserve the results of your treatment. What Are Permanent Dental Retainers? A permanent dental retainer is made from a metal wire and is bonded to the back of your front teeth with a special adhesive. It fixes these teeth in place to prevent them from shifting again. The advantages of permanent retainers are many; you don’t have to worry about losing or breaking them. You don’t have to be concerned about missing wear time or if they belong to your child, lack of compliance. They’re also invisible when worn. The primary disadvantage of permanent retainers is that some patients find them uncomfortable. What Are Removable Hawley Wire Retainers? What Are Clear Plastic Removable Dental Retainers? These are a type of removable dental retainer made from clear BPA-free plastic that is custom molded to fit your mouth. They are similar to Invisalign ® clear retainers. They are both less visible and less bulky than Hawley Wire dental retainers and they are less likely to impact your speech. She earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from Nova Southeastern University School of Dental Medicine in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. Following dental school, she completed a hospital-based residency at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center, where she received advanced training in complex dental and medical cases. She went on to earn her postdoctoral degree in Endodontics, refining her expertise in root canal therapy and microscopic endodontic techniques. Before relocating to Southern California, Dr. Pruss practiced in New York City for 12 years, where she developed a reputation for her precision, compassion, and commitment to patient comfort. She is a proud member of the American Association of Endodontists, the American Dental Association, and the California Dental Association.
