You have the choice of two resolutions for having your photos scanned to digital, either 300 PPI or 600 PPI.  Either option is a high-resolution scan that yields beautiful digital images and reprinting up to the size of the original photograph; 300 PPI is most common.  If you plan on having prints made larger than the original size, then 600 PPI is advised. Please speak with one of our technicians if you are unclear about what resolution may be best. Materials That We Scan Large & Small Loose Photos Digital Roots Studio offers digital scanning for all size images, we can even scan scrapbooks or photo albums you have laying around your house. By default we output to a high quality JPEG image compression 10, and for an additional fee you can receive back an 8/16 bitt TIFF image. Web upload, flash drive, hard drive & data disc are some of the ways you can receive back your digital files. Scarpbooks/Photo Albums Digital Roots Studio can scan photo albums and scrapbooks but it is on a case by case basis, please call to speak about your albums/scrapbooks to see if Digital Roots Studio is able to work with you. Important info to know is the size of the album pages, do you want full page scans or individual images digital images back and are the photos falling out of the album or glued in. Two Scanning Options: Raw Scan or Pro Scan Raw Scan Example - Photo Raw scan output, or untouched, is when you receive the image back without any post production work done on the image. Raw scan is suggested for clients who have experience using photo editing applications like Photoshop, and would like to do their own post production on the photo, or who simply want the image backed-up for preservation. Additional Examples Pro Scan Example - Photo With pro scan you will get a folder with the touched raw images, in addition to a folder that has all the final images that have had post production work. Pro scan includes cropping the image border, photo rotation, and color correction. This provides a view-ready collection without any additional efforts on your part. North Berkeley, CA Photo Scanning FAQ How do I convert my photographs to digital format? You have two options when it comes to the digitization of your photographs. You can invest in a photo scanner and digitize the photographs yourself, or you can hire a company like Digital Roots Studio do do the scanning to digital for you. Do my photographs need to be organized? No, you don’t need to organize your photographs prior to dropping off. We receive photographs from our clients various ways. Some clients will organize the photographs prior to scanning in folders by subject and/or year. We ask that all photographs be in groupings of no less than 10 photos per grouping. What resolution can my photos be scanned at? We scan photographs at 300ppi or 600ppi to digital JPEG format. If you want your photographs scanned at a higher resolution then please give us a call to talk about your scanning project. Can you scan my family photo albums and family scrapbooks scanned to digital? Yes, we can scan your family photo albums and photo scrapbooks. Additional fees may be applied b/c of special handling as well as album access fee’s, so please reach out to speak about your scanning project prior to dropping off. How do I get back the digital images of my photographs after they are scanned? The digital images can be given back to you on a USB empty drive that you supply, you can buy a drive from us, DVD-ROM or we can do a web upload for an additional fee. (not a cloud storage. Download only available for one month before auto deletion. How many photographs do I have? Its not possible to know without counting every photography you want to have scanned. But one thing you can do to get a rough estimate, is to stack the photos and measure the stack. About one inch of photos is 100-110 photos. What film types are you able to transfer into digital format? We are able to transfer 8mm film, Super8 film & 16mm film into digital computer format or playable DVD. What resolution is the film transferred at? Your film can be scanned at SD 720x480, HD 1920x1080, and we will soon be offering 2k & 4k film transfer. Please ask about 2k & 4k, if you are interested. Do you transfer sound film? Yes, we can transfer Super8mm sound film as well as 16mm optical sound. WE CANT transfer 16mm magnetic sound at this time. What format will my computer files be once they are converted into digital format? You have the choice of MP4, MOV (Quicktime) or AVI. MP4 files are compatible on most platforms, and MOV usually defaults to Mac, and AVI to PC. If I give you a box of film reels, then how will the digital files be organized? We number every film reel that we receive prior to transfer, and you will have a corresponding digital file with a number that matches up to the numbered reel. If you want the reels to be in a certain order, then please number them prior to drop off or arrange in the preferred order and then we will number them. Whats the difference between the Blu-Ray disc and the DVD disc? If you decide on HD output and want a disc back, then it will need to go on a Blu-Ray disc, but with standard def transfer we can put the footage on a DVD-R. 10 hrs of standard definition can be put onto a Blu-Ray disc, but you must a have a Blu-Ray player to play a Blu-Ray disc. Track separation is possible for music recordings with clear audio gaps between the songs, and for spoken word recordings, we can place track markers every 5 minutes if you like. We can transfer micro-cassette tapes, audio cassette tapes, mini-disc, DAT tapes, 1/4 inch reel to reels that have a diameter of 7/10 inches. What are the ouptut options for my audio? We can output to playable CD (80 minutes) or computer file mp3, wav or AIFF. Do my audio reels need to be baked? Sticky shed syndrome is a common occurrance with audio reel to reel tapes. If your tapes are showing signs of sticky shed syndrome, then we will let you know and suggest “baking” of the reels in order to get the best results from the transfer. Can you repair my audio cassette tapes? Yes, we can repair the audio cassette tapes, the cost is $15 per tape. What if my media is blank? You will not be charged for blank media. Do you create track markers for CDs and/or output files? We can create track markers on commercially made audio tapes/reels, and we can do our best to create track markers on live musical recordings that don’t have clear track endings. Do you give me my materails back? Yes, we give back all audio cassette tapes and reels once the project is complete. If you want us to recycle your tapes/reels, then just let us know.
