What are Implant Dentures? Conventional Removable Dentures commonly use prosthetic acrylic teeth mounted on an acrylic base, which appear as the gum tissues. They can be used to replace multiple or all the missing teeth depending on the requirement of the individual patient. Implants dentures are similar to conventional dentures, but with the addition of dental implants to hold them in place. Titanium implants will be fixed to the jawbone in specific places as determined by the dentist and the denture requirements. The dentures will have special attachments that help to hold them firmly against the implants. There are commonly 2 common types of implant dentures: Implant Overdentures and a Fixed Hybrid Prosthesis. Implant Overdenture: This method is relatively less expensive than a fixed hybrid prosthesis. Depending on the bone quality and needs of the patient, typically 2-4 implants will be place in each jaw and special attachments will be placed inside the denture to attach to the implants. This method requires the patient to remove the dentures for regular cleaning. This method can be used for patients with thick and thin jaw bones as Small Diameter Implants are available for those patient with very thin jawbone. Regular dental visits are necessary to check the health of the gums, implants, denture, and its attachments. For some patients who have a well-fitting denture, but it is loose, this procedure can also allow us to retrofit an existing denture, in order to save on cost. Fixed Hybrid Prosthesis: This method is for those patients who want to permanently attach the denture to the implants. This is great option for those patients who want to have less denture material covering their gums for a more enjoyable experience when chewing and tasting food. This type of prosthesis can be made with a standard acrylic or a stronger and more lifelike material called zirconia. Because the dentures are attached, regular dental visits are necessary to check the health of the gums, implants, and prosthesis. Why should I choose implant dentures? Implant dentures offer higher stability and prevent the prosthetic from moving while chewing or talking. They allow a patient to express virtually all their bite force, unlike a conventional denture resting on the gums that cause people to lose 80% of their bite force. With dental implants fixed to the jawbone, the chances of jawbone deterioration are significantly reduced. This way, your facial structure would stay unchanged and you would look younger for a longer period of time. Depending on the situation, this can increase the lifespace of a denture. The aesthetics of implant supported dentures are amazing. They look just like natural teeth and don’t give away easily. Procedure: During the initial visit, a 3D CBCT scan is taken to evaluate the jawbone. Video scans or molds of the jaws will be taken to create either dentures or a custom surgical guide to allow more minimally invasive surgery. During the implant surgery, local anesthesia will be used to numb the gums. Since there is generally more volume of bone at the front of the jaw than at the back, implants will tend to be fixed at the frontal portion of the jawbone. After the implant site has healed completely, the dentures will be placed on them and made sure the fit is perfect. Please call now to schedule or confirm any appointments. Please read below for our office procedures during your visit. As of May 19, 2020, 42 states are re-opening dental offices for elective and non-emergency procedures. We are excited to be part of this re-opening. We will follow the latest guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as of May 19, 2020. Please read through carefully and feel free to reach out to our office if you have any questions or concerns. When arriving to the office, please bring your own face covering (cloth, surgical, or respirator mask). If you don’t have one, we will provide one for you. The CDC recommends 6 feet between people who are not wearing a face covering. When that is not possible, or if you are at a dental facility, you are required to wear one. We ask that no more than one parent/guardian/caregiver/translator come with the patient. If that person’s presence is not required during treatment, we will ask them to wait in their car. If there are concerns waiting in the car (i.e. a hot day and no air conditioning available), you can stay in our lobby. You should stay clear of “traffic areas” and you will be required to keep a mask on the during your stay. Anyone who chooses to wait in the office, if they can’t wait outside or in their car, will be asked NOT to have conversations on their phone or walk around. You will need to stay seated. When checking in, you will be asked to use hand sanitizer before you touch anything else. A temperature check will be performed on your forehead with a non-contact infrared thermometer. If your temperature is over 100.4 Fahrenheit, we will confirm with an oral thermometer using a disposable sleeve. Patient’s with a temperature over 100.4 Fahrenheit will be asked to reappoint 2-3 weeks later. If you are having a dental emergency, we can discuss your specific situation in private before reappointing. You will be asked to sign a COVID-19 screening questionnaire and release form. If you are experiencing a fever over 100.4 Fahrenheit (not related to a dental infection), cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, chills, muscle pain, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, please reappoint 2-4 weeks later. If you have any concerns before entering the office and would prefer to wait in your car, you can call or text us when you arrive at 650-988-9458. Our lobby will have space between chairs as well as HEPA air filtration. We have temporarily removed beverages, magazines, and other shared items. We ask that you bring your own beverages in a sealed container/bottle. Open beverages will not be allowed. Each treatment room will be enclosed with drapes and have their own HEPA air filter to give each patient their own isolated space. Due to this, there will NOT be room for any additional person accompanying the patient. If you need to accompany the patient, please call our office and let us know ahead of time. By not pre-arranging this, we may not be able to accommodate the accompanying person.</b > Before treatment begins, you will be asked to pre-rinse with a mouthwash to help decrease any potential virus in your mouth. Please let us know if you have a sensitive tooth that may hurt from rinsing with a cold solution. You will be asked to keep your mask on if you are seated in the treatment room, but not being treated. When leaving the treatment room, you will be asked to keep your face covering on. We will give time between patients to allow proper disinfection protocol, as provided by the CDC and OSHA. If you are late for your appointment and your treatment will delay the next patient’s appointment, we will either need to reduce the amount of treatment provided that day, or reschedule your appointment entirely. Depending on the schedule, and your specific appointment type, your appointment could be delayed as much as 1 month for dental treatment or 2-3 months for a hygiene visit.</b > We ask that you be early to your appointment, but wait in your car. If we can accommodate you because the patient before was dismissed earlier than expected, we will do our best to take care of your. For any recession defect, there has to be loss of bone around the tooth in order for the gums to recede. Orthodontic treatment: A common example is when gum recession happens after orthodontic treatment. When the tooth and root is pushed beyond the natural contour of the jaw bone, the tooth is essentially pushed out of the bone. If a person has thin gum tissue, the gum recession can begin to express even from normal daily toothbrushing and dental cleanings. Thin Gingival Biotype: Some people have thick gum tissue, some medium-thick, and some thin gum tissue. Thin gum tissue, unfortunately, leaves you susceptible to gum recession when the tissue is “over-stimulated” from hard brushing or trauma to the teeth from a bite that is not even. In addition, teeth clenching/grinding at night is also classified as “trauma” as excessive forces will cause bone loss and gum recession. Because the cause can be highly varied, close examination is needed to identify the cause before treating the recession in order to increase the success of treatment. Some people will experience pain or bleeding gums when brushing or eating. Some may have sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweets. Some people with very little or poor quality tissue may be prone to continued gum recession and bone loss if not treated in a timely manner. What is gum grafting? Gum grafting is a surgical process to either replace thin tissue with thicker tissue or to cover exposed roots of teeth. Depending on the individual scenario, an examination is needed to evaluated how the recession defect will be treated. Some factors that are considered are the quality of tissue (thin vs. thick), type of tissue present (attached vs. mucosal tissue), and how much bone loss is present. How is a gum grafting surgery carried out? There are 2 main types of gum grafting surgery: Root Coverage Graft & Free Gingival Graft. A Free Gingival Graft is performed when a patient doesn’t have any firm attached (keratinized) tissue over the root. The main goal of this procedure is not to covered expose roots, but rather create a zone of thick attached tissue to protect the teeth from continued recession. This is done by taking some tissue from the palate (roof of the mouth) where there is an abundance of thick tissue and literally transferring it over to the area being treated. A Root Coverage Graft is performed when a patient has root exposure and wants to cover them to restore the normal draping of the gums around the teeth. After mobilizing the receded gums, gum tissue is place over the teeth and the mobilized gums are lifted to cover the graft. When this is done, the gum tissue now becomes thicker and corrects the defect. He has received various certifications throughout his career. Among them are certifications in Dental Implantology from the Nobel Biocare Training Institute and the United States Dental Institute for Orthodontics. Multiple certifications from completions of mini-residencies and advanced training for the treatment of TMJ and Craniofacial Pain Disorders and Dental Sleep Medicine from the TMJ and Sleep Therapy Centres International, the Bay Area Center for Craniomandibular Disorders, the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain, and the UCLA Dental Sleep Medicine Mini-Residency with years of additional training and putting these techniques into clinical practice, he has shown proficiency in the fields of Dental Implantology, Orthodontic Braces and Functional Appliance Therapy, TMJ and Craniofacial Pain Disorders, and Dental Sleep Medicine. He has attained Board-Certifications with both the American Board of Craniofacial Pain and the American Board of Craniofacial Dental Sleep Medicine and has achieved Fellowships with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain. Dr. Lee continually seeks to better his knowledge and skill in order to provide his patients with truly comprehensive care. Dr. Lee is married to his wife Ashley and loves to play with his sons, Colin and Caden. Please call now to schedule or confirm any appointments. Please read below for our office procedures during your visit. As of May 19, 2020, 42 states are re-opening dental offices for elective and non-emergency procedures. We are excited to be part of this re-opening. We will follow the latest guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) as of May 19, 2020. Please read through carefully and feel free to reach out to our office if you have any questions or concerns. When arriving to the office, please bring your own face covering (cloth, surgical, or respirator mask). If you don’t have one, we will provide one for you. The CDC recommends 6 feet between people who are not wearing a face covering. When that is not possible, or if you are at a dental facility, you are required to wear one. We ask that no more than one parent/guardian/caregiver/translator come with the patient. If that person’s presence is not required during treatment, we will ask them to wait in their car. If there are concerns waiting in the car (i.e. a hot day and no air conditioning available), you can stay in our lobby. You should stay clear of “traffic areas” and you will be required to keep a mask on the during your stay. Anyone who chooses to wait in the office, if they can’t wait outside or in their car, will be asked NOT to have conversations on their phone or walk around. You will need to stay seated. When checking in, you will be asked to use hand sanitizer before you touch anything else. A temperature check will be performed on your forehead with a non-contact infrared thermometer. If your temperature is over 100.4 Fahrenheit, we will confirm with an oral thermometer using a disposable sleeve. Patient’s with a temperature over 100.4 Fahrenheit will be asked to reappoint 2-3 weeks later. If you are having a dental emergency, we can discuss your specific situation in private before reappointing. You will be asked to sign a COVID-19 screening questionnaire and release form. If you are experiencing a fever over 100.4 Fahrenheit (not related to a dental infection), cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, chills, muscle pain, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, please reappoint 2-4 weeks later. If you have any concerns before entering the office and would prefer to wait in your car, you can call or text us when you arrive at 650-988-9458. Our lobby will have space between chairs as well as HEPA air filtration. We have temporarily removed beverages, magazines, and other shared items. We ask that you bring your own beverages in a sealed container/bottle. Open beverages will not be allowed. Each treatment room will be enclosed with drapes and have their own HEPA air filter to give each patient their own isolated space. Due to this, there will NOT be room for any additional person accompanying the patient. If you need to accompany the patient, please call our office and let us know ahead of time. By not pre-arranging this, we may not be able to accommodate the accompanying person.</b > Before treatment begins, you will be asked to pre-rinse with a mouthwash to help decrease any potential virus in your mouth. Please let us know if you have a sensitive tooth that may hurt from rinsing with a cold solution. You will be asked to keep your mask on if you are seated in the treatment room, but not being treated. When leaving the treatment room, you will be asked to keep your face covering on. We will give time between patients to allow proper disinfection protocol, as provided by the CDC and OSHA. If you are late for your appointment and your treatment will delay the next patient’s appointment, we will either need to reduce the amount of treatment provided that day, or reschedule your appointment entirely. Depending on the schedule, and your specific appointment type, your appointment could be delayed as much as 1 month for dental treatment or 2-3 months for a hygiene visit.</b > We ask that you be early to your appointment, but wait in your car. Please do not check in early, however you can call/text us if you are early. If we can accommodate you because the patient before was dismissed earlier than expected, we will do our best to take care of your. If you are too early, we may ask you to wait in your car, if appropriate. If we are running behind, please be patient with us. Some patients may need more TLC as we do not want to rush treatment. Then, we may need time to properly disinfect the treatment room. However, we will do our best to pace the appointments so there is ample time and patient’s do not get delayed.
