With two locations across the San Francisco Bay Area, we’ve become famous around the world for our razor-cut shag haircuts and sleek French bobs. We’re also known for teaching home stylists and professionals how to fine-tune their skills. We offer a range of popular hair cutting and styling classes both online and in-person. (Learn more here) We care deeply about our impact on the environment and only use natural, eco-conscious, organic hair products. You can shop some of our favorite organic brands and eco-friendly hair products here . Our top priority is making you feel beautiful for who you are: Neurodiverse and non-binary clients of all ages, genders, ethnicities, and backgrounds are celebrated here. We want to frame your best features, not fit you into a box. Founded in 1998 by wild cohorts, artists, and best friends: Jayne Matthews & Chri Longstreet Their vision first came to life in a vacant church in the vibrant Lower Haight district, where the two created an art gallery and hair salon space so they could experiment freely and hone their craft. The first Edo Salon had no sign, website, email, or business cards: Jayne and Chri attracted clients by word-of-mouth. They earned a reputation for their unique, hyper-personalized haircuts. The space soon became a springboard for trendsetting street fashion. The pair had built a tight-knit creative community based on art, fashion, and fearless individuality . In 2019, they opened a second Edo location in Oakland, extending their passion to a wider clientele. Now known around the world for their pioneering techniques and artful, individualized approach, Chri and Jayne spend time teaching other stylists (both amateur and professional) how to master their iconic haircutting techniques. The focus has always been on individuality: celebrating the weird and wonderful beauty that makes each person unique. I want: --> volume & lift volume & lift definition definition volume & lift volume & lift definition definition Cleansing Cleansing Cleansing Cleansing Volume & Lift for flat, fine, or oily hair Undressed by Hairstory What it is: A lightweight texturizing spray for people who don’t love the feeling of product in their hair Why we love it: This texturizing spray is light as air, and never feels crunchy, starchy, or chunky. It’s perfect for people with fine hair. Use generously at the roots to create extra volume and give your style a natural, lived-in texture. Buy Now Buy Now Texture Mist by Afterworld Organics What it is: a texturizing spray that adds a bit of extra grit Why we love it: This texturizing spray is perfect for people who want more voluminous hair. A bit stronger than Undressed, it’s still a pretty lightweight option that works best for fine hair when sprayed at the roots. We like using this mist on bangs that are starting to look fine or oily. Buy Now Buy Now Mare by Reverie What it is: our strongest, volume-building salt spray Why we love it: This product is incredible for beefing up your hair’s volume. We use it to create the kind of vintage-inspired height we love in the crown area of a shag or French bob. It creates a gritty texture reminiscent of post-ocean-swim hair. Ideal for oily and flat hair in need of some serious body-building. A little goes a long way. Buy Now Buy Now Powder by Hairstory What it is: our favorite dry shampoo Why we love it: Powder works on both light and dark hair, unlike most powdered dry shampoos. This stuff absorbs oils and leaves your hair voluminous and starchy. It’s the best on bangs, and our go-to solution on dirty hair days. Buy Now Buy Now Jelly by Cult and King What it is: a texturizing, sea salt “jelly” Why we love it: This unique salt jelly adds a ton of starchy texture and creates serious volume. It’s our favorite product for fine, curly hair because it creates those big shapes we love. Try this on damp hair and then dry with a diffuser: It’s like magic. Buy Now Buy Now definition FOR FLUFFY, PUFFY, OR FRIZZY HAIR Hair Balm by Hairstory What it is: a satin-finish defining cream Why we love it: This is our number one go-to product for short and textured hair. It works wonderfully to create definition in curls and waves, and we like to use it to define the ends of shags, bangs, or bobs as well. Plus, it never gets greasy or crunchy. Buy Now Buy Now Grooming Lotion by Afterworld Organics What it is: a lighter version of Hair Balm Why we love it: This hair cream offers slightly less defining hold than Hairstory’s Hair Balm, but it’s silkier and more moisturizing. It adds lovely definition and a lot of shine. We recommend this one for extremely dry hair. Buy Now Buy Now Milk by Reverie What it is: a super-lightweight smoothing cream Why we love it: Milk is the lightest of our hair creams– so light it almost feels like liquid powder. Perfect for either fine or coarse hair, this stuff is weightless and very effective for smoothing frizz and flyaways. Buy Now Buy Now Rake by Reverie What it is: a super-strong hair paste Why we love it: This one’s for people who want serious definition. Rake creates a messy, rock-n-roll texture that makes a statement. Great for people trying to achieve noticeable, sexy, long-lasting bedhead. Buy Now Buy Now Moisture Lock by Afterworld Organics What it is: a moisturizing serum for dry hair Why we love it: This serum not only adds moisture, it locks moisture into your hair with a weightless finish. Ideal for curls and waves as well as dry and thirsty hair. Buy Now Buy Now Cleansing FOR all hair types New Wash by Hair Story What is is: a toxic-free, no-foam cream cleanser Why we love it: Our number one choice for cleansing all hair types is Hairstory’s New Wash. It’s a new kind of shampoo that does not foam or create suds like most shampoos. (It’s better!) Foaming makes your hair look fluffy and big right after washing, but it also strips your hair of natural oils. New wash doesn’t do that: It gets your head clean, but your hair doesn’t lose that natural moisture. Our favorite formulas are the original (which works for pretty much every hair texture) and the rich formula (which is ideal for highly processed, colored hair and extremely dry, coarse hair). Note: Hairstory recommends their “deep” formula for fine hair, but we prefer using the original formula (and a little powder at the roots as needed). This combo creates piecy, separated texture without weight, leaving fine hair with both volume AND natural oils. For more coarse and damaged hair, we like using the “rich” formula. For everyone else, we recommend the original formula. Make sure to buy the scalp massage brush, especially if it’s your first time using New Wash. It will stimulate your scalp and help get the product into your roots. And it feels amazing! JAYNE MATTHEWS Hairstylist, Educator, and Co-owner of Edo Salon Jayne Matthews has amassed a cult following (and over 155K Instagram followers) for her unique approach to cutting hair. Raised by artists and rebellious from birth, she started cutting her own hair as a kid to make a fashion statement, developing a knack for face-framing styles that flattered her best features. She worked as a hairstylist for five years, drawing inspiration from 1960s Paris fashion and the iconic 1970s rock and roll period, before opening Edo Salon and Gallery with Chri Longstreet in 1998. Using nothing but her favorite tool, a straight razor, Jayne earned a reputation for her organic, free-hand shags and delicate, individualized, face-framing layers, catering her cuts to each client’s unique hair texture and face shape. Read more Jayne advocates for natural over chemically-altered options, helping clients and other stylists avoid harsh chemicals, synthetics, and toxic hair products. “Your hair’s natural oils are the best styling agent available,” she says. “Hair shouldn’t be forced into an unnatural shape or blow-dried into submission. I’ve made it a mission to push the industry to take notice: There are so many harmful toxins and synthetics that plague beauty salons, hairstylists, and clients.” Edo Salon uses only earth-friendly, organic, eco-conscious tools and materials. Now famous for her signature razor-cutting methods, Jayne is responsible for popularizing the shag haircut and prompting people around the world to throw away their curling irons. As Creative Director of Edo, her focus has shifted from working directly with clients to full-time education, sharing her iconic techniques with both amateur and professional hairstylists. For the past several years, she’s traveled the globe teaching thousands of stylists her distinct method of "carving petals” to frame the face. “I believe people have the right to cut their own hair,” she says. “It’s empowering. I want to empower home-stylists to experiment, and inspire professional stylists to stay relevant in an ever-changing industry. We’re all artists.” Jane’s work and international haircutting classes have been featured in The New York Times, Forbes, and CNN. Jayne is currently offering several online haircutting classes designed for non-professional, home stylists: Learn to cut your own bangs, how to style curly hair to boost volume and definition, and how to style bangs and crown layers to emphasize end definition. CHRI LONGSTREET Hairstylist, Educator, and Co-owner of Edo Salon Chri Longstreet is a master of details when it comes to cutting hair. An expert in both razor-cutting and working with scissors, she helped develop Edo’s world-famous, organic method of free-hand haircutting. She sees connection as an important part of her work, and takes the time to learn about each client’s personality and taste before tailoring a unique style to frame their features. “I always want to hear about their lives,” she says. “It’s about forming real, long-lasting relationships with my clients. I remember their likes and dislikes as well as their life stories. All that goes into the work.” She loves the ever-changing nature of her work, helping clients evolve their own personal style along with the shifting nature of fashion. Read more Chri was trained by the original Creative Directors of famed NYC salon Bumble and Bumble as well as Vidal Sassoon and Soho-based celebrity hair stylist Nick Arrojo. She’s always ready to try something new, and her passion for discovering the latest styling and cutting techniques infuses Edo with fresh inspiration year-round. She’s taken every cutting class offered at Bumble and Bumble in the past twenty years, training her eye to identify specific facial features and shapes as well as hair textures and cowlicks, which helps her create specific styles to match each client’s look and personal style. Her extensive knowledge benefits everyone at Edo: She’s the lead educator for the salon’s up-and-coming stylists. As co-founder and Creative Director of the salon and gallery, Chri also curates the salon’s art collection and fine-tunes the space’s eclectic, sophisticated design, gathering pieces from vintage shops across the Bay Area. She often weaves her profound love for vintage shapes, retro fashion, and Middleeastern textile colors and patterns into her work: “I draw inspiration from runway fashion, streetwear, even old movies. I love 1920s flapper bobs, Jane Fonda’s 70s shag in Klute, and Princess Diana’s famous feathered bob in the 80s. I like to take an iconic vintage cut and give it a modern twist.” San Francisco Stylists Chri Longstreet Owner, Educator, Haircutting Specialist (She/Her/They) Email:
