Take The EF Support Quiz Executive Function Specialists was founded in 2021 to help students learn skills that improve their quality of life.  [ An open letter to parents and educators ] Helping students build executive function skills is about changing lives, not just completing assignments.   As parents and educators, we’re often pulled into managing missed deadlines, calming meltdowns, and repeatedly reminding students of what needs to get done.   It’s exhausting.   But it doesn’t have to be this way.   At Executive Function Specialists, we believe that teaching life skills like time management, organization, and task initiation is just as important as teaching content.   When students learn how to manage their responsibilities, the weight doesn’t fall solely on you.   We aren't trying to fix the system.   We are giving students the tools to succeed in spite of it.   Whether it’s through articles, courses, or one-on-one coaching, we’re here to help you empower students to take control—so you don’t have to carry the load alone.   The goal isn’t to do more. It’s to help students do it for themselves. You might be here because you've noticed a pattern of missing assignments, low test grades, and avoidance of communication with teachers from your child for some time. Or perhaps you are a savvy educator who has realized that some of your kids need assignments broken into manageable chunks with clear deadlines; otherwise, they just don't get completed. You've heard the words "executive functioning" mentioned, but you're not clear on what they mean or encompass, and you want to learn more. What is Executive Function coaching in a nutshell? 🌰 At its core, EF coaching is the science and art of guiding learners to strengthen their own capacity to get things done . What makes this process unique is that it focuses on empowering children and parents to do the heavy lifting through the repetition of habits like: Plotting out deadlines Organizing assignments into manageable chunks Setting timers to task initiate Updating teachers on progress or asking for extensions and feedback And so much more... When those habits are the center of the interaction with the child (rather than content), they blossom into essential skills that research tells us enhance the quality of life for students for decades to come. Who Is Executive Function Coaching For? While this approach can apply to anyone to some degree, it is essential for: Middle school students High school students University students Especially those students who are trying to keep up with society's demands while experiencing massive psychological and physiological growth. Table of Contents Chapter 1: What are executive functions? Chapter 2: What is executive function coaching? Chapter 3: Why is executive function coaching important? Chapter 4: How do I find an executive function coach? Chapter 1: What Are Executive Functions? Executive functions are brain processes that allow people to: Plan Initiate Complete goals They are also the source of our ability to reflect on and evaluate the approaches we take to problem-solving and refine our processes to improve our productivity and efficiency . The executive functions primarily stem from the frontal lobe , which sits directly behind the forehead, and is the largest of the brain's four paired lobes in the cerebral cortex. This is the last area of the brain to develop and accounts for about 40% of the human brain in most adults. What is the frontal lobe responsible for? The frontal lobe is a beautifully complex section of the brain and is responsible for many basic abilities (and complex ones) that make us uniquely human, including: Language production Social interaction Problem-solving or "playing with information" Reward-seeking behaviors, also known as motivation Inhibition or impulse control Maintaining focus And more! Harvard University's Center on the Developing Child , defines executive functions as: ...the mental processes that enable us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks successfully. Just as an air traffic control system at a busy airport safely manages the arrivals and departures of many aircraft on multiple runways, the brain needs this skill set to filter distractions, prioritize tasks, set and achieve goals, and control impulses. Caregivers and educators who are looking for an easy way to explain this complex concept to others can use the acronym P.O.S.I.T.I.V.E. to describe EF skills, which stand for: What are executive function skills? Regardless of which definition you subscribe to, this is certain: Children with stronger EF skills have better academic, social and vocational outcomes when observed over the span of their lives. Knowing this, it is vital to teach students, families and educators these essential abilities in order to enhance the quality of life for students worldwide (especially those with ADHD, aka Executive Dysfunction). How are executive function skills assessed? EF skills can be assessed both formally or informally. For the informed educator, mental health professional or parent, it is quite apparent when a child is struggling with this skill set. Common indicators may include: Poor time management or time blindness Emotional dysregulation Chronic disorganization of both physical and digital items Apprehension or avoidance of communicating with teachers Decreased motivation due to constant overwhelm Addiction to "unproductive" behaviors such as YouTubing or video gaming Reduced problem-solving abilities Oftentimes, due to the lack of abilities in the above areas, students have additional executive function challenges such as: Diminished sense of self-worth Low-grades Decreased desire to continue with schooling past the required thresholds Declining grades Loneliness and feelings of isolation Fragmented relationships with parents To be certain that the issues are related to executive functioning, licensed professionals will use a range of tools to evaluate the abilities of a client. The licensed professionals who conduct testing for EF issues include: Neuropsychologists School psychologists Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) Physicians Therapists What diagnoses are related to executive dysfunction? Often, EF challenges will be connected to a more formal diagnosis of a learning disability or mental health challenge. These include: ADHD Traumatic brain injury Anxiety Depression Dyslexia Dyscalculia Non-verbal learning disorder (NVLD) Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) Tourette's syndrome Less formal assessment approaches are also completed by unlicensed professionals, which include: Educational therapists Executive function coaches Academic coaches When EF challenges are diagnosed, it is also the role of the assessor to make recommendations around the next steps for parents and students. In addition to medication, coaching to support students struggling to manage the demands of school and life has been shown to be an effective and trustworthy approach. Chapter 2: What Is Executive Function Coaching? EF coaching is a designed alliance that empowers clients to improve their ability to experience successful outcomes in school and life . The alliance begins with an assessment of EF skills done by a coach or completed beforehand by an assessment professional. Once baseline data on the client's strengths, struggles, and goals are available, a support plan to enhance the essential abilities is developed with input from parents, teachers, and other allied professionals. One key element in this alliance is that the child or young adult MUST be involved in developing goals and the service plan. When adults reasonably center the student's voice throughout this cycle, the child begins to take executive ownership of both the procedures and the outcomes. This plan should include ways to improve study skills , and self-management skills , as well as strategies to compensate for working memory challenges that are often associated with ADHD, anxiety, traumatic brain injury, and other disabling conditions that impact executive functions. Learn more about our FTM process by clicking here .   Step 3: Weekly Sessions During the weekly coaching sessions our specialists will establish a designed alliance with our students that allows them to strengthen their executive function skills. Each of our specialists has been certified in the coaching methodology  designed by founder and master executive function coach, Sean G. McCormick and  completed the AB 1172 PBIS training.  We describe executive functioning skills as P.O.S.I.T.I.V.E. skills that include:    Planning Organization Self-advocacy Initiation Time management Inhibition management Visualizing outcomes  Evaluating priorities By guiding our students to address the most challenging dilemmas in their academic lives while explicitly teaching P.O.S.I.T.I.V.E. skills at the "point of performance," our student's begin to experience an expansion of their growth mindset, sense of resilience and overall engagement with the school process.   All sessions are held online  using a multi-sensory approach.  If requested, we will also check-in between sessions using a combination of solution-focused questioning and "proof-ability" requests, to support both task-initiation and follow through.  Learn more about our executive function coaching sessions by clicking here .   Step 5: Phase Out  Phase out is approached incrementally with the goal of helping students take ownership of their developing executive function skills, while reducing the intensity of our intervention to allow for independent practice. We recommend a minimum of 6 months of coaching to fully integrate and apply the P.O.S.I.T.I.V.E. skills with guidance, but many students benefit from a more extensive timeline due to the increasing demands on their executive skills as the transition into higher grade levels. My son has been working with them for the past two years and his progress has been outstanding. They have exceeded my expectations with his results. Ever since my son has started working with the team his executive function skills and time management skills have improved drastically. Ms. Ella and Ms. Lindsay worked very well one on one with him and Sean along with the rest of his team are great at helping my family advocate for son’s educational needs during IEP meetings. This has been one of the best investments I have made for my sons education, and we look forward to continue working with them." EFS Directory About Our Approach Team FAQ Pricing Our Process Reviews Book a Call Take the EF Support Quiz What is the EF Specialists process?  Our process for enhancing executive function skills is a five step process that includes an intake, assessment and weekly skill building meeting. Read below to learn about each step in more detail. How long does executive function coaching last?  Our experience has shown that establishing a robust coaching relationship and effectively teaching and practicing new skills require a certain duration. We require weekly meetings for our coaching services and ask for a commitment of 12 sessions. The 12-week period allows our coaches and students to develop a relationship, teach necessary skills, and give students ample opportunity to practice and integrate these skills into their daily lives. This structured timeline is essential for creating lasting change and ensuring that the improvements we work towards are sustainable. We've found that shorter engagements often do not provide enough time for substantial development and may lead to regression once coaching concludes. Our goal is to avoid a scenario where families feel they are starting over after prematurely ending the coaching process. However, we want to ensure our families feel comfortable and confident in their coaching matches. That’s why we offer a match guarantee. Should you find that the coach isn't the right fit for the client after the first session, we can work with your family to understand the issue and propose a solution 01 Inquiry Meeting  02 Matching & Assessment  03 Weekly Coaching Sessions  04 Family Team Meetings  05 Phase Out Step 1: The Inquiry Meeting The inquiry meeting is an opportunity for us to learn more about the transformation you would like to see occur while working with an executive functioning coach, as well as an opportunity for us to share more about our process to support your goals.   We also ask your student to describe the characteristics and experience they would like to have with their ideal coach, so we can match them appropriately.  Through a series of questions, we will collaboratively identify if we are a "right fit" for each other.  You can book your free inquiry meeting by clicking below. Book a free inquiry meeting Step 2: Matching During the matching process, we evaluate your student's current executive function needs and their preferences, then match them with one of our experienced specialists.   The cost of our registration and matching process can be found on our pricing page . This cost includes:   Matching your student with an appropriate executive function specialist  A review of any assessments, IEPs, 504 plans or other key documents you wish to provide Initial consultations with teachers, mental health providers and/or other professionals you would like to connect us with Step 3: Weekly Executive Function Coaching During the weekly executive function coaching sessions our specialists will establish a designed alliance with our students that allows them to strengthen their executive function skills. Each of our specialists has been certified in the coaching methodology  designed by founder, Sean McCormick.  We describe executive functioning skills as P.O.S.I.T.I.V.E. skills that include:    Planning Organization Self-advocacy Initiation Time management Inhibition management Visualizing outcomes  Evaluating priorities By guiding our students to address the most challenging dilemmas in their academic lives while explicitly teaching P.O.S.I.T.I.V.E. skills at the "point of performance," our students begin to experience an expansion of their growth mindset, sense of resilience and overall engagement with the school process.   All sessions are held online  using a multi-sensory approach  by one of our highly-skilled specialists .  If requested, we will also check-in between sessions using a combination of solution-focused questioning and "proof-ability" requests, to support both task-initiation and follow through.  The cost of enrolling in our program can be found on our pricing page.  Learn more about our executive function coaching sessions by clicking here .  Wondering what a typical EF coaching session looks like? Watch this video 👇 Step 4: Family Team Meeting The Family-Team Meeting (FTM) is an opportunity for all of the key stakeholders on your student's "team" to meet and engage in a process celebrating the wins (or micro-wins), identifying adjusted or new goals, or assigning responsibility and a timeline for implementation.  The key to a successful FTM is that it is run by a skilled facilitator who ensures that everyone has the opportunity to be heard while centering the student's voice as the driving force of the process.   The Family Team Meeting is usually held in place of a normal session every 4-6 weeks. If you ever have feedback for your specialist, the Family Team Meeting is a great place to work collaboratively to get your coaching goals met.  Learn why we hold Family Team Meetings by reading this article.  Step 5: Phase Out  Phase-out is approached incrementally to help students take ownership of their developing executive function skills while reducing the intensity of our intervention to allow for independent practice.   Since we work from a model requiring weekly sessions this could look like choosing a final bill date, then spreading the final four sessions across two months.   We suggest you discuss a plan with your specialist during a family team meeting.     We recommend a minimum of 6 months of coaching to fully integrate and apply the P.O.S.I.T.I.V.E. skills with guidance, but many students benefit from a more extensive timeline due to the increasing demands on their executive skills as they transition into higher grade levels. Frequently asked questions How long does support from EF Specialists last? Our support ranges from short term (3-6 months) to long-term (multi-year). We break our approach into three categories. Intervention phase: This includes family team meetings and multiple sessions per week with an specialist. Maintenance phase: This generally is one session per week with an EF specialist. Phase out: This would include 1-2 sessions per week with a para educator. What are the credentials of your specialists? All of our specialists have completed a comprehensive executive function training course authored by our founder, Sean McCormick. All of our specialists have Bachelor's Degrees and related exeperience, while most of our specialists have a Master's Degrees and related experience. I want to enroll Question and Answers Semester Success Blueprint Course FAQs What if the students in my EF class will feel like the lessons are saying things they already know? The problem with executive functioning is in the doing, more than the knowing. While the above statement is true for some students, it has NOT been my experience for the majority of them. Many students get overwhelmed by what feels to be an insurmountable take (writing an essay or preparing for an exam), and avoid those tasks because of this feeling. When they start to break things down into manageable steps and have someone nearby to body double with them, even if it is done online, they feel a sense of relief, empowerment, and even joy around the doing task. Many students don't know how to do school things like use Google Tasks, an error log, or email templates, and when they discover these pathways to getting things done in a structured manner, they start to develop a sense of self-efficacy and courage. If they already know these things, then the tweak that could be made is just being there with them as they apply the tools they are already familiar with. This is why I encourage parents and educators to complete the Semester Success Blueprint alongside your student. As it said on the wall of the classroom when I became a para educator back in 2013, "Teaching is is being near and involved." Do you offer institutional discounts? For 15 or more seats, we can offer a 20% discount per seat. With a purchase of 15 or more seats, we offer a complimentary 45-minute coaching session to help you plan how to incorporate the tools into your classroom. We also offer ongoing email support to ensure you can leverage them effectively. Would be possible to get a demo of some of the modules the students work through to see if it would be applicable to the students I work with? To schedule a free consult to learn about coaching for your child, visit: www.efspecialists.com/inquiry Are executive function specialists state licensed or can they practice anywhere in the US? Being an executive function specialist is not a licensed profession. It falls under the umbrella of coaching which is an unlicensed industry. This allows you to work across state boundaries. Because this profession is unlicensed, demonstrating proficiency and expertise is of the upmost importance. This is why Executive Function Specialists works hard to be the thought-leader in this burgeoning and in-demand industry and requires anyone who will be on our approved vendor list to meet the criteria above. What are the benefits of working at EF Specialists? In order to attract the most talented specialists and staff, we pay industry-leading rates, offer all eligible employees a 401(k) with a match, technology and professional development stipends, and compensate them for their administrative and training time.
