Nathan S. – Stanford University ABOUT SSAT The Secondary School Admissions Test (SSAT) is used for admission to private schools, boarding schools, and the military. It assesses students’ verbal, math, and reading skills. The Middle Level is for students currently in grades 5, 6, and 7. The Upper Level is for students currently in grade 8 and above. ABOUT ISEE The Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE) is used for admission to private middle schools and private high schools. All levels of the ISEE measure students’ verbal and quantitative reasoning skills. The Lower Level is for students currently in grades 4 and 5. The Middle Level is for students in grades 6 and 7. The Upper Level is for students in grades 8 through 11. ABOUT HSPT The High School Placement Test (HSPT) is primarily used by Catholic high schools to measure the verbal, math, and reading skills of students applying to 9th grade. The HSPT is administered by individual schools. Students must register for the HSPT through the prospective high school. Gloria S. – Pomona College ABOUT THE PSAT The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a standardized exam administered by the College Board and offered in the fall to juniors at most high schools. It tests students’ math, reading, and writing skills. The primary purpose of the PSAT/NMSQT is to familiarize students with the SAT, but it also serves the important function of determining a student’s eligibility for the National Merit Scholarship program. That means that of the millions of students who take the test, the 50,000 juniors with the top scores will qualify as Commended Students or Semifinalists and the top 15,000 scorers qualify as Finalists. These designations not only look great on college applications but can also mean major scholarship money. Like the SAT, the PSAT/NMSQT tests students’ skills in Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing; however, there is no Essay section. Students are given 2 hours and 45 minutes to complete the test.  The College Board also administers two additional versions of the PSAT: The PSAT 8/9 and the PSAT 10, offered to students in grades 8, 9, and 10 as their names indicate. Though these tests aren’t directly related to college scholarships, they do serve as good barometers of college readiness, as well as useful introductions to the SAT. 엘리트 교육그룹 박종환 회장】 엘리트학원에서 공부하면 SAT 고득점이 가능하다는 이야기는 한인 학부모들 사이에서 오랫동안 회자되어 온 이야기이다. 엘리트학원을 설립한지 28년만에 전 세계 6개국 46개 브랜치를 설립할 정도로 궤도에 올려놓은 박종환 엘리트 교육그룹 회장은 “학생들의 미래를 위해 진정으로 헌신하고 그들을 지극정성으로 교육한 교사와 직원들이 있었기에 오늘의 엘리트가 가능했다”고 강조했다. 똑똑하고 명석한 학생을 의미하는 엘리트를 상호로 정한 박종환 회장의 꿈은 자기 자신에 대해서 만족하고 행복한 삶을 영위하는 ‘해피 스튜턴트’를 지속적으로 양성하는 것이다. -엘리트학원의 성공비결은 ▲28년 전 1987년 12월 로랜하이츠에 개원하고 1988년 6월에 첫 수업을 진행했다. 연세대 2학년 때 UC어바인으로 유학 와 대학 졸업하는해 학원을 열었다. 사실 하버드 대학 입학에 대한 꿈이 있었는데 쉽지 않다는 것을 깨달았고 주변의 권유와 대학생활의 경험을 토대로 학원사업을 시작했다. 수학이나 영어 등 학과목을 가르치는 것보다 학부모와 학생들을 먼저 상담해 주고 커리큘럼을 개발하는데 치중했다. 진도를 따라오지 못하는 학생은 예습과 복습을 철저히 시키는 등 개인적으로 관리하는 한국식 교육방식을 채택했다. 또한 학생들의 변화를 위해서 상담하며 인성교육까지 실시했다. 시험문제 하나를 출제하더라도 아이들에게 영향을 미칠 수 있는 것을 선택했다. 이러한 과정을 통해 학부모들의 신뢰를 얻었다. 그동안 LA 폭동, 한국의 IMF 사태 등 어려움도 있었지만 이를 잘 극복하고 현재 미국뿐만 아니라 캐나다, 중국, 일본, 한국, 인도네시아 등 6개 국가의 46개 브랜치에서 1,000여명의 직원이 일하는 교육기업으로 성장했다. 1년에 보통 SAT 클래스에만 2만명이 등록하는데 60%가 중국 학생, 20%가 한인이며 이외에 인도계, 백인, 히스패닉 학생이 있다. 현재까지 수십만명의 학생이 엘리트학원을 거쳐 간 것 같다. 지금까지의 성장은 하나님의 역사라고 본다. -대학 입시뿐만 아니라 학생들이 졸업 후 유망 직종 취업을 위해 힘쓰고있는데 ▲학생들을 상담할 때 느끼는 것은 대부분이 자신의 미래를 잘 모르고 부모님이 바라는 것만 인지하는 정도이다. 그래서 먼저 학생들의 로드맵을 만드는 일에 치중한다. 즉 자신이 뭐가 되고 싶은지 들어보고 학생의 성격이 어떤지도 파악한다. 그래야 커리어 개발이 가능하기 때문이다. 그래서 엘리트에서 매년 주최하는 비전 엑스포에도 성공한 프로페셔널들이 출연해 강의를 하면서 학생들에게 비전을 심어준다. 엘리트학원 출신 전문인들이 대부분인데 이들도 스스로 멘토가 되어 주는 것에 자부심을 느낀다. 특히 컨설팅보다는 학부모와 학생들의 고충을 들어주고 해결하는 퍼스널 터치를 가미한 카운슬링을 강조하다보니 교사와 학생 사이에 진정한 사제관계가 형성되고 대학을 졸업하고 전문인이 된 후에도 후배 학생을 끌어주는 멘토 역할을 하는 것 같다. -엘리트가 추구하는 교육이념은 ▲문제해결 능력, 크리티컬 싱킹, 커뮤니테이션 스킬 함양 등이다. 미래의 리더를 키우겠다는 이념으로 이 세 가지를 마스터시키는 일에 치중하고 있다. 학교를 졸업하고 사회에 나갔을 때 준비된 리더를 만드는 것이 목표이다. 주변의 교육상황이 크게 달라졌다. 자녀들이 졸업해서 취업하기도 힘들고 무엇보다 학자금이 큰 문제이다. 학부에서 이것저것 다 들어보고 전공을 준비할 수 있는 여유가 없기 때문에 초·중·고등학교 때 미리 준비시키려고 한다. 특히 4학년부터 스피치&디베이트 클럽을 두고 학생들이 적극적으로 자기 의사를 발표하는 훈련을 시키고 있다. 이것이 결국 성공적인 대입으로 연결되기 때문이다. 궁극적으로 애플 스티브 잡스 CEO가 이야기한 것처럼 인문학을 제대로 가르쳐 생각을 다르게 하는 방법을 가르치고 싶다. -LA 한인상의 최우수 기업인상, 가주하원 아태문화 공로상을 받았는데 ▲엘리트는 LA를 시작으로 전 세계로 글로벌 마인드로 뻗어나간 교육기업이라고 보면 된다. 앞으로 유럽을 비롯해 제3세계 국가에도 진출할 계획이며 브랜치 수를 계속 확장해 나가려고 한다. 그런 의미에서 LA 한인상의에서 올해 수상자로 결정한 것 같다. 특히 2010년 5월10일 성공적인 기업경영을 인정받아 가주 하원으로부터 아태문화 공로상을 수상한 것이 영광스럽다. -엘리트의 커리큘럼은 어떻게 구성되나 ▲SAT가 주력인 것 같지만 ACT, AP, SAT Subject 준비반, 개인 과외지도, 발표 및 토론 프로그램 등이 있다. 특히 발표 및 토론 프로그램은 4 Locations — Elite Educational Institute Locations Test Prep Tutoring College Consulting For-Credit Courses Extracurriculars Resources Blog Contact Us 한국어 中文 日本語 REGISTER LOGIN Back Northern California Southern California Georgia Nevada Texas Virginia Canada Korea China Indonesia Japan Back View All Test Prep Programs SAT Boot Camp with UC Honors Credit (New!) The AP Chinese Language and Culture course is offered by Elite Open School, a WASC-accredited private school. (See Elite Open School’s A-G course list approved by the University of California.) Are there any prerequisites for this course? + At a minimum, completion of Chinese 3 or a course equivalent to an intermediate high proficiency level course; completion of Chinese 4 is recommended. Native and heritage speakers are also eligible to take this course. If you are a native or heritage speaker, a diagnostic test will be administered to assess your readiness. How long is this class? + The course is two semesters long offered during the school year (fall and spring semesters). You have a total of 33 weeks to complete the course after enrollment. Can I start the class any time? + No. You must begin the course on the course start date in mid-September. Can I complete this class in one semester? + The course is asynchronous, and you can work on lessons online at any time. You must complete weekly assignments by the due date, and most students take the full 33 weeks to complete the course. Is this class offered in the summer? + No. The course is offered only in the school year. How is this course taught? + The course content is delivered through an online platform through reading assignments, videos, and assignments. The course is asynchronous, and you can work on lessons online at any time. To ensure that you complete the course successfully, you will be required to attend two hours of live, online study sessions with our mentor who will monitor your progress and review the course assignments.
