THE HISTORY OF DUNGENESS CRAB IN SF Seafood has always been a mainstay in the San Francisco bay and more specifically throughout Fisherman’s Wharf (if you couldn’t tell by the name!). Dungeness crab from San Francisco has become the star of the show and is now world famous. Eating Dungeness Crab in San Francisco is a rite of passage and easily tops lists of must-do activities in SF. The reason for this isn’t just because it’s delicious, (although that is a huge reason), it is because it was integral to the Italian culture in SF in the late 1800’s and helped shape an entire neighborhood. What is now a delicacy used to be known as a pest in the fishing community. The dungeness crabs would snag and break fishing nets and fishermen would get frustrated with these crustaceans. It wasn’t until the early 1900s that Italian fishermen discovered how delicious these crabs tasted. These Italian immigrants took note of the commercial potential in what had been previously considered to be a pest. They eventually turned this ugly duckling into a regal swan. The fisherman first started by cooking and selling dungeness crab on the street. Word traveled fast around San Francisco and this dish soon became a must have by everyone. Fun fact: Dungeness crabs actually get their name from a town where they were first discovered, “Dungeness” which was located in the Olympic peninsula in Washington. The cold waters of the north west are where these delicious crustaceans call home. Most dungeness crabs live in Alaska. These crabs also tend to like shallower water. It will usually run right through to June or July. The opening dates for crab season have been shifting in recent years. We take reservations for up to 8 guests on our Yelp Reservations portal here . If there are no reservations available at your desired time, please visit our host at the front door who will add you to our waitlist and text you when your table is ready. Can I make a reservation for 9+ people? Yes. We take reservations for parties of 9+ guests with more than 48 hours’ notice. Are you open on Christmas and other holidays? Yes. We are open 365 days a year including all major holidays and we would love to have you in to celebrate! Please check Yelp, Google or call us for adjusted holiday hours but we do stay open for all holidays. Where are you located? We are located at the entrance of PIER 39 in San Francisco. We are on the 2nd level, left-hand side as you walk onto the PIER. Where do I park for the 1-hour free parking validation? We offer 1 hour of free parking validation (to guests that dine-in at our restaurant) in the PIER 39 Garage directly across Embarcadero Street right next to PIER 39. Please view the map on our website (below hours & location) for details on where the garage is located. Please let your server know you parked in the PIER 39 garage and they will give you a parking validation ticket to insert into the machine when you pay for your parking. We sell gift certificates online here and they are valid at all of our Simmons Family restaurants on PIER 39 and they never expire. There is a public PIER 39 elevator near the entrance of the PIER that takes you up to the 2nd level across the pier from Fog Harbor. There is also an escalator moving staircase that takes you to the 2nd level a short walk from our front door. What is your dress code? Shirts and shoes are required. There is a wide range of attire in our restaurant. Many guests visit us during a day of exploring San Francisco dressed casually in comfortable clothes, as well as guests very dressed up to celebrate special occasions.
