The Foodbank of Southern California depends on donations from the food industry to help feed hungry people in Los Angeles County. Our network of Nonprofit Agency Partners that conduct hunger-relief and feeding programs throughout the county come to The Foodbank to pick up products to provide food and meals to those in need. The Foodbank has a 40,000+ square foot warehouse facility that includes both a 29,248 cubic foot walk-in freezer and a 7,312 cubic foot walk-in cooler. We have ample parking space, and portable loading docks. The Foodbank’s staff, fleet of trucks, forklifts and other equipment can safely collect donations from the food industry and redistribute them to community members in need of highly nutritional food. Your donation will be distributed to feeding programs run by The Foodbank’s Nonprofit Agency Partners in Los Angeles County. Businesses should consult with their tax advisors as well as visit the IRS website for more information on tax deductions for charitable donations. Saving Nutritional Food: Donations help reduce your surplus of hard-to-move inventory and inventory that can be eaten, but not sold. Additionally, The Foodbank monitors agencies to ensure that your donated product does not reenter the marketplace. Environmental Impact: Reduce food waste to landfill, lessening negative impact on the environmental. Safety and Liability: The Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Act, signed into law by President Clinton in 1996, releases all food donors from liability if the product was given in good faith at the time of donation. What to donate? The Foodbank accepts cases to truckloads of dry-stored, perishable or frozen food items and non-food items such as personal hygiene products and home cleaning supplies. Supporting Local Food Production The Foodbank is committed to helping to strengthen the local food supply chain by increasing purchases to local farmers and producers, especially in light of supply chain disruptions, effects of climate change, and environmental impact of transporting food. These food purchases give residents access to locally and regionally sourced food, help provide economic stability for farmers, urban farms, producers, and families, and improve health outcomes through better nutrition and increased food security. Supporting the Evolving Local Food Network Over the last decade, there has been a proliferation of community gardens, urban farms, food rescue programs, farmer’s markets, and artisanal food production in our region, all of which plays a part in the local food system. The Foodbank is committed to supporting these local efforts by prioritizing local procurement and providing infrastructure support, such as refrigeration, storage, transportation, and meeting space. Junk Food Nation When any nation switches from a healthy unrefined diet to one of junk food and fast food, obesity rates increase dramatically and continue to increase as the national diet worsens. Why does this happen? Ultimately, weight management is about the classic equation of calories in, versus calories out. When you start consuming processed foods, calorie intake goes up. This is because processed foods tend to lack fiber and be higher in fat, both of which make them denser in calories. They are also deficient in many nutrients, so the body continually craves the real nutrition it’s not getting. The calorie-out part of the equation also suffers because with low nutrient levels, it’s difficult to have the energy to be active and burn calories. My Plate MyPlate is a reminder to find your healthy eating style and build it throughout your lifetime. Everything you eat and drink matters. The right mix can help you be healthier now and in the future. This means: Focus on variety, amount, and nutrition. Choose foods and beverages with less saturated fat, sodium, and added sugars. Start with small changes to build healthier eating styles. Support healthy eating for everyone. Eating healthy is a journey shaped by many factors, including our stage of life, situations, preferences, access to food, culture, traditions, and the personal decisions we make over time. All your food and beverage choices count. Visit www.choosemyplate.gov for more information. Apples vs. Donuts What makes an apple healthier than a donut? What really is the difference between a food that builds health, and one that doesn’t? It’s an important distinction, since many children today consume over half their diet from highly processed, empty calorie foods; not just at home, but even from junk food at school. Watch this fun video, with your children, to learn the difference between healthy foods and junk foods. Click here to view. The Impact of Junk Food on Children Significantly high percentages of poor children suffer from deficient dietary needs and have intakes below 70 percent of the Recommended Daily Allowances for 14 out of 16 vital nutrients. This type of undernutrition triggers an array of health problem in children, many of which can become chronic. It can lead to weight loss, stunted growth, weakened resistance to infection and in the worst cases, early death. The effects can be particularly devastating in the first few years of life, when the body is growing rapidly and the need for calories and nutrients is greatest. Malnutrition and undernutrition in early life can also limit long-term intellectual development. Several of these problems can lead to irreparable damage to young children, yet increases in wholesome nutritious food, may reserve many of the damages. Malnutrition hinders cognitive abilities through several interacting routes, as demonstrated in the adjacent flow chart. (Understanding Child Development, Scientific American, February 1996.) Without help these children will be unable to perform in school and reach their full potential, lowering their likelihood of being productive adults in the workforce. Hunger robs children of getting an education, often their only chance to get out of these conditions. The facility was originally a creamery built in 1912 to process cow and goat milk and cheese products in order to feed the community’s growing population. In 1975 The Foodbank obtained its warehouse and offices, and has continuously refurbished the site to provide safe, effective, and efficient operations. Major improvements over the last  half of a century  include: cold storage expansion cold storage floor replacement earthquake retrofitting repointing and rejointing of historic red brick structure flood disaster renovations warehouse expansion warehouse lighting warehouse temperature control walk-in freezer system replacement walk-in cooler and floor replacement office heating and air conditioning installation security system for the property fencing of the paved lot for food pick-up, deliveries, and fleet storage Warehouse Expansion Project To meet the needs of an expanding service population of hungry people in Los Angeles County, in 2005 The Foodbank’s Board of Directors authorized the expansion of its warehouse. After 5 years of planning, fundraising, and construction, the 10,000 square foot addition which adjoins the existing facility, became operational. This expansion has maximized The Foodbank’s capacity to secure more food donations and feed more hungry people. This expansion facilitates The Foodbank’s cost-effective operation, by increasing temporary storage space, increasing storage efficiency, and by providing ample space to unload, repackage, and prepare food for distribution without delay to the charitable agencies being served. Previous Next Walk-In Cooler Replacement In the summer of 2019, The Foodbank replaced its 34-year old 7,312.5 cubic foot cooler. Despite regular maintenance and repairs, the cooler could no longer maintain a consistent internal temperature and was therefore replaced. An integral step in this project was replacing the damaged concrete slab on which the cooler sat. The existing 6” concrete slab was sawed, removed, hauled away, then replaced with grade dirt, rebar, dowels, and 6” thick 3000 PSI concrete for the 900 square foot area. This cooler is used for the temporary storage of items such as milk, eggs, cheese, fruits and vegetables that require refrigeration to maintain their nutritional integrity. These essential food items are distributed within a few days of receipt to The Foodbank’s network of hundreds of community-based agencies. The new indoor cooler, with the dimensions of 22’ 6” x 32′ 6” x 10’ high, sits on the new concrete slab. The project used the existing line voltage wiring/ conduits, lighting, sprinkler lines, and drains. The new cooler utilizes energy saving technology, and reduces the cost of refrigeration.
