Cocktalia: Forbidden Island Interview with owner Michael Thanos in Ray Wayland’s “Tiki with Ray” blog. Forbidden Island featured in Peter Hartlaub’s San Francisco Chronicle article “Tiki Bar Hopping for the Mai Tai’s 65th Birthday” Voted “Best Tiki Bar” by the East Bay Express, July 2009 Included in “Best 100 bars” across the nation by Food and Wine Magazine, 2009 Voted One of the Best 5 Cocktail Bars in the Bay Area by the San Francisco Chronicle ! “But what makes Forbidden Island a thing of beauty are the drinks [and] the high-end-cocktail-culture insistence on hand-crafting and fresh ingredients to old, long-lost recipes. The results are fantastic.” – The Wall Street Journal, OCTOBER 4, 2008 “If you imagine a tiki bar in your dreams, you’ve seen Forbidden Island.” – Don Spiro, Bachelor Pad Magazine #8 “Need a vacation? At Forbidden Island, the tropics are just a few blocks away. Although this sip of the South Pacific only opened in April [they] need a doorman to control the crowds that pack the hideaway each weekend.” – Alameda Magazine, Best of Alameda 2006 Edition “Everyone knows the East Bay is the birthplace of the tiki bar (more or less), so it takes a pretty exceptional watering hole to capture the elusive blend of island kitsch, pure spectacle, gaudy cocktails, and festive mood that signals a typhoon of tropical excess in these parts. The new Forbidden Island on a quiet stretch of Lincoln Avenue in Alameda has all those ingredients and more.” -East Bay Express, Best Tiki Bar – 2006 Best Of Edition “Forbidden Island was conceived to be the ultimate tiki bar experience, and it succeeds on all fronts, including the faux-shipwreck decor, the eclectic and deliciously intoxicating drink menu, and the outstanding jukebox, which includes an astounding array of retro sounds, both vintage and contemporary.” -Retro Radar “Despite the ravings from a copy editor and regular — get there before 9 or plan to wait outside — we figured it was just another tiki bar. We were wrong. Now, for the drinks. I’m leery of tiki cocktails. Has something to do with a hot date gone awry. That’s what I liked about Forbidden Island. The cocktails really show the print of its seasoned owners.” -Contra Costa Times, Nov. 30, 2006 “It’s 5:30 p.m. and July’s heat wave seems to be having a residual effect on people living in the Bay Area. They’re looking for a respite — something cool, something refreshing. They’re looking for a drink, dammit. Since [Forbidden Island] opened four months ago, just as Northern California was coming out of an unseasonably wet spring into warmer weather, there have been lines out the door on weekends.” – San Francisco Chronicle, Aug. 10, 2006 “‘I have to give a shout out to the bartenders Melanie and Lara, along with the server Stephanie. Not only were they incredibly personable and pleasant to talk to, but those girls kicked ass. Anyone who doesn’t think bartenders work hard or that a bar can’t do both quality and volume hasn’t seen Forbidden Island in action.” – Erik Ellestad, eGullet Spirits Writer, Dec. 12, 2007 “The drinks are great, [you] have to wait for place to sit but the authentic tiki atmosphere is awesome… go there after you go to [Hangar One] – great vodka made right in Alameda.” – NicholasWines.com “Anybody that knows me knows that the Forbidden Island Tiki Lounge is my favorite hangout. I actually find going there to be worth leaving my personal Tiki lounge at my home. They have better drinks than I do, and their decor is almost as cool as mine.” – Alameda Magazine, Jan/Feb 2007 “The scorpion bowl is often lumped into the category of ‘college drinks’ that are made with ultra-sweet ingredients designed to mask the flavor of the alcohol for drinkers who want a quick buzz. However, at traditional tiki-themed joints like… Alameda’s Forbidden Island, where several shared cocktails appear on the menu, drinks like the scorpion bowl are taken seriously.” – San Francisco Chronicle, Feb. 9, 2007 “The lounge has the requisite vintage touches like carved statues and waterfalls, but avoids the ultra-tack that puts Joe No-Tiki ill at ease… The 52 bottles of rum on the wall keep crowds toasted enough to believe they actually are stranded on a tropical isle.” – San Francisco Magazine, June 2006 “The loving care [the owners] lavished on the nine-month-old lounge is obvious. Forbidden Island is a fruity-drink lover’s fever dream, boasting fresh-squeezed juices and stealth quantities of silver rum…” – San Francisco Bay Guardian “The owners and business partners understand Tiki culture on a very deep level. To experience the glory of Forbidden Island is to understand the true meaning of ‘Tiki bar’ in its classic, purest sense. No doubt, 50 years from now when the next generation of Tiki enthusiasts reminisce about the best Tiki bars, Forbidden Island will be near or at the top of the list.” – Tiki Magazine Find us on Facebook Join Our Mailing List For Special Offers Sign up below for our mailing list to be kept up-to-date with all the latest news and to be eligible for special offers! Peruse our standard list Descriptions and tasting notes by Rum Blogger Josh Miller . Antigua English Harbor 1981 Hailing from the island of Antigua, English Harbour is the premium line of rums made by Antigua Distillery, Limited. Open-fermented, distilled in a unique copper column still, and aged in American oak, this expression was distilled in 1981 and bottled in 2004. The bright citrus entry rides atop a wave of oaken caramel before yielding to baking spices and a long, tannic finish. One of the most sought-after rums in the world. Australia Beenleigh Copper Pot Located in Queensland near Australia’s Gold Coast, Beenleigh distillery makes artisanal rum in an old copper pot still from fresh molasses, and ages it up to five years in oak. This unique rum opens with equal amounts of green fruit and charred oak before the phenolic floor comes in with a suggestion of nori. From there it moves to a complex pepper mixture and hints of orange cream and cardamom. Beenleigh Double Barrel Like the Beenleigh Copper Pot, this rum is aged up to five years, but it’s rested in both Bourbon and Australian brandy casks. The rum opens with a sweet combination of rum-soaked fruits and pipe tobacco before moving to orange zest and white pepper. The long, sweet finish is dominated by grape candy and rich tobacco notes. Barbados Berry’s Another spectacular selection from Berry Brother & Rudd, arguably London’s finest spirits merchants, this one is from a Barbados distillery that most agree is Foursquare. Typical of the Bajan style, it’s a blend of column and pot still rum that exhibits the best of both worlds. Opening with a kick of heat and spice, the initial flavors are cinnamon, red pepper and green apple. Soon enough, it moves to baked apple and pear combined with caramel, vanilla and toffee. The long finish exhibits cocoa notes that make the entire experience reminiscent of apple pie a la mode with ice cream and chocolate sauce. Foursquare Port Cask Finish This limited edition rum from Foursquare is the darling of the rum world. After three years in Bourbon barrels, Richard transferred the rum to Port casks for an additional six years. The resulting blend is nothing short of remarkable. Along with a tannic burst, the rum enters with caramel, chocolate and sugar cookie, before apple, pear and apricot make themselves known. Then comes spice represented by cinnamon, nutmeg, and a hint of red pepper. On subsequent sips, you’ll find a hint of raisins, plums and dates. The dry, tannic finish is long and utterly pleasant. Foursquare Spiced Made by Richard Seale at Foursquare Distillery on Barbados, this well-balanced spiced rum begins with ripe guava, vanilla, and nutmeg before shifting to bright red strawberries, cinnamon and citrus zest. The long finish dries out readily, which will leave you reaching for another sip. Plantation 2001 Take an already-delicious Barbados rum and ship it to Cognac, France for further aging in a variety of brandy and wine casks, and you have this glorious expression. Sweet and creamy upon entry, the flavors soon move to fresh citrus and melon before returning to vanilla, toffee and caramel. Throughout, there is an undercurrent of oak that grounds the various flavor strata. Plantation 20th Anniversary This rum was created to mark the 20th anniversary of Alexandre Gabriel’s leadership at Cognac Ferrand, maker of Plantation rums. It lies in Bourbon casks for ten years in Barbados before another one-and-a-half to two years in cognac casks back in France. The rum opens with a sweet salvo reminiscent of a tropical cocktail: vanilla, coconut, and pineapple combine with toffee and oak to delicious effect. Subsequent sips will show additional treats from the bakery including snickerdoodle cookies and candied fruit. Brazil Avua Cachaca Amburana Distilled by one of Brazil’s only female distillers, Avua is an artisanal cane spirit made from organic sugar cane grown on a third generation farm. Whereas most spirits are aged oak, Brazil uses its own native hardwoods to create casks that impart exotic flavors unfamiliar to palates of all skill levels. Two years in Amburana imparts a variety of sweet and savory notes including vanilla, basil, allspice, cinnamon and toasted almond. Saúde! Velho Barreiro Produced in São Paolo at the IRB Tatuzhinho 3 Fazendas Distillery, this tradicional expression is double-distilled and aged in large oak vats prior to being filtered. It opens with a burst of black pepper, sugar cane honey, and wheat grass before moving to brine, rose water, roasted fennel bulb, and silky buttercream. The medium length finish shows an undercurrent of black pepper and a hint of fennel. Columbia Dictador Perpetual Solera Distilled from pure sugar cane syrup on a copper alembic pot still, this rum rests in ex-Bourbon casks in a Solera system prior to blending. Dictador’s trademark nuttiness bursts forth from the glass, as toasted almonds are amplified by caramel, treacle and cocoa. At once bright and subdued, the finish (which is like drinking this rum in reverse) will have you reaching for another sip. Dictador XO Insolent Solera Similar to the Perpetual, the Insolent expression exhibits Dictador’s rancio notes, but the fruit is more front-and-center, represented by mango, black cherry, and ripe plum. From here, you’ll find candied pecans, coffee, and cocoa, before the long, sweet finish fades away gracefully. Joel Richard Esencia 25yr Distilled by Destileria Columbiana in Cartagena and blended by Dictador’s Hernan Parra, this rum made from sugar cane syrup is a blend of 70% column still and 30% pot still rum aged in Bourbon, Jerez, and Port casks. The spicy entry (cinnamon, cardamom, and black pepper) is attenuated by a prominent caramel note. Sherry and hazelnut soon take over before giving way to dried fruit and citrus peel. Costa Rica Centenario 12yr One of the younger solera-aged expressions from Centenario, the 12-year bears a few brighter notes than its older siblings, notably floral hints with mango and white pepper. True to form, however, sweet cane syrup and molasses soon take over along with baking spices, vanilla, caramel, and oak. Centenario 20yr Sweeter and even more floral than the 12-year, Centenario 20 shows rose petals and cedar along with the cane syrup. There is a hint of Sherry here along with molasses and cardamom. The sweet finish yields hints of pine and rose water. Centenario 25yr Solera-aged in Bourbon barrels, Centenario 25 is a sweet expression typical of the Central American style. Cane syrup and oak are followed by orange zest, butterscotch, toffee and pineapple. The long, sweet finish exhibits hints of spice. Centenario 30yr Centenario 30 washes over the palate with a wave of sweet cane syrup and oak buoyed by hints of black pepper, cardamom and rose petals. The tannic finish bears a nuttiness reminiscent of roasted walnuts. Fiji Samaroli If it’s rum from Fiji, it was distilled at South Pacific Distilleries in Lautoka. Founded in 1980, the distillery uses local molasses and a combination of pot and continuous stills to create their blends. The rum enters with a big dose of smoke and char, which quickly turns to roasted vegetables and very ripe tropical fruit including pineapple and papaya. The smoky imagery then shifts to caramel and vanilla before fading out in a smoke-filled haze. Berry’s The Berry’s Fiji selection is a familiar cousin to the Samaroli selection, but there is considerably less smoke Frequently Asked Questions - Forbidden Island Tiki Lounge Facebook Instagram e-gift cards Home Menu Coconutty Creations Juicy Fruit Bitter, Spice and Everything Nice Rum-less (Other Spirits) Low Octane (non-alcoholic) Premium Rums Premium Rums 2.0 Bar Bites Photos Calendar Kill Devil Club About Forbidden Island Reviews Private Parties F.A.Q. We have a small menu of tasty fried appetizers and snacks, including Guacamole, chicken bites, coconut shrimp, corn-dogs., mozzarella sticks, edamame and hummus as well as our famous waffle and sweet potato fries. Perfect for soaking up all that rum and fruit juice! Where’s the Grey Goose? We take pride in featuring locally made wines, beers, and spirits. That’s why we’re proud to offer Alameda’s own St. George and Hangar One vodka as our premium vodka choices. We also offer Alameda’s own Hazy IPA (Alameda Brewing Co) and 1976 Lager (Faction). In addition, look for other great Bay Area brands, such as Mosswood Distillers (SF), Wright and Brown (Oakland), Reed and Lacey (Oakland) and Cypress Point (Richmond). Do you really squeeze your own juice? You bet we do. We juice our own lemon, lime, orange, and grapefruit juice fresh in-house every day. There’s just no substitute for the flavor of fresh juice. You’ll never find sour mix, Rose’s, juice from a gun, or frozen concentrates at Forbidden Island. We also make our own syrups and grenadine with pure cane sugar- never corn syrup. Our cranberry juice is naturally sweetened pure cranberry juice (not cocktail) from Oakland’s own Voila Juice. And yes, even the maraschino cherries are naturally colored and flavored and contain no sulfites. We take this pretty seriously. How do I book a private party? Forbidden Island is an ideal location for a private party and one you and your guests will never forget! Want to make your party extra special? Why does the patio close so early? It is a condition of our use-permit that the outdoor patio is to close no later than 9pm nightly as we are surrounded by residential property on all sides. Also: Please do not block any of our neighbors driveways when parking! Mahalo! What’s with the dollars on the ceiling? It started as a local tradition soon after we opened, and has been going strong ever since. In WWII, sailors shipping out to the Pacific would leave a dollar at their local bar to get a drink when they got back. Every few years, we pull down the dollars and donate them to charity. Don’t forget to leave a message on them! Please note that they are not tips, and you should leave your tips on the bar for our hard working staff!! The smooth and slightly sweet aroma is full of gloria orange with a caramel and slightly spiced finish. $9 Barbados Barbados lays legitimate claim to being the site of the rum’s invention, with documented mention of rum production dating back to 1651, with the mention of kill-devil. The Mount Gay distillery claims to be the oldest rum distillery in existence, and has documentation of distillation on the grounds dating from 1703. Mount Gay Eclipse $8 Named for the 1910 astronomical phenomenon when Haley’s comet and a solar eclipse happened simultaneously, this blend of single and double distilled rums has a fruity and floral nose with hints of apricot and banana, followed by vanilla and subtle smoke tastes. Mt Gay Black Barrel Rum, $8 Released on the 310th anniversary of the distillery, this small batch from the mind of Master Blender Allen Smith combines previously aged reserves from both pot and column distillates and finishes them with an extended stay in deeply charred Bourbon oak barrels. The end result is a dark coppery-gold liquid with a nose of citrus, complimented by vanilla and charred wood. Mount Gay Extra Old $9 The Extra Old is one of Mt. Gay’s premium bottlings, aged for 17 years in charred Kentucky oak barrels. Ripe banana and sweet almond in the nose from the bourbon casks is followed by the subtle taste of vanilla, coffee and chocolate, and a clean, warm finish. Bermuda Gosling’s Old Rum $12 Crafted from the same incomparable Bermuda blend as their renowned Black Seal Rum, only aged in dark barrels longer, until it acquires an extra luscious, nuanced complexity much like a rare Scotch or Cognac. Produced in limited quantities. Belize One Barrel $9 Created in 1964, One Barrel is a pioneer in Belizean dark rums. Distilled from fermented molasses, it has a medium, balanced subtle taste with a toffee finish. Curacao Kilo Kai Spiced Rum $8 A blend of 1 and 3 year aged rums from the island of Curacao off the coast of Venezuela. Kilo Kai is bottled in the USA. The taste exhibits the traditional orange characteristics of liqueurs from Curacao and then takes the flavor one step further. The many layers of spice added include vanilla, cinnamon, anise, banana, cherry & nutmeg. Dominican Republic Atlantico $8 This new rum from the Dominican Republic is the darling of the rum world. Starting in bourbon barrels to become their Private Cask, it is then aged 15-25 years using the Solera method, before finally being bottled by hand and individually numbered. Classic rum flavors of caramel and molasses at first taste are quickly followed on both nose and tongue by the bourbon barrel notes of vanilla, butterscotch and oak. Brugal Rum $8 Brugal is the name and brand of a variety of rums from the Dominican Republic produced by Brugal & Co, dedicated to mastering the creation of what they proudly say is the best, and driest, rum in the world. Founded by Andres Brugal Montaner, Brugal has been making their crisp and clean rum since 1888 when the Spanish born Montaner immigrated from Spain to Cuba and eventually D.R., setting up his home in Puerto Plata where the company headquarters remain today. Brugal Rum Blanco $8 Brugal Blanco has been made from golden rum that has been double distilled to achieve the cleanest spirit, and then aged for 12 to 16 months in white American bourbon casks to develop a soft flavor. Brugal Rum Anejo, $8 Brown rum distilled from fermented molasses. Blend of rums aged 3 to 5 years in used whisky and bourbon barrels. A full taste tempered by at least three years in a barrel. Enjoy this rum with a little ginger beer and a slice of lime. It also mixes well with almost any tropical fruit. Brugal Rum Viejo, $9 Brown rum distilled from fermented molasses. Blend of rums aged up to 8 years in used whisky and bourbon barrels. The premium rum from the house of Brugal and the most popular premium rum in the Dominican Republic. Lots of dark fruit, roasted cashew, cinnamon with overtones of vanilla on the body give way to the slightly viscous smoky finish. Brugal Rum 1888, $10 The latest offering from Brugal takes a page from the Scotch whisky playbook. 1888 is an extended-age, ultra-premium rum finished in Sherry casks. The rum is a blend of spirits aged between five and 14 years. All the casks for 1888 were laid in a horizontal position to maximize contact with the wood, according to the company. The rum is a complex mixture of sweetness and spice, with big, round bready notes as well. Vizcaya VXOP $10 Named Best in Show Rum at the 2010 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. This rum was once made in Cuba, but the distillery moved to the Dominican Republic in 1960. Ron Matusalem Gran Reserve $8 This Cuban style rum produced in the Dominican Republic employs the solera aging method of up to 15 years. Onset is forward and a bit dry but wrapped with mild sweetness, and is followed with a woody molasses taste with hints of tobacco. Ron Barcelo Imperial $8 Aged 8 years, this Dominican rum has a fresh toffee nose with some candied almond. Dried apple and pear join the brown sugar taste, and it finishes with a touch of tobacco and white pepper. Fiji 7-Tiki Spiced Rum $8 GOLD MEDAL 2009 MINISTRY OF RUM TASTING AND COMPETITION. Guatemala Montecristo 12yr $10 A national treasure of Guatemala, this aged rum has a rich satiny beginning with aromas of ripe banana and star anise, with a sweet toffee and pepper finish. Ron Zacapa Rum Centenario 23yr, $12 Possibly one of the world’s most popular rums. Made from the rich “virgin cane honey,” this solera method rum is a blend of rums aged up to 23 years. The complex nose is sweet with vanilla, chestnut, honey, cherry wood and tarragon, followed by a rich full chocolaty taste, spicy tannins and a very smooth finish. Zaya $10 This 12 year old blend comes from the same company that distills Ron Zacapa and Ron Botran. It is double distilled in copper pot stills and then aged in oak barrels. Notes of vanilla, chocolate and coffee dominate the taste while a smoky oak and moderate spice will capture your senses in the finish. Serving award-winning, world famous classic and exotic cocktails along with many original recipes, along with some tasty snacks, Forbidden Island is a retro-oasis in the desert of your busy modern day! Many compare its dreamy decor to the Enchanted Tiki Room in Disneyland, with its colorful assortment of decorative exotica, from tiki statues to glowing puffer fish to velvet Tahitian paintings. Browse through our Bible of 150+ rums from around the globe, start your Kill Devil List, join our Kill Devil Rum Club and explore the wide world of sugarcane spirits. For too long, rum inhabited the public conscience as a “party liquor”. When we opened our doors in 2006, having an extensive rum program in the US was nearly unheard of since the mid-century boom of Tiki. We actively sought out hard-to-find bottles, and built a premium rum program to educate our guests. Ask your server about our rum program (one of the oldest in the country). We offer upwards of 150 sugar cane spirits spanning the globe, including several from right here in the Bay Area. Brothers Michael and Mano Thanos opened Forbidden Island in April 2006, along with Tiki Mixologist Martin Cate and it quickly became a beacon for local natives as well as travelers from the “mainland” and around the world! Since then, it’s generated a great deal of media attention, but it’s the loyal love of its patrons that continues to make Forbidden Island an astounding success story. Cate left in 2008 and Thanos, with the help of some extremely talented managers and bar staff, took this neighborhood bar and transformed it into a world class Tiki destination. Today, FI is hopping with a wide variety of live musical acts, unique events and has become a haven for cutting edge contemporary and classic Tiki mixology. In addition to the stellar drinks and music, FI offers many popular special events like its annual Luau, Parking Lot Sale and Surf music festival. Forbidden Island is a retro oasis in the cultural wasteland of the 21st century. Swing by after work, after dinner, on your way to a party, enjoy a social celebration or just come chill out and relax with our friendly staff, ensconced in a tropical time capsule, watching vintage movies on the bar TV, listening to the best of mid-century pop music on our jukebox, and luxuriating with our luscious libations. Forbidden Island is also available for your own private Polynesian party on weekend afternoons. Aloha! There are two levels to the Kill Devil Club. The standard collection of 100 rums from around the world and the Kill Devil 2.0 , featuring hard to find, allocated, rare and rums aged 10 years and older. These rums can be enjoyed neat or on the rocks. If you’d like them in a cocktail, you have a few options. Classic Mai Tai (+$3) – Lime juice, orange curacao, and housemade orgeat, along with 2 oz of the premium rum of your choice, incorporated into the quintessential Tiki cocktail, born in Oakland. Traditional Daiquiri (+$2) – The ultimate trinity in tropical cocktails is rum, lime, and sugar. This is a simple way to showcase a rum, while still enjoying a cool, refreshing drink. Ti Punch (+$1) – The Ti Punch (petit punch) is like a stripped-down daiquiri. A squeeze of lime, a barspoon of sugar, and your choice of rum. This is traditionally served without ice or dilution, but we are happy to ice it for you if you’d like. We also offer a curated selection of flights. These consist of 3 specified 1 ounce pours instead of our standard 2 oz pour. They are a great way to start exploring, and if you are working on your personal Kill Devil List, they are a great way to kick-start your journey. If you’d like to explore rum more thoroughly, you can start a “KD List” that we will keep on file here at the bar. There is no entry fee, and no time limit (this is a marathon, not a sprint), but the rewards are great. Once finishing our first list of 100+ rums, you will receive a custom plaque that you will put up on our rum shelf, a limited edition pin which gives you front-of-the-line privileges for all of big events, a 10% discount for life*, as well as bragging rights and the most fun education you could hope for. You will also gain access to our KD 2.0 List, which is a library collection of 50+ rare, allocated, long-aged, or otherwise noteworthy rums. If you decide to complete the 2.0 list you will be awarded a special Kill-Devil mug, strictly limited to those who complete the list.
