Challenge Create a strategy for call tracking that provides a greater understanding of call source origin, their value to the organization, and the ability to optimize for callers of high conversion (appointment booked) potential. Success would be defined by systematically optimizing existing platforms for inbound phone calls, while also creating improved methods of tracking. This would allow subsequent data analysis to inform how and where to invest marketing dollars to maximize their return on investment in the form of booked appointments. Solution Four15 aligned with Ivy Rehab on the importance of splitting calls by source (channel) and ad type, a conversion strategy for identifying the KPI’s that signaled a high-value call, and how we could use that data to optimize for appointments booked and potential sales value. Methodology The original call tracking setup was a quick fix that allowed Ivy Rehab to track calls, but only in an aggregated fashion. There were no insights into where calls were coming from, either the search ads themselves which contained call extensions, or for the IvyRehab.com website. We were also unable to ascertain the digital channel that was resulting in these calls (Google vs Bing), nor the value of these calls. This prevented Ivy Rehab from properly tracking leads and sales from those calls back to various paid efforts. This ultimately lead to under-reporting on the effectiveness of these channels. This setup also meant that all calls were recorded as conversions, even if the call was not qualified. For all paid channels it is Four15’s prerogative to ensure attribution of appointments booked back to each media channel because it is imperative for informed decision making, optimization, and improving ROI. Four15 does not believe in spending our customers media budgets without being able to tell them exactly what they are getting for their spend, or having data that dictates our optimization decisions. Instrumentation For Analysis & Optimization Our immediate priority was to improve Paid Search conversion tracking instrumentation for accurate data collection. Without a baseline of clean, accurate, and informative data, we would be unable to understand areas of improvement for account performance. We had to find a method for determining what calls were qualified and which were not. We had two options: 1 Automate qualification of calls with a call KPI (length of call) 2 Mark calls as a 'conversion' manually in Call Tracking Metrics' (CTM) UI, Ivy Rehab's call tracking partner, or via a post-call survey Ultimately, Ivy Rehab did not have the internal resources to manually listen to every one of the thousands of calls they received and mark them as qualified leads, nor did they have the ability at that time to send a post-call survey due to concerns about training 300+ receptionists across all physical locations. Keeping their needs in mind, Four15 methodically worked in three steps to identify the length of calls that signaled a high value for Ivy Rehab: Phase 01 Analysis & Identification Phase 02 Organization & Classification Phase 03 Optimization & Implementation Analysis & Identification Four15 and Ivy Rehab analyzed several months of historic calls tracked through Call Tracking Metrics. When completed, we identified calls of over 180 seconds represented those that most likely represented qualified leads that were likely to convert. While it wasn’t a perfect identifier, it did mean we could focus ad dollars towards those calls most likely to convert. Organization & Classification Our secondary action was to expand the number of phone numbers available to Ivy Rehab in CTM and allow them to separate calls by source (Website vs Ads) and channel (Google Ads vs Microsoft Bing). Previously aggregated under a single phone number, this new buildout would give us insights into performance differences and allow us to optimize each element independently. Optimization & Implementation Finally, we instituted target CPA optimization towards qualified calls, helping drive more leads across Ivy Rehab’s hundreds of locations. Results Within the first month of instrumenting the 180 second qualification for conversions we identified that approximately 60% of the calls generated had been unqualified. While total call “conversion” volume decreased after this switch, optimization efforts towards these unqualified calls had been wasting a significant amount of time and budget. Now that we knew the calls we tracked as ‘conversions’ were high quality, we could specifically target our efforts to maximize impact Ivy Rehab’s ROI from paid search ads. 60% of the calls generated had been unqualified Prior to the instrumentation of source identification, we had hypothesized that ads were leading to very few calls and that it was the website that was the primary source of calls. After the expansion of call tracking metrics phone numbers and were able to breakout website vs ads calls, we quickly saw that calls from the ads themselves were responsible for 30-40% of all calls coming from the Paid Search channel. With this insight we quickly doubled down on ensuring all ad campaigns had a phone number present with call extensions, and expanded the reach of mobile click-to- call ads. This update also allowed us to break-out calls from Bing vs Google, which allowed us to prove the value of Bing as an advertising channel – where previously we had to rely on call estimates and web conversion data. In all, this instrumentation aided in conclusively proving the value of paid search channels at driving qualified leads to Ivy Rehab’s businesses, and gave the digital teams the ability to prove and improve the value of conversions from paid search. Client Rodan + Fields is a global leader in beauty that seeks to redefine anti-aging skincare and provide superior service and products. Their goal is to grow new customer sales, expand their marketing footprint, and increase profits. Challenge Conclusively prove that SEM (and digital advertising as a whole) could be a viable channel to profitably acquire new customers sales. Success would be defined through the use of KPI tracking, comprehensive analysis and reports, and measurable results all used to inform and improve current and future marketing campaigns. Solution Before takeover, Four15 Digital aligned with the Rodan + Fields digital team on prior paid search testing and results, data attribution and instrumentation, and the goals that would prove to the executive team that paid search could drive new customer acquisition. In this way, new strategies and efforts could be tracked and analyzed, and the results could be measured and replicated. Methodology At Four15 we believe that both success and failure provide opportunities to learn and improve. However, the existing campaign setup would prevent the ability to see or measure any potential success, removing the ability to learn and improve even in failure. For this reason, our first and most immediate goal was to set up the account with all possible advantages to drive new customer sales profitably with the budget available. If that failed, then we would have successfully tested SEM and concluded it was not a viable option for Rodan + Fields. If our structure did succeed in driving new customer sales, then we would have a strong foundation for growing those conversion numbers. The original account setup was disorganized, combining brand and non-brand terms in the same ad groups, and using ad copy that was irrelevant to the search queries being made. In addition, irrelevant and expensive keywords were being run that quickly spent daily budgets and prevented proper testing. Four15 sought to optimize these systems and ensure every marketing dollar provided the greatest possible return on investment. Rebuild For Success Four15 Digital took over active management of paid search accounts at the start of June 2018. Our immediate priorities were to: Reorganize the existing account structure for greater ad to keyword relevance Improve ease of management Give the team greater budget control for product groups Priorities were accomplished in three cohesive phases: Phase 01 Identification & Organization Phase 02 Optimization & Expansion Phase 03 Customization & Implementation Identification & Organization We began by analyzing historic query performance, identifying those terms which had shown success and ensuring they were neatly organized and served relevant ad copy. We also identified negative keywords, terms we did not want to appear or were causing incorrect keyword-to-ad mapping, and built robust negative keyword lists that could be shared across campaigns. Optimization & Expansion Our secondary action was to expand query coverage across brand terms. The original campaign structure failed to protect the company’s brand because it did not include robust keyword sets (or negative keywords) related to product brand names. The result was that competitor ads and organic listings ran rampant on the search engine results page, effectively pushing Rodan + Fields organic listings for brand searches below the fold. We expanded these terms to ensure full product query coverage and push competitors from the top spots on both paid and organic listings. Customization & Implementation Finally, we re-wrote every single piece of ad copy in the account. Rodan + Fields has a wide range of products which have very important differences in usage and results. Therefore ad copy had to speak to the needs of the customers and take them to the correct product. There was no “one-size-fits-all” solution. We created custom copy for every ad group and built out ad extensions (sitelinks, callouts, phone number, promotions, structured snippets) to ensure customers had every option available to them to see the most relevant content that addressed their skincare needs. Results The month of June was spent instrumenting our new campaign structure, expanding keywords, adjusting bids where needed, and monitoring the search query report for new keywords and negative keywords to be added to the account. We also continued to expand campaigns for new product launches and non-brand keywords. Total sales from paid search increased by 40% New customer sales grew by 24% The result of our efforts was that within one month, from June to July, total sales from paid search increased by 40% while CPA only grew by 9%. New customer sales grew by 24% and new customer CPA grew by 23%. Because of these results, Rodan + Fields doubled down on their investment in paid search. We successfully grew total sales from paid search and also had a positive impact on new customer sales. Armed with our new data and learnings, we knew we could further improve paid search performance. We continued our optimization efforts of query analysis and expansion, and the results were even better than expected: within the first three months we were able to increase new customer transactions by 39% while also keeping CPA below goal (50% below the break-even point). Client Flexport is a tech-driven freight forwarder and customs broker, connecting all players in global trade—importers, exporters, carriers, and customs agencies—through one secure, cloud-based platform. Founded in 2013, this Silicon Valley startup grew rapidly, reaching a $3.2B valuation in 2019 after a $1B investment led by SoftBank. Challenge Create an integrated multi-channel strategy across paid search, social, and digital advertising as a whole, with the goal of growing inbound leads, especially from large enterprises, and prove to investors that Flexport could truly disrupt the freight forwarding industry. Solution Four15 aligned with Flexport on their digital campaign needs: robust tracking and profitable lead growth. Four15 rebuilt the existing SEM campaigns, and re- worked every piece of ad copy to set up campaigns that would help identify: Queries and audiences that drove leads Offers and creative that improved ad clicks Methodology When we took over management, Flexport had a robust branding campaign on paid search and had been testing a small remarketing campaign. However, non-brand had not been explored, with less than 20% of the budget going to two small non-brand campaigns. In all, very little testing and exploration beyond brand search had been undertaken. We knew that the Flexport sales cycle was a lengthy one: multi-million dollar deals are not signed the same day a prospect clicks on an ad looking for a freight forwarding partner. While the current brand strategy succeeded at capturing leads that had already heard about the company, we knew that the best strategy for growth was to fill the top of the funnel with prospective leads: individuals that may have never heard of Flexport, but needed their services and had screen time across Google, LinkedIn, and Facebook properties. Our strategy was to use the full Google stack to find these users through Search, YouTube, Display, and Gmail, identify those audience segments that would convert, then target that audience across as many channels as possible. Our plan was to start in concentric circles of relevance, from the most relevant to the least relevant audiences: 1. Build out existing brand terms for greater coverage of recorded queries. 2. Build out non-brand terms of high relevance, e.g. competitors terms, geo-modified terms. 3. Prospect with top-of-funnel non-brand terms of medium relevance and high search volume, e.g. "freight companies". 4. Expand the reach of remarketing to YouTube with discovery ads. 5. Internationally with localized web content and campaigns. Build for Growth & Optimize Campaign Growth We began by scaling existing campaigns, optimizing ad copy for higher click-through rates and broadening keyword sets with prospecting terms. We then layered in non-brand keywords such as competitor names and geo-specific terms based on customer interest to attract a wider, yet still relevant, audience. Remarketing Expansion With the remarketing campaign already performing well, we expanded its reach beyond banners and into YouTube using existing video creatives. This move greatly increased visibility. At the same time, we scaled back underperforming queries and ad variations to reallocate budget more efficiently. Conversion Optimization Over the first few weeks, Four15 analyzed performance and identified top-converting non-brand segments as well as high-volume, low-conversion keywords. To improve ROI, we recommended creating new landing pages aligned with those search terms, enhancing the user journey and increasing conversions—allowing for greater budget allocation even on previously inefficient terms. Global & Social Scale Once we stabilized CPL and saw slower growth in North America, we shifted focus internationally and introduced paid social media channels to continue driving qualified leads at scale. Results Through steady testing and smart expansion into less obvious areas, we scaled Flexport’s non-brand paid search campaigns. This included launching remarketing across three platforms and expanding into two new countries—all while lowering the cost per lead (CPL). In just 10 months, paid search traffic grew by over 3000%, and CPL dropped by 14%. Paid search went from 3% of total site traffic to nearly 40% in a single year. These results show that paid search can be a strong B2B channel, even without relying heavily on brand queries.
