Have you ever heard the old tale that a dog's mouth is cleaner than a human's, and wondered if it was fact or fiction? Our Concord vets discuss dental care for dogs, how to clean your dog's mouth and teeth, and whether your pup's mouth might be cleaner than yours. Is your dog's mouth cleaner than yours? There's an old adage that a dog's mouth is cleaner than a human's. Unfortunately, this is only a myth. Though both species' mouths host similar types of bacteria, dogs have a greater variety of dental bacteria that aren't present in the mouths of their human companions. About 600 species of germs can be found in dog's mouths, while 615 and counting have been found in humans. So, when we look closely at the differences in bacteria in the mouths of both dogs and people, a dog's mouth is much different. In this post, we'll discuss the minor similarities in the types of bacteria like the Porophyromonas family of bacteria, which can cause periodontal disease in both dogs and humans. When billions of germs collect on the surface of the teeth, this can lead to issues like bad breath, gum recession, damage to the bone surrounding the tooth roots, and tooth root abscesses. If your dog is showing signs of early periodontal disease, it can be treated with both at-home oral hygiene and professional veterinary dental care . What are some infections that can be transmitted through your dog's saliva? Though you likely have a low risk of contracting an infection via your dog's saliva, the risk is never zero. Dogs can spread viral and bacterial diseases through their saliva. You can contract these illnesses if your dog bites you, or if their saliva gets into your eyes, nose, or mouth. Bacterial Infections These bacteria have the potential to cause serious infections. One of the bacteria is called Capnocytophaga canimorsus , and it can be transmitted through a bite wound. Pasteurella canis is another common bacteria found in a dog's mouth. People will also often harbor this bacteria if they've been bitten by a dog. The severity of a dog's bite depends on the wound's location and whether a person's immune system is vulnerable or compromised in some way. If you're bitten by a dog, clean the wound thoroughly with soap and water for 15 minutes before seeking medical assistance. If your dog eats food contaminated with E. coli or Salmonella , you can contract these harmful bacteria if your dog's saliva comes into contact with your mouth. A dog that eats raw food may be more likely to carry these types of bacteria. Rabies Rabies is one of the most dangerous infections dogs can transmit through their saliva. It also spreads through a bite from an infected animal. Once the virus is inside the body, it affects the nervous system and leads to various symptoms. Initially, dogs may display signs of nervousness or anxiety. As the disease progresses, dogs become aggressive, feel disoriented, and lose coordination. If you see any pet, person, or animal displaying the signs of rabies, contact the local authorities or animal control right away. Be sure to keep a safe distance. Unfortunately, when a dog, person, or wild animal exhibits signs of rabies, the disease is almost always fatal. Is it safe for my dog to lick me? Saliva can not easily penetrate the skin making a lick fairly harmless. However, if you are allergic to dog saliva, your skin may develop hives, a rash, and/or become extremely itchy. How to Clean a Dog's Mouth Many dog owners ask us, "Should I brush my dog's teeth at home?" Our reply is that every dog owner has an important role to play in preventing their pup from developing dental disease. Learning how to clean your dog's mouth, including their teeth. is an important part of this care. Here are a few simple ways you can help keep your dog's mouth healthy and clean his teeth: Brush your pet's teeth daily with a finger brush from your vet or a child's toothbrush to remove any plaque or debris. It's as straightforward as brushing your own teeth. If your dog is resistant to having its teeth cleaned, try some doggie toothpaste in flavors that your dog will love. This dog-friendly toothpaste can transform a chore into a treat. Use a plaque prevention product (your vet can recommend some), which you can apply to your pet's teeth and gums. These products act as a barrier to prevent plaque buildup. Offer your pup treats such as dental chews or food designed to help prevent plaque buildup and tartar. Dental Care for Dogs Proper dental care for dogs is critical to maintaining a clean and healthy mouth. Our vets recommend scheduling regular dental appointments for your dog. We suggest doing this at least once a year, or more frequently if your dog is experiencing dental problems like periodontitis. Our veterinarians will conduct a thorough oral examination when you bring your dog for a dental checkup. Some of the signs of dental conditions that your vet will look for include: Extra teeth or retained baby teeth Bleeding around the mouth Swelling or pain in or around the mouth Plaque or tartar buildup on teeth Discolored teeth Loose or broken teeth Bad breath If your dog experiences an untreated oral health condition, it can lead to pain, discomfort or even serious complications. If you observe signs of periodontal disease in your pet, such as reduced appetite (indicating tooth pain), unusual chewing, excessive drooling, difficulty holding food in the mouth, unpleasant breath, or other symptoms, it is crucial to contact your veterinarian promptly. They will assist you in scheduling a dental appointment for your pet. Our comprehensive dental care involves thoroughly cleaning and polishing your dog's teeth, addressing the areas above and below the gum line. We also conduct tooth probing and X-rays, followed by a fluoride treatment and the application of a dental sealant to prevent future decay and damage. In cases of advanced periodontal disease, we will work together with you to develop a treatment plan aimed at restoring your pet's mouth to a pain-free and healthy condition. Dental care is an important part of your pet's overall health. Be sure to book your pet's annual dental appointment today, your dog will thank you. Radiography (Digital X-rays) Using a radiograph (digital X-ray), we can examine your pet's internal systems to reveal information that may be invisible from the outside. Digital X-rays are safe, non-invasive, and painless, using only the lowest doses of radiation. Because the level of radiation exposure required to perform radiography is very low, even pregnant females and very young pets can undergo this procedure. Radiographs can be used to evaluate bones and organs, and diagnose conditions including broken bones, chronic arthritis, bladder stones, spinal cord diseases, and some tumors. Ultrasound The use of diagnostic imaging allows our team of veterinary professionals to create extremely detailed images of your pet's internal structures. With ultrasound imaging, we expose part of the body to high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the inside of the body. Because we capture ultrasound images in real-time, we can see the structure and movement of your pet's internal organs, as well as blood flowing through the blood vessels. Having this valuable technology available to our veterinarians in our in-house lab means that your dog or cat's condition can be diagnosed quickly and treatment can start sooner. Bloodwork At our veterinary lab, we are able to run a number of common and specialized blood tests to determine the health of your pet, and to diagnose illness. Some of the most common veterinary blood tests we do are CBC (complete blood count), white blood count, hemoglobin and MCHC, hematocrit, platelets, eosinophils, and blood serum profile. Urinalysis Urinalysis is a key diagnostic test that provides your vet with essential insights into the physical and chemical properties of your pet's urine. Urinalysis is primarily used to assess the health of your animal's kidneys and urinary tract system, but it can also be helpful in detecting issues in other organ systems and is important for diagnosing metabolic diseases such as diabetes. This is a valuable diagnostic test for both healthy and sick animals and should be included in any comprehensive evaluation of your pet's overall health. Fecal Exams A fecal exam is the microscopic examination of your pet's feces, which can be done at our in-house veterinary lab. The ultimate goal of a fecal exam is to identify and treat any GI infections that could be compromising your pet's health and even the health of your family. Fecals allow your vet to determine if your pet has intestinal parasites such as roundworms or hookworms. Parasites can make pets uncomfortable, irritable, and lead to more serious conditions. Some can even be transmitted to humans. Since these parasites live in your pet’s gastrointestinal tract, they are often hidden from view. The only way to detect them is with a fecal exam. Annual fecal examines should be a vital part of every pet's routine wellness exam. New Patients Welcome Four Corners Veterinary Hospital is accepting new patients! Book Online (925) 685-0512 Veterinary Diagnosis & Treatment of Internal Conditions Veterinary general medicine involves treating diseases and disorders of animals' internal systems. Our veterinarians have extensive experience detecting and treating challenging circumstances ranging from brain and nervous system disorders to lung disease and cancer. At Four Corners Veterinary Hospital , we have a variety of diagnostic tools and treatment methods at our disposal. We can manage patients with multiple diseases or disorders, and provide effective treatment alternatives for those who do not respond well to standard procedures. Veterinary General Medicine Conditions If your pet is displaying symptoms of an internal disease, your veterinarian will do a thorough physical exam to identify the problem and provide a detailed treatment plan tailored to their specific requirements. Our veterinarians diagnose and treat ailments in the following areas: Cardiology (heart-related disorders) Like people, dogs and cats can suffer from heart diseases and disorders. With the technology in our in-house vet lab , our vets can examine your pet for signs of heart conditions so that you have results quickly. Fast results mean starting treatment sooner. If your vet is unable to diagnose or treat your dog or cat's heart condition as part of our general medicine checks we will be sure to forward you to a Board Certified Vet near Concord or the surrounding area closest to you, and we will work with your specialist to ensure that your pet receives the very best care. Immunology (immune system disorders) The immune system of your pet is in charge of identifying foreign invaders or aberrant cells and initiating a defensive response to preserve the animal's health. However, the immune system may not always function properly, and your pet may be diagnosed with an immunological-mediated disease. Anemia, arthritis, irritable bowel syndrome, hypothyroidism, allergies, and skin illnesses are all common immune-mediated problems in dogs and cats. Pulmonary Disorders (diseases of the lungs) Your pet's respiratory system does the essential work of delivering oxygen to the body and eliminating waste gases such as carbon dioxide. Because dogs and cats don't sweat the way people do, your pet's respiratory system also plays a key role in regulating body temperature. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), canine distemper virus, pneumonia, and lung tumors are all frequent pulmonary diseases in dogs. Common pulmonary disorders in cats include asthma, bronchitis, parasitic worms, bacterial infections, and viruses. Gastroenterology (digestive organs) Gastrointestinal (GI) disorders are a common general medicine issue seen by our Concord veterinarians. GI conditions affect your pet's stomach and intestines, interfering with the animal's ability to digest food properly and absorb nutrients. Symptoms of GI issues in pets include blood in the stool, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, gas, stomach discomfort, loss of appetite, and weight loss. Oncology (tumors and cancer) Cancer is a disease that may affect even the most physically fit humans and animals. Cancers in dogs and cats, when detected early, may often be treated with a mix of surgeries, treatments, and other approaches. Mast cell tumors, melanoma, lymphoma, and bone cancer are some of the most common cancers in dogs. Among the most common feline cancers include lymphoma, feline leukemia virus (FeLV), breast cancer, and skin cancer. If your pet requires diagnosis or cancer care beyond the scope of our skilled veterinarians, we will refer you to a veterinary oncology specialist near Concord, East Bay, Northern California, or the area closest to you. Urology (urinary functions, genitourinary tract) Urology problems such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) in dogs and feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) in cats are also covered by veterinary general medicine. The urinary system of your pet is made up of the kidneys, the tubes that bring urine to the bladder, the bladder, and the urethra, which transports pee out of your animal's body. Urinary tract diseases can affect any component of the body's urinary system. Endocrinology (glands and their functions) A variety of glands work hard to release essential hormones into your pet's body. The endocrine system of your pet is made up of these glands and hormones. Skin issues and poor coat quality can occur when your pet's endocrine system is not functioning properly. Neurology (brain and nervous system disorders) Neurology deals with disorders of the brain and spinal cord as well as neuromuscular dysfunction. Seizures, IVDD, and tumors are among the most prevalent neurological diseases in dogs and cats. If your animal requires diagnoses or care for neurologic conditions that are beyond the scope of our experienced veterinarians, we will be happy to refer you to an animal general medicine specialist or veterinary neurologist near Concord, East Bay, Northern California, or the area nearest to you. Our vets will work closely with your specialist to ensure that your pet receives the best treatment possible. Veterinary Specialist Referrals Your pet's health is our highest priority. If your pet needs a procedure or expertise that we do not offer, we will refer you to an experienced veterinary general medicine specialist in your area. Laboratory & Diagnostics Our comprehensive approach to dog and cat general medicine is supplemented by advanced testing, imaging, and other diagnostic procedures. Book Online (925) 685-0512 Geriatric Care for Senior Pets Diligent care can help extend your geriatric pet's life and good health as they age, so it's important that they attend regularly scheduled wellness exams , even if they seem healthy. Senior cats & dogs require frequent preventative veterinarian care and early diagnosis during their golden years to help them maintain a decent quality of life as they age. Our geriatric veterinarians are here to help geriatric pets achieve optimal health by identifying and treating emerging health issues early, and providing proactive treatment while we can still effectively and easily manage them. Typical Geriatric Cat & Dog Health Problems Due to improved dietary options and better veterinary care, companion cats and dogs are living far longer today than they have in the past. While this is certainly something to be celebrated, pet owners and geriatric veterinarians now face more age-related conditions than they did in the past as well. Senior pets are typically prone to the following conditions: Joint or bone disorders Geriatric Dogs As your dog ages, there are a variety of joint and bone diseases that can cause pain and suffering. Arthritis, hip dysplasia, osteochondrosis, decreased spinal flexibility, and growth plate abnormalities are some of the most frequent joint and bone illnesses seen in senior dogs by our veterinarians. Addressing these issues early is essential for keeping your dog comfortable as they continue to age. Treatment for joint and bone issues in senior dogs ranges from simply reducing levels of exercise, to the use of analgesics and anti-inflammatory drugs, to surgery to remove diseased tissue, stabilize joints or reduce pain. Geriatric Cats While osteoarthritis is commonly associated with elderly canines, it can also damage the joints of your senior cat. Symptoms of osteoarthritis in cats are more subtle than those in dogs. While cats can experience a decrease in range of motion the most common symptoms of osteoarthritis in geriatric cats include weight loss, loss of appetite, depression, change in general attitude, poor grooming habits, urination or defecation outside the litter pan, and inability to jump on and off objects. Lameness typically seen in dogs is not commonly reported by cat owners. Cancer Cancer is thought to kill roughly half of all pets in the United States. As a result, it is critical for your senior pet to get periodic health checks as they age. Bringing your geriatric pet in for routine checkups even when they seem healthy allows your veterinarian to examine them for early signs of cancer and other diseases which respond better to treatment when caught in their earliest stages. Heart Disease Like people, heart disease can be a problem for geriatric pets. Geriatric dogs commonly suffer from congestive heart failure, which occurs when the heart isn't pumping blood efficiently, causing fluid to back up in the heart, lungs, and chest cavity. While heart disease is seen less in cats than in dogs, Feline Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is relatively common. This condition causes the walls of a cat’s heart to thicken, decreasing the heart’s ability to function efficiently. Blindness and hearing loss Degeneration of the eyes and ears can cause different degrees of deafness and blindness in senior pets, but this is more frequent in geriatric dogs than in cats. When these conditions are age-related they may come on slowly, allowing geriatric pets to adjust their behavior and making it difficult for pet owners to notice. Liver disease In geriatric cats, liver disease is common and may be the result of high blood pressure or hyperthyroidism. Symptoms of liver disease in cats include loss of appetite, jaundice, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, and increased thirst. Seizures, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, jaundice, abdominal fluid accumulation, and weight loss are all possible signs of liver disease in dogs. If your geriatric dog or cat is displaying any of the symptoms of liver disease, veterinary care is essential. Diabetes Although dogs and cats can develop diabetes at any age, most dogs are diagnosed at approximately 7-10 years of age and the majority of cats diagnosed with diabetes are over 6 years of age. Symptoms of diabetes in dogs and cats include excessive thirst, increased appetite accompanied by weight loss, cloudy eyes, and chronic or recurring infections. Obesity is a risk factor for diabetes in both cats and dogs. Kidney disease The function of a pet's kidneys tends to deteriorate as they age. In rare circumstances, medicines used to treat other prevalent diseases in senior pets might induce renal damage. While chronic kidney disease cannot be cured, it can be managed with a combination of diet and medications. Urinary tract disease Our geriatric veterinarians often see senior cats and dogs with urinary tract conditions and incontinence issues. Elderly pets can be prone to accidents as the muscles controlling the bladder weaken, but it's important to note that incontinence could be a sign of a bigger health issue such as a urinary tract infection or dementia. If your geriatric pet experiences incontinence issues it's important to take your geriatric dog or cat to the vet for a thorough examination. Geriatric Veterinary Care for Senior Cats & Dogs Our veterinarians will thoroughly examine your senior pet, ask about their home life in detail and perform any tests that may be required to receive additional insight into his or her general physical health and condition. Based on the results, we will offer a treatment plan that may include medications, exercises, and nutritional modifications to help improve your senior pet's health, well-being, and comfort. Routine Wellness Exams Preventive care is essential to helping your senior pet live a healthy, happy and fulfilled life. It also gives our veterinarians the opportunity to detect diseases early. Early detection of disease will help preserve your pet's physical health and catch emerging health issues before they develop into long-term problems. With regular physical examinations, your pet will have the best chance at quality long-term health. These routine exams are pet checkups that help ensure your animal is in excellent health. Book Online (925) 685-0512 The Importance of Preventive Care Combined with regular vaccinations, parasite prevention , and proper nutrition, these routine examinations include regular physical checkups to give your pet the best chance at excellent lifelong health. With so many different brands and types of pet food available, knowing what to feed your pet can be quite confusing. Also, many pets are either above or below their ideal body weight. A wellness examination will help our vets assess your pet’s body condition and help you select the appropriate diet for their needs. When you bring your dog or cat in for a routine examination, we can either prevent health problems from occurring or catch them early, when they are most curable. What to Expect During Your Pet's Physical Exam Our Four Corners Veterinary Hospital vetereinarians will give your dog or cat a thorough physical checkup in order to get a complete picture of his or her overall health. Routine wellness exams at our animal clinic include the following elements: General Condition Your pet's general demeanor and physical condition can provide clues to their overall health. How they stand and walk, their level of alertness, and whether they are a healthy weight for their size are all important indicators of overall health. Face & Head Your pet's eyes, ears, and nose will be examined for abnormalities or discharge. We will also check the mouth for symptoms of oral health problems such as plaque buildup or periodontal disease. Coat & Skin During your pet's examination, we will look for symptoms of issues such as excessive oiliness or dryness, lumps, pimples, dandruff, or abnormal hair loss or shedding. Internal Health The heart rate and rhythm, pulse, and blood pressure of your pet are all critical to his or her heart health. We'll run some tests to make sure they're all OK. After that, the lungs will be checked for signs of irregular breathing. Lymph nodes will be examined for pain or swelling, and the abdomen will be examined to verify that the intestines, kidneys, bladder, spleen, liver, and stomach are all normal and that your pet is not in pain. Review of Findings At the end of your pet's routine wellness exam, your vet will take the time to discuss any concerns they may have about your pet's overall health and talk to you about your dog or cat's nutritional requirements. Checkups for Puppies & Kittens Puppies and kittens need proper medical attention in their first few weeks of life to get off to a healthy start. We'll offer your new best buddy a thorough health inspection, as well as the necessary vaccinations and deworming medicines. We will also look for intestinal parasites Please never hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have about caring for your new pet, both at your appointments or following your visits. Our veterinarians are here to provide you with all the advice and guidance you need to help you care for your pet. Once your puppy or kitten's checkup is complete, you'll return periodically for his or her required booster shots . Seniors Senior pets are enjoying longer lives than ever before, thanks to recent advancements in veterinary medical knowledge and care, as well as innovative medicines and improved diets. While this is terrific news for pets and their owners, it means that special attention needs to be given to your pet's routine healthcare as they age. As your pet surpasses middle age, regular examinations become increasingly crucial to ensure their continuing health and longevity. We will pay extra attention to your senior pet's potential geriatric problems, such as arthritis or impaired eyesight, in addition to the normal health treatments we do on all adult pets. Additional laboratory tests may be recommended for aging pets to provide more detailed information about your senior pet's overall health and wellbeing. Vaccinations & Prevention During your pet's veterinary checkup, we will also let you know if your animal is due for any routine vaccinations or preventive care measures. Bi-weekly Plans require a 20% down payment of the total amount financed, with the remaining amount financed split equally among the four remaining payments due every two weeks. Loan amounts range from $35 to $1,000 and 0% APR. Late payments or payments of less than the full amount may result in late fees. Unfortunately, this condition is left untreated in many cases due to opportunities for diagnosis being missed. Today, our Concord vets share signs of tooth resorption and explain how it can be treated. What is tooth resorption? Tooth resorption is a condition in which a cat's body begins to break down and absorb the structures of a tooth. A single tooth or multiple teeth' dentin (the hard tissue underneath a tooth's enamel) starts to erode. Left untreated, this process can result in irreparable damage as tooth resorption can affect all of the components of the affected tooth over time. The process of tooth resorption starts with the destruction of the outer enamel and continues toward the center of the tooth. Eventually, most of your cat's rotten tooth will be gone, and only a raised bump will remain on the gums. The premolars in the lower jaw (generally the third premolars are the teeth that are most often affected by tooth resorption. In some cases, the resulting hole in the tooth will closely resemble a cavity. However, the difference between cavities and tooth resorption is that cavities are the result of bacteria, while tooth resorption is caused by a biological process that occurs within the body. Cavities are also fairly rare in cats, so if you see a hole in your cat's tooth that looks like a cavity, there's a risk that this is actually tooth resorption. What are the different types of tooth resorption in cats? Cats can experience two types of tooth resorption. The type your cat has will depend on the way the tooth appears on an X-ray. When a veterinarian takes a radiograph of a normal tooth, the tooth root should appear with a thin dark outline surrounding it, separating the root from the bone. The dark outline represents the periodontal ligament, which is a normal anatomic element connecting the bone to the tooth's root. The two different types of tooth resorption are: Type 1 Tooth Resorption If your cat has type 1 tooth resorption, it means the tooth's crown is damaged, but on the X-ray, the root looks normal and the periodontal ligament can be easily recognized. Type 2 Tooth Resorption Also referred to as replacement resorption, if your cat is diagnosed with type 2 tooth resorption the tooth root will look like it is disintegrating, making it hard to differentiate from the bone on the radiograph. What are the common symptoms of tooth resorption in cats? Cats are stoic creatures, naturally inclined to hide signs of pain. So, although resorption can be very painful for cats, it can be hard for owners to recognize. Which is why it's very important to be able to recognize the signs and behaviors detailed below: Increased Salivation Difficulty Eating Oral Bleeding Behavioral Changes What are the treatment options if your cat has tooth resorption? If you think your cat may have tooth resorption, call your vet right away to book an examination for your kitty. If your veterinarian suspects your feline friend has this condition, they will conduct diagnostic tests like X-rays and a clinical screening while your cat is under anesthesia. Your vet may also perform a complete dental screening. Without these tests, your cat's tooth resorption will go undiagnosed. If your cat's tooth resorption goes untreated, it will continue to become more severe, causing your cat unnecessary pain. Because this condition can be hard for pet parents to recognize, it's important to bring your kitty to the vet for routine dental exams and cleanings to give your vet the chance to detect this condition in its earliest forms. If your vet diagnoses your cat with type 1 tooth resorption, they will likely need to extract your cat's tooth root and crown. If your kitty has type 2 tooth resorption, your vet may need to conduct a crown amputation with intentional root retention. Note: The advice provided in this post is intended for informational purposes and does not constitute medical advice regarding pets. Please visit your vet for an accurate diagnosis of your pet's condition. Do you suspect your cat may have a dental condition or disease? Low-Stress Handling Certification Our staff members have all received Fear Free Low-Stress Handling certification have been taught to recognize the overt and subtle signs of fear and anxiety in dogs and cats. They've also been trained how to avoid typical mistakes people make when approaching and welcoming dogs, which can result in more scared or hostile situations. Our certified professionals have been taught to handle patients in a relaxed, non-threatening manner and how to create a calmer, safer, and more secure environment for pets. Fear-Free & Low-Stress Handling Techniques Four Corners Veterinary Hospital is dedicated to decreasing stress, anxiety and fear in patients while offering the best medical care possible. The small things we do to make your pet's experience at our hospital positive include offering treats, KONGS, mats and hiding spaces, allowing cats to stay in their carriers or dogs in their family's lap, pre-visit medications when needed, and modifications in our handling techniques. Larger Fear-Free and Low-Stress Handling principles have been incorporated into the design of our animal hospital, including separate cat and dog areas. We believe that adhering to both large and little Fear-Free and Low-Stress Handling principles makes our patient care delivery a more pleasant and enjoyable experience for both our patients and their owners. From the moment you walk through our doors, we want you to know that you and your pet are important to us! As part of their commitment to delivering excellent veterinary care, several of our staff members have worked hard to get certified in Fear-Free and/or Low-Stress Handling. We think that your pet will appreciate our Fear-Free and Low-Stress approach. How We Implement Fear Free Many of our experts at our veterinary clinic have been educated in Fear-Free practices and philosophies; consequently, the basic concepts of this approach extend across the hospital and are placed second only to our patients' medical treatment. At Four Corners Veterinary Hospital we blend Fear-Free practices with Low-Stress Handling techniques to help all of our patients have a relaxed, stress-free experience whenever they visit us. We work with our patients and their owners to undertake the following steps before and during each appointment: Good Communication Between Pets & People We start by understanding and identifying how pets communicate signs of stress to us. These signs can include a number of subtle and obvious signals, from a tense expression or dilated pupils to growling, hissing or a tucked tail — just to name a few. We also talk with the owner about the pet's recognized stressors, which might include sounds, odors, pain, illness processes, and new persons. Getting to know our canine and feline clients and understanding what stresses them out, and how they communicate that stress, helps us better manage it during their visits. We ask the family to speak up if there is something that causes fear, anxiety or stress (FAS). We can help! Planning Ahead A stress-free veterinarian appointment begins at home. Please let us know if your pet seems anxious upon going to the vet. We can make recommendations for activities to do at home before to the visit. There may be possibilities to send vitamins or medicine home prior to the appointment to aid with road sickness or to reduce tension at the vet. Let us know if your pet gets stressed coming into the lobby or meeting new people or other animals. We can have you wait in the car or in our outside waiting area then come directly into the exam room. We have several entrances to help. Let us know if your pet does better with male or female vets. Cats and tiny to medium-sized dogs should become acquainted with their carriers. This may be achieved by placing the carrier in an area of the house where the pet enjoys spending time. To assist establish a comfortable environment with familiar odors, drape a towel over the top of the carrier. The carrier should be outfitted with toys, soft, comfortable bedding or a non-slip mat, and should have a top-off option to make it more accessible. You can also spray cat or dog pheromones in the carrier or, for larger dogs, onto a bandana. Use an authorized restraining device in the automobile when carrying a medium to big dog. The journey to the vet can be made less stressful by playing soothing music or listening to quiet and avoiding abrupt stops and starts. Bring your pet's favorite treats or toys to the visit. Fear Free Transport For Dogs And Cats Ensuring your pet has a safe and comfortable ride to the vet is an important aspect of a stress-free appointment. Unrestrained pets can be a distraction and could cause an accident. Small dogs and cats should be secured in a carrier on the floor behind the passenger seat while medium to large dogs should be secured with a safety-tested harness and seatbelt. For cats, you can also spray a towel with Feliway 20 minutes before placing the cat in the carrier You should avoid loud music or noises as much as possible during the drive, and bring items that are familiar to them, such as a favorite toy or blanket. When you arrive at the vet's office be sure to maintain a positive attitude with your pet. You can also offer them treats as a reward for calm behavior. A Calm, Quiet Environment At our veterinary office, we do our best to keep the atmosphere calm, quiet and positive. To help reduce your pet's stress in the waiting area, keep cats and dogs separate as much as possible. Cat carriers should be kept off of the floor and on a sturdy table or chair. Keep your dog leashed and close to your side to minimize interaction with other waiting pets. When you arrive, you and your pet will receive a warm and friendly welcome. We want you to know that you are important to us. As dogs and cats are often sensitive to loud noises and quick movements, during the appointment, our veterinary team will remain calm, speak in quiet voices and approach your pet in a slow, careful manner. Book Online (925) 685-0512 Registered Veterinary Technicians Leslie RVT Supervisor Read Bio Leslie graduated from Carrington College in Pleasant Hill in 2010, and obtained her Registered Veterinary Technician license in 2011. She began her career while she was still in vet tech school, where she worked as an assistant in general practice. Once licensed, she was able to work her way up to Patient Care Coordinator, which entailed overseeing all aspects of patient care within the practice. Looking for a change of pace and to challenge herself, she started working for a busy emergency hospital as Emergency Technician Supervisor. There, she quickly gained valuable experience in emergency and critical care, as well as caring for and treatment of a wide variety of avian and exotic animals. However, she was soon drawn back to general practice by her desire to establish and maintain long-term relationships with the patients and their caregivers that she meets every day. Leslie joined Four Corners Veterinary Hospital as Technician Supervisor in July of 2020. She has since become a valuable member of the team and can be found assisting doctors in exams, assuring the doctor’s orders are completed, obtaining samples, and performing various diagnostics, (i.e. in house lab work, submitting reference laboratory requests, taking radiographs, etc.), or as part of a procedure team, just to name a few. When she is not busy with patient care, she is working on staff training and development. “I really feel blessed to be part of the team at Four Corners Veterinary Hospital! It’s been great to work with such a dedicated, caring group of people. Each and every one, from our awesome CSRs, wonderful technicians and support staff, to our amazing doctors— they all LOVE animals and their jobs, and it shows!” Leslie and her husband, Robert have four dogs and three cats. All of which have come into their lives as rescues. Their dream is to one day start an animal rescue and sanctuary that is not only for dogs and cats, but also for any abandoned and/or unwanted horses, farm animals, and livestock. Their goal would be to give these animals a safe, loving, environment where they can live out the rest of their lives completely carefree. Lisa Read Bio Lisa graduated from the Veterinary Technician Program at Western Career College in Pleasant Hill, CA in 2007 .She then completed both the state board and national board examinations to become a Registered Veterinary Technician. She joined Berkeley Dog and Cat Hospital upon graduation and joined the Four Corners team in 2015. Along with her general technical duties, Lisa plays a key role in follow-up care for some of our chronic care patients, routinely discussing patient progress with pet owners and reporting her findings back to the appropriate veterinarian. Lisa plays a major role in helping our practice closely monitor and fine-tune treatment protocols. Her special interests include dentistry and urgent care. When Lisa isn’t excelling at Four Corners, she enjoys spending her free time with her son Javier, her cat Smash and her dog Lulu. Aside from her exceptional animal care, Lisa enjoys going to the movies, exercising and just spending time outdoors. Rest assured your beloved pets are in great hands with Lisa! Elisa Read Bio Elisa graduated from the Veterinary Technician Program at Western Career College in San Leandro, CA in 2002 and then completed both the state and national board examinations to become a Registered Veterinary Technician in 2003. Elisa worked at Carrington College in Pleasant Hill, CA as a Registered Veterinary Technician instructor for fourteen years, teaching a wide variety of subjects in the classroom as well as supervising students in the laboratory setting. Elisa’s favorite subjects are dentistry, parasitology, math, and anesthesia. Elisa spent a few years working in general practice before specializing in dentistry, and for twelve years has worked with a Board-Certified Veterinary Dentist in Walnut Creek, CA. Book Online (925) 685-0512 What are spaying and neutering? The surgical sterilization of an animal under general anesthesia is referred to as spaying or neutering. Spaying is a surgical operation that is performed on female animals. Spaying, also known as an ovariohysterectomy, is the surgical removal of a female's reproductive organs. Neutering, also known as orchiectomy, removes the testicles from male pets and is considered a less invasive procedure than spaying. In rare circumstances, the phrase "neutering" can also apply to the desexing or "fixing" of any gender. Benefits For Cats There are 6 key benefits of spaying or neutering your cat: It curbs naughty behaviors, like spraying to mark territory. Your cat may become more affectionate. It reduces the risk of your cat contracting certain diseases. Neutered cats are less likely to stray from home. It may decrease the risk of mammary (breast) cancer. It decreases the risk of uterine infection in female cats. Benefits For Dogs There are 5 key benefits of spaying or neutering your dog: It can reduce sexualized behaviors. It reduces the risk of prostate and other cancers. It stabilizes the mood of the dog. It reduces marking and spraying issues. It reduces the mating urge. Spaying & Neutering FAQs Why should I get my cat spayed or neutered? Population Control According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), over 3.2 million cats are admitted to animal shelters in the United States each year. The absolute best way for you to help reduce the number of unwanted cats in Concord area shelters is by spaying or neutering your feline friend. Protect Wildlife It is estimated that cats in the USA kill between 1.4 billion and 3.7 billion birds every year. By helping to keep the number of homeless cats to a minimum, you help to save the lives of countless birds and other wildlife. Cat Neutering Benefits Male cat neutering can help to reduce a variety of unpleasant cat habits, including spraying within and around your home to mark territory, wandering, howling, and fighting with other untreated male cats. Reducing your cat's desire to fight may minimize their risk of damage as well as the transmission of Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and Feline leukemia virus (FeLV). Cat Spaying Benefits Female cat spaying before the first heat cycle can help to reduce your cat's risk of developing pyometra (infection of the womb) and mammary tumors. It's also worth noting that female cats with infectious illnesses can transmit the sickness on to their kittens, who can then spread the disease even further. The pregnancy and the birth process can be risky for young cats, and costly to their owners. Why should I get my dog spayed or neutered? Population Control The ASPCA reveals that about 3.3 million dogs enter shelters every year across the U.S. Spaying or neutering your dog is the best way for you to help reduce the overall number of unplanned puppies each year while improving your pet's behavior and reducing their risk of some serious health conditions. Dog Spaying Benefits Female dog spaying can help avoid major health issues including pyometra (a potentially fatal uterine infection) and breast cancer. Dog Neutering Benefits Male dog neutering helps to prevent your pet from developing testicular cancer and can also help reduce unwanted behaviors such as dog aggression, straying and humping. When should I have my pet spayed? What age? To decide the ideal age to spay or neuter their cat or dog, pet owners should contact with their veterinarian. Some evidence suggests that spaying or neutering dogs after adolescence may provide long-term health advantages. Many veterinary professionals recommend that female animals be spayed before their first heat, which can occur as early as 5 months of age. However, there is increasing evidence that this is too young as the animals have not been allowed to fully develop and grow. What should I know about the recovery process for my pet? Spaying After spay surgery, some clinics will want to keep your cat or dog overnight, while others will let her go home on the same day. The rule of thumb is generally 7-10 days of restricted activity. Neutering If there are no complications or other health issues, your dog or cat can usually go home on the same day of the procedure, with activity restricted for a few days while the incision heals. We may send your pet home with a protective collar for both treatments to prevent it from licking the incision. We typically book a follow-up visit to check on how well your pet has healed and to remove the stitches. Will my pet feel anything during the procedure? No, your pet will be under general anesthesia, and will not feel anything during the procedure. Will my pet gain weight after the procedure? After the spay or neuter surgery, your puppy or kitten will continue to develop to their full adult weight, which will include some weight gain. However, your pet will not gain weight as a result of being spayed or neutered. Is this service part of your Pet Wellness Plans? Spay/neuter services are not included in Wellness Plans because they are one-time procedures. However, if your pet is on a Wellness Plan, you qualify for 10% off the spay/neuter procedure. « Go Back New Patients Welcome Four Corners Veterinary Hospital is accepting new patients! This care includes dental cleanings. In this post, our Concord vets list the signs it's time to have your dog's teeth cleaned. Do dogs need their teeth cleaned? If you've ever wondered whether dogs really need their teeth cleaned, the answer is, "Absolutely!" A dental cleaning for your dog will likely include a thorough dental examination, teeth cleaning, and polishing to remove plaque and tartar, which cause periodontal disease. Once your dog has been anesthetized, your vet will examine your dog's mouth, noting any abnormalities. The vet will then use a dental probe to check for bleeding gums and periodontal pockets where food can collect and decay if your dog's teeth and gums aren't properly cared for. If your dog has developed advanced periodontal disease, saving any severely decayed teeth may not be possible. These teeth may need to be extracted either during the dental exam or at a later time. When should I get my dog's teeth cleaned? Our vets recommend having your dog's teeth cleaned once a year, although your dog's individual circumstances or the condition of their teeth and gums may necessitate more frequent cleanings. Certain dog breeds also tend to require more dental cleanings than others. for example, smaller dog breeds, like Chihuahuas and Yorkies, often need more frequent dental care due to common oral health issues like teeth becoming crowded in these dogs' small jaws. Ask your vet how often your dog's teeth should be cleaned. Your dog will be put under anesthesia to ensure their comfort and safety during the dental cleaning, as well as to protect the safety of the vet and staff. The vet will take X-rays to identify any underlying issues. How to Tell When Your Dog Needs a Dental Cleaning An easy way to tell if your dog needs a teeth cleaning is just by looking at their teeth. A dog's teeth will show a buildup of plaque. If you notice some plaque buildup or gingivitis in your dog's mouth, it's probably time for a dental cleaning. These issues will only get worse if they aren't addressed early on, and they can lead to serious dental issues and sensitivity for your dog. Signs of Dental Problems in Dogs: Bad breath (Halitosis) Discolored or yellowing teeth Receding and/or bleeding gums (Gingivitis) Drooling (more than average) Loose or missing teeth Poor appetite Sneezing and nasal discharge (from an abscess that breaks into the nasal passages) What You Can Do At Home The best thing you can do is brush your dog's teeth at home frequently. The more often, the better, but if you can get in two or three brushings per week, you will be in good shape. The more you brush your dog's teeth, the more they become used to it and it becomes easier to do daily. Where can I get my dog's teeth cleaned? To schedule professional dental cleaning and exam for your dog, you can contact our team at Four Corners Veterinary Hospital. If you'd like to be shown how to brush your dog's teeth, your vet can also demonstrate or provide some tips. Our vets can assess, diagnose and treat dental health problems in cats and dogs. Note: The advice provided in this post is intended for informational purposes and does not constitute medical advice regarding pets. Book Online (925) 685-0512 Comprehensive Dental Care for Cats & Dogs At our veterinary hospital, we provide complete dental care for your pet, from basics such as dental exams, teeth cleanings, and polishing, to dental x-rays and surgeries. Routine pet dental care is an important part of cats' and dogs' oral and general health, yet most pets do not receive the oral hygiene treatment they require to keep their teeth and gums healthy. We also make a point of providing dental health education to pet owners about home dental care for their pets. Dental Surgery at Four Corners Veterinary Hospital We realize how stressful it may be to learn that your pet needs dental surgery. We work hard to make this process as stress-free as possible for both you and your pet. We'll do everything we can to ensure your pet's experience with us is comfortable and easy. We'll break down each step of the process to you in detail before the procedure, including preparation and post-operative care requirements. We offer jaw fracture repair surgeries, tooth extractions, and gum disease treatment for dogs and cats. Pet Teeth Cleaning & Exams Much like your annual checkup at the dentist, your dog or cat should come in for a dental examination at least once a year. Pets who are more prone to dental problems than others may need to see us more often. Four Corners Veterinary Hospital can assess, diagnose and treat dental health problems in cats and dogs. Symptoms If you notice any of the following symptoms in your pet, it's time for a dental checkup. Loose and/or broken teeth Pain or swelling in or around the mouth Extra teeth or retained baby teeth Bleeding from the mouth Abnormal chewing, drooling or dropping food from the mouth Bad breath Reduced appetite or refusal to eat Tartar buildup Discolored teeth Contact Us to Book a Dental Checkup Assessment A thorough pre-anesthetic physical assessment will be completed for your pet before the dental exam. We will take blood and urine analyses to ensure it's safe for your pet to undergo anesthesia. Additional diagnostics , such as chest radiographs or an ECG may also be conducted. Once your pet is under anesthesia, we will conduct a complete oral examination (tooth by tooth) and charting. Treatment Next, the teeth are cleaned and polished (including under the gum line) and x-rays are taken. We then apply a fluoride treatment to each tooth. Finally, a dental sealant is applied to prevent plaque from adhering to the enamel. If extensive periodontal disease is discovered, the veterinarian will devise a treatment plan and consult with you on it. Prevention Ideally, a follow-up examination will be scheduled two weeks after the initial assessment and treatment appointment. During this appointment, we will talk about how to clean your teeth at home. We may also recommend items that can aid your pet's dental health. FAQs about Pet Dental Care Here are some of the most commonly asked questions concerning pet dental care from our patients. Why do pets need their teeth cleaned? Just like in humans, when animals eat, plaque sticks to their teeth and can build up into tartar if not brushed away regularly. This can lead to infections in the mouth, periodontal disease, tooth decay, and even loose or missing teeth. That's why regular dental care is essential to preventing pain or disease in the gums. How can I tell if my pet has oral hygiene issues? If your pet has dental difficulties, you may notice them drooling excessively (which may contain pus or blood) or pawing at their mouth or teeth. They may also yawn excessively, grind their teeth, or fail to groom enough. Other signs of oral health problems include bad breath, swollen gums, and tooth discoloration. Some pets may even suffer from pain that keeps them from eating. Read more about symptoms to the left under Pet Teeth Cleaning & Exams. What long-term problems can poor oral health potentially cause in my pet? Besides causing problems ranging from cavities and bad breath to severe periodontal disease, oral health issues and conditions can lead to disease in the liver, kidney, heart, and other areas throughout your pet's body. Cysts or tumors may develop. Your pet may also not feel well in general (if you've ever had a toothache, you know how it can affect your mood!). In addition, diseases related to oral health conditions can shorten the lifespan of your pet and cause significant pain. This is why regular dental care is so important for the physical health and well-being of animals. What happens during pet teeth cleaning appointments? During your pet’s regular oral exam, the vet will examine his or her mouth and look for oral health conditions or any symptoms needing treatment. Tartar and other debris will be removed from your cat's or dog's teeth by the veterinarian. If cavities, gingivitis, or other problems need to be addressed, the veterinarian will explain them to you and advise you on what steps to take. In some cases, surgery will be needed to treat serious conditions. Your pet will be provided with anesthesia before their dental procedure to ensure they are comfortable and do not experience any pain. However, special care will be needed post-surgery. If you notice any of these symptoms, schedule a dental appointment with us. What should I do at home to keep my pet’s teeth clean between dental appointments? Brushing your pet's teeth and providing dental chew toys should be done on a regular basis at home. These will aid in the removal of plaque. Do not allow them to chew on things that will damage their teeth, such as bones, toys or objects that are too hard. Always contact your vet with any questions or concerns regarding your pet's oral health. Veterinary Dentistry: Anesthesia & Your Pet's Oral Health Cats and dogs do not comprehend what is going on during dental treatments and may respond by resisting or biting. Similar to the anesthesia provided to nervous or anxious patients by dentists, our veterinarians provide anesthesia to all of our patients before performing dental procedures. This puts less stress on the animals and allows us to x-ray their mouth as needed. Contact Us To Learn More « Go Back New Patients Welcome Four Corners Veterinary Hospital is accepting new patients!
