Gateways Serves 1,700 Individuals Annually Gateways serves an average of 1,700 individuals annually in Southern California, including 525 clients receiving inpatient care. Your Donations Make a Difference Through the ongoing support and efforts of the Gateways Hospital and Mental Health Centers Foundation, mental health care access continues to expand for the most vulnerable individuals in urgent need of services. Contributions directly fund essential programs, enabling the delivery of comprehensive care, innovative treatments, and vital community outreach. From supporting new therapy initiatives to maintaining residential facilities, donor contributions create a meaningful and lasting impact. A variety of giving opportunities are available, including naming rights for buildings, programs, and other key initiatives—allowing donors to leave a lasting legacy while strengthening the mental health community. $1,000 gives a young person in crisis a full day of life-changing inpatient care, helping them stabilize and begin their healing journey. $500 equips teens ages 13–17 with outdoor recreation gear that promotes connection, confidence, and mental wellness. $250 supports 90 minutes of one-on-one therapy, helping an adolescent build vital skills for daily life and emotional regulation. $100 ensures one residential client receives nourishing meals for a full week, supporting both their physical and mental health. Jess Beattie Foundation Board Member Jess Beattie, with widespread social work leadership experience in acute care hospital settings, brings an understanding of the vulnerable population Gateways Hospital and Mental Health Center Foundation is trying to serve. Jess has a bachelor’s degree in social work from Whittier College and a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Howard University in Washington DC. Her role as director of Patient and Family Services at USC Verdugo Hills Hospital puts her on the front lines in supporting patients and their families by addressing the psychosocial aspects of illness and hospitalization, navigating the healthcare system, and ensuring continuity of care. Dorene Calderone Foundation Board Member Before retiring, Dorene Calderone was an educator for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Her various roles included elementary school teacher, Curriculum Coordinator, and Vice Principal. Prior to entering education, Ms Calderone was the Director of Development for four different hospital Foundation Departments – Queen of the Valley Hospital, City of Hope (Corporate Office), Glendale Memorial Hospital and Heart Center and San Pedro Peninsula Hospital. Early in her career, she spent the better part of a decade as the public relations manager at The Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM). Dorene’s career spans over 35 years in three different industries – Public Relations, Hospital Development, and Education. Rojean Kashanchi Foundation Board Member Rojean Kashanchi is an accomplished public health strategist. As the founder of Frontline Collective, Rojean advises leadership teams while championing community-centered healthcare innovations. Her previous senior roles at SCAN Health Plan and UCLA Health drove new business growth, operational transformation, and scaled global business development programs. This recognition underscores Gateways’ commitment to meeting rigorous national standards for high-quality doctoral-level psychology training. As a result, the program now attracts applicants from across the United States and Canada, including those from American Psychological Association (APA)-accredited institutions. Download Program Manual Gateways CONREP Doctoral Psychology Internship Program Los Angeles & San Diego Counties The Gateways CONREP internship ascribes to a practitioner-scholar model through the practical application of theory and knowledge. This training site’s primary mode of education is experiential, supplemented with didactic seminars, modeling, clinical supervision, case consultation, and collaboration with an interdisciplinary team. The goal of this internship is to develop critical thinking, conceptualization, problem-solving, judgment, and other scientific skills that are particularly pertinent to the practice of both clinical and forensic psychology. Gateways CONREP understands this is achieved through a variety of activities, including consultation of the professional literature and the use of empirically grounded methodologies and interventions. For every patient, Gateways emphasizes a holistic approach that includes therapeutic activities, school support, and skill development to help adolescents build resilience and progress toward recovery. Gateways Approach Early Intervention & Prevention  Gateways believes that early intervention is key to promoting lasting mental well-being and this program helps children and adolescents develop healthy coping mechanisms, build resilience, and address challenges before they escalate. The GCAOP program includes family therapy and support services to strengthen family bonds and equip families with the tools to support their child’s mental health. Homeless Services Learn More Occupational Therapy & Life Skills Learn More Wellness Center Learn More Integrated Care Learn More Homeless Services Gateways Hospital and Mental Health Center Homeless Services program provides mental health care and supportive services for individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming unhoused. Comprehensive support addresses immediate needs and long-term stability through case management, therapy, and essential life services. Gateways serves individuals experiencing homelessness with mental illness, those with a history of incarceration, and those at risk of becoming unhoused. Many of Gateways’ clients are referred through community partnerships and local agencies, including The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), Los Angeles County Probation Office and shelters. Gateways also provide services for residents of Gateways Apartments, a 24-unit site supporting clients with mental health challenges. Gateways aims to stabilize and support individuals facing homelessness by addressing their mental health needs while promoting long-term recovery and independence. By providing psychiatric care, therapy, and essential life services, Gateways helps individuals regain stability, secure housing, and pursue employment, fostering greater well-being and community reintegration. Gateways’ Homeless Services embodies the organization’s mission to deliver compassionate, comprehensive care by meeting clients where they are and supporting individuals at every stage of recovery—from crisis intervention to long-term stability. Gateways’ Wellness Center is contracted with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. Recognizing the role of physical health in clients’ sustained overall mental health and wellness, programs offer specialized services to support clients’ physical health and develop skills to establish independence and confidence. Gateways’ services are designed to bridge mental and physical health, with the understanding that supporting both will help clients achieve their overall wellness goals. Programs like Occupational Therapy offer tailored, evidence-based activities focused on physical needs like exercise, nutrition education, and personal hygiene to help clients build life skills and foster independence. Our Approach to Care Nursing Team The Gateways nursing team provides care through a trauma-informed, comprehensive approach, meeting each patient where they are in their health and wellness journey. This person-centered perspective enables the creation of individualized treatment goals tailored to each patient’s unique biopsychosocial and spiritual needs. Recognizing the interconnectedness of mental and physical health, the team employs a multifaceted approach to care to help clients make daily progress toward their goals. Dental Days Through a partnership with the Chinatown Service Center, Gateways provides free dental care to inpatient acute mental health care clients. Dental services include visual and oral examinations, head and neck oral cancer screenings, fluoride varnish applications, and oral hygiene instructions. Occupational Therapy & Life Skills Gateways follows a person-centered approach, meeting the needs of each client where they are. By championing life skills, Gateways cultivates meaningful and effective pathways to recovery and sustained well-being. Occupational therapy at Gateways provides multidimensional support for individuals with mental illness, helping clients develop the life skills needed to engage in meaningful daily activities. The program uses innovative, evidence-based approaches to support clients, including mindfulness, sensory education, social skills development, exercise, personal hygiene, and nutrition education. In community settings, occupational therapy is especially beneficial in providing effective, activity-based group work to support clients’ functional abilities and improve their mental health, according to the American Journal of Occupational Therapy . Occupational therapy is a proven method to support mental health, offering a diverse range of tailored therapeutic activities, from structured task projects to coping with music and sensory strategies, which cater to individual client needs. Occupational therapy provides a continuum of care so clients have the life skills to be independent and maintain their wellness beyond their time at Gateways. “When I’m in sensory groups I feel calm. Gateways’ Wellness Center is contracted with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. Homeless Services Learn More Occupational Therapy & Life Skills Learn More Wellness Center Learn More Integrated Care Learn More Homeless Services Gateways Hospital and Mental Health Center Homeless Services program provides mental health care and supportive services for individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming unhoused. Comprehensive support addresses immediate needs and long-term stability through case management, therapy, and essential life services. Gateways serves individuals experiencing homelessness with mental illness, those with a history of incarceration, and those at risk of becoming unhoused. Many of Gateways’ clients are referred through community partnerships and local agencies, including The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), Los Angeles County Probation Office and shelters. Gateways also provide services for residents of Gateways Apartments, a 24-unit site supporting clients with mental health challenges. Gateways aims to stabilize and support individuals facing homelessness by addressing their mental health needs while promoting long-term recovery and independence. By providing psychiatric care, therapy, and essential life services, Gateways helps individuals regain stability, secure housing, and pursue employment, fostering greater well-being and community reintegration. Gateways’ Homeless Services embodies the organization’s mission to deliver compassionate, comprehensive care by meeting clients where they are and supporting individuals at every stage of recovery—from crisis intervention to long-term stability. Gateways’ Wellness Center is contracted with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. LAHSA determined that an estimated 46,206 people are unhoused on any given night in the City of Los Angeles, with 67% of those suffering from mental illness or substance use disorder Los Angeles Times, 2019 Our Approach to Care Core Services Psychiatric Medication Management : Medications are managed to stabilize mental health conditions. Gateways’ services are designed to bridge mental and physical health, with the understanding that supporting both will help clients achieve their overall wellness goals. Programs like Occupational Therapy offer tailored, evidence-based activities focused on physical needs like exercise, nutrition education, and personal hygiene to help clients build life skills and foster independence. Our Approach to Care Nursing Team The Gateways nursing team provides care through a trauma-informed, comprehensive approach, meeting each patient where they are in their health and wellness journey. This person-centered perspective enables the creation of individualized treatment goals tailored to each patient’s unique biopsychosocial and spiritual needs. Recognizing the interconnectedness of mental and physical health, the team employs a multifaceted approach to care to help clients make daily progress toward their goals. Dental Days Through a partnership with the Chinatown Service Center, Gateways provides free dental care to inpatient acute mental health care clients. Dental services include visual and oral examinations, head and neck oral cancer screenings, fluoride varnish applications, and oral hygiene instructions. Occupational Therapy & Life Skills Gateways follows a person-centered approach, meeting the needs of each client where they are. By championing life skills, Gateways cultivates meaningful and effective pathways to recovery and sustained well-being. Occupational therapy at Gateways provides multidimensional support for individuals with mental illness, helping clients develop the life skills needed to engage in meaningful daily activities. The program uses innovative, evidence-based approaches to support clients, including mindfulness, sensory education, social skills development, exercise, personal hygiene, and nutrition education. In community settings, occupational therapy is especially beneficial in providing effective, activity-based group work to support clients’ functional abilities and improve their mental health, according to the American Journal of Occupational Therapy . Occupational therapy is a proven method to support mental health, offering a diverse range of tailored therapeutic activities, from structured task projects to coping with music and sensory strategies, which cater to individual client needs. This training site’s primary mode of education is experiential, supplemented with didactic seminars, modeling, clinical supervision, case consultation, and collaboration with an interdisciplinary team. The goal of this internship is to develop critical thinking, conceptualization, problem-solving, judgment, and other scientific skills that are particularly pertinent to the practice of both clinical and forensic psychology. Homeless Services Learn More Occupational Therapy & Life Skills Learn More Wellness Center Learn More Integrated Care Learn More Homeless Services Gateways Hospital and Mental Health Center Homeless Services program provides mental health care and supportive services for individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming unhoused. Comprehensive support addresses immediate needs and long-term stability through case management, therapy, and essential life services. Gateways serves individuals experiencing homelessness with mental illness, those with a history of incarceration, and those at risk of becoming unhoused. Many of Gateways’ clients are referred through community partnerships and local agencies, including The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), Los Angeles County Probation Office and shelters. Gateways also provide services for residents of Gateways Apartments, a 24-unit site supporting clients with mental health challenges. Gateways aims to stabilize and support individuals facing homelessness by addressing their mental health needs while promoting long-term recovery and independence. By providing psychiatric care, therapy, and essential life services, Gateways helps individuals regain stability, secure housing, and pursue employment, fostering greater well-being and community reintegration. Gateways’ Homeless Services embodies the organization’s mission to deliver compassionate, comprehensive care by meeting clients where they are and supporting individuals at every stage of recovery—from crisis intervention to long-term stability. Gateways’ Wellness Center is contracted with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health. Programs like Occupational Therapy offer tailored, evidence-based activities focused on physical needs like exercise, nutrition education, and personal hygiene to help clients build life skills and foster independence. Our Approach to Care Nursing Team The Gateways nursing team provides care through a trauma-informed, comprehensive approach, meeting each patient where they are in their health and wellness journey. This person-centered perspective enables the creation of individualized treatment goals tailored to each patient’s unique biopsychosocial and spiritual needs. Recognizing the interconnectedness of mental and physical health, the team employs a multifaceted approach to care to help clients make daily progress toward their goals. Dental Days Through a partnership with the Chinatown Service Center, Gateways provides free dental care to inpatient acute mental health care clients. Dental services include visual and oral examinations, head and neck oral cancer screenings, fluoride varnish applications, and oral hygiene instructions. Occupational Therapy & Life Skills Gateways follows a person-centered approach, meeting the needs of each client where they are. By championing life skills, Gateways cultivates meaningful and effective pathways to recovery and sustained well-being. Occupational therapy at Gateways provides multidimensional support for individuals with mental illness, helping clients develop the life skills needed to engage in meaningful daily activities. The program uses innovative, evidence-based approaches to support clients, including mindfulness, sensory education, social skills development, exercise, personal hygiene, and nutrition education. In community settings, occupational therapy is especially beneficial in providing effective, activity-based group work to support clients’ functional abilities and improve their mental health, according to the American Journal of Occupational Therapy . Occupational therapy is a proven method to support mental health, offering a diverse range of tailored therapeutic activities, from structured task projects to coping with music and sensory strategies, which cater to individual client needs. Gateways Approach Early Intervention & Prevention  Gateways believes that early intervention is key to promoting lasting mental well-being and this program helps children and adolescents develop healthy coping mechanisms, build resilience, and address challenges before they escalate. Family-Centered Care Gateways recognizes the importance of family involvement in the therapeutic process. The GCAOP program includes family therapy and support services to strengthen family bonds and equip families with the tools to support their child’s mental health. Comprehensive support addresses immediate needs and long-term stability through case management, therapy, and essential life services. Gateways serves individuals experiencing homelessness with mental illness, those with a history of incarceration, and those at risk of becoming unhoused. Many of Gateways’ clients are referred through community partnerships and local agencies, including The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA), Los Angeles County Probation Office and shelters. Gateways also provide services for residents of Gateways Apartments, a 24-unit site supporting clients with mental health challenges. Gateways aims to stabilize and support individuals facing homelessness by addressing their mental health needs while promoting long-term recovery and independence. By providing psychiatric care, therapy, and essential life services, Gateways helps individuals regain stability, secure housing, and pursue employment, fostering greater well-being and community reintegration. Dental Days Through a partnership with the Chinatown Service Center, Gateways provides free dental care to inpatient acute mental health care clients. Dental services include visual and oral examinations, head and neck oral cancer screenings, fluoride varnish applications, and oral hygiene instructions. Occupational Therapy & Life Skills Gateways follows a person-centered approach, meeting the needs of each client where they are. By championing life skills, Gateways cultivates meaningful and effective pathways to recovery and sustained well-being. Occupational therapy at Gateways provides multidimensional support for individuals with mental illness, helping clients develop the life skills needed to engage in meaningful daily activities. The program uses innovative, evidence-based approaches to support clients, including mindfulness, sensory education, social skills development, exercise, personal hygiene, and nutrition education. In community settings, occupational therapy is especially beneficial in providing effective, activity-based group work to support clients’ functional abilities and improve their mental health, according to the American Journal of Occupational Therapy . Download Program Manual Gateways CONREP Doctoral Psychology Internship Program Los Angeles & San Diego Counties The Gateways CONREP internship ascribes to a practitioner-scholar model through the practical application of theory and knowledge. This training site’s primary mode of education is experiential, supplemented with didactic seminars, modeling, clinical supervision, case consultation, and collaboration with an interdisciplinary team. The goal of this internship is to develop critical thinking, conceptualization, problem-solving, judgment, and other scientific skills that are particularly pertinent to the practice of both clinical and forensic psychology. Gateways CONREP understands this is achieved through a variety of activities, including consultation of the professional literature and the use of empirically grounded methodologies and interventions. Gateways CONREP has two training tracks based on location—Los Angeles County and San Diego County—with two interns placed at each site for the entirety of their training year. Mental health assessments and accurate diagnosis are essential for effective mental healthcare. Yet according to the National Institute of Mental Health , over one in five adults live with a mental illness and many remain undiagnosed, missing out on life-saving treatment. The Annals of General Psychiatry reports that more than a third of patients with severe psychiatric disorders are misdiagnosed. These issues are even more pronounced in underserved communities, where racial and ethnic minorities often receive lower-quality care, resulting in fewer diagnoses and limited treatment opportunities, as noted by the American Psychiatric Association. To address this need, and with the support of a 2023 grant from the Ralph M. Parson Foundation, Gateways established a state-of-the-art Psychology Testing and Assessment Lab. This lab equips psychologists and interns with advanced tools to conduct private, in-depth assessments, identify unique strengths and challenges, and recommend tailored interventions. Through comprehensive psychological testing and assessment services, Gateways helps identify the factors affecting an individual’s well-being, enabling providers to create personalized treatment plans that support long-term recovery and improve quality of life. Gateways is committed to expanding access to these essential services, particularly for underserved populations. The Power of Psychological Testing Gateways use a range of psychological assessments tailored to each client’s needs, including Cognitive (IQ) Testing, Academic (Learning Disability) Testing, Developmental Testing, Personality Testing, and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Screenings. Cognitive (IQ) Testing  Cognitive testing evaluates intellectual abilities and identifies areas of strength and challenge. Gateways IQ assessments offer valuable insights into cognitive functioning, helping shape personalized educational and therapeutic interventions. Academic (Learning Disability) Testing  For individuals facing learning challenges, academic testing identifies specific difficulties and informs targeted educational strategies. Gateways assessments diagnose conditions such as dyslexia and other learning disabilities, ensuring clients receive the support they need to thrive academically. Developmental Testing  Gateways developmental testing diagnoses conditions like autism spectrum disorders and developmental delays, primarily in young children. These evaluations enable early interventions, forming the foundation for Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and long-term developmental support. Personality Testing  Personality testing provides insights into how individuals interact with the world. Gateways assess traits and behavioral patterns, and evaluations guide therapeutic approaches, helping clients manage symptoms and improve daily functioning. Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) Screenings Nearly 64% of Americans have experienced at least one potentially traumatic event, known as an Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE), before turning 18, according to the CDC. ACEs are linked to long-term mental and physical health issues, highlighting the need for trauma-informed care. Gateways is at the forefront of addressing ACEs by emphasizing whole-person care. Understanding a patient’s trauma history is essential for effective mental health treatment. In 2024, Gateways partnered and published a study with UCLA, Applying Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE) Screening in Adolescent Inpatient Mental Health , which revealed key findings: 94% of youth in the study had at least one ACE. 79% experienced additional stressful life events. 1 in 3 children received a new PTSD diagnosis during hospitalization. 56% had four or more ACEs, indicating a high risk of toxic stress. These findings underscore the importance of trauma-informed care. Gateways’ partnership with UCLA demonstrates how collaboration can address California’s growing mental health crisis. “Barriers to accessing mental health treatment and screenings are still too high for young people in California and throughout the nation.
