Garden Grove Unified School District (GGUSD) is committed to preparing its nearly 40,000 students to become successful and responsible citizens who contribute and thrive in a diverse society. To ensure student success, we provide a rigorous and supportive academic experience that motivates all learners to meet high expectations. Students receive an exceptional education at our award-winning schools. GGUSD is a leader in college and career readiness with a greater number of students meeting rigorous college entrance exams than other districts in the state or county. With all our successes, however, we know that academics is just one element of a successful education, and we work to nurture the whole child. The key to our success is treating all students as if they were our own children and providing them all the academic and personal skills for lifelong success.

It is designed to supplement the amount of money your family is able to contribute to the cost of the college. In order to receive financial aid, a financial aid application (FAFSA) must be completed by the specified deadline. The FAFSA is not an easy application to fill out but very rewarding. Filling out the application online not only saves time but penmanship is not required. The FAFSA includes questions about student and parent income, family size, financial assets, and more. The application should be completed from January 1st through March 2nd of the student’s senior year. Each FAFSA goes through a process called “Needs Analysis” to determine how much the student and parent can pay towards college expenses. This amount is called EFC (Expected Family Contribution). This is how the student’s financial need is calculated: Cost of Attendance (includes tuition, books, transportation, and living expenses) Family Contribution (based on the results of the student’s Needs Analysis from the FAFSA) Student’s Financial Need (this amount varies depending on the cost of the school) Financial need will vary because the budget for each college differs. The EFC stays the same at each college. The following are different types of financial aid: Grants - do not need to be repaid. Money comes from the federal government (Pell Grant) or the State of California (Cal Grant) Scholarships - do not need to be repaid. Money comes from foundations, private organizations, funds, donations, etc. Work-Study Programs - need to be repaid by working or other arrangements. Educational Loans - need to be repaid. Usually the money comes from a bank. The college will receive the information on the student’s FAFSA, including the EFC, and will put together a package that will likely include aid from several sources listed above. Every school may offer a different package. Each college the student lists on the FAFSA will send a Financial Aid Award Letter giving the details of the student’s financial aid package. The student can compare award letters to help decide which college to attend. The student must respond to the college to accept or decline each type of financial aid offered. The following are important points to remember: All students should apply for financial aid regardless of family income. Students will not receive financial aid from any college unless the student completes a FAFSA. It is strongly recommended that students complete the FAFSA online. This decreases the chance of mistakes and increases the speed of processing the FAFSA. When applying online, each student and parent must first apply for a PIN. The PIN is used online as your signature. Students should meet with their counselor to be assisted in the process. Dr. Gabriela Mafi is in her year as Superintendent of Garden Grove Unified School District, a high-performing, diverse, urban California district serving 39,000 students. Dr. Mafi has served the district for 22 years as Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education, Director of 7-12 Instruction and Principal. She also spent over a decade as adjunct faculty at the University of Southern California, where she earned her doctorate in 2002, and worked as Executive Director of the Ed.D. Program in 2005-2006. Prior to joining GGUSD, Dr. Mafi held positions as an assistant principal, district coordinator, and curriculum writer, as well as a teacher at various levels. Dr. Mafi is proud of "The Garden Grove Way" , the district’s strategic plan which she spearheaded in 2013-2014 through a collaborative process involving parents, staff, and students. The Strategic Plan includes three primary goals: academic skills, personal skills, and lifelong success. The roadmap has paved the way for real results, including improved scores across all grade levels on the state’s SBAC test; high survey rankings from students about their school's climate and culture, and a higher pass rate on Advanced Placement exams than the state, national and world average. “The Garden Grove Way” also refers to the warm and approachable manner in which district and school staffs interact with all stakeholders. Dr. Mafi takes pride in Garden Grove’s family feel and takes time to meet and talk to staff, parents, and students. The fifth of six children whose mother, Ada, immigrated from Mexico in her 20s, Gabriela grew up in a high-poverty area of South Los Angeles. As a Latina, first-generation college student, Dr. Mafi is passionate about ensuring that all students are equipped with the academic and personal skills needed for lifelong success. She has worked tirelessly to ensure district coherence and improve student learning outcomes, resulting in a doubling of the district's a-g rate, and equipping all students with scholarly habits and challenging and supportive instruction. She launched the district’s Latinos Unidos student club in 2012 to address inequitable outcomes and enhance student self-efficacy. She and her husband, Eugene, are proud parents of three children, two adults and their late son Gabriel, who lived 9+ years with Trisomy 18/Edwards Syndrome, resulting in profound disabilities . Calling on her skills as a parent and educator, Dr. Mafi personally mentors students from GGUSD’s highest-poverty communities, working with her mentees and their families regularly from sixth grade and into their university life. Based on her mentoring program, Dr. Mafi established the district’s award-winning College and Career Mentoring Program, in which hundreds of GGUSD alumni university students return to their elementary schools to provide extended-day lessons to sixth graders on how to be successful in secondary school.
