In 1991 we launched Gingko Press Inc. in Santa Rosa, California at the offices and warehouse of John Martin’s Black Sparrow Press. We moved to new headquarters in Corte Madera, California in 1994, distributing Taschen America to the book trade, and began accepting original manuscripts for publication in 1998. In 2009 we moved to our current facility in Berkeley, California. In 1999 Gingko Press purchased world rights to iconoclast educator, media pioneer and author Marshall McLuhan. McLuhan’s writings on culture and technology have given us a new paradigm for understanding history, through our tools and innovations, distilled in his famous phrase “the medium is the message.” Always on the lookout for shifts in our social order via new media, McLuhan foresaw the ascendancy of software over hardware, the end of privacy, the elevation of pop culture, and claimed that the city’s streets have superseded the universities, museums and galleries as the dominant educational and artistic platform. We’ve also begun publishing ventures with Juxtapoz Magazine, ObeyGiant, Upper Playground, Victionary, and Kill Your Idols. In 2005 Gingko Press, Hamburg translated and published Black Sparrow’s Screams from the Balcony: The Letters of Charles Bukowski. In 2011 we published Marshall McLuhan’s The Gutenberg Galaxy in German ( Die Gutenberg Galaxis ) and in October 2018 we will publish a critical edition of McLuhan’s seminal work, Understanding Media , in German ( Medien Verstehen ). The monograph features a parade of serial killers, demons, aliens and psychopaths, from early Universal monsters in melancholy black and white to modern horrors captured in full bloody color. The freaks of cult classics rub shoulders with the slick killers of modern blockbusters, all captured with Pardee’s signature deranged style and a sense of childlike delight. As such, we are open to reviewing author submissions in a variety of forms. You are welcome to mail in printed materials or to submit an electronic proposal. We have acquired and developed projects in various states of preparedness ranging from a shoebox of photographs to practically print-ready files. Before submitting your proposal, please have a look around our website and try to imagine where your book might fit in. We have yet to publish fiction – we’re not averse to the idea, but we haven’t seen the right project yet. Helpful assets include: Sample designs and art representative of your project Outlines or draft tables of contents For photography projects: thematic and aesthetic consistency is desirable, we’d prefer this type of proposal rather than a general portfolio submission. First are the “BRIGHTMARE” paintings in full color (along with some short stories), followed by a collection of the artists “DEAD-LINE” black and white drawings. Inspired by the idea of taking random mix tapes, hand-made zines, and happy children’s books, dumping them in a blender, pureeing them on high, and then pouring them over the depths of Pardee’s darkest nightmares. The tome is packed with over a hundred illustrations, most of which have not been published in previous books. Also contained between the pages are ten short stories and monologues that have accompanied select characters and paintings over the years. To quote the artist “I always loved adding an element of storytelling to my work, and with this book, I can finally showcase that additional layer to my world of weird-looking brightmares and downtrodden outcasts.” The first half of the book is in full color, then flip it over, and you have an entirely different book, all in black and white. 2 books in one! A paño is a standard fifteen by fifteen-inch cotton handkerchief transformed into a work of art by prisoners that alternatively self-identify as Chicano, Mexican-American, Latino, and/or Hispanic. The artists also self-identify alternately as inmate. Artepaño: Chicano Prisoner Kerchief Art presents a thorough sampling of the distinctive styles found in paño art. The majority of works come from the private collection of Mr. Leplat-Torti, who has one of the largest collections of paño art in the world. Additionally works of art come from the collection of the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque, New Mexico and the Nora Eccles Harrison Museum of Art, Utah State University.
