Helms was born near Malone, NY, on January 19, 1863. As a young man, he tried his hand at law and newspaper publishing, but felt called to the ministry. In 1889, he enrolled in Boston University Theological School. Helms and two fellow students requested that the City Missionary Society support them in opening a full-scale settlement house in the North End. Instead, Helms was offered a struggling inner city mission in Boston’s South End, Morgan Chapel, established a generation earlier by Henry Morgan. The young minister was appalled at the conditions faced by immigrants who found themselves in a new country without jobs and sometimes desperate for food, clothing and shelter. Helms began going door-to-door in Boston’s wealthiest districts asking for donations of clothing and household goods. Goodwill differed from many charities of the day, operating a business model where donated goods were repaired and restored, then sold for profit. The profits were used to pay workers who helped refurbish those goods. Helms hired people in need — many of whom were considered unemployable — to do this work. Employees were paid $4 a day. When money was scarce, workers were given $5 clothing vouchers. Although it wasn’t until 1915 that the term Goodwill Industries was coined, 1902 became known as the year Goodwill was born. With the help of Methodist Church funding, Helms went on to help establish Goodwill Industries organizations across the U.S., and by 1920, there were 15 Goodwills. [Today, Goodwill is officially a secular organization, but we still maintain cordial relations with the Methodist Church and many other churches, synagogues and temples.] In Southern California, the first Goodwill was established by Katherine Higgins, who came to Los Angeles by train with her widowed mother in 1916. She was called the “Angel of the Plaza,” because she began Goodwill in the heart of L.A., on Marchessault Street, which runs into Olvera Street. Higgins gathered large burlap coffee sacks to collect goods and sell them in our first store. Goodwill Southern California employed many low-income immigrants, as in Boston, as well as low-income local residents. Higgins started health care programs for working parents, day care programs, and English as a Second Language classes. From our humble temporary quarters, we moved in the early 1920s to the second floor of the “Baker Block”, a beautiful old building on North Main Street. Unfortunately that building was demolished in 1942. The land on which our L.A. Campus stands today was donated to Goodwill Southern California in the early 1930s by a generous couple who chose to remain anonymous. The facility was constructed from 1935 to 1938. The office/cafeteria section, auditorium and clearance center were added to the original building in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Today, Goodwill Southern California operates over 80 stores, 46 attended donation centers, three campuses, five Career Resource Centers and three WorkSource Centers throughout Los Angeles (north of Rosecrans Ave.), Riverside and San Bernardino counties More Less 1969 17 December Goodwill Southern California Re-Models The office tower and cafeteria, auditorium, and outlet center were added to the original building in the late 1960s and early 1970s. 1968 10 July “The Smiling G” Designed by Joseph Selame, the smiling G becomes the universally recognized Goodwill logo. 1958 27 September “The Paycheck” Norman Rockwell gives Goodwill the much-loved painting, “The Paycheck.” 1950 1 June “Good Willy” A Goodwill public relations director asks Milton Caniff to draw a cartoon. The result is “Good Willy,” who becomes a beloved and well-known symbol of Goodwill efforts. 1945 16 November Goodwill Helps People with Disabilities Goodwill becomes known for helping people with disabilities through job training 1941 30 December “Salvage for Victory” The attack on Pearl Harbor galvanized Americans and Goodwill. Goodwill adopts a new slogan – Salvage for Victory. 1930 28 February Goodwill Southern California Move to 342 N. San Fernando Road The land on which our L.A. Campus stands today was donated to Goodwill Southern California in the early 1930s by a generous couple who chose to remain anonymous. The campus was built on this location from 1935 to 1938. 1929 5 August Goodwill Helps After the Stock Market Crash of 1929 Goodwill is able to help thousands of people who become destitute after Wall Street crashes. 1928 19 January Goodwill expands services into the Inland Empire. 1921 15 July “Not Charity, But a Chance” This popular Goodwill slogan is put to use to publicize Goodwill’s efforts to give people hope and independence through work. 10 July Purchased Donations Top $1 Million for the First Time An exciting time when purchased donations top $1 million for the first time ever! 1920 23 October Goodwill Southern California Moves in the Early 1920s Goodwill Southern California moves to the second floor of the “Baker Block”, a beautiful building on North Main Street. 4 January Goodwill International Expands in 1920s With the Methodist church backing expansion, by 1920 there were 15 Goodwills, including Morgan Memorial. In subsequent decades, the relationship with the church would gradually lessen as Goodwill sought leaders from outside the ministry, and as federal funding requirements made it necessary for Goodwill to become a more secular organization. 1918 5 March Goodwill Southern California Opens its Very First Store That day, 200 shoppers purchased goods totaling $126. In 2001, revenues from retail operations and other sources of income amounted to $145 million. Today, Goodwill Southern California operates 72 retail stores, 44 donation centers, 4 WorkSource centers, and 23 job service sites including 3 multi-service campuses, throughout Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. 1915 2 May The Goodwill Name is Born Representatives from a workshop in Brooklyn, NY, come to Boston to learn Helms’ techniques. They adopt the Morgan Memorial way and Helms adopts their name – Goodwill Industries 1909 4 July Goodwill gets trucks Four-wheeled motorized trucks are first put into service for Goodwill 1902 16 February Goodwill Industries Founded Reverend Edgar J. Helms, a Methodist minister and founding father of Goodwill Industries, with the help of his congregation, collected used household goods and clothing being discarded in wealthier areas of the city, then trained and hired the unemployed or bereft to mend and repair them. The products were then redistributed to those in need and those who helped to repair them. To stay competitive in the workplace, job seekers need to adapt to changing times and technology. Look for ways to translate your current skills to emerging and high growth industries. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the top high growth sectors right now are: Advanced Manufacturing, Automotive, Biotechnology, Construction, Geospatial, Health Care, Hospitality, Information Technology and Retail. Tip #2 Treat the Business of Finding Employment as a Full Time Job. Searching for employment can be overwhelming. However, many people don’t realize the wide range of support that is available. Utilizing every resource at your disposal, updating your skills, networking, remaining focused, taking temporary or part-time work if necessary to get by and putting in the hours – 40+ hours a week – are the keys to landing a new position. Tip #3 Translate Your Military Skills. There are several tools available to help veterans transition into civilian careers. Many veterans are unaware of how the skills they learned in the military can easily be applied to a variety of occupations and civilian industries. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs lists several military skills translators to help update your resume. FAQs How do I avoid employment scams? Sometimes, it seems that there are as many scams as legitimate job openings. In general, if a job says that you can earn a lot of money in a hurry with no experience or skills necessary, the chances are good that it’s not a legitimate job opportunity. As a teen, how can I get a job if I have no work experience? There are many options for teens when it comes to finding their first job. First, it is important to tap into all the resources available to you. Goodwill Southern California’s Youth Programs are a good place to start. Also, tell family, friends and neighbors that you are looking for work – you never know who might be looking for temporary or part-time employees. Consider taking a non-paid internship to gain some work experience. Also, think seasonal. Many retail stores hire teens for temporary jobs over the winter holiday season, and look to amusement parks or beach-side attractions and restaurants for summer employment. Thank you for donating to Goodwill Southern California. You can create a receipt here and receive a 10% off coupon on your next Goodwill SoCal purchase. How do I find a donation center near me? To find your nearest location please visit here . Why should I donate to my local Goodwill rather than another thrift store? Goodwill offers a hand up and an opportunity to individuals with barriers to employment. Your donations help create jobs for thousands of people in need. And you can rest assured that the money we raise from retail sales, environmental business services, and financial gifts is put to good use throughout your local community. Goodwill Southern California dedicates 95% of our budget to these vital employment services. When someone finds a job, they gain more than a paycheck. They gain a sense of pride, dignity and financial stability, and become productive, contributing members of the community. It’s a long-term and far-reaching solution to many of the problems our country faces today. For-profit thrift stores sometimes arrange to use a charity’s name to collect donations in exchange for a flat fee or a percentage of sales. This is not often publicized, and that charity often makes less than 5 cents for every dollar spent. And, you should always verify what organization operates a donation drop off box before you place your items in the box. Unfortunately, it is not unusual for a for-profit business to own drop off boxes that illegally use a charity name on the front of the box. What items do you accept for donation? See our Donation Guidelines for a list of acceptable and unacceptable donation items. We accept items that are in good condition and can be sold “as is.” We make the best use of items that are clean, complete and in sellable condition. We cannot accept items that are in need of repair, incomplete or in poor condition (although e-waste — anything with a battery or a plug — is accepted in any condition). We only accept items that comply with environmental hazard and public safety rulings. When hazardous chemicals or other dangerous materials are donated to Goodwill, they put staff members and the community at risk for exposure and potentially serious danger. Please think before you donate. Do you pick up donations? Goodwill SoCal has partnered with Re Supply, a veteran-founded priority donation pick-up service. Items are picked up, for a fee, and delivered to Goodwill Southern California donation centers. Schedule a pick-up. Link to website page: https://donor.resupplyapp.com/start/charity/665 . Do you accept financial donations? We sure do! Though Goodwill Southern California is approximately 92 percent self-reliant, we depend on community support for the remainder of our operating budget, program expansions, and capital expenses, such as training tools and construction projects. In addition to cash gifts, we welcome investments in the form of bequests or memorials, life insurance, trust agreements, real estate, stocks or other securities. For details, please contact James Cheydleur, Director, Leadership Giving by phone at 323-539-2021 or by e-mail at
[email protected] . Goodwill Southern California is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by federal and state law. How do my donations help the environment? The average American discards about 68 pounds of used clothing per year, which doesn’t include household items, accessories, furniture, e-waste or shoes that are also tossed into landfills on an annual basis. And clothing materials can take up to 50 years to decompose, while plastics and metals can take hundreds of years. With 15 percent of all garbage being made up of reusable items, it’s important for everyone to take stock before tossing the trash. Goodwill Industries International has been a pioneer in “reduce, reuse, and repurpose” since 1916, and has diverted almost 3 billion pounds of usable goods from landfills thanks to your generous donations. What should I do with my cell phone before I donate or recycle it? Prior to donating or recycling your cell phone, there are three things you need to do: Terminate your service. Clear the phone’s memory of contacts and other stored information. Manually delete all information, and follow instructions from your wireless carrier or the product manual on how to conduct a factory hard reset; Use data erasing tools that are available on the web. Remove your SIM card and shred or cut it in half. If you are not sure if your phone uses a SIM card or if you need assistance removing your SIM card, contact your service provider or manufacturer. More Less Good Tips Tip #1 Don’t ditch your cell phone in the ditch. In the state of California it is illegal to dispose of electronics in the trash. The hazardous chemicals and compounds found in cell phones, computers or stereo equipment include mercury, arsenic and lead, which, if not properly contained, can seep into the ground or be released into the air or water supply, posing potentially serious health threats. Fortunately, GSC recycles e-waste for free. Help keep our planet from turning into an e-wasteland by donating anything with batteries or a plug to a Goodwill retail store or attended donation center near you. Tip #2 Clear out the toy closet before birthdays and holidays. Help your kids experience the “feel good” effect of giving by having them donate some of their toys before a birthday, Hanukah or Christmas. Knowing that a whole new batch of goodies will be arriving soon, makes it a little easier for them to let go of things they may have outgrown. Tip #3 Purge before you splurge. We know that sometimes it’s hard to let go. But isn’t it a little easier when you know that what you give away will greatly benefit others? When you donate gently used household items, electronics, books and clothing to Goodwill Southern California, you’ll create a more open, inviting and productive space for yourself and your family, and help members of our community at the same time. Goodwill Southern California is also a great place to find organizational tools such as bins and baskets to keep your home clutter free all year. So try the one in, one out rule. For every item you purchase and bring in to your home, find something that you no longer love or need and donate it. Tip #4 Don’t bite off more than you can chew. When you are looking to de-clutter your home, pick one area or type of item at a time, otherwise the task can be overwhelming and stressful. For example, each month, plan to go through one closet or one dresser, top to bottom. Or, you may decide to go through all of the shoes in the house, or all of the electronics. It is much easier to stay on task when the goal is specific. We know what you have personally sacrificed for our country’s independence and collective success, and we are here with resources and support to help you find your own post-service success. Goodwill Southern California has established a program dedicated solely to assisting veterans throughout Los Angeles (North of Rosecrans), San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. Unemployed veterans benefit from a host of services delivered via Universal Access, Core and Intensive Services. Program Specialists, former vets themselves, are uniquely qualified to respond to and address the special needs of those who have served our country and now face the challenges of transitioning into a civilian world, advance beyond their military careers and regain their independence, a sense of pride, dignity and purpose. Veteran Employment Program advisors offers skills assessments, one-on-one career counseling, employment preparation courses, educational and technical skills classes, and work tools as well as access to a host of other partner services including shelter and housing assistance, transportation assistance, medical and dental health services, mental health and substance abuse counseling, Veterans Benefits Assistance and more – all aimed at helping veterans secure meaningful and sustainable employment. Following is a list of partner organizations and a brief description of our collaborative work: Los Angeles County Child Support Services Department (CSSD) The Veteran Employment Program and CSSD are helping Veterans through a Veterans Compromise of Arrears Program (VCOAP). The goal of the program is to reach veterans who owe a significant amount of child support (arrears) and assist them in resolving their cases by achieving compliance through the modification of existing child support orders, and arranging manageable payment plans. The Veteran Employment Program also works with CSSD to obtain a release for a veteran who may have a hold or a suspension on their Driver’s License. A Veteran Employment Program Representative can work with the CSSD towards resolving child support matters provided that the veteran signs a Release and Authorization. Volunteers of America (VOA) The VOA fights homelessness amongst the veteran population through the Department of Labor funding. Our collaborative work with the VOA is a two way referral process. VOA Case Workers refer veterans they have screened and deemed job ready to the Veteran Employment Program for job placement assistance. Whereas the Veteran Employment Program program refers veterans to the VOA for assistance securing housing so that they can realistically participate in job search activities. Dress for Success Dress for Success receives referrals from the Veteran Employment Program for female veterans in need of professional attire. Female veterans are provided with one professional outfit to attend a job interview. Once the female vet has secured employment, Dress for Success will provide one week of business attire, including accessories such as shoes, a purse, necklace and earrings. Dress for Success also provides an ongoing support group as women successfully transition into the workplace. East Los Angeles Vet Center East Los Angeles Vet Center is a part of the Veteran Administration Health Care System. Veteran clinics are located throughout the community for those who are unable to get to the larger VA medical center or prefer the smaller more individualized treatment that one can receive in a community setting. They offer a wide array of assistance including pharmacy refills, and mental health services. It is not uncommon to find veterans uncomfortable with the idea of walking into the large, crowded environment of a VA Hospital such as West Los Angeles. Working with ELA Vet Center, the Veteran Employment Program refers veterans who appear anxious about care, or have requested referrals for mental health services. In addition, the Veteran Employment Program has partnered with other similar organizations such as The Soldier’s Project which offers civilian mental health services to returning combat veterans, and UCLA FOCUS which provides mental health supportive services to veterans and their families. USC Center for Innovations and Research on Veterans and Military Families (CIR) USC CIR has taken on the role of host for the Los Angeles Collaborative, a group of government agencies, community nonprofit organizations, and businesses whose focus is on veterans. The LA Collaborative is currently in development of an asset map of Greater Los Angeles. Veteran Employment Program participates in the employment committee with a goal of understanding, beyond the area’s current assets, the needs of today’s veterans and their families. Other community collaborations the Veteran Employment Program contributes to include: LA County 211 Veteran Council, Congresswoman Hahn’s Veterans Committee, Assemblywoman Mitchell’s Veterans Committee, LA County Veterans Advisory Commission, Los Angeles County and City Combined WIB Veterans Training Committee. What this means for us: ✔️ We meet (and exceed) rigorous standards for quality systems, service delivery, and sustainability ✔️ We’re committed to environmentally responsible practices and sustainability that support healthier workplaces and communities ✔️ We continue to invest in training, accountability, and operational excellence for the people we serve ✔️ We are among the 1% of all the commercial contract cleaning businesses that have attained this recognized industry certification through the professional organization This certification isn’t just a badge—it’s validation of the incredible work our teams do every day and our promise to deliver services with integrity, care, and impact. Most importantly, it reinforces our mission of Transforming Lives Through the Power of Work by creating high-quality jobs and pathways to long-term careers. Congratulations to our Government and Commercial Services Division, Workforce Development and Business Operations teams who made this possible. Seanise Webb had recently been evicted from her home. Having spent the past 3 years caring for her kids, she suddenly found herself homeless, jobless and without any idea how to re-enter the workforce. Times were hard and Seanise was forced to separate from her children in hopes of providing them a stable home life. She checked into a local women’s shelter and began looking for organizations that might be able to help get her back on her feet. Seanise was referred to the Goodwill Career Resource Center by 211. Working in her favor was the fact that Seanise was highly educated and had valuable work experience under her belt. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina and had spent many years working as a Nursing Assistant in local hospitals. Seanise shared that she did not have any means of transportation to get to job interviews. Thankfully, Goodwill So Cal was able to help Seanise by providing her with access to case-managed services and resources she needed to succeed in her job search and placement, including supportive services, such as transportation. Just two months later, Seanise walked into the Career Resource Center the same as she would any other day, only today, Seanise was walking in to let the staff know she had recently been offered a full-time position with the County of San Bernardino, providing In-Home Supportive Services. A few weeks after receiving her first few paychecks, Seanise was able to transition out of the homeless shelter and into her own apartment. She returned to the Career Resource Center to thank everyone for supporting her through her darkest months. Goodwill SoCal was able to open a door she had previously thought was permanently closed. In the coming months, we hope to follow up with Seanise and share in her continued success. Thank you San Manuel Band of Mission Indians for your support of Goodwill Southern California and being a part of Seanise’s journey! San Manuel Band of Mission Indians’ partnership with Goodwill Southern California has helped us serve thousands of job seekers at a time when the economy remains uncertain for the most vulnerable in our community. San Manuel’s support started in 2009 at the height of the Great Recession, and has funded services that offer job seekers a second chance – training in a new career, workshops, referrals, transportation assistance, and a good job. By doing so, San Manuel has invested not only in individuals who are now working and able to care for their families with dignity, but more importantly, in the whole community. This year, we focused San Manuel’s funding of half a million dollars (thank you – wholeheartedly!) to expand services to veterans from Riverside to San Bernardino, including the High Desert. Our Veteran Employment Program came out of this collaboration and in its first year, it has shown promise and success in getting veterans who have been unemployed for extended periods of time back to work. Here is one such veteran whose life has changed thanks to this partnership. It illustrates the impact the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians have made in the lives of vulnerable job seekers in our community. Marine Corps veteran Augustine Hays went on almost 100 job interviews after graduating college, but because of her lack of work experience, employers wouldn’t give her a chance. Her husband worked overtime at his job while Augustine was unemployed, but they still couldn’t enjoy the simple things, like going to the movies or the zoo with their kids, ages 2 and 4. 2 days after Christmas, the Hays family truck was vandalized right in front of their apartment, and thieves stole their stereo and car seat. The Hays family no longer felt safe at home, so Augustine and her husband decided to deplete their savings and move to a safer neighborhood. With their savings drained, Augustine knew time was running out. In April of 2016, Augustine was referred to the San Bernardino Goodwill Career Resource Center, where she met Veteran Service Specialist Ruben Cruz. Ruben assisted Augustine with everything from building her resume to obtaining professional work attire and practicing mock interviews. Shortly after entering the Veteran Employment Program, Augustine was hired as a Job Coach at Goodwill. 2 months later, Augustine took a position as a Business Service Representative, helping veterans fight their way out of the same struggle she overcame- right here at Goodwill Southern California. Among those veterans was former Marine, David Slaney, who worked as a Warehouse Associate until June 2016 when he lost his job unexpectedly. As a result, his heavy equipment license also expired, preventing him from finding another job in his same field. Broke and living in a studio apartment, David knew he needed help. While at the Veterans Affairs Office in Riverside, David picked up a flyer for Goodwill’s Veterans Employment Program and decided to enroll. Donor Promise Policy Goodwill Southern California Donor Promise Policy Goodwill Southern California (GSC) and the staff members of the Development and Community Relations departments subscribe and adhere to the Donor Bill of Rights, Association of Fundraising Professionals’ (AFP) Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of Professional Practice and disclosure about our Storage of Donor Information. Any release of information about a GSC client, employee, or donor (corporate, private foundation or individual) must be approved by the Vice President of Development. The release of information may include but is not limited to electronic and printed form within or outside GSC. Any contact with GSC donors is to be approved by the Vice President of Development prior to making the contact, be it for soliciting a financial contribution, event support or any other purpose. This includes requests of cash or in-kind donations of goods or services. All donations must be processed through the Development Department so that proper coordination of solicitations occurs and so that solicitation, tracking and follow-up procedures may be initiated. Storage of Donor Information Donor information is stored and managed in the GSC Development Department’s database. We permit only authorized employees, who are trained in the proper handling of donor information, to have access to this information. Employees who violate our Donor Promise will be subject to our normal disciplinary process. This policy is being coordinated in compliance with GSC’s HIPAA policy that is enforced by GSC’s HIPAA Privacy Specialist/Environmental and Safety Manager. The Donor Bill of Rights The Donor Bill of Rights was created by the American Association of Fund Raising Counsel (AAFRC—now known as the Giving Institute), the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP), the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). It has been endorsed by numerous organizations. Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary to the quality of life. To ensure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the nonprofit organizations and causes they are asked to support, Goodwill Southern California declares that all donors have these rights: I. To be informed of the organization’s mission, of the way the organization intends to use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes. II. To be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization’s governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities. III. To have access to the organization’s most recent financial statements. IV. To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given. V. To receive appropriate acknowledgement and recognition. VI. To be assured that information about their donation is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law. VII. To expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be professional in nature. VIII. To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the organization or hired solicitors. IX. To have the opportunity for their names
