Unless otherwise announced, the school uniform is to be worn on all school days. Grooming regulations include (but are not limited to) the following: Grooming All uniforms should be neat, clean and ironed. No torn or ragged uniforms or shoes will be allowed. Absolutely no make-up, fingernail polish, acrylic nails, jewelry, accessories (including wallet chains and excessive hair clips) or dangling earrings are permitted. Girls may only wear stud-type earrings on the ear lobe. Boys may not wear earrings. No extreme or fad haircuts are allowed on boys or girls. Hair must be of the natural color. Boys’ hair must be off the face and may not cover the ears or touch the collar of the shirts. The administration reserves the right to determine what constitutes an extreme haircut. No hats, visible body piercing or tattoos (permanent or semi-permanent) are allowed. If an additional shirt is necessary under your uniform shirt, ONLY white tops are allowed. Only in an emergency or on non-uniform days are students to come to school in non-uniform dress. (In case of emergency, a note will be required from the parents.) Spirit Dress T-shirt with logo in the class spirit color with denim or black jeans, all-black, non-canvas sneakers for boys and all-white, non-canvas sneakers for girls. If needed, uniform outerwear is to be worn with Spirit Dress. Out of Uniform Days Days on which the students may wear dress other than the school uniform are considered a privilege. Students are expected to adhere to good grooming and neatness on these days. No oversized or baggy clothes, torn clothing, tank tops, spaghetti straps, tube tops, bare midriff tops, shorts other than walking length shorts, hats or T-shirts with inappropriate slogans may be worn. Shoes must be appropriate for Fitness class and recess. A student will lose the privilege of non-uniform dress if he or she disregards the above regulations. When there is a question, the appropriateness of the attire will be decided by the administration and parents will be called to bring appropriate clothing. At no time may a student wear open-toe shoes, shoes without straps, shoes with buckles or boots as part of the uniform. Shoes with wheels are not allowed.  Our uniform supplier is LandsEnd . O'Ryan Scholarship Fund Annual Appeal In-Kind Gifts Alumni GSBH Store Athletics Participation in athletics at  GSBH  is an immensely rewarding experience for student-athletes. Through competition, girls and boys learn a multitude of valuable lessons about teamwork, responsibility, leadership, relationships and goal-setting as they grow emotionally, physically and intellectually stronger. Good Shepherd’s athletics program strives to be a shining example of what makes the school a standout among its peers and a rock in the community.  Our intent is to demonstrate that Good Shepherd athletic teams – as well as physical education classes – are a fun, rich and rewarding activity for all students. Sports teams and P.E. classes exist in an atmosphere of positivity and camaraderie with underpinnings of the Catholic faith. The program always seeks to grow and flourish on a steadily upward trajectory. To that end, a wide offering of sports including  Cross Country, Track & Field, Flag Football, Basketball, Soccer, Bowling  and  Golf  helps increase the number of participants in competitive events and provide more opportunities for athletic achievement. Parental involvement in the athletics program is a vital element at GSBH. Parents are known to lend helping hands by serving as team coaches/assistant coaches and providing the needed support in stirring up interest in athletics as a whole. The cliche “winning breeds success” can be applicable to the program when students embrace giving their best efforts in practice, on the field and – not to be forgotten – in the classroom. Figuratively speaking, reading playbooks and reading textbooks should go hand-in-hand.  Finally, Good Shepherd athletics actively incorporates elements of academic enrichment as part of the program’s core value system. The program seeks to Improve study and test-taking skills, for example, by monitoring the academic progress of student-athletes and providing a support system for those who might need it. Religion Technology We provide a challenging learning environment focused on STREAM which enables teachers to focus in an interdisciplinary way on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), while integrating the Arts, and allowing Religion to flow throughout the daily routine (STREAM). This focus highlights the unique approach to curriculum design and presentation specific to Good Shepherd.  Our rich tradition of strong academics, a robust art program (visual & performing), and a deep devotion to the spiritual need and growth of our students . STREAM is an opportunity for today’s learners to learn via multiple lenses, including the lens of faith.  This approach develops broad, creative, critical thinking skills that can be applied across disciplines and as disciples both in and outside school throughout learner’s lives—both now and in 21st century careers. Good Shepherd has a rich tradition of Theater and Performing Arts. Each year our students in grades 5 – 8 perform a musical for our Good Shepherd families and guests. Auditions are held in the Fall and the production opens in the Spring. Students memorize lines, learn choreography, and develop lifelong skills that will take them from the stage to beyond. The GSBH Choir is open to students in grades 2nd through 8th Grade. Participation in the school choir affords students many wonderful opportunities including participating in leadership roles in our school liturgies, as well as performing special pieces in our all-school Christmas and Spring Concerts. Our choir has also sung in many amazing venues and events, including the Southern California Pueri Cantores festival, the Staples Center (Crypto.com), and on-stage at Disney's California Adventure!  Our other programs include Barnsdall Arts . Good Shepherd Catholic School teaches Spanish as a second language for all students in PK3-8th grades as a part of the regular, weekly curriculum. Along with our formal foreign language classes, Good Shepherd is proud of its multi-cultural community that boasts a number of students fluent in French, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin and more. Good Shepherd utilizes the Saxon Math  curriculum.  Saxon scaffolds the curriculum so that each lesson and concept is reinforced.  This program is Incremental, Distributed , and Cumulative . The Incremental design supports small, consistent, and incremental teaching and leaning.  This reinforces skills before adding new concepts.  The Distributing approach allows students time to master the curriculum  The Cumulative curriculum includes regular practice, assessments, and application throughout all lessons.  Connections between concepts are reinforced throughout the curriculum.  Along with a variety of extra-curricular activities which incorporate music (choir, including musical theater and children’s choir, Good Shepherd also has music as a part of its regular, weekly curriculum.  Students work on music theory, are educated on various aspects of music history and learn performance skills which are showcased at our Christmas and Spring concerts.  Used as teaching tools are chimes, percussion instruments and recorders. Students in grades PK-8th have formal P.E. every week led by our Physical Education/Wellness teacher.  During P.E., students play sports, are led through exercises with proper warm-up/cool-down and are educated on nutrition to help their bodies function at optimal levels throughout the week. Religion is a part of our daily curriculum and culture here at Good Shepherd.  Every morning at assembly, children recite the morning offering and before lunchtime, grace before meals.  Students participate in a half hour of religion class each day and, in grade 2, prepare with their class for First Holy Communion and Reconciliation. Our parish is located on Santa Monica Blvd., in between Roxbury and Bedford.  Students K-8th grades attend school masses every other Wednesday.  With a curriculum and emphasis on time-tested values, deeply rooted in a history of excellence, our classrooms are outfitted with technologies including SMART Boards and document cameras. In addition, PreK to Grade 2 classrooms have iPad learning centers, allowing teachers the opportunity to bring digital resources directly to their students. Colm O’Ryan Scholarship Fund was established as a small, grassroots effort by parish families contributing what they could to help other families keep their children enrolled in our school.    Fr. Colm’s legacy of service and his unwavering support for Catholic education continue to guide our mission, and every contribution to this fund extends his legacy to future students in need.   Father Colm O’Ryan became pastor in September 1991, and upon his retirement in July 2009 was named pastor emeritus. Every morning at assembly, children recite the morning offering and before lunchtime, grace before meals. Students participate in a half hour of religion class each day and, in grade 2, prepare with their class for First Holy Communion and Reconciliation. Our parish is located on Santa Monica Blvd., in between Roxbury and Bedford. Students K-8th grades attend school masses every other Wednesday. An evaluation will be set up at the time you return your completed application for ALL incoming students. This is a developmental assessment to determine the appropriate grade placement for students in our program.  Alternate assessments for our applicants to our Pre-K and TK programs may be arranged by “special” permission.  When is the admissions period? Our admissions “season” runs from September through April, with priority given to applicants who apply by March 31st. Applications are obtained by making an appointment to visit the school for a tour, where you will be given a packet and instructions on the process.  Late applicants, those applying to Good Shepherd after April 30th, will be considered pending available spots. When are applications available? Applications are available in the Fall, one year in advance of the school year you are applying to.  Any forms filled out prior to that date will be considered an interest page only and used to reach out for the appropriate school year in which you intend to start. It is advised that you collect all items on the application checklist prior to submitting your completed packet, this will ensure that you will not experience any delays in processing. Applications are completed and submitted online.  A non-refundable ($100) application fee must be submitted with you documents. How old does my child need to be in order to apply for the PreK-3 class? Children must be 3 years of age by September 1st of the school year they are beginning. They must be fully potty trained.  Is there an application fee? Yes, there is a non-refundable application fee of $100.00 per child.  This fee is due when you return your completed application.  Fee includes evaluation and testing.  A completed application and paid fee does not guarantee acceptance into Good Catholic School. Since Good Shepherd is a Catholic school, do you accept persons of other faiths? Yes, Good Shepherd admits students who qualify for admission without discrimination of gender, race, cultural or religious background.  However, as a Catholic school, it is a requirement that all students participate in the religion classes and activities, which are a part of the curriculum. Do you accept students or transfer students after the school year begins? If a space is available and you have gone through the complete application process, consideration may be made for late enrollment or transfer students.  How much is the tuition? Tuition for 2026-2027: PreKindergarten (3 yr olds): $15,750   Transitional Kindergarten  (4 yr olds): $15,750 Kindergarten to 8th Grade: $13,545 Enrollment fee is $1000 and is non-refundable. School hours for Pre-K3 – 8th are Monday through Thursday 7:50 a.m.-3:00 p.m.  On Fridays, school hours are 7:50 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Is there a sports program at Good Shepherd? What is the average class size? Our Pre-K3 has 18 students, while Transitional Kindergarter, Kindergarten and Grades 1-8 will have an average of 16-20 students per class. Pre-K, TK and Kindergarten classrooms have 2 full-time teachers/aids. Do you offer after school care? Our Afterschool Care Program provides after school care for our students in grades PreK-8th grade. Our staff provides a safe, nurturing, and interactive program designed to keep our students active, engaged, and well supervised. This application does not assure final enrollment but provides information upon which a decision will be based 04 Assessment Assessment will be scheduled for all applicants. O'Ryan Scholarship Fund Annual Appeal In-Kind Gifts Alumni GSBH Store VIRTUS & Fingerprinting Schedules VIRTUS® Protecting God’s Children Adult Awareness Session is a three-hour training that helps clergy, staff, volunteers and parents to understand the facts and myths about child sexual abuse; how perpetrators operate; and how caring adults can take five important steps to keep children safe. The parent session also stresses monitoring of computers, cell phones and other technology that perpetrators use to gain access to children and young peopleThe Archdiocese of Los Angeles mandates this training for all adults working with children. This education component helps prevent child sexual abuse by first making every adult employee and volunteer aware of the issues surrounding child sexual abuse. This includes awareness of the many ways sexual abuse harms its victims, their families, the parish, and the community. The awareness session also helps adults learn to recognize the warning signs of abuse and shows them the appropriate way to respond to suspicious behavior. Finally, the awareness session empowers each person with five steps to help prevent child sexual abuse. More than 150,000 priests, deacons, parish and school staff members and volunteers have already participated in these sessions throughout the five Pastoral Regions of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Our goal is to provide this training to all adults who work with children so we can work together as a more effective community to prevent child sexual abuse. This program is a phone application downloaded onto your smart phone, (found in the app store) and will allow you to notify the school of pick-up changes and authorize others to pick-up your child from school, alert you when your child has been picked up, as well as help organize the car line during pick-up. The registration process is easy and we ask that all parents register with the phone application by September 1st. Several resources are included below to help you understand how to use the application and assist you with this transition. Please make sure you register with the mobile phone number that we have on file, or the app will not allow you to access your child’s information for security reasons. Good Shepherd Catholic School was founded in 1930 by the Holy Cross Sisters, who were stewards of both the school and parish until 1975. Following their time, the school was led by The Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, with Sr. Leonella Lynch as Principal and Sr. Francis Mary serving as Vice-Principal until 1999. Good Shepherd Catholic School (GSBH) was founded in 1930 and is a Catholic co-educational elementary school for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. We are a culturally diverse school that reflects the cultures in Los Angeles. We are proud of how well our students respect and accept one another. Are there any age requirements? Yes, a child must be at least 5 years of age by September 1st of the year they are to begin Kindergarten. For TK, students must be 4 years of age by September 1st and for our PreK3 program, students must be 3 years of age by September 1st. Are only Catholic students accepted? No, approximately 35% of our student body is non-Catholic.  All students are required to participate in Religion class and attend Mass. Is GSBH accredited? Yes, by both the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and the Western Catholic Education Association . What about the faculty? All of our full-time elementary teachers are credentialed and/or have Master’s Degrees. In addition to the classroom teachers, we also have specialists in Spanish, Physical Education and Music.  Planet Bravo provides a technology specialist to work with our students in PK to Grade 8.  Barnsdall Arts runs our art program at Good Shepherd. What subjects are taught? Our curriculum includes: Religion, Mathematics, English, Literature, Science, Social Studies, Spanish, Music, Fitness and Wellness, Art and Technology. What extra-curricular activities are offered? Many activities are offered according to student interests. The school offers opportunities for students to join Student Council, Yearbook, Choir and Sports.  Beginning in Grade 3, students may join a variety of sports teams, including cross country, golf, flag football, cheerleading, basketball, archery, and track and field events.  The 8th grade also puts on a Musical each year, allowing grades 5, 6, 7 & 8 to audition for the production. Is there After Care available? Yes, our Afterschool Care Program (ASC) provides after school care for our students in grades Pre-K through 8th grade. Our ASC staff provides a safe, nurturing, and interactive program designed to keep our students active, engaged, and well supervised. Hours  MONDAY - THURSDAY                          3:00PM – 5:30PM                                 FRIDAY  12:30PM- 5:30PM What does the school schedule look like? Our campus opens at 7:30am each morning for a start time of 7:50 for students in TK to Grade 8.  After morning assembly on the playground, classes enter the school building to start their day.  PreK begins each day at 7:50am.  Dismissal Monday to Thursday is at 3:00pm with a 12:30pm dismissal each Friday. Parent Club organizes the school’s extracurricular school functions and events. There are a variety of ways to get involved, so look for volunteer opportunities sent throughout the year. Participating is a great way to meet other families within and outside of your classroom(s), while helping our school community to be the vibrant, fun place that it is!
