The following are a few examples of those special programs available at HBUHSD. Academy for the Performing Arts (APA) at Huntington Beach High School Mission Statement To provide a creative education that cultivates in students the focus, dedication and collaboration necessary to achieve excellence in the arts. Vision To inspire our youth to become the confident artists, leaders and audiences of the future through academic, technical and artistic education. Mantra Igniting the creative artists of the future. What is APA? The Academy for the Performing Arts (APA) is a magnet program of HBUHSD that started in 1993. The program was started to provide an intensive educational program that cultivates in students the discipline, dedication, and commitment necessary to achieve excellence in the arts and to inspire our youth to become artists and audiences of the future through academic, artistic, and aesthetic education. The program strives to create a scholarly atmosphere for talented young performers, writers, composers and technicians alike, offering pre-professional arts education in a comprehensive high school setting. Center for International Business and Communication Studies (CIBACS) at Edison High School Mission Statement To prepare students for tomorrow’s high-tech international business environment. To equip students with effective communication and technology skills. To encourage creative, responsible, self-motivated students who are life-long learners What is CIBACS? Center for International Business and Communication Studies (CIBACS) is a four-year magnet program at Edison High School. It was started in 1995 by Gary Rhoades and Richard Gruner. Both men are former teachers at Edison High School . CIBACS is a unique program that offers its students an enriched and integrated curriculum that is enhanced through competitive projects, job shadowing, and internships with business partners. Students are prepared to progress to advanced applications of technology. They are taught to access, interpret and employ verbal, nonverbal, and electronic sources of information. Students learn to work effectively in a team and are sensitive to needs, problems, aspirations and customs of other cultures. CIBACS produces high school graduates who meet the employability requirements for tomorrow’s high tech, international business environment. CIBACS students are challenged by creating a portfolio highlighting skills and achievements. CIBACS students will speak, write, and listen effectively, and will deliver persuasive presentations. After working for many weeks they present a final project to a panel of judges. International Baccalaureate (IB) at Ocean View High School Mission Statement The International Baccalaureate Organization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the IBO works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment. These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. What is International Baccalaureate? International Baccalaureate (IB) is a magnet program at Ocean View High School , designed to meet the needs of highly motivated students and to promote international understanding. As a two-year, comprehensive and rigorous pre-university program, IB provides one of the most respected secondary educations available. Successful IB candidates are typically granted advanced placement credit at the finest universities and colleges in the nation. The effectiveness of the IB program is due not only to the depth of the individual courses, but also to the comprehensive nature of the program. Unlike other honors programs, the IB Program requires each student to take courses in six academic areas. Students participating in the full diploma program are actively engaged in a liberal arts curriculum that includes: Curriculum containing six subject groups Research paper (extended essay) Critical thinking class (theory of knowledge) Participation in extracurricular activities and community services (CAS) *Magnet - Programs designed to draw students interested in a particular field to a school. As we embark on this journey together, I am deeply committed to working with all of you to make a positive impact in the lives of our students and to uphold the district’s mission: to prepare, educate, and inspire our students to change the world.   Since joining HBUHSD in 2012, I have been inspired by the incredible dedication and support shown by our students, staff, parents, and community members. Your involvement in the countless learning opportunities and extracurricular activities helps foster a sense of family that truly makes our district special.   Located in central Orange County, HBUHSD proudly serves nearly 14,000 students from four elementary feeder school districts: Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach City, Ocean View, and Westminster. Our district is home to six comprehensive high schools, two alternative high schools, and an adult education program, all of which enjoy both local recognition and a national reputation.   Our successes, including high test scores, interscholastic championships, and acclaimed performing arts, are a direct result of our strong teaching faculty, dedicated classified staff, and a leadership team of school site administrators who are supported by a well-respected and knowledgeable Board of Trustees. Together, with strong parent and community advocates, we are able to educate, prepare, and inspire our students to achieve greatness.   We achieve our mission through educational programs that emphasize the development of essential life-long skills. We provide innovative learning pathways to support student achievement, connect students through interactive and engaging instruction, and increase student success through access to the most challenging and relevant curriculum. Our focus on the best instructional practices and data-driven decisions ensures our students are equipped with 21st-century literacy and writing skills, as well as a solid foundation in mathematics and science. These skills are crucial to ensure our students graduate college and career ready. I am also proud to highlight our championship athletic programs, outstanding arts programs, and career technical education courses, which provide students with valuable skills and experiences that prepare them for their future. Our district is committed to offering classes and extracurricular opportunities that focus on both life skills and college and career readiness, ensuring that every student has the tools they need to succeed. Thank you for supporting our schools and contributing to the ongoing process of developing students who will be the future leaders of our society. Your dedication and support are invaluable, and I look forward to working with all of you to continue making a difference in our students' lives. Sincerely, Carolee Ogata, Ed.D.
