Our APPIC directory listing (#2652) can be viewed here . The internship program is designed to prepare interns to effectively deliver psychological services in community mental health settings, with a focus on serving marginalized populations who often experience co-occurring disorders (mental health and substance use issues), homelessness, criminal justice involvement, and systemic barriers to care. To achieve this, our training curriculum is focused on evidence-based practices, trauma-informed care, harm reduction, motivational interviewing, and cultural competency. Interns will participate inweekly didactic training (2 hours), individual supervision (2 hours), and group supervision (2 hours). All interns complete a main rotation at Adult Outpatient Services and select minor rotations at one of our outpatient or residential programs. Interns may choose one year-long minor rotation or two six-month rotations. The internship handbook can be viewed and downloaded here . The HealthRight 360 Doctoral Internship is an APPIC Member. HealthRIGHT 360 was created in 2011 as the merger of Haight Ashbury Medical Clinics and Walden House , two San Francisco organizations that became national models of community healthcare through over forty years of service. Since 1967, Haight Ashbury Medical Clinics has been an innovator in delivering primary health care services to many of the people who can least afford them. “Health Care is a Right, Not a Privilege” has been the guiding principle as well as its famous tagline. Since 1969, Walden House has treated people with mental health and substance use disorder problems at various residential and outpatient centers throughout California, including in-prison treatment programs, and facilities in San Francisco and Los Angeles, providing drug and alcohol treatment and mental health, vocational and housing services for people transitioning back into their communities. Asian American Recovery Services (AARS) joined the family of HealthRIGHT 360 programs in 2013. Founded in 1985, AARS has grown to serve thousands of people throughout San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties. In 2014, North County Serenity House of San Diego County and Women’s Recovery Association (WRA) of San Mateo joined HealthRIGHT 360, continuing its leadership as a provider of gender-responsive services for women and women with children. Prototypes joined in 2016 expanding behavioral health care for women and children and services to survivors of domestic violence in Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura Counties. Rock Medicine has evolved into a full program of HealthRIGHT 360, and has provided service at an ever-growing number of concerts, community marches, celebrations and fairs, circuses, and assorted other events. In recent years, its 800+ active volunteers have provided care at over 1200 events in a single year. In 2023, Acceptance Place joined HealthRIGHT 360, adding to our residential treatment services to serve male individuals identifying as Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender (F/M). ** HR 360 Substance Use Disorder Treatment programs are licensed or certified by the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) ** For a specific license/certification number and expiration date please visit this link . In 1972, the late Bill Graham asked the Haight Ashbury Free Clinic to staff a “medical emergency care tent” at outdoor Grateful Dead and Led Zeppelin concerts. Many of the clinicians who participated had previously provided their medical expertise at rock concerts, but the level of planning for these events was unprecedented. Since then, Rock Medicine has evolved into a full program of HealthRIGHT 360, and has provided service at an ever-growing number of concerts, community marches, celebrations and fairs, circuses, and assorted other events. In recent years, its 800+ active volunteers have provided care at over 1200 events in a single year. Rock Medicine is a mobile facility. Its work areas range from dusty fields with nylon parachutes slung overhead, to three rooms with three sinks, a bathroom, and built in storage space. A comprehensive inventory of supplies, medications and equipment travels with Rock Medicine wherever it’s sent, in “road boxes” modeled on those the bands use to transport their equipment. Some liken Rock Medicine to an urgent care center, a front line station where patients come for minor illnesses, injury, referral and/or transport when necessary. We promote self-sufficiency while ensuring safety and shelter for those in need. In 1986 Vivian Brown, PhD, and Maryann Fraser, LCSW, MBA founded Prototypes with the goal to change treatment for women and their children. The first residential treatment facility for women and their children began serving clients in 1988. Throughout the years, Prototypes expanded its services by opening additional facilities and serving more individuals. Today, Prototypes operates several sites in Southern California, annually serving more than 10,000 women, men and children. Prototypes is a lifeline to women who are struggling with addiction and other serious issues such as domestic violence and mental illness. Many of these women are mothers who face an impossible choice: give up their children to foster care or a guardian, or continue to suffer. With a proven model of comprehensive, integrated social services, Prototypes has evolved into one of the nation’s leading behavioral healthcare providers and is a “prototype” for other such organizations. Substance Use Disorder Treatment Programs “ We have to stop overdoses and save lives so that a person can recover. A dead person does not get a second chance at life .” – Dr. Vitka Eisen, President & CEO HealthRIGHT 360 What is naloxone? Naloxone is a lifesaving, emergency medication, also known as an opioid antagonist, which can be used to reverse the effect of an opioid overdose when administered in a timely manner. HealthRIGHT 360 provides overdose prevention and response training with naloxone to staff at all our facilities. What is an opioid overdose? An opioid overdose is a medical emergency that occurs when a person takes an amount of an opioid drug, or combination of drugs, that is more than their body can process. A person experiencing an opioid overdose can suffer from “opioid-induced respiratory depression,” which means the person’s breathing slows down, becomes irregular, and can even stop, resulting in loss of consciousness and potentially death. How is naloxone administered? Naloxone is relatively safe, effective, and easy to use when responding to a suspected opioid overdose. Naloxone can be delivered both via intranasal spray and injection. Intranasal naloxone comes in pre-filled devices that spray medication into the nose, where it is quickly absorbed through the mucosal tissue. For intranasal Narcan spray , which is one of the more readily available intranasal naloxone products, the dosage for both adults and children is one spray (0.4mg) in one nostril. Injectable naloxone (0.4mg/ml) is a solution that comes in vials (1ml or 10ml) and is administered via syringe into a muscle or under the skin. The injectable naloxone dosage is 0.4mg in adults, and 0.1 mg per kg body weight in children. No matter the route of administration, it is important to receive training on how and when to use naloxone. What is the difference between intranasal spray naloxone and injectable naloxone? Both forms of naloxone are relatively safe, effective, and easy to use. The differences between the two administration routes are in the concentration of naloxone a dose contains – there is more naloxone in the intranasal spray as it must be absorbed, and less naloxone in the injectable as it enters the bloodstream. Other factors include availability, personal preference, and cost. Injectable naloxone is less expensive to obtain. For experienced responders, injectable naloxone has the advantage that in administration a responder can choose to titrate (use less than a dose), which is done to prevent or reduce withdrawal symptoms in individuals who have an opioid use disorder. How does naloxone work? During an overdose, opioids can cause slowed, irregular, or stopped breathing, which may result in loss of consciousness and potential death. When administered as an overdose intervention, naloxone (as an opioid antagonist) displaces and blocks opioids from attaching to opioid receptors, temporarily stopping their effects and reversing the overdose. Naloxone saves lives because it can quickly restore normal breathing to a person experiencing an opioid overdose. Can naloxone reverse an overdose that is not caused by an opioid? Naloxone only works to counteract the effects of opioid drugs; it has no effect on reversing overdoses from other substances. Comparable overdose reversal medications for non-opioid drugs do not yet exist. What happens if I administer naloxone when someone doesn’t need it? If a person receiving a dose of naloxone has used drugs other than opioids, naloxone is not contraindicated, will have no harmful effects, and will not cause any adverse medical issues. Naloxone is not a controlled substance, and it is not addictive. Who should carry naloxone? In California, everyone is legally allowed to carry naloxone, give it to someone experiencing an overdose, and potentially save a life. It is especially important to carry naloxone if someone you know is at an increased risk for overdose. California’s Good Samaritan and Liability laws protect people providing emergency medical care at the scene of a medical emergency, including the administration of naloxone during an overdose. Y
