Organizations that qualify through their commitment to individuals with developmental disabilities can submit a Letter of Interest. If approved, they will be allowed access to our online grant application. Helpers’ grants are for facility improvement projects (infrastructure), not for programs or general operating support. Who reviews my grant request? All submitted grant requests are initially reviewed and vetted by Helpers Executive Director and the Helpers Community grant award committee. Approved Letters of Interest will be invited to submit a full proposal which will be reviewed and discussed by The Helpers Community Board of Directors. Upon the recommendation of the grant award committee, The Helpers Board of Directors will then vote to approve their support of the submitted proposal, and the amount of the grant to be funded. How much money should my organization request? There is a range of grant award amounts. You should determine the amount of funding you need for your project and submit the amount you are requesting in your project overview. For additional information, please refer to the information included in the grant process and grant deadlines/timelines pages. If our Organization is declined funding, can we reapply? Yes, you can reapply in the following year. Helpers Community will only approve one grant submitted by an organization for each calendar year. For additional information, refer closely to the Helpers Community grant process page. What is the process an organization has to complete to apply for a grant from Helpers? Please visit our Grant Process page. What are the timeline and key dates I need to know when applying for a Helper’s grant? Letters of Interest must be received by June 30th each year. If your LOI is approved you will be invited to complete and submit the online grant application by August 30th. Grant decisions will be made by September 30th. Please see our Grant Process and Deadlines/Timelines pages. Can I apply for more than one Helpers grant within a calendar year? No; Helpers organizations will only be considered for 1 award grant in any calendar year. Are new nonprofit organizations eligible to apply for a Helper's grant? Are there any additional guidelines or criteria that apply to organizations applying for a first-time grant? For organizations applying for their first “Request for Funding” (RFF) to Helpers Community, the Board of Directors requires a scheduled site visit to the organization by the Helpers Community Executive Director and additional Board member(s). This required site visit allows us to become more familiar with the organization’s leadership and learn more about the specific program or project area of need. I am the Executive Director for a Bay Area nonprofit with a mission to provide Day Care and program support for Kindergarten through elementary school children. Is my organization eligible for a Helper’s award grant? No, Helpers Community provides grant award support for infrastructure needs of organizations whose mission aligns with ours to serve Adults (over 18) with Developmental Disabilities. If a board member or employee of a Bay Area or California nonprofit has a relative, sibling, or significant other who is an employee or board member at Helpers Community is the organization eligible for a Helper’s grant? As per the Helpers Community Conflict of Interest policy, when a person in a position of authority at an organization, such as an officer, board director, or key employee benefits directly (financially) from a decision he or she could make in such capacity, which may include direct or indirect benefits to family member(s) or business(s) with which the person is closely associated, this may be perceived as a potential/perceived conflict of interest. Therefore, the organization would not be eligible for an award grant from HCI.   Facebook X Instagram © 2026 Helpers Community, Inc ® a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Our Mission Helpers Community is dedicated to supporting Adults with Developmental Disabilities and Organizations that serve them. Our Vision Investing in environments for Adults with Developmental Disabilities where their talents are accepted, recognized, and promoted with dignity. Who We Serve Helpers Community provides support for individuals with Developmental Disabilities. Helpers partners with other Bay Area nonprofits to ensure that adults with Developmental Disabilities have the opportunities for growth and safe living environments everyday. At Helpers, our impact is measured in lives touched and futures transformed. Our 2024 Annual Report—Ripples, Roots, and Results—celebrates the stories, partnerships, and community investments that shaped an extraordinary year. Thanks to your support, we expanded access to housing, empowered artists, and sparked innovation through grants that continue to ripple forward. Take a look at the year you helped build. View the Report Our History As with any long journey, the long road we’ve traveled has had some blind curves and a few bumps, but we’ve managed to stay the course and remain true to our mission. Founded in 1953 by Sister Miriam Auxilium O’Gara, to serve adults with Down Syndrome, our organization incorporated in 1957 and received its 501(c)(3) status in 1958. Helpers Community began raising funds to purchase and operate some of the first group homes for adults with developmental disabilities in the San Francisco Bay Area. The first Helpers’ home was opened in 1963, followed by two others in 1966 and 1973. The three properties provided residential living opportunities in beautiful homes for 12 women and 6 men. Helpers’ homes were in operation until 2003, when the last one closed. After decades of good fortune with dedicated staff members, who’d lived in the homes and devotedly cared for the residents, staff retired or passed away. The staffing challenges were exacerbated by the IT boom in San Francisco in the mid 1990’s to the early 2000’s. The Bay Area was one of the nation’s leading job creating regions which made it next to impossible to find, stable, qualified 24/7 residential staff. In addition to providing residential care, Helpers operated an Activity Center from 1966 until 2003 where the residents developed their craft and sewing skills to create beautiful handmade items. In 1966, Ghirardelli Square invited Helpers to host a weekend bazaar to sell the handmade creations made at Helpers Activity Center, as well as donated items from Helpers’ supporters. Helpers hosted pop-up bazaars at Ghirardelli Square until 1974 when Ghirardelli Square offered the in-kind donation of a permanent storefront to Helpers, known as Helpers Bazaar. In 2018, Helpers, in partnership with Pomeroy Recreation & Rehabilitation Center, re-opened a residence on Fulton Street, serving six adults with special needs. Another Helper’s residence in this partnership, also on Fulton Street, opened a few months later. After more than 40 years of generosity, Ghirardelli needed their retail space back. Reborn as Helpers Artisan Boutique, the store moved from the Ghirardelli location to 1947 Union Street, in a lively retail area of Cow Hollow. Our grand opening occurred in April 2019. NEW timeline for Helpers Yearly Grant cycle and LOI Guidelines: All Letters of Interest (LOIs) must be received NO LATER than June 30, 2026 . Organizations with approved LOIs must submit a grant application NO LATER than August 30, 2026. LOI Guidelines The first step in our grantmaking process is the submission of a Letter of Interest. This brief summary allows us to better understand your organization, the community you serve, and the purpose of your funding request for an infrastructure/facilities/site need. This helps us get to know your organization, your community, and what you are hoping to accomplish with our support. The LOI must be no more than two pages in length. We ask that LOI applicants include: Contact information and the location where the proposed services or project benefiting from the needed infrastructure will take place. A brief description of your mission and organizational history. An overview of what you do , who you serve , approximately how many individuals benefit annually, and how this infrastructure need is critical to your mission and services. A summary of your program impact from the last 2 years. The amount of funding requested , keeping in mind our typical grant awards range from $15,000 to $25,000, and if any other potential funders have been approached or have committed to fund a portion of this infrastructure need. Applicants may submit one LOI per year by emailing it to our Executive Director, Robert “Harry” Harrison at: [email protected] AN ORGANIZATION’S LETTER OF INTENT MUST RECEIVE APPROVAL PRIOR TO BEING INVITED TO SUBMIT A FULL GRANT APPLICATION If LOI is approved, your completed grant application must be received NO LATER than August 30th by completing the Online grant application found on the Helpers website. By clicking SUBMIT, your application is electronically sent to: [email protected] . Please remember to SAVE your application prior to submitting electronically. Final Approval will be made by September 30th . Those organizations who have been approved for a grant by the Board of Directors of Helpers Community will be notified and grant funds disbursed electronically. Additional NEW Grant Criteria: – In the event that an organization does not spend the entire amount of its award grant (unspent funds): The Grantees must notify Helpers at least 60 days before the end of the grant period if a project will have unspent funds. At that time, grantees may request a budget revision to support an additional capital infrastructure project. This revision will be subject to Helpers’ approval of the use of any remaining funds. It will be optional for the grantee to submit a budget revision for an additional project or to return funds. Thank you for your continued support!   For further information and/or to submit a Letter of Interest and other documents, please email your LOI no more than two pages in length, stating your case for support following the above guidelines, to our Executive Director, Robert “Harry” Harrison at: [email protected] . His commitment to community service and implementing the pursuit of positive change led him to a career in philanthropy. Harry refined his leadership skills and management experience at Levi Strauss & Company, where he enjoyed a career in a progression of management roles with increased responsibility, that spanned more than twenty years. In 2002, Harry was the Regional Director (East Coast) of Sales and Marketing for all brands and consumer segments, accountable for all P&L responsibilities for a $125M business. Harry’s initial orientation in philanthropy began with the Trey Whitfield School (TWS) in Brooklyn, NY. During his 10 years as Director of Development, Harry and the senior leadership at TWS, together envisioned, created and implemented a $6M Capital Fund campaign which would contribute to Trey Whitfield School being recognized as a beacon of hope in NYC inner city education. After TWC, he went on to serve as the Executive Director for the YMA (Fashion Scholarship Fund), a national non-profit association made up of influential members of the fashion community. The organization is dedicated to promoting education of the fashion arts and business by facilitating internships, mentorships, career programs and scholarship grants to talented students. During his time there he led the growth of member schools from 9 schools (2005), awarding 19 scholarships, to 46 schools and disbursement of 125 scholarships (2013.) Harry’s passion for community service is expressed through his involvement as a Volunteer with Compass Family Services and SPUR, both in San Francisco. He is also a member of both the National Arts Club and Gramercy Park Building Association in NYC. Marilyn Harrison, Retail Marketing Director “Featuring, curating and building awareness of the creative endeavors of talented artists and Individuals with Developmental Disabilities is an inspiration and a joy!” Marilyn became a volunteer with Helpers Community Inc’s Helpers Artisan Boutique in 2019. Currently a member of the National Arts Club, NY, NY. Growing up in Honolulu, Hawaii, diversity was always a part of Marilyn’s life. Her desire to work with philanthropy began with her tenure at LS & Co, an organization which believes in “inclusiveness, diversity, giving back, supporting vulnerable communities, employee volunteerism, sustainability, and belief in the values of empathy, originality, integrity, courage.” While in NY she served on the Board of Directors for Mercado Global, a 15-year-old Brooklyn based nonprofit and accessory brand, which empowers rural Guatemalan women to become entrepreneurs. Being at Helpers Community provides the opportunity to work with individuals with developmental disabilities giving them a voice and building awareness of their talent through showcasing their art and products. Officers of the Board   To review our Board Criteria please download the document here Margaret “Peggy” Bachecki, Board President “Helpers has been a part of the community for over 60 years. Certainly, challenges surfaced, but the mission has always been to help those with developmental disabilities.” Peggy discovered Helpers in 1966. She became Helper’s first part-time and then a full-time employee in the office and then went on to supervise the activity program until 1973, when she left her paid position. She stayed connected as a volunteer. The Board of Directors invited her to join in 1995. She was instrumental in the operation of Helpers’ three group homes, the launch of the activity program, and the opening of Helpers Bazaar at Ghirardelli Square and the closing of the group homes in 2003. The mission then became the granting of funds to other agencies who work and care for those with developmental disabilities. The intent of the Board remained reopening the group homes. That goal became a reality through a partnership with the Pomeroy Recreation and Rehabilitation Center. Peggy embraced the plan to create a job training and employment site at the Helpers Artisan Boutique, for those with developmental disabilities, in partnership with the Pomeroy Center and the ARC of San Francisco. She acknowledges that while Helpers has been a part of the community for over 50 years, the organization has been challenged in many ways over this time period, but the mission as has always been to help those with developmental disabilities. Peggy retired after 36 years as an office manager for Uccelli & Associates Court Reporting. Uli K. Chettipally, Vice President Dr. Uli K. I just ran into a friend at the post office, who told me she was on Union Street recently, killing time before an appointment, and walked by your store. Something in the window caught her eye and she went in, and just fell in love with the place. While browsing she came across the Big Wave section, which she has heard me talk about through the years, and saw my daughter Emmy’s representation. She said how being in the store made her day, changed her mood (she’s always a pretty upbeat person anyways!) It really touched her, which really touched me. So glad to have ‘found’ you and look forward to returning. Happy Customers! Great experience! Great customer service! Awesome products! Beautiful idea! Love it! Anonymous Friendly staff. Anonymous Hi Marilyn Thank you for ordering my two additional coasters. I love them. I really enjoy shopping in your store. Chris, and the other person there who manages the store at times were so helpful in helping me choose items yesterday. I also bought one of the vintage ornaments, Noah’s Ark, which I think may be left over from the original store at Ghirardelli Square? He said the vintage ornaments are going quickly, as are the coasters. The store was full of nice items. Chris told me a lot about the various items, the history, all the pop up stores you have done, etc. He also helped me find a photo of the 4 ceramic coasters I bought a little while back, and which I had messaged you about. I am elderly, and tech-challenged, and I am having some trouble navigating the features on a brand new iPhone. He found the photo in Messages and put it where it is supposed to be on my phone. As you know, Chris is quite good with the iPhone. He said he teaches this to some of your clients. After finding the photo, he taught me how to do a few little things on my new iPhone , and also how to protect the battery from wearing down. When I tried taking an iPhone class at a senior center a month or so ago, I could not hear the instructor. As always, both workers were so kind about my various disabilities. I don’t hear well. I have to navigate by using two walking sticks, and I have some eye issues. It takes time for me to find things with the strong glasses I have to wear for walking because of my strabismus, but which are not good for up -close things. Your workers are always so patient and kind and understanding with me . To say the least, I have not always been treated that way by people who have so-called “normal” intellectual and social abilities. I’m sure other physically challenged persons have occasionally had the same painful and socially isolating experiences as me. Perhaps because they, too, have some disabilities ,which might bring judgement from others, that is part of what makes your employees so compassionate and considerate. Take care, and happy holidays. Funding landscapes shifted. Costs rose. Infrastructure that had been aging quietly suddenly couldn’t wait.  More than forty organizations applied for Helpers grants this year, requesting a combined total of over $1.4 million. Our grant budget was $200,000.  Applicants had everything they needed to do their work — except the one piece of essential infrastructure that held everything together.  But “essential” looked different for each one. For some, it was the essential safety of a home— climate control failing in a group home in San Rafael, a pool requiring safety upgrades in San Francisco, kitchens deteriorating in residences where people have built their lives in Napa. For others, it was the essential access that makes programs possible — ADA pathways for an organization in Malibu rebuilding after wildfire, barn repairs at a camp for children with disabilities near Yosemite, equipment for a ranch in Santa Rosa that serves hundreds of people every week through therapeutic horsemanship. And for others still, it was the essential voice of creative expression — art documentation tools at a San Francisco studio where artists with developmental disabilities produce world-class work, a hydroponic growing system in Sonoma that gives program participants hands-on vocational skills they can carry into employment.  Essential safety. Essential access. Essential voice. All different — all urgent — all part of the same community.  “When you create beautiful, purposeful spaces for people with developmental disabilities, you send a powerful message of inclusion and opportunity .” Bryan Neider, CEO, AbilityPath  We had a choice. We could do the best we could with the budget we had, or we could change the budget. Because of you, we changed the budget.  This response was only possible because of your sustained support. Year after year, you gave Helpers the capacity to meet this moment — not next quarter, not after a planning cycle, but now. The board doubled our grant commitment to $400,000. We funded every qualifying applicant within the Greater SF Bay Area. Twenty-one organizations — nine of them receiving Helpers support for the first time. $384,300 disbursed— a significant increase and among the largest commitments in our history.  “It has been my lifelong dream to create a true place of belonging for my daughter . Not just a place where she can live, but a place where she can truly thrive.” Jeff Peck, Founder, Big Wave Project  The pressures that drove this unprecedented demand aren’t going away. Facilities age. Costs rise. The community’s needs keep growing. Pony Express five years of silence “When you come out and you’re working with a horse, they don’t see your label. They meet you where you are. ” Linda Aldridge, Executive Director In 2019, Pony Express’s impact was undeniable. Through its programs at Santa Rosa’s Howarth Park, thousands of people — including many with developmental disabilities — were stepping into a corral and learning a different way to communicate. No words required. Just breath, presence, and the willingness to listen with your whole body.  Andrew came out of curiosity. When he started, he was largely nonverbal. But in the corral, he didn’t need to talk. “Whenever I’m around them, I have to be truly aware of every hint and detail,” he says. “You start to really see for the first time who and what you are as a whole.”  Then, in September 2020, the Glass Fire destroyed Pony Express Ranch. Only one barn survived — smoke-damaged, unusable. The corrals at Howarth Park — the ones Andrew had walked into out of curiosity — went quiet for five years. Without that barn, the program was stuck at ten to twenty people a week.  “After the Glass Fire decimated our ranch, we had nothing. Our ability to move forward was questionable.”  Linda  Your support rebuilt the barn. With it functional, Linda expanded her herd and returned to Howarth Park, bringing programs back to the scale the community had lost.  And Andrew? The awareness he built with horses followed him into the world. He got a job at Oliver’s Market. He’s worked there ever since. As Linda says: “You can’t take the horse with you. But you can take the way the horse makes you feel with you.” Camp Via West where you can “The world is incredibly isolating when you have a disability. You’re usually the only person you know that has that disability.”  Alyssa Pecorino, Camp Director Alyssa was born Deaf. At ten years old, she went to summer camp and heard “you can” for the first time. It changed the course of her life. Today she runs Camp Via West — the only camp in Silicon Valley serving people with disabilities — giving over five hundred campers every summer the same thing she found at ten.  At the heart of camp is the art barn — a space where campers build confidence, communicate through what they create, and discover a different way of thinking. For campers who are non speaking, creative expression becomes its own language. They take what they make home with them. These small mementos become powerful reminders of memories, of friends, and most importantly, of the community they are a part of — how they are not alone.  But for years, some campers couldn’t be part of it. No ADA accessible bathrooms. No sensory accommodations.  Alyssa knew exactly what that space could do for a kid — she’d lived it. But infrastructure kept some of her campers out.  Helpers worked to fix these gaps. Over five years, breakthrough grants funded ADA bathrooms, sound panels, a safety path to the sports field, and the new artificial all-purpose turf on the athletic fields. The building became a place for every camper, allowing each one to learn, explore, and take home some of the magic they felt on those warm summer days. Families notice the difference — someone who went to camp saying one or two words, coming home and speaking sentences.   “Now everyone’s willing to go because we have accommodations there for everyone. ” Alyssa  Some of those campers will do what Alyssa did: carry what they found at camp into the rest of their lives, and build something like this for others. Helpers Artisan Boutique open anyway In January 2025, a main sewage pipe above Helpers Artisan Boutique cracked, pouring water through the ceiling and into the shop, threatening to destroy the paintings, ceramics, and wearable art that lined the walls and shelves.  Retail Marketing Director Marilyn Harrison got there fast. The art was saved. The store was not. Repairs would take almost two months, temporarily closing this essential link between its artists and the pu
