Gail Ewell Founder and Executive Director For over twenty years, Gail Ewell has dedicated her life to education, teacher training, and advocacy. Under her leadership, HTS has grown from a pilot program of five students in 2001 to an award-winning, fully-accredited K-12 school, a licensed preschool, and a vocational education program. Read Gail’s bio Jennifer Straw Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Middle School Director Jennifer Straw has worked in education since 2002 and has been part of the HTS family since 2006. She brings invaluable hands-on classroom experience to her role as our director of curriculum and instruction and her oversight of our middle school program. Our Cre8, Makerspace, and Genius Hours give our students access to materials and resources that build their technology skills and knowledge. Inclusive social-emotional learning Social-emotional learning At HTS, we provide a stable and nurturing environment where students can discover their passions, respect diverse perspectives, and build confidence. Our staff is trained in social-emotional learning (SEL) and embeds social skills into their curriculum. Students are taught to have a growth mindset, use mindfulness skills, engage in flexible and social thinking and more. Full-inclusion of neurodiverse learners HTS students are also given opportunities to learn from and with peers who are different from them. This cultivates in each student a deeper sense of community and respect for others, leading to higher resilience and prevention of declined mental health as children enter adolescence. Middle and high school students compete on a co-ed team against other schools in the League. Fall, Spring, Summer Cross country and track Cross Country Fall season begins in September and finishes in December. Our Spring season of Cross-country and Track starts in March and ends in May. Middle school and high school runners compete at different race distances. Runners train weekly with a monthly meet against schools in the league. NEW THIS SPRING 2025! Flag Football We are excited to launch our inaugural HTS Flag Football season for 6th–12th grade students this spring. The season will run from March 4th to May 1st, with practices held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:45 to 3:45 PM. Flag football will be a great opportunity for students to develop new skills, build teamwork, and enjoy friendly competition in a supportive environment. We look forward to an exciting season ahead! Winter Basketball Join the HTS Huskies basketball team and experience benefits that go beyond the court. Our program teaches students the value of teamwork, working towards common goals, and supporting each other through challenges. We foster empathy and compassion, ensuring every student feels included, no matter their skill level. The friendships and teamwork create a strong sense of family that lasts beyond practices and games. Plus, being part of our basketball team keeps students active, promoting a healthy lifestyle and a love for the sport. Our middle and high school students compete on a co-ed team, practicing twice a week and playing games on Saturdays. Admissions Overview What to know about the application and enrollment process at HTS What you need to know about applying to HTS HTS accepts applications year-round. Follow the steps below to continue with the application process. All applications for admission will be kept on file and reconsidered for two years. After two years, re-application is necessary to remain in the applicant pool. Interested in a tour of HTS? Tours are offered once a month. Visit our tours page to RSVP. See our 2025-2026 tuition rates Application process The following is a snapshot of the steps required for admission. 1. Complete online application Submit your application including the $25 application fee. Submit application 2. Submit required documents The following documents are required: Latest report card and/or progress reports , including special services, and copy of current IEP, or diagnostic reports if applicable Copy of child’s birth certificate Current photograph of your child Consent for Release of Information form ( download ) Completed immunization form ( download ). Interview will be scheduled Once we’ve confirmed payment has been received and documents have been submitted, one of our directors will contact you to schedule an interview with you (in person or over the phone). Note: We will not offer an interview until payment has been received.  4. Shadow at HTS If HTS may be a fit for you, we invite your student to shadow for a day or two in the classroom. 5. Official decision If HTS is an appropriate placement for your child, an official letter of acceptance will be sent. We try to get back to parents within 2-3 weeks of their child’s shadow date. We recommend applying first in order to schedule that time. After submitting an application, we set up a phone interview to learn more about your student. If we believe we may be a good fit, we can then arrange one or two shadow days. Can HTS discontinue a student’s enrollment at any time? Rasarea Chan 2025-07-21T10:33:48-07:00 Can HTS discontinue a student’s enrollment at any time? If, after reasonable and documented efforts to address concerns, it is determined that continued enrollment is no longer in the best interest of the student or the school community, the administration reserves the right to discontinue enrollment at its discretion. Factors considered may include, but are not limited to, the student’s academic, behavioral, social emotional needs, adherence to school policies, or partnership between the family and school. The school will make every effort to communicate concerns and work collaboratively with families before making such decisions. The final determination regarding discontinuation of enrollment is solely at the discretion of the school’s administration, and the school is under no obligation to provide further justification for its decision. The following outlines the Hope Technology School (HTS) Family–School Partnership & Enrollment Agreement . Its purpose is to ensure clear and consistent communication regarding the expectations for our partnership with families, including HTS’s role in external correspondence. Our Partnership Philosophy At Hope Technology School, we are dedicated to providing a nurturing, inclusive, and academically rigorous environment where every student can reach their full potential. We believe that enrollment at HTS signifies a strong partnership between the school and each family. This partnership is built on mutual respect, open communication, and a shared commitment to our inclusive mission . Family–School Partnership and Discontinuation of Enrollment HTS believes that student success flourishes in a partnership founded on trust, respect, and open communication between the school and families. Should concerns arise regarding a student’s behavior or a parent’s engagement with school expectations, we are committed to a collaborative approach: Initial Support: Concerns will be communicated clearly and respectfully. HTS will offer guidance or support when appropriate. Follow-Up: If concerns persist, HTS may request a meeting with the family to align expectations and explore possible resolutions. Final Review: If these efforts do not lead to meaningful improvement, and continued enrollment is no longer in the best interest of the student or the school community, the administration reserves the right to discontinue enrollment. This process reflects HTS’s core values of compassion, inclusion, and educational integrity. Kathy discovered her dream of becoming a teacher while enrolled at HTS from preschool to middle school. Her experiences in the inclusive classrooms developed in her a passion for advocacy. She is currently pursuing a career in urban education, and hopes to work with inner-city, low-income students of migrant families, amplifying the voices of those in marginalized communities.  Read on to learn more about how Kathy’s early experiences at HTS have shaped the advocate she is and the educator she strives to be.  What’s one word you would use to describe your academic experience at HTS? Why? The word I would use is “empowering.”  My experience at HTS changed my life completely. The caring teachers and inclusive environment provided me with a space that nourished my talent, aspirations for the future, and academic curiosity to become the advocate I am today. What are you up to since your enrollment at HTS? I’m currently enrolled in a dual degree master’s program as a history major, going into my senior year at University of San Francisco. I will receive a master’s in urban education as well as my social science teaching credential and bilingual authorization credential in Spanish.  I also recently won a year-long national fellowship (Newman Civic Fellowship) for community service, where I will be able to collaborate with other college student leaders across the nation to come up with innovative solutions for the problems that marginalized communities face. How did your education at HTS prepare you for college, work, or other aspects of life after graduation? In more ways than I can mention! I have wanted to be a teacher since I was five years old because I loved the classroom and I loved learning. Now, as a college student, my drive to become a teacher has shifted. I hope to become a teacher because I am passionate about amplifying the voices of students typically marginalized in public education. HTS was where this passion began to stir inside me.  From a young age, the inclusive classroom environment taught me that everyone should get a seat at the table, no matter their ability . No one should be left behind and we should involve ourselves in communities where everyone is valued. A simple lesson has stuck with me even after graduation. I remember my fifth grade teacher at HTS teaching our class how to be “leaders for good.” In the classroom, being a leader for good meant making sure no one was excluded or left behind in our collective pursuit towards growth and improvement. In life, I have found that it means advocating for people around me and the communities in which I live. I have taken this deeply to heart in a lot of community service activism I have participated in throughout the years. How has learning in inclusive classrooms changed your life for the better? Participating in inclusive classrooms has influenced what I aspire to have in my own classrooms as a future teacher. Specifically, it has influenced how I cultivate an environment in which every student feels welcomed, no matter their ability or background. In our world today, differences are often presented as negative barriers that separate individuals. At HTS, I learned that differences were not just normal, but actually crucial to creating an environment in which every student could thrive no matter their ability. This understanding is extremely important in our world today in order to build friendships with people of different beliefs, races, religions, etc. It is essential to develop a deep sense of empathy, understanding, grace, and compassion for others around us, which I believe our world deeply needs at this moment. What would you tell someone who is considering attending HTS? I would tell them to take the opportunity! The experience I’ve had and things I’ve learned at HTS I will never forget. I fully believe that HTS is a model for inclusive, innovative, and life-changing education. I hope that the public education system can learn from this model because it would change the lives of students across the nation for the better. Speech-language pathology services (SLPS) Speech-language pathology services (SLPS) offers speech therapy, early language stimulation, and language therapy provided by either our speech language pathologist (SLP) or SLP-assistant (SLPA). To receive services, our SLP first evaluates the student’s overall communication abilities. If therapy is recommended, the SLP will propose goals based on the assessments and the child’s unique needs. Once goals and service frequency are agreed upon, the SLP will collaborate with teachers to schedule regular therapy sessions during the school day and develop an individualized service plan (ISP). These sessions are integrated into our innovative, technology-rich classrooms, fostering an inclusive and diverse environment for all students. Individualized service and learning plans As part of our accommodations, we develop personalized plans to support each student’s unique needs. They’re encouraged to make mistakes, manage their decisions, and build confidence through practical skills. ” — Kelly Chua , LSP instructor Entrepreneurial ventures Our LSP students initiated a small coffee cart business, providing coffee to teachers while gaining hands-on experience in customer service, finance, business management, teamwork, and collaboration. This venture not only offers practical skills but also ensures a strong, active presence throughout the school campus. Innovative communication solutions Inspired by LSP students, we developed software such as Quick Talk and Quick Type . These apps assist nonverbal individuals in communicating, showcasing the profound impact our students have on technological advancements. Connections in the community Some of our LSP students received a personalized video from the Golden State Warriors’ Draymond Green, acknowledging their efforts and accomplishments. A day in the life Each year, we tailor our class to meet the students’ needs, creating a dynamic and personalized daily experience, while maintaining our mission of inclusion and empowerment. Shaping our “workplace” environment As part of learning vocational and life skills, students walk into the classroom and begin the “work day.” Students “clock in” and “clock out,” and get “paid” every Monday. Using their hard earned money, they’re able to purchase items from our class store. We’ve found that students will often buy things for loved ones aside from themselves. Students are active members of the classroom and as such, their presence and contribution to the class is highly emphasized. Entrepreneurial enterprises Part of our mission at HTS is to engage in projects for our students to apply the skills learned in the classroom to the world outside of it. Our ongoing small coffee cart business works together alongside some of our middle and high school students to create a name, a flier, and a schedule for the coffee cart to deliver midday drinks to our staff. Every student has a role and a part to play in the success of the coffee cart from taking, making, and delivering the orders to our staff. Empowering our students through technology Our goal at Hope Technology School is to harness the power of technology to not only enhance the curriculum but also to make it accessible for every student. For some, technology is not just an aid but a necessity to fully engage with the educational content. We understand the importance of providing tailored support, whether it’s reading information aloud or assisting with writing and communication. Our commitment is to ensure that technology serves as a bridge, enabling all students, including those who are nonverbal, to communicate effectively and thrive in their learning journey. Quick facts about LSP To help our families determine if LSP is the right fit, please review these key points regarding our program’s scope. What We Are An Enrichment Program We focus on practical life skills, workplace readiness, and personal growth. A Supplement We are a “plus-on” to your child’s existing education—homeschool, private, or public. Privately Funded We are supported solely by tuition and fees paid by families. What We Are Not Not a School We do not grant high school diplomas or official transcripts. Not a Placement Participation here does not satisfy state “compulsory education” requirements. Parents must maintain their student’s legal school enrollment. Not a Service Provider We do not provide clinical therapy, 1-on-1 aides, or mandated IEP services. Messer is a parent of both an HTS alumnus (Dylon, ‘21) and current high school student (Aydon, ‘26) at HTS. Her son, Dylon, is now a student at Santa Clara University pursuing a degree in civil engineering.  Messer’s children have experienced the full range of our holistic and inclusive education, starting in the HTS preschool and continuing through our elementary, middle, and high school programs. Messer has seen her children thrive both academically and socially, which she says is one of the most rewarding aspects of an HTS education.  “Of course, we wanted our children to excel academically,” Messer told us, “but more importantly, we dreamed of them becoming empathetic and caring individuals who use their talents to make a positive impact on those around them. They have grown in empathy, compassion, and respect for others, and have developed great friendships in their time at HTS. Our children felt included and, in turn, learned how to include others.”  Here’s a look into Messer’s story and the growth her children experienced at HTS. What years did your children attend Hope Technology School and what are they doing now? My son started at HTS in preschool in 2007 and graduated with his high school diploma from HTS in 2021. He is now entering his junior year in the civil engineering program at Santa Clara University. My daughter began at the preschool in 2012 and will graduate from the HTS high school program in 2026.  How has HTS helped your children academically? HTS offered a curriculum with ample support from teachers. The small class sizes and individualized attention helped our children excel in subjects that were difficult for them and further challenged them in their stronger subjects. This environment significantly boosted both their confidence and focus. Which teachers, projects, or classes impacted your children the most? My son wanted to take advanced math, and the individualized structure of HTS allowed him to start an advanced calculus class. He also enjoyed learning science in a hands-on physics class. Both experiences instilled a love for the STEM subjects which has inspired him to pursue it in college. My daughter loves the book selections in her English classes as well as engaging in projects like learning how to invest in NASDAQ markets. She has also benefited from the  leadership elective, which has helped her grow in communication and teamwork skills as she’s contributed to organizing various school events.  What would you like other parents to know about HTS? Where schools can often become places of high stress and pressure to succeed, HTS stands out by providing an excellent education while nurturing the whole child.  I attribute this to the exemplary teachers and staff at HTS. They don’t just teach the kids; they see them as individuals. They are patient, dedicated, and knowledgeable, striving to meet each student’s needs and help them reach their highest potential.
