Read the Report Read the Press Release San Francisco Bay Area LGBTQ Community Needs Assessment (2018) Our SF Bay Area LGBTQ Community Needs Assessment investigated gaps between needs and available services in the Bay Area LGBTQ community, uncovering barriers that prevent community members from accessing needed services. The study also probed deeply into difference in experience across factors like sexual orientation and gender identity as well as intersectional factors such as race, ethnicity, age, income, ability, and geography. Learn More and View Interactive Infographics Read the Full Report Survey: The Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on SF Bay Area LGBTQ Organizations (2020) To identify the specific effects of the pandemic on nonprofits, Horizons distributed a survey to a sample of organizations on its mailing list in October 2020. We conducted a preliminary analysis of a subset of respondents that included only Bay Area LGBTQ organizations. It is clear that Bay Area LGBTQ organizations have been significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Individual and institutional donors alike must step up their support, especially for smaller-budget organizations and those focused on people on color (POC), to fill gaps in revenue resulting from the pandemic. I’ve seen justice system-impacted youth build their feelings of safety, belonging, and confidence after participating in queer and trans-affirming programming. I’ve seen Translatinas share their personal experiences through storytelling to encourage their peers to engage in the community rather than hide in fear. I’ve seen LGBTQ elders come out of isolation and connect with each other through peer support and tailored case management. I’ve seen a lot more urgent needs actually met thanks to a crucial partnership between Horizons Foundation, the California LGBTQ Health Equity Initiative, and our local grantee partners. This is what can happen when you move beyond good intentions and leverage systems that truly work for people. I am proud to have been part of Horizons' critical role in resourcing close to two million dollars over two years to non-profits working to deliver critical gender-affirming care to LBTQ people. Horizons served as the prime contractor, and I acted as a bridge between the state and grassroots care providers. The trust that both the state of California and our grantee partners placed in us helped streamline public funding for community-based care, allowing organizations to focus on what they do best: sustaining our community. Throughout the life of the contract, my role extended beyond contract management to providing support, like technical assistance, frequent check-ins, and opportunities for learning and collaboration. When state requirements didn’t align with on-the-ground realities, we helped partners problem-solve so programs could continue without compromising care or safety. This behind-the-scenes work doesn’t often get attention, but it is a critical way community foundations can ensure services continue. And it works! Our partner organizations—Young Women’s Freedom Center, Lyon-Martin Community Health Services, Gender Health Center, El/La Para TransLatinas, Pacific Center for Human Growth, and San Francisco Community Health Center—expanded services, reduced wait times for crisis counseling, and reached people who are too often left behind. One example that stands out is Lyon-Martin's Body Sovereignty Program, a trauma-informed outpatient program for LGBTQ individuals struggling with food and body image. From training their full staff to challenge eating-disorder myths to explicitly centering health behaviors rather than weight, the program intentionally addresses the intersecting impacts of body dysmorphia, fatphobia, gender dysphoria, and racism that affect many in our LGBTQ community. Each time I checked in with Lyon-Martin staff, I was met with valuable insight into their work and a deep, genuine connection to the community. As the contract comes to an end, I am focused on what made this partnership successful and what is at risk if the infrastructure that supported it is not sustained. The need is clear for durable structures that ensure resources reach communities in ways that are flexible and responsive to our rapidly changing realities, especially as resources directed toward LGBTQ communities continue to shrink. Horizons has demonstrated what this can look like. We helped position and strengthen community-based organizations to access limited government funding opportunities when they were available. I encourage my peers in philanthropy, and community foundations in particular, to continue bridging the gap between local organizations and government investments both by sustaining supportive infrastructure and by ensuring organizations are ready to compete for and manage public funds as opportunities arise. The damage is not hypothetical. It is already underway and poised to expand. With a global lens and deeper focus on Africa, Latin America, and Western Europe, the report documents how fundamentalist networks are obliterating hard-won gains in women’s and LGBTQ rights and eroding fundamental freedoms. The stakes are profound, threatening decades of human rights progress. Horizons Foundation was proud to host a Horizons Forum on March 12 in partnership with GPAHE to share the findings from the groundbreaking report, explain what is already at stake, and engage in an urgent conversation about accountability and human rights resilience. Watch the Recording Listen to the Audio Meet the Panelists Wendy Via (she/her) Global Project Against Hate and Extremism President and Co-Founder Wendy's Bio Wendy Via is an expert in achieving social justice change and influencing narratives and actions around some of the most pressing civil and human rights issues of our time, including the effects of extremism on our society, systemic racism, economic inequality, immigration, criminal justice reform, and LGBTQ rights. For the last two decades, she has successfully directed impact philanthropy initiatives, exposed hate and extremism in institutional systems, designed influential policy and advocacy campaigns, leveraged research, and highlighted storytelling to educate the public and create lasting change. Prior to co-founding GPAHE, Wendy was the Chief Communications and Development Officer at the Southern Poverty Law Center, where she led numerous teams. She also helped launch Justice for Migrant Women, dedicated to ensuring that migrant women can live and work with dignity and free from violence, and worked with Jeremiah Program, dedicated to disrupting generational poverty for single moms and their children. She holds a BA in Humanities from Auburn University, Montgomery. Heidi Beirich, PhD (she/her) Global Project Against Hate and Extremism Chief Strategy Officer and Co-Founder Heidi's Bio Heidi Beirich is an expert on American and European extremist movements, including white supremacy, nativism, antisemitism and antigovernment movements. She earned a doctorate in political science from Purdue University in 1998 that specialized in European fascism and far-right movements. She holds M.A. degrees in political science and economics. She is author of numerous academic publications on extremism and co-edited  Neo-Confederacy: A Critical Introduction , published by the University of Texas Press in 2008. Beirich is an oft-sought speaker at conferences devoted to battling hate and extremism. She has been interviewed by hundreds of publications including the  New York Times ,  Washington Post ,  Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, The Guardian, BBC , and others. She has appeared repeatedly on major television networks and in documentaries and radio programs exploring extremism. She has testified in Congress on issues related to white supremacy. Before co-founding the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism, Beirich led the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Intelligence Project, the premier organization tracking hate and antigovernment movements in the United States.  Francisco O. Buchting, PhD (he/him) Horizons Foundation VP of Grants, Programs, and Communications Moderator Francisco's Bio As Vice President of Grants, Programs, and Communications at Horizons Foundation, Francisco Buchting oversees all of the foundation’s grantmaking, programmatic strategies, and communication activities. He also spearheads the Global Faith and Equality Fund – a 17 years spend down initiative funding at the intersection of Faith, LGBTI rights, and Reproductive Justice. Francisco brings to Horizons a background as a research scientist, a public health professional, and an experienced grantmaker. His 25 plus years of experience in government, philanthropy, and nonprofit organizations include forming private-public partnerships, leading knowledge brokerage initiatives, and problem-solving through a mix of creative yet simple solutions with clear implementation and success metrics. Francisco’s career includes a bilingual clinical practice in behavioral medicine with a special focus on chronic diseases, co-authored a bimonthly newspaper column, written numerous research articles, and produced research reports. He has also served on numerous community-based organization boards and museum advisories. Francisco, holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in clinical psychology from Boston University, along with bachelor’s degrees in philosophy and psychology from the University of California, Davis. Horizons’ assets include the LGBTQ Community Endowment Fund, our 150+ donor-advised funds, and various other assets. Over time, Horizons’ assets have grown significantly in recent years. Grantmaking Our purpose in increasing assets is to fund programs and grants to nonprofits that advocate for and serve LGBTQ people. The exact amount of grantmaking by Horizons Foundation in any given year varies because grant funds are both generated by and granted out through multiple vehicles. As the LGBTQ Community Endowment Fund and other assets continue to grow, our level of grantmaking will increase proportionately. Expenditures Horizons carefully stewards our resources and works to maximize the amount that directly supports the LGBTQ community, while still investing sufficiently in the foundation to ensure our continued strength and future growth. Diversity, Inclusion, Equity and Belonging at Horizons At Horizons, we feel the racism and division that continue to poison our world, including within our beloved LGBTQ community.  While Horizons has fought against homophobia, transphobia, racism, sexism, and gender inequality in our over 40 years, we have not focused as consistently on racial justice as our values and mission demand. As an organization of, by, and for all LGBTQ people, we need to do more to hear and heal the pain racism has caused, to reckon with and redress our own role in its perpetuation, and help to detoxify our community for good.  We must kindle hope for a future in which all people are celebrated for who we are, and work tirelessly to bring that flame to life. LGBTQ liberation cannot be unwound from the liberation of all oppressed people. The struggle for racial, economic, gender, and social justice needs to be a shared struggle as humans. Building upon our four decades of experience, partnerships, and deeply held values, our new strategic plan sets out ambitious goals and actions that will dramatically advance our vision in the years ahead. COVID-19 grantee partner The Oakland LGBTQ Community Center, ready to provide food and supplies to their community. The COVID-19 pandemic took hold in the Bay Area just two weeks after Horizons adopted this strategic plan. Once the pandemic hit, the foundation leapt into responding to this massive crisis. It has made painfully clear how profoundly vulnerable many LGBTQ people remain, notwithstanding all of our movement's epic progress. And Horizons has been clear throughout this crisis that the vision put forth in this new strategic plan stands now as even more critical than it was adopted — critical for hundreds of thousands of LGBTQ people today, and for millions in LGBTQ generations to come. We plan to double our annual community grantmaking with sharpened priorities. We will maintain an “Open Door” policy in our community grantmaking, intentionally offering a wide range of LGBTQ nonprofits opportunities to seek funding. Horizons has long prioritized those within our community that have especially great, often disproportionate needs, and the strategic plans calls for sharpening still further our community grantmaking priorities around six populations: Transgender people lgbtq People of color Bisexual people lgbtq youth lgbtq elders lgbtq refugees and asylees We will develop a major community-informed, multi-year grant initiative focused on transgender people of color. This initiative will provide targeted support to transgender people of color, who are among the highest-need members of the LGBTQ community. In keeping with Horizons’ long-held values, the initiative will be developed via a participatory grantmaking process, in which community experts and partners deeply inform the initiative.  We plan to identity an unprecedented total of $250 million in future legacy gifts for the LGBTQ community. Horizons will build on the landmark success of the Now and Forever Campaign in order to serve donors and bring dramatically greater resources to the LGBTQ community by capitalizing on our extraordinary collective opportunity in legacy giving. We plan to amplify our longstanding commitment to equity, inclusion, diversity, and belonging in every aspect of the foundation. We believe that our community and the foundation itself must manifest and practice diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in every aspect of our work and in our culture. We believe that we cannot do our work ethically, nor can we be effective in our mission, without being relentlessly serious about DEIB. We will strategically deepen the foundation’s leadership in the LGBTQ movement at the local, state, national, and global levels. As we move into our fifth decade, we strongly reaffirm Horizons’ role as a leader on multiple issues and on multiple levels – the San Francisco Bay Area, the state of California, the nation, and the world. Explore the Directory Give OUT Day Horizons was proud to host Give OUT Day, the only national day of giving for the LGBTQ community, for nine years. In 2025, Give OUT Day found a new home at GiveMN. Since 2013, Give OUT Day has enabled hundreds of LGBTQ nonprofits across all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico to raise millions of dollars. Horizons’ flagship grantmaking program, Community Issues provides support to LGBTQ nonprofit organizations and programs based in our local community: the nine counties of the San Francisco Bay Area. Central to our mission, supporting these organizations’ programs, services, and advocacy helps advance a world where all LGBTQ people live freely and fully. This year, Horizons expects to award substantially more funding than ever through Community Issues. We are committing these additional resources to respond to two critical and interconnected realities: the sharp decreases in funding from federal, state, county, and city sources, and the growing strain on LGBTQ organizations and programs caused by the current presidential administration and escalating anti-LGBTQ sentiment nationwide. In light of these profound challenges, Horizons will provide more stable, sustained, multi-year support to help LGBTQ organizations continue their essential work in increasingly difficult conditions. As we have since our founding, Horizons remains committed to ensuring that these grants deepen investment in historically under-resourced parts of the LGBTQ community, particularly those most impacted by the current anti-LGBTQ political climate and persistent inequalities. Through Community Issues, Horizons utilizes a systems-based grantmaking model that reflects our commitment to sustainability, equity, and responsive support for the SF Bay Area LGBTQ nonprofit ecosystem and the LGBTQ community it serves. We continue to focus on trust-based philanthropy and multi-year funding.  Horizons Foundation Grantees at our 2025 LGBTQ Grantee Partner Celebration We know that the LGBTQ community’s needs and opportunities constantly evolve, and it is essential to examine our grantmaking approach and priorities. Horizons 2018 LGBTQ Community Needs Assessment underscored the continuing significant challenges and often disproportionate needs the LGBTQ community faces in the SF Bay Area. To help target our funding and achieve greater impact for the LGBTQ community, Horizons Foundation has updated our grantmaking strategy. Horizons seeks to strengthen our Community Issues grantmaking emphasizing the centrality of supporting organizations that are based in our community and led by LGBTQ people. We proudly reaffirm our commitment as a community foundation to an “Open Door” policy in our community grantmaking, intentionally offering a wide range of LGBTQ nonprofits opportunities to seek funding. About Community Issues Grants Open door policy Community Issues  is open to all non profit s   and  fiscally sponsored programs that meet eligibility criteria and whose work falls within these overall funding areas:  Advocacy Arts Community Building Health and Wellness Geographic Focus Request support for an LGBTQ organization or program/project based within one or more of these SF Bay Area counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma. General Operating Support Horizons favors general operating support grants for LGBTQ-primary organizations because we know that this is the funding our organizations need most.   GRANT SIZE AND DURATION Award Size: The Foundation plans to increase the maximum grant amount once again—marking the third consecutive year of growth. For 2025, we expect the average grant size to range between $25,000 and $30,000. This is an average and not a fixed amount; actual grant sizes will vary based on the number of applications we receive, available resources, community needs, and other factors. We will also aim to make larger individual grants where possible. Multi-Year Grants: We anticipate awarding a greater number of multi-year grants in 2025. Last year, 45% of all grants funded were multi-year, and we expect that proportion to grow in the upcoming cycle. Key Updates to the 2025 Community Issues Program Lift the $1 Million annual budget cap eligibility For 2025, the Community Issues program will accept applications from LGBTQ-primary organizations of any organizational budget size. This change will maintain alignment with the LGBTQ-primary definition while expanding access to organizations with a range of capacities and infrastructure. LGBTQ-primary organizations are defined as organizations: whose missions include the LGBTQ population as the primary focus of the work; whose staff and boards predominantly reflect the LGBTQ community (65% or more); and which primarily serve LGBTQ people (65% or more). Horizons will continue to accept applications from LGBTQ-focused programs that have annual program budgets of $1 million or less from non-LGBTQ-primary organizations. The applicant must demonstrate that the program serves a specific area in the nine-county SF Bay Area where LGBTQ-primary organizations do not provide sufficient, comparable services or reach a specific LGBTQ population. Broaden Funding Priorities The Community Issued program has expanded its priorities beyond the current focus on specific populations and organization types. This shift enables Community Issues funding to support a more ecosystem-wide strategy that encompasses a broader and more integrated range of LGBTQ organizations across four interconnected areas: Arts, Health and Wellness, Community Building, and Advocacy. Fiscal sponsors are exempt. Learn More George Choy Memorial Scholarship Supported by the Gay Asian Pacific Alliance since 1997, this scholarship supports SF Bay Area LGBTQ Asian and Pacific Islander students. It is named in honor of activist George Choy, who was a leader in the Asian and Pacific Islander LGBTQ movement. Learn More Markowski-Leach Scholarship Established by a bequest from the estates of Jim Leach and Tom Markowski in 1991, this scholarship supports LGBTQ students at select SF Bay Area universities. Awards are granted to students who demonstrate promise for becoming positive role models for other LGBTQ people. This fund has granted in excess of half a million in scholarships. Learn More We Rise LGBTQ Scholarship The We Rise LGBTQ Scholarship is born of the notion that helping out an individual lifts our entire community and is funded by the Grass Roots Gay Rights Foundation (GRGRF). The We Rise LGBTQ Scholarship awards one-time gifts annually to selected applicants in the San Francisco Bay Area who can share their stories of where they have been, and more importantly, where they aim to go. Meet Our Grantee Partners Though we have made great strides, our 2018 LGBTQ Community Needs Assessment makes clear that LGBTQ people in the SF Bay Area still have widespread unmet needs. To meet the needs of our diverse community, our flagship funding program, Community Issues , supports LGBTQ organizations in all nine counties of the SF Bay Area across broad funding areas. Horizons' grants support organizations across the country and globe. Our over 150 donor-advised funds make grants to wide-ranging nonprofits across the U.S., and our Global Faith and Equality Fund works to stem the exportation of religious-based homophobia from the United States to Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.  Beyond grantmaking, Horizons invests in LGBTQ organizations by organizing Give OUT Day , the only national day of giving for the LGBTQ community, which has enabled hundreds of LGBTQ nonprofits across all 50 states, D.C., and Puerto Rico to raise millions of dollars. Recognizing that bequests hold the highest philanthropic potential for our community, Horizons identified over $100 million in future legacy gifts through our groundbreaking Now and Forever Campaign, and we continue to identify these gifts today. Many of these gifts support our LGBTQ Community Endowment Fund , a source of permanent resources for our community. Horizons seeks to support LGBTQ donor engagement opportunities of large LGBTQ-primary organizations (annual budget over $1 million) based within the nine counties of the San Francisco Bay Area.  With a maximum award of $5,000, the LGBTQ Donor Engagement Program exists to support annual fundraising events (e.g., gala), but if an organization does not have an annual fundraising event, it may be eligible for efforts that engage donors through alternative events (e.g., house parties, annual donor thank-you events, etc.).   Spring LGBTQ Donor Engagement Program applications open in January   for events taking place from   January through June . Fall LGBTQ Donor Engagement Program applications are open in May  for events taking place from   July through December . The LGBTQ Donor Engagement Program is open to large LGBTQ-primary organizations (annual budgets over $1 million) based within the nine counties of the San Francisco Bay Area. Selective Criteria and Review Process Horizons supports events that: Offer inspiring, engaging programming for and about the LGBTQ community   Incorporate strategies to build new relationships and increase giving, especially from individuals   Have clear goals for what a successful event looks like and a plan for measuring success   Are inclusive of people across the breadth of the LGBTQ community Are aligned to  Horizons Foundation’s mission   Staff from Horizons Foundation will review proposals and make final funding decisions. This is a competitive application process.  Eligibility LGBTQ Donor Engagement Program grantee partners are limited to one approved request per calendar year per organization.  Please note that LGBTQ Donor Engagement award funds may not be used retroactively, and the event must take place after the date the award is made.   To be eligible for an LGBTQ Donor Engagement Program award, an organization must:   Be a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization, or provide documentation that the organization is fiscally sponsored by an organization that has 501(c)(3) status. Have its home office based in the nine counties of the San Francisco Bay Area. (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, Sonoma) Be hosting an LGBTQ donor engagement event within one or more of nine counties of the San Francisco Bay Area. (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, Sonoma)   Be either an LGBTQ-primary organization with an annual budget over $1 million (LGBTQ-primary is defined as an organization whose mission includes the LGBTQ population as the primary focus of the work; whose staff and board predominantly reflect the LGBTQ community; and which primarily serves LGBTQ people) OR an LGBTQ-primary organization with a budget under $1 million that is celebrating a special anniversary year (e.g. 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, etc.). He also spearheads the Global Faith and Equality Fund – a 17 years spend down initiative funding at the intersection of Faith, LGBTI rights, and Reproductive Justice. Francisco brings to Horizons a background as a research scientist, a public health professional, and an experienced grantmaker. His 25 plus years of experience in government, philanthropy, and nonprofit organizations include forming private-public partnerships, leading knowledge brokerage initiatives, and problem-solving through a mix of creative yet simple solutions with clear implementation and success metrics. Francisco’s career includes a bilingual clinical practice in behavioral medicine with a special focus on chronic diseases, co-authored a bimonthly newspaper column, written numerous research articles, and produced research reports. He has also served on numerous community-based organization boards and museum advisories. read more JOSHUA DELFIN (he/him) Senior Program Officer Joshua has been in the nonprofit sector for over 15 years and comes to Horizons Foundation with a depth of experience with diverse and intersectional social justice initiatives. Prior to joining Horizons Foundation, Joshua was a Program Officer at Common Counsel Foundation, where he focused on funding grassroots organizations and frontline communities, including workers’ rights and environmental justice organizations. He managed Native Voices Rising, a participatory grantmaking partnership between Native Americans in Philanthropy and Common Counsel Foundation. Joshua has held positions at the National Center for Lesbian Rights, Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and the Greenlining Institute. He has completed leadership development programs that include Justice Funders’ Harmony Initiative, the Hispanics in Philanthropy Líderes program, and the San Francisco Foundation Multicultural Program. At SFF, he focused on early childhood education, full-service community schools, and the LGBTQ fund. Joshua holds a BA in Sociology and Women’s Studies and an MA in Equity and Social Justice in Education. read more ROGER DOUGHTY (he/him) President Roger has been an activist and leader in the LGBT movement for more than 40 years, and he has led Horizons Foundation since 2002. Prior to joining the foundation, he served as the Executive Director of Horizons Community Services in Chicago, the Midwest’s largest LGBT social service and advocacy organization. During Roger’s tenure at Horizons, the foundation has dramatically increased its grantmaking, capacity, and overall asset base. He oversaw creation of the LGBT Community Endowment Fund for the community’s future; helped bring millions of dollars in funds from mainstream foundations to our community, and has been a national and local leader in multi-year efforts to increase philanthropic giving to LGBTQ causes. In Chicago, Roger led that organization’s expansion into the Chicago LGBT Community Center, known as the Center on Halsted. Before moving to Chicago, he was the Director of Programs for the Los Angeles LGBT Center, where he oversaw the Center’s 40-plus programs and services. Roger’s San Francisco background includes his tenure in the law firm of Heller Ehrman, where he specialized in refugee, immigration, and asylum cases involving people fleeing from gender and sexual orientation-related discrimination. Roger also has served as president of the Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance in Washington, D.C., and was Associate Director of the Coro Foundation. He serves on the boards of Northern California Grantmakers and as Board Chair of OutRight Action International, the world’s leading LGBTIQ human rights organization. Roger holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Williams College, a master’s degree from the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley, and a J.D. from the UC Berkeley School of Law. read more SOFIA FIGUEROA (She/Her) Communications Specialist Having worked with non-profits and LGBTQ organizations in the California Central Valley, Sofia hopes to bring her passion for the community and her expertise in design to Horizons Foundation. Formerly, Sofia has served as President of Lambda Alliance at UC Merced, a student-led queer organization focused on education, inclusion, and the uplifting of QTPOC voices both on-campus and in Merced County. Sofia is a University of California, Merced alumna with a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science and Engineering. Outside of work, she can be found creating artwork, thrifting for pins and vinyl records, playing the piano, or otherwise developing personal projects alongside her friends. read more Amie Haiz (She/Her) Chief Financial Officer Amie is the Chief Financial Officer at Horizons Foundation. With over two decades of experience in nonprofit finance and operational leadership, Amie has a history of prudent financial management and has been instrumental in organizational growth. Prior to joining Horizons, Amie served in several finance and operations leadership roles in San Francisco nonprofits, including Pacific Primary, Mission Bay Alliance, and the Non-Profit Housing Association of Northern California. Amie has also dedicated time serving on local boards, such as CFO of Daly City Public Library Associates, Treasurer of Pacific Primary, and as a Board Member and Financial Aid Committee member at Synergy School. With a longstanding commitment to social justice, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, Amie is dedicated to supporting the LGBTQ+ community and committed to the long-term financial success of Horizons Foundation. read more Jeremy Rye (He/him) Chief Philanthropy Officer Jeremy has worked in the social justice sector for over 20 years in varying capacities, including 14 years as a fundraiser at leading civil and human rights nonprofits where he’s secured funds to support cutting-edge litigation and advocacy, as a grantmaker at prominent social justice philanthropies working on special projects and building new grantmaking initiatives, and in tech to scale nascent social impact programs. His career has spanned issue areas such as racial justice, civil rights, immigrant rights, criminal justice reform, gender justice, LGBTQ+ justice, A.I., international human rights, national security, disaster relief, and climate justice. Jeremy graduated from UC Davis with a BA in Sociology and minors in Asian American Studies and Community & Regional Development. Our support is intentionally broad, because the needs of our community are so many and run so deep. At the same time, our venture philanthropy approach looks favorably toward innovative, grassroots solutions to our community's emerging needs, especially those of the most under-resourced segments of our community. Meet Our Grantee Partners Though we have made great strides, our 2018 LGBTQ Community Needs Assessment makes clear that LGBTQ people in the SF Bay Area still have widespread unmet needs. To meet the needs of our diverse community, our flagship funding program, Community Issues , supports LGBTQ organizations in all nine counties of the SF Bay Area across broad funding areas. Horizons' grants support organizations across the country and globe. Our over 150 donor-advised funds make grants to wide-ranging nonprofits across the U.S., and our Global Faith and Equality Fund works to stem the exportation of religious-based homophobia from the United States to Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.  Beyond grantmaking, Horizons invests in LGBTQ organizations by organizing Give OUT Day , the only national day of giving for the LGBTQ community, which has enabled hundreds of LGBTQ nonprofits across all 50 states, D.C., and Puerto Rico to raise millions of dollars. The Professional Advisors Circle holds networking events and organizes LGBTQ Financial Planning Day , where LGBTQ people receive pro bono advice to increase their financial well-being and capacity to give. LEGACY GIVING AND ENDOWMENT The future we envision — where all LGBTQ people live freely and fully — is only possible if we have a strategy for the long term. That’s why we promote legacy giving . Recognizing that bequests hold the highest philanthropic potential for our community, Horizons identified over $100 million in future legacy gifts through our groundbreaking Now and Forever Campaign, and we continue to identify these gifts today. Many of these gifts support our LGBTQ Community Endowment Fund , a source of permanent resources for our community. We will be there to meet our community's needs that we can't begin to imagine today — for generations, forever. The power of legacy giving goes far beyond our own foundation. Based on national data on the transfer of wealth, we estimate that $270 billion will be dispersed from the estates of LGBTQ people in the next decade alone. That’s why we have led the work of the National Task Force on LGBTQ Planned Giving, which creates resources for other LGBTQ organizations to realize the potential of legacy giving across the country. Horizons brought the framework and vision for relationship building, and invited LGBTQ organizations to ideate and shape the conversation, ensuring the agenda reflected community needs and opportunities for deeper collaboration across issues and geographies.    Over the afternoon, attendees came together to build stronger networks, share resources and opportunities, and foster a more cohesive LGBTQ community. In small-table conversations and in two rotated table conversations, community leaders engaged candidly in discussions about organizational sustainability, collaboration, and how each organization is meeting this political moment.  The event furthered Horizons’ continued investment in building a stronger Bay Area LGBTQ ecosystem, equipping leaders with the relationships and tools to share information, best practices, and solutions.
