Growing up in Boyle Heights, Ramon had limited opportunities to learn about avenues to higher education. He credits IHADLA with broadening his horizons and providing insights into pathways to college. “The after-school programs in my younger years taught me discipline, and the college field trips sparked my excitement about attending college. My number one goal is to graduate high school. Despite facing many challenges during childhood, I’m proud of how far I’ve come. My long-term dreams include graduating from college as a first-generation student and making my family proud. That is very important to me.” Currently, Ramon is working part-time to help support his family while preparing for graduation and completing college applications. The Program Coordinators of Program 19 have introduced new Saturday academies specifically designed to assist our Dreamer Scholars with every aspect of the college application process, significantly enhancing their chances of acceptance. Ramon is particularly excited about submitting applications to Whittier College and Cal State LA. Ramon emphasizes that this level of support from IHADLA is nothing new. Beyond academics, IHADLA has always profoundly impacted his personal life. He says, “I’ve always dreamed of attending college and making my mother proud. When she passed away, this organization was there for me and helped me keep those dreams alive. Because of their support, I’ve grown incredibly close to the staff and faculty and am close to making my dreams a reality. IHADLA has taken care of me like a second family.” As Ramon prepares to graduate, he feels a bittersweet connection to his fellow Dreamer Scholars, who will each embark on their own paths. However, he is determined to stay connected and hopes to pay it forward one day by becoming a mentor and volunteer at IHADLA for the next generation. As we celebrate Mentor Month, the “I Have A Dream” Foundation—Los Angeles is proud to shine a spotlight on the dedicated mentors who help shape the future of our students. These incredible individuals share their time and expertise and embody the spirit of hope and inspiration. While we wish we could highlight all of our amazing mentors who dedicate their time to supporting our Dreamer Scholars, we wanted to recognize seven mentors who have gone the extra mile to support their mentees! Take a moment to read their bios and see the power of mentorship in action. Peer Mentors Alexis “Lexi” joined our mentorship program driven by her passion for helping kids and creating memorable experiences. Her favorite part? Watching how much the students enjoy interacting with new people. Lexi’s vibrant energy extends beyond mentoring. She enjoys basketball, hanging out with friends, and going on little adventures. Her connection with students brings joy and encouragement, helping them confidently and enthusiastically navigate their middle school journey. Elaine “Lainey” loves working with kids because of their boundless joy and honesty. She enriches their middle school experience through mentoring, fostering creativity, and a sense of community. Lainey’s diverse interests, including involvement in the yearbook, playing in a rock band, and golfing with her school team, make her a relatable and inspiring role model. Her dedication ensures that every student feels supported and seen. Community Mentors For Brian, education has been the cornerstone of his family’s success, and he’s committed to helping his mentee achieve their dreams through learning. His mentorship journey is fueled by the belief that education is the foundation for a brighter future. Outside of mentoring, Brian enjoys playing and watching sports and cherishes quality time with his family. His encouragement helps his middle school mentee discover their potential and strive for excellence. Christian’s mission is to serve the community in restorative and meaningful ways. As a mentor, he provides his middle school mentee with positive examples of how to carry himself, inspiring positive change within themselves and their community. He values every moment with his mentee and appreciates the opportunity to learn from him as well. His passions—writing, reading, motorcycling, sports, travel, and sustainable gardening—serve as sources of inspiration for his mentee. As a teacher, Louisa understands the challenge of reaching every student in a crowded classroom. Through one-on-one mentoring, she builds a personal connection with her middle school mentee that makes a lasting impact. Louisa’s love for reading, tennis, traveling, walking, and yoga mirrors her belief in a balanced and healthy lifestyle. Her commitment to giving back enriches her mentee’s life, instilling confidence and a lifelong love of learning. Marisela’s passion for mentoring stems from her desire to help youth thrive and realize their potential. Her adventurous spirit is reflected in her hobbies, including hiking, running, traveling, and spending time with her dogs. As a high school mentor, Marisela provides guidance and encouragement, helping her mentee set goals and pursue them with determination. Academic Mentor For Elissa, there’s no greater joy than helping students succeed academically. She takes pride in giving her middle school mentee the tools they need to build a strong foundation for their future. Elissa’s love for movies, travel, long beach walks, and volunteering with students highlights her nurturing and giving nature. Her mentorship creates a ripple effect, inspiring her mentee to strive for academic excellence and personal growth. These seven mentors represent the heart and soul of the “I Have A Dream” Foundation—Los Angeles. They’re not just shaping futures; they’re building legacies. This Mentor Month, we celebrate their dedication and invite you to join us in honoring their incredible contributions. Let’s continue to inspire and uplift the next generation together! We promote, from an early age, values of higher education and career success and provide opportunities guaranteed through financial resources, enrichment programs and more. Vision Our vision is for all children to have the opportunity to earn a college degree and to fully capitalize on their talents and aspirations and fulfill their dreams of attaining successful careers and productive global citizenship. History Throughout its 35-year history, the national “I Have A Dream” Foundation has been known for it’s whole-child education approach – a legacy from it’s very first program. New York businessman Eugene Lang founded the national “I Have a Dream” Foundation in 1981 when, prior to giving a speech at his middle school alma mater in Harlem, he was told that 75% of the students in attendance would drop out before graduating from high school. Eugene was so alarmed by this figure that he changed his speech on the spot and offered to pay the college tuition of every student in the room who graduated. Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech, the “I Have A Dream” movement began and eventually expanded to over 60 independently-run nonprofits in cities across the United States, Canada and New Zealand. “I Have a Dream” Foundation – Los Angeles (IHADLA), the second affiliate, was founded in 1987 by the Whittier Family Foundations, which funded the early programs across Los Angeles. For over 30 years, IHADLA has cumulatively impacted over 11,500 individuals from under-resourced communities including Dreamer Scholars and their families. We have also inspired many Dreamer alumni to come back and help their communities. Our mission is to provide our Dreamer Scholars with the academic, socio-emotional and cultural resources to help them develop the skills needed to graduate from high school and to and through a college education. We serve our Dreamer Scholars for 12+ consecutive years from first grade to high school, and then to and through college – helping them effectively navigate an educational pathway to an empowered future. Unique among education charities, IHADLA offers the only academic, socio-emotional and family assistance program that is in school, after school, year-round, and long-term (10-plus years). We currently serve nearly 500 youth across 20 programs from the under-served communities of Boyle Heights, Watts & Inglewood. The relationship should foster an enthusiastic attitude in the Dreamer Scholar towards education and expose them to various positive, new experiences. Mentoring is a life-changing experience for both mentors and mentees. Mentoring is fun, and we guarantee it will change your life. We would love for every single one of our Dreamer Scholars to have an amazing mentor to simply live life with them. That new mentor could be you. Mentor Commitment & Mentorship Types We are dedicated to three types of mentorship: Academic Mentoring, Community Mentoring, and Peer Mentoring. 1. Academic Mentoring: Inspire the Dream matches mentors with Dreamer Scholars to provide tutoring, homework help, and academic enrichment. This mentor type is school-based only, meaning you cannot take your mentee on outings. However, you can communicate with them virtually, by phone, or via email to discuss academic goals, offer homework help, and track academic progress. Time Commitment: Middle School: Two hours per month High School: One hour per month Additional Responsibilities: Attend initial and ongoing training with qualified educators or consultants Adhere to the Volunteer Code of Conduct Provide feedback on your mentoring experience Qualifications: Must be 18+ years old Must be employed, retired, or a student Must pass all IHDF screening requirements Must have established residency for at least 3 months 2. Community Mentoring: Inspire the Dream matches Dreamer Scholars with members of the community to build positive, meaningful relationships. This type of mentor is allowed to take their mentee on outings such as movies, dining out, hiking, etc. Mentors are expected to arrange individual meetings with their mentees. Outing Commitment: Middle School: Two outings per month, each lasting at least 2 hours High School: One outing per month, lasting at least 2 hours Additional Responsibilities: Attend initial and ongoing training Adhere to the Volunteer Code of Conduct Provide feedback on your mentoring experience Qualifications: Must be 21+ years old Must pass all IHDF screening requirements Must have established residency for at least 3 months 3. Peer Mentorship: Peer Mentors help Dreamer Scholars develop trusting relationships with other youth, offering one-on-one or small group social-emotional learning and community engagement activities. Peer mentors are school-based only and cannot take mentees on outings. Virtual peer mentoring is also available. Time Commitment (School-Based): Middle School: Two hours per month High School: One hour per month Virtual Peer Mentoring: Maintain weekly contact with your mentee for 30 minutes virtually Additional Responsibilities: Attend initial and ongoing training on evidence-based mentoring Adhere to the Volunteer Code of Conduct Provide feedback on your mentoring experience Qualifications: Must be under 17 years old (Please note that when you turn 18, you must complete your background check and fingerprints.) Must pass all IHDF screening requirements Apply to be a Peer Mentor today here (For Peer Mentors applying: On the application, when it asks, “What type of mentoring are you interested in?” please select “Academic.” We are currently in the process of updating our online application for peer mentors.) Primary Responsibilities for All Mentor Types: Meet attendance requirements for a minimum of one academic year Participate in initial and ongoing training Adhere to the Volunteer Code of Conduct Provide feedback on your mentoring experience Through consistent one-on-one interactions, our mentors play diverse roles as friends, counselors, teachers, and confidants, thereby amplifying the impact of our program. In addition to these individual connections, IHADLA also facilitates large group outings and virtual events, fostering collective participation for both mentees and mentors alike. Our Objective is to Match Each IHADLA Dreamer Student with a Mentor: Depending on which type of mentorship you feel is best for you, you can join as an individual, with a friend, or with a group from work. As a community mentor, it’s as simple as going to the beach, sharing a dinner, and introducing your mentee to activities they have never experienced before. If you choose to be an academic mentor, you will play a vital role in your mentee’s academic success. As a peer mentor, you can make a meaningful difference for your peers who are closer to your age by supporting them academically and emotionally. A mentor can make a difference just by being there. A mentor can transform the life of a child, and in doing so, transform the world. Mentor Program Goals The three basic goals of IHADLA’s Mentoring Program are: To build personal bonds and trusting relationships. To help Dreamer Scholars graduate from high school and encourage them to pursue a post-secondary education. Expose Dreamer Scholars to new experiences designed to cultivate familiarity and acceptance of diversity: social, cultural, economic, etc. Mentor Eligibility Requirements Willing to adhere to all IHADLA Mentor Program policies and procedures Able to make at least a one-year commitment to the program Willing to communicate with mentee weekly (via phone, email, Zoom, etc.) Willing to complete the screening procedure: online application, background check, mentor trainings and mentee match Willing to communicate on a monthly basis with IHADLA Program Coordinators Clean criminal history, no illicit drug use, and must have never been accused, arrested, charged or convicted of child abuse or molestation Benefits of Mentoring: Research from the National Mentoring Resource Center shows that youth with peer mentors are more likely to have: Improved connection to school Enhanced self-esteem and self-worth Stronger relationships with peers : improved social selt being Consider Applying as a Mentor if: You are passionate about giving back to your community You are already a mentor or have a mentor You understand the importance of social skills You are interested in building your confidence You are a helper!   Mentor Application   Click Here for our blog post with stories about IHADLA Mentoring A few of our inspiring mentors and mentees: Home Our Work Get Involved Student Internship Opportunities Donor Privacy Policy Donor Bill Of Rights 3580 Wilshire Blvd. Suite 720 Los Angeles, CA 90010 T: (213) 572-0175 © “I Have A Dream” Foundation - Los Angeles, 2026
