No. As a courtesy to you and your family dentist, we will always discuss the feasibility of braces or tooth straightening without charging a fee for the initial consultation. At what age do you start seeing patients? As a rule of thumb, we like to evaluate young patients after the 6-year molars erupt and the front permanent teeth just start to appear. This is usually between the ages of 6 and 8. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that all children be seen for the first time by age 7. Why do you evaluate patients so young? The purpose of early evaluation is to inform and observe, more than to start treatment. At this early age, the eventual needs may be identified and discussed. A small percentage of this young group may need some form of intervention. Habits are evaluated, medical issues are discussed and an observation schedule is arranged until the patient is ready to begin treatment. How long will the first visit take? The first visit can last anywhere between 30 minutes and 1 hour depending on how ready the patient is for treatment. We may just do a visual exam and explain the situation or we may suggest one or more X-rays and complete diagnostics including impressions of the teeth with photographs to document the current position. Do you take patients transferring from out of town? Yes we do. We handle a patient transferring into our office from another city just like a new patient. We gather complete diagnostic records to show the current status and propose treatment to complete the work that has been started. Do you have any adult patients? Absolutely. A growing percentage of our patients are adult. New, more cosmetic appliances are making adult treatment much more comfortable and convenient. Learn more here. What is the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist? An orthodontist is a general dentist that has had at least 2 more years of full-time training in orthodontics resulting in a nationally accepted specialty certificate. The orthodontist then limits their practice to straightening teeth and dentofacial orthopedics. Can I make all my appointments in the afternoon after school and late in the day? In order to have early and late appointments available for the majority of patient appointments, some procedures need to be accomplished during the hours of 9 and 3. We will do our best to work with your schedules and accommodate your family needs. Do you see patients for emergencies? Yes, our contact information for an emergency is posted on the website. Whether or not you have insurance or a dental plan, we will structure a convenient payment plan that will allow you to pay for orthodontic services over a period of time that usually coincides with your treatment plan. However, we ask patients to understand that if coverage ceases or changes, the patient is still responsible for the agreed upon fee. Do you take American Express, Master Card and/or Visa? Yes, we accept all major credit cards. Do you have direct debit? Yes, we have arrangements for direct debit, charge card posting, as well as payments over the internet. Do you charge interest? No we do not. Do you give family discounts? We have special programs and fees for multiple patients from the same family. Do I need to be pre-medicated for the dentist. Do I need to take my medicine for the orthodontist? Yes. Do retainers need to be worn after braces? Yes, retainers are worn full-time for about 6 months followed by nighttime wear indefinitely. Why do teeth get crooked after wearing braces or aligners? Teeth move throughout life whether you have worn braces or not. It is part of the natural aging process. This is why retainer wear is recommended indefinitely to maintain your orthodontic results over lifetime. Some adults had orthodontic problems as children but were unable to correct them until now. Others, who had treatment as children, may need further treatment as adults due to relapse or limitations in initial treatment. Soreness | Discomfort Orthodontic treatment is no more uncomfortable for adults than children. Adults undergoing orthodontic treatment report the same level of soreness as children (although adults are more willing to tell us about the soreness). Typically, the teeth are most uncomfortable 12-24 hours after an orthodontic adjustment and will disappear within 3 to 5 days. Modern appliances are smaller and more comfortable to wear. Modern techniques, with the new titanium technology, put less pressure on the teeth to cause discomfort, while moving the teeth more rapidly and efficiently. It also decreases the time required between adjustments to every 8 – 10 weeks. Treatment time, on average, is completed in 15-18 months. How long will treatment take? How much will the treatment cost? What’s Next? If orthodontic treatment is indicated at this time, an appointment for Diagnostic Records is scheduled. If time allows, these diagnostic records can be taken at the initial visit. What are Diagnostic Records? Photographs of your teeth Digital scan of your teeth Panoramic radiograph X-ray These diagnostic records will aid our doctors in determining the best course of treatment. What is the Cost of the Treatment? The cost of treatment depends upon the severity of the patient’s problem. The treatment coordinator will discuss fees and payment options during the initial exam, if treatment is required. We have different payment plans to suit your budget. We work hard to make orthodontics affordable. What is Included? Your investment includes: Orthodontic records including photographs, digital scan, x-ray, study models Treatment with braces or Invisalign including all needed appliances, office visits, and procedures performed in our office. One set of final retainers is provided upon completion of treatment. What is Not Included? Work performed at other dental offices outside our orthodontic practice. Wilson is committed to creating beautiful smiles in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. While he loves to have fun, he also feels it is important to educate patients about their orthodontic treatment, and especially emphasize proper oral hygiene while in braces. He designed the Tooth Token Reward Program to help motivate patients to take great care of their teeth and gums. He wants to ensure that patients are receiving the best care possible while being ‘part of the family’. Dr. Don is passionate about making a difference in people’s lives. Each year we provide Smile Scholarships to children and young adults who are experiencing financial challenges so that they can receive orthodontic treatment at no charge. He attended the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. He received his dental degree with Honors from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in San Francisco. With academic and clinical excellence, he completed his residency and obtained his Master’s degree in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. Dr. Don doesn’t just look at the teeth, he also looks at the face and profile, making decisions on what will be best for lip support and overall symmetry. In August of 2003, he moved to Marin to create a unique orthodontic practice that prides itself on quality care in a personable environment. Dr. Don provides orthodontic treatment for children and adults, utilizing technologies such as Invisalign® and Self-ligating Damon System® Braces. He follows the guidelines of the American Association of Orthodontists and wants to see children at age 7 for an initial complimentary consultation. He studied Molecular & Cell Biology at UC Berkeley, where he met his wife Marrisa in organic chemistry class, proof that love can bloom in the most surprising places! After graduating, he pursued his calling as a Youth Pastor, dedicating himself to impacting young lives in Newark, California. Dr. Kim’s journey to orthodontics was fueled by his passion for making a difference. After graduating from UCSF Dental School, he began his career as a general dentist in Marin County. There, he served underserved communities, witnessing firsthand how a confident smile could transform lives. This experience not only deepened his commitment to oral healthcare but also inspired his pursuit of orthodontics. As his excitement for dentistry grew, Dr. Kim expanded into education, sharing his knowledge as a clinical instructor at UCSF and mentoring future dental professionals. Driven to excel, he pursued advanced training in orthodontics at the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. Small and discreet brackets, so they’re less noticeable and more comfortable. Plus, Damon braces are also available in clear brackets. That’s why he created Tooth Tokens. Tooth Tokens are colorful metal coins that are fun to collect, and they’re not just for kids! Adults can collect them, too. At each visit, you or your child can earn multiple Tooth Tokens. We’ll provide a fun Token Bank for you to keep them in. Patients must have good oral hygiene to participate in the Tooth Token Reward Program. Braces won’t cause cavities, but they can make it a bit more challenging to brush and floss. With Tooth Tokens, we reward our patients for doing their best to keep their teeth and gums clean and healthy. We reward our patients for brushing and flossing, as well as the special things they do for others, and for their educational accomplishments. Afterwards, they had two years of post-doctoral, advanced specialty training to obtain their MSD (Master of Science in Dentistry) in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. In this advanced training, Dr. Don and Dr. Kim learned: To treat crooked teeth by using braces and appliances of different types About the growth of jaws and teeth How to prevent or intercept abnormalities of the bite But training for Dr. Don and Dr. Kim doesn’t stop there. The field of orthodontics is advancing and changing rapidly due to the use of computers and digital technology and the introduction of space-age materials, such as heat-activated memory wires. Dr. Don, Dr. Kim and their team stay certified and educated on new technologies and techniques through continuing education classes.
