The Ohlone people have never ceded, lost, or forgotten their responsibilities as caretakers of this land, as well as all the people who reside in their traditional territory.    We hold two things in our hearts and in our minds. First, there is a long and unfortunate history of colonialism, exclusion, environmental piracy, and prejudice that has impacted who and how we live on the land today. Second, today we live, work, learn, and play on the lands of people with a long history of advocacy, community, resistance, and sustainability. We embrace and honor both their spirit and their wisdom.    Our Location & Facilities Conveniently located off the 101, our home at the Cubberly Center in Palo Alto offers a host of amenities. With two full size gymnasiums, an indoor pavilion, a theatre, multiple sports fields, tennis courts, and green spaces, we have all the advantages of a large school. In addition to the facilities, there are dance studios, martial arts centers, makerspaces , and art studios at the Cubberly Center. We are also a short walk away from  Mitchell Park Community Center.   With a commitment to outdoor education and sustainability, our learning experiences frequently take place off campus. Our location is ideal for exploring the Baylands, local farms and gardens, the mountains, and even local beaches. Diversity & Inclusion As a diverse and inclusive community, we firmly believe that our differences make us stronger and that we are better together.  Our commitment to inclusion creates an environment where children and adults alike are free to be their authentic selves. Our location allows us greater access to engage with the broader community, which in turn helps us cultivate the empathy and drive to work toward equity. We believe that in order for children to fully engage in their communities, they must possess strong local, cultural and global competence. To that end, we learn from and enrich ourselves with multiple perspectives and welcome people of any country of origin, culture, disability, ethnicity, gender expression, gender identity, physical appearance, race, religious choice, family structure, sex, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status. The Elementary Program "This is our son's 3rd year at ILS and we couldn't be happier with our experience and the growth our son has undergone both academically and socially. We noticed that our son is developing a bigger sense of responsibility and ownership towards his assignments and projects as well as his behavior. We see him being empowered and believing in himself, being happy every single day at the idea of going to school and not wanting to leave it as the day finishes."                                                                                                                                           - ILS Parent The focus on fostering the social and emotional lives of children continues in the elementary years with an emphasis on community. Children explore connections with their peers, learn to solve problems together, and deepen their understanding of themselves.    The child-centered instruction seen in the foundational years  expands in the elementary years to include more discrete skills and concepts through an authentic and integrated approach to core content areas.  Direct learning experiences are supplemented by other sources of knowledge as students learn to gather information from books, museums, pictures, documents, interviews, and internet searches. At the core of the our progressive curriculum from the elementary through the middle years are the United Nation's Sustainability Goals. Like the ILS mission, these goals reflect an unwavering commitment to equity, social justice, and sustainability. Under the guidance and support of their learning guides, students make powerful connections between events from distant places and times and their own experiences. Projects draw on and build each child’s developing skills as a mathematician, reader, writer, scientist, and creator. WHAT WHY HOW Why THE WHY Our world is in a constant state of flux. Advances in technology, global markets, and environmental pressures present us with an unpredictable future.  It is more clear than ever that education is no longer simply about the accumulation of facts.   In order to find happiness and to be successful in the future, our children will need to be more adaptable, more resilient, and more resourceful. They will need to think critically, be creative, communicate effectively, and collaborate with others.   In short, our children will need to be life-long learners.       Our program is designed to support and develop the mindset, skillset, and toolset each child needs to be their best selves so that they may engage meaningfully and purposefully with the world around them.  Mindset Curiosity & openness Flexibility & adaptability Self-regulation Creativity Persistence Initiative & risk-taking Long-term thinking Skillset Listen actively Communicate effectively Think critically Use evidence & assess information Analyze local & global issues Reason logically & interpret clearly Become & remain digitally literate Speak at least one language beyond one’s native tongue Toolset Empathy Collaboration & cooperation Conflict resolution & decision-making Trust Leadership & responsibility Assertive communication Social influence THE WHAT Teaching, learning, and leading is anchored in and designed around the following:   A world-class, global education program A competency-based approach to teaching and learning A problem-based and project-based approach to curriculum based on the UN's Sustainable Development Goals A commitment and dedication to outdoor education, the arts, and world languages A dedicated lab school with a focus on pedagogy, innovation, and partnerships A culture and community that meaningfully engages all stakeholders in individual and collective growth A deliberate and purposeful connection to the broader community, both locally and globally   Global Competency Problem-Based Learning Real-World Connections Social & Emotional Development How THE HOW Learning requires a multi-modal approach that addresses all aspects of the whole child including social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development. While the core school day allows time for both explicit skill development and opportunities to apply learning through engaging projects, social and emotional development is the thread that runs throughout each community experience.   In practice, this involves whole class, small group, and independent learning experiences that match learning goals with learner needs. This also involves a blended approach to knowledge, habit, and skill development using a flexible combination of interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and multidisciplinary learning experiences.   We achieve our learning goals through the purposeful and deliberate integration of: Social and emotional development Constructivism, e xperiential learning, and design-thinking Inquiry and reflection Multi-age classes, flexible groupings, and personalization Problem- and project-based learning Mindfulness  Neuroscience and developmental science     What Globally connected Real-world focused Personalized and Innovative Engagement- based A SAMPLE SCHEDULE The weekly schedule is a fluid and flexible structure that supports knowledge and skill development, as well as vigorous opportunities to apply both in context. The schedule is not a fixed structure to be followed, but rather a template that student and adult learners work from to create deep and purposeful learning experiences.   The school day begins with rolling  drop-off  between 8:00-8: 45AM and Extended Day until 6:00PM.   Along with workshop time (reading, writing, and math), our learning experiences include: Weekly arts classes Hands-on activities Problem-based and project-based learning Mandarin Refresh time in between each learning block A dedicated one hour block for  outdoor time each day for structured and unstructured play   Below are two sample  schedules, one for our  Lower Elementary and one for our Upper Elementary.      Join our mailing list Subscribe Now HOME ABOUT US Careers at ILS OUR PROGRAM Early Childhood Elementary Years Middle Years Summer Camps ADMISSION SUPPORT ILS CONTACT US More Use tab to navigate through the menu items. Welcome to Early Childhood at ILS! "ILS is all about cooperation and partnership, unlike the feeling we got from traditional schools where a teacher is an authority distanced from their students. We see that even though our son is very young, his voice is heard and he is respected and he is taught how to respect others in return."                                                                                                                               - ILS Parent We rely on a deep knowledge of child development to build hands-on learning experiences for c hildren and a strong classroom community grounded in positive, trusting relationships. The ILS early childhood program (TK-first grade) encourages children to learn through experiences as they begin their journey in elementary school. Our child-centered curriculum introduces concepts in mathematics, literacy, and STEAM while focusing on core themes like community and culture. We draw inspiration from the Reggio Emilia, Waldorf, and Montessori approaches as we incorporate contemporary research about childhood development and learning into our practice.   Social and emotional development is the foundation of our program. Children are encouraged to think about concepts like equity, social justice, and sustainability through their interactions with one another. They are encouraged to find and exercise their unique voices in authentic and meaningful ways. An appreciation of diverse cultures and identities is woven into everyday learning through music, stories, creative play, and class discussions.   Our curriculum encourages children to ask why, to form connections, and to pursue their interests. We embrace each child’s unique way of thinking and recognize that children learn by both exploring and observing their environments. Instruction is tailored to individual interests and abilities, so children start their academic journey with confidence. Join our mailing list Subscribe Now HOME ABOUT US Careers at ILS OUR PROGRAM Early Childhood Elementary Years Middle Years Summer Camps ADMISSION SUPPORT ILS CONTACT US More Use tab to navigate through the menu items. Welcome to the Middle Years! "We wanted a school that reflected our values of high expectations while being supportive and loving. We have always valued diversity, and as a graduate level educator myself, I have a strong appreciation for pedagogy and the value of innovation in education. We have always appreciated the strong partnership with the entire team. They build curious, resilient, and motivated lifelong learners. The learning guides are there to help our children grow, discover, and feel. We appreciate the emphasis on social-emotional learning (SEL)--a buzzword many schools use these days but don't always employ. We have always valued the efforts to build community through partnerships with local sources of enrichment including art, agriculture, robotics, chess, and financial empowerment."                                                                                                                       - Parent of an ILS Graduate " Society pulls children out of a safe, comfortable environment – elementary school – and throws them into a separate facility at the time when they most need to remain in protective, familiar surroundings. "   Janna Juvovne, author of “Focus on the Wonder Years: Challenges Facing the American Middle School The middle years program at ILS includes fifth through eighth grade. Our multi-age approach is specifically designed to nurture and guide students on their journey to becoming responsible, thoughtful, and actively engaged adults.   Our middle school team understands the challenges, unique needs, and wonders of pre-adolescent and adolescent development.  They are a passionate and dedicated group who love working with these fast-paced, dynamic age groups.   The focus for grades 5-6 involves putting students at the center of their learning to support a happy transition from childhood to adolescence. Classes are taught in small group formats that encourage collaboration and active problem-solving. They have a dynamic schedule that includes classes from multiple disciplines, time for peer and independent work, and opportunities to learn from their mistakes.   This continues in grades 7-8 as we extend the skills, concepts, and learning styles developed in previous grades to prepare students for the challenges and opportunities in high school and beyond.  The result is a community of enthusiastic learners who are comfortable in their own skin, understand their strengths and challenges, are well-prepared both academically and intellectually, are able to advocate for themselves and others, and are able to take meaningful action in their lives and their communities.   Preparation for the high school application process begins in seventh grade. Read about them here: Dr. Tamar Posner Head of School, Mathematics Guide Tamar is a mathematician and educator who is passionate about sharing the joy and wonder of mathematics with young people and has led numerous camps over the years. Tamar taught students and teachers around the world, including in the United States, Israel, India, Indonesia, and Japan, in both public and independent school settings. She studied mathematics at Hebrew University, and received her Masters and PhD at UC Berkeley. Cristian Arriaga Physical Education Guide & Afterschool Director Cristian is the school’s physical education guide and afterschool director, known for his energy and warmth. With years of experience teaching, and multiple summers leading camps, he believes that fun and learning go hand in hand, especially on the field or court! Cristian is passionate about helping campers learn about themselves, build independence, and grow as teammates (and friends) through movement and play. Anna Finlay TK-8 Art Integration & STEAM Innovation Anna is passionate about all things patterns, art, math, and computer science. She has worked in STEM summer camps for the past four years, and got her BS in Computer Science from the University of Oregon. She loves video games, card games, and probability. She supports ILS classrooms with math, coding, and also art. Anna greatly enjoys drawing, animating, and (fun fact) even worked for one summer as a caricature artist! Sharon Wu Foundational Elementary Guide Sharon is our lead TK–1 teacher with many years of experience supporting young learners in their foundational years. She  is passionate about project-based learning that sparks curiosity, creativity, and confidence. Sharon brings deep care, structure, and joy to her classroom, helping children build strong roots as learners and community members. She also loves rock climbing and the outdoors! Frequently Asked Questions General What if my child has allergies? Please indicate that your child has allergies on the registration form. The camp is a nut free space, and lunches provided through the Taste Nutrition program do not contain nuts or common allergens. If your child requires an epi-pen, they can hand it off to the director on site, who has CPR, AED, First Aid, and epinephrine training. It can either be brought home daily, or returned on Friday to the family. There is also a no food sharing policy. What do you do in aftercare? After care will be a time for playing games, socializing, and relaxing. It will not be an instructional period, so that all campers can keep pace with each other, but rather will be open choice time. Campers may choose to play from a selection of board games, card games, may choose to draw, or play unstructured games with each other. It is rolling pick up, meaning that any time between 3:30 and 6:00pm is okay to pick up your child! After care is an add-on to camp sessions, meaning that it is not automatically included in registration fees. What should we pack? Campers should bring lunch (if an ordered lunch hasn’t been arranged,) sunscreen, a water bottle, and closed-toe sneakers. Clothing should be something they can run around in. Is there a lunch program? Yes! While many kids bring food from home, we also offer the option to order lunches for your camper. Imagination Lab School uses the Taste Nutrition program during the school year, and it will continue throughout the summer.
