You can allocate a specific amount or leave a percentage of your estate. Gifts of Retirement Plan Assets Because retirement assets are typically heavily taxed when left to family, it can be effective to designate a portion or the balance of retirement assets to a charity. Most people do not use all of their retirement assets during their lifetime and most plans allow you to easily designate or change a beneficiary with a simple form. If you are aged 70 ½ or older, you may donate up to $100,000 in a given year directly from your IRA to the JCC East Bay. The distribution will be tax-free and will count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD). Sleep, in this context, is often treated as a disruption: something to minimize in the name of productivity so that we can “get more done.” This talk turns to Hebrew literature to propose a different way of thinking about sleep: as a mode of thought and relation, a vital way of engaging with the world. Drawing on psychoanalytic theory, especially the work of Wilfred Bion, we will read scenes of sleep in works by the Hebrew writers Amalia Kahana-Carmon, Dalia Ravikovitch, and Ronit Matalon, in which rest appears as a process of coping, creativity, and even communication. In a reality that demands constant vigilance, these literary texts invite us to reconsider sleep as an unexpected site of healing and repair. Register here This free workshop is presented in Hebrew. Lost Your password ? ← Back to Site The B’Mitzvah Way Program Overview The B’Mitzvah year marks the beginning of a journey—an emotional, social, and physical journey that our tweens, and their families and community. What does it mean to become a B’Mitzvah? What does it mean to transition into adulthood? What kind of human beings do we hope our tweens will grow into—and how do they view this themselves, and begin to live it out in the world? Why do we read from the Torah as part of a B’Mitzvah—and should that always be the way? Might there be other meaningful ways to mark this milestone in our tweens’ lives? Over the course of this program, tweens and their parents will have time and space to reflect deeply, grow together, and connect with Jewish wisdom, tradition, and community. Cook, celebrate, and connect with Jewish holidays and traditions—exploring what they mean to us personally, especially through the lens of our experiences as tweens. Explore the real challenges of this age and seek out wisdom in Judaism that can guide us. Collaborate with Wilderness Torah to experience Judaism through nature and the seasons. __________________________ In the second year: We’ve teamed up with Judaism Your Way to bring you a unique second year program. We offer two distinct pathways for continuing this journey, allowing each tween to shape their own unique expression of becoming a B’Mitzvah: Torah service – this path will include learning prayers and the weekly portion, connecting the Torah with their personal story, and writing Dvar Torah that is based on this. All of this will be done while designing the service to the tween and family needs. Personal project – this path will include designing a personal project, volunteering, art project, and interviews around a topic that the tween is passionate about. Your tween will be able to design the project and reflect on it at the end of the journey. Schedule Year 1: The B’Mitzvah Way program will meet every other Sunday from September 7, 2025 – May 17,2026. Each meeting will run from 4-6pm. Year 2: The B’Mitzvah Way program will meet every other Sunday from September 7, 2025 – May 17, 2026. Each meeting will run from 6-7:30pm. Fees Cost : Year 1: $2,750 Year 2: $3,750* *The second year cost includes personal Be Mitzvah training and the ceremony officiant. Cancellation Policy If you wish to withdraw your child from the program, a Schedule Change email must be submitted to the Manager of Teen Programs. The $500 deposit will be forfeited for any withdrawal before the end of the school year. Any withdrawals will be subject to a prorated refund, at the discretion of the Manager of Teen Programs. This is our newest addition to the early childhood center, created in response to the needs of our growing community. We understand that the first place you entrust with your child should feel like a gentle transition from home, and the JCC is committed to providing a nurturing and supportive environment for both you and your family. Kitat Kohavim maintains a strong connection to home life through frequent daily updates and photos, regular walks and outdoor time, and a safe, comforting space for rest. We strive to be the next best thing to being with you, and we opened this program with the confidence that we can provide just that. Kitat Yareach (18 months+) The Yareach classroom serves young toddlers at JCC East Bay. Welcoming children, beginning at 18 months, Yareach supports our little learners as they begin to explore the changing world around them. This classroom celebrates important developmental milestones, encouraging curiosity and discovery in a safe, nurturing environment. Our team of educators create a balanced day of open exploration and structured learning to support children in developing their social-emotional skills and ease into school life in an environment rich with Jewish culture and values. Kitat Shemesh (2yrs+) The Shemesh (sun) classroom supports toddlers as they first enter the preschool world. For many children, this classroom is where Jewish time and ritual become trackable. The excitement for Shabbat grows, and the interest as to when Friday will come heightens. Children in this classroom are at the beginning stages of independent play that starts to include others, and teachers support them with modeling important strategies for prosocial behavior. In addition to this, the Shemesh classroom is where independence skills flourish, often centered on self-soothing practices, self-care skills, and how to advocate for yourself in a group setting. Kitat Shamayim (3-4years) When children turn three, they often begin to develop the first of their meaningful lifelong friendships. The Shamayim (sky) classroom gives children the opportunity to explore these connections in tandem with their conflict-resolution skills. Teachers in this classroom have a greater focus on assisting children in this social emotional growth during this crucial year, and they can often be seen supporting children as they learn to advocate for themselves and others. Children in this classroom are also encouraged to begin holding Jewish practice in their classroom, often leading Shabbat for their classroom, or picking-up our local challah for noshing . Kitat Yam (3-4years) Hebrew & English Dual Language Classroom Studies show that children at the age of 3 are in their most successful year of language development and learning. Our Hebrew language classroom, Kitat Yam, is modeled off of dual language learning schools in Israel known as Yad B’Yad , who maintain one teacher for each language in the classroom. Kitat Yam will have two teachers who each speak Hebrew and English, but who each represent one language for the classroom environment. This model allows children coming from Israel to feel supported while learning English, while also supporting children who might be new to Hebrew acquisition. Kitat Yam is designed as a dip into the pool of Hebrew language, and it is not exclusively an immersion classroom. Our hope is to ease children into language acquisition without overwhelm or frustration. Learn more here . Kitat Adamah (TK) Adamah means “earth” or “soil” in Hebrew, and the Adamah classroom represents the rich foundation that supports students as they complete this important bridge year between preschool and their transition into elementary school. This classroom was intentionally designed to nurture Jewish identity and a sense of belonging, to keep Transitional Kindergarten (TK) rooted in early childhood practice, and to thoughtfully integrate a play-based philosophy with a more structured academic curriculum. Kitat Adamah offers meaningful learning experiences that support students in reaching academic milestones beyond those of a typical early childhood setting, thoughtfully adapted from the California Common Core. Grounded in the Reggio Emilia approach, Adamah students explore early literacy, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), history and culture, and more through hands-on exploration, play, and inquiry-based learning. For families seeking a TK experience that remains firmly grounded in early childhood values, Kitat Adamah offers a developmentally appropriate and enriching option. All classroom artwork has been created by Ilana Diamond for the JCC East Bay. Preschool Schedule & Fees The 2025-2026 school year runs from August 13, 2025 – July 29, 2026, and the 2026-2027 school year runs from August 24, 2026 – July 28, 2027. The core Preschool program runs 5 days/week: Earlycare (optional): 8:30-9am Full day (Monday-Friday): 9am-3:30pm Extended Care (optional): 3:30-5:30pm We also offer 3- or 4-day options for some full day program hours (9am-3:30pm), or a half day option (9am-1pm). We celebrate Sukkot by dwelling in a foliage-covered, temporary home known as a sukkah and by shaking four species of plants ( arba minim ). Celebrate Sukkot with the JCC East Bay! The JCC East Bay in partnership with Camp Tawonga , Olamim , Jewish Baby Network , Jewish Gateways , PJ Library Bay Area , Hebrew Free Loan , and Music by Heart are teaming up for an interactive celebration. Join us for an afternoon full of fun: Shake a lulav and etrog Grind wheat and make pizza Peddle bike blender smoothies Create multicultural sukkah decorations Nature crafts Edible sukkahs Hebrew Sukkot games Sing and dance with special guest musician, Lior Ben-Hur Mitzvah project – fill backpacks full of school supplies Jewish Baby Network will have a special space and program for families with babies and toddlers. Olamim will offer a space for families to meet up with other Latin Jewish and Spanish-speaking families and offer activities with a Latin Jewish flare. Music by Heart, our new music education program at the JCC East Bay will provide a special presentation for all of our afterschool and preschool families. A safe, welcoming space is more important than ever. A DREAM REALIZED For over 30 years, Moses Libitzky envisioned a vibrant, centralized destination for Jewish life in the East Bay. That vision came to life when he and his business partner and brother-in-law, Nathan Petrowsky, discovered an extraordinary property in Oakland’s Rockridge neighborhood—the former Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream headquarters. With proximity to BART, private parking, and walkable amenities, the 83,000-square-foot, nearly 3-acre site was the perfect canvas. Libitzky describes the moment as “love at first sight,” and together with Petrowsky, they purchased the property in December 2019, laying the groundwork for what is now becoming home of the East Bay Jewish Community Campus. Our experienced counselors build schedules that are age appropriate and inspire creativity in campers. Our aim is to build community through crafts, play, and camp events, and our themed weeks provide scaffolding for skits and activities all summer long. Kids’ Club Camp is an extension of Kids’ Club in OUSD elementary schools, with familiar staff and expanded use of the school campus: Based at Joaquin Miller Elementary School , Kids’ Club Camp is open to all children in grades TK-6. We can reasonably accommodate students with special needs at camp. If your child has an IEP or receives any special services during the school year, please contact us at [email protected] to discuss if Kids’ Club Camp is a good fit for your family’s needs. Throughout the day campers will also have choice periods to explore individual interests. Lunch and snacks are provided by OUSD Nutrition Services daily; campers may bring their own lunch and/or snacks. Weekly themes will give campers an exciting opportunity to be their favorite superhero, or make music by building their own instrument, or test out their skills as an Olympian! Schedule, Fees, & Discounts If you meet the certain criteria for Free or Reduced Price Meals (FRPM), Foster, Migrant, Unhoused, and/or English Language Learner, you will not be responsible for the tuition and any other fees. Yes, the Camp Parent Handbook will be updated soon! What should my child bring to camp? And what about lunch and snacks? Campers should bring a backpack with a full water bottle, sunscreen, and a hat. A change of clothes and a light sweatshirt is always a good idea. Please label everything. Lunch and snacks are provided by OUSD Nutrition Services daily, but campers may bring their own lunch and/or snacks, if desired. If medication is necessary during the program, an OUSD Authorization for Medication form has to be filled and submitted to be able for a staff to assist the student. What type of training will staff receive? Prior to camp, all staff will attend a full schedule of in-person training on all policies and procedures including: age appropriate programming, active supervision, health and safety related procedures, training in effective communication, building community, inclusive programming, and much more. How many campers will be in each group? Groups may include up to 20 campers, with 2-3 counselors at any given time. Can we pick a friend for our camper to be with in a group? Lost Your password ? ← Back to Site Berkeley Afterschool, Club Kehillah & Edah Program Overview Program Overview Our TK-5 Berkeley Afterschool program is all about supporting and mentoring youth as they grow to become impactful and engaged citizens. You have several options to complete your afterschool schedule: Traditional Berkeley Afterschool (BAS) offers a wide variety of activities including sports, science, art, reading, and many choose-your-own-offerings. Our program incorporates Jewish values, experiences, cultural observances, and weekly Shabbat celebrations. We also offer Chugim (specialty enrichment classes) weekly, that are even more unique – making pottery, cooking, creative writing, bookmaking, sewing, Judo, and much more! Edah takes the relaxed atmosphere, sense of community, and creativity and fun of high quality afterschool care and builds with it a beautiful environment for Jewish and Hebrew education. Experiential learning focuses on things that families care about: meaning making, values transmission, critical thinking, and communication skills. Edah students develop real Hebrew language skills, positive feelings about themselves as Jews, and a sense of belonging to the Jewish people. An added bonus of BAS and Edah for our 4th and 5th grade students is Club Kehillah. This program provides a tailored leadership experience for older elementary school children. Club Kehillah students will participate in leadership opportunities, special field trips, mitzvah projects, and more. Here’s the best part…you don’t have to choose just one! Select from: Full or part time traditional BAS Full or part time Edah A combination of both pathways Wilderness Torah We are excited that Wilderness Torah will be running nature-connected Jewish programming activities as a part of our afterschool offerings. For the 2025-2026 school year, they will be hosting events on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays at Live Oak Park, weather permitting. Click here to learn more about Wilderness Torah. Learn more about BAS Berkeley Afterschool offers a safe, affirming environment that allows all students to be their authentic selves. Youth will develop lasting relationships with peers and adults, building bridges with our community and beyond. We believe in a balance of structure and freedom, providing students with the opportunities for free play and organized activities. We encourage students to explore their interests and passions, develop their voice, and grow as individuals. What does a typical day look like in BAS? We start every day with free choice stations. Stations include art projects, big-body movement on the playground, and games in the game room. We also have a robust snack, such as bagels or pita chips with hummus, with fresh cut fruits and veggies always available. Later in the day, we have a second smaller snack, usually crackers, popcorn, or chips. We offer vegan and allergen-friendly options, and all of the food we provide to the children is certified Kosher. Then, students have an hour of structured program time which varies day-to-day: On Mondays we have group time where children spend time in age cohorts. On Tuesdays and Thursdays we have c hugim (electives) which are ongoing elective workshops where kids get to try out an enrichment activity and build on their learning week to week. Kids choose to sign up for a class that runs for approximately 8-weeks per session, with 4-sessions across the school year. While these electives vary between each round, some examples of previously-offered chug options include sports, polymer clay art, ceramics, sewing, American Sign Language, crafting, STEM, creative writing, Judo, and many more! On Wednesdays we offer Choices. Choices are one-off enrichment activities that kids choose day-of, and can participate in regardless of previous experience. On Fridays we have a short group time in age cohorts, and then we gather all together for a sweet Shabbat celebration where we sing songs, recite the blessings, drink grape juice, and eat challah! Here is a sample schedule of a typical week at BAS: Learn more about Edah Edah is our Jewish learning village! Students are immersed in Jewish culture and tradition, holidays and values, and Hebrew as a living, breathing language. Our teachers, trained in pedagogies that put the child at the center, foster a community of inquiry, active choices, and joyful collaborative learning. In Jewish learning and Hebrew language alike, children’s motivation grows alongside mastery. The Edah afternoon is divided into four main parts. Mavoh ( Introduction) : Mavoh is all about recharging our batteries. Students direct themselves to the stations of their choice as they arrive from their various schools. They check in with friends, chilling, chatting and enjoying a little nosh at our friendly snack bar (where they learn to order in Hebrew), and then settling down to choose a station: The art-room? The building studio? The Lego lab? Perhaps an activity in the courtyard, visiting a different country and its Jewish community each week? So many choices! After an outdoor recess, it’s time for… Z’man Ivrit (Hebrew Time): During Z’man Ivrit we create a little Hebrew speaking world in our classrooms. Using games, songs, stories, role-play, and reading and writing we acquire real Hebrew language skills. Edah kids love Z’man Ivrit because it’s fun, and also because they recognize their own success! Z’man Kvutza (Group Time): During Z’man Kvutza we strengthen friendships and build skills as we dive into the rich world of Jewish culture and tradition. Reflecting the diversity of the Jewish community, we bring life to the expression: there are seventy faces to the Torah – exploring ideas from as many perspectives as there are learners in the room. Ma’agal (Closing circle): Our m a’agal brings us together as one community, singing and celebrating one another, creating leadership opportunities for older kids, and role models for younger ones. Wednesday Chugim ( electives): On Wednesdays, in place of Z’man Kvutza , we have chugim (elective) workshops that run for roughly 8-weeks. Jewish Dungeons & Dragons, polymer clay jewelry, fabric arts, gardening, sports and more while practicing and learning Hebrew. Our teachers bring their passions and talents to the program and infuse them with Jewish and Hebrew content. A highlight of the week for many students! Kids’ Club at Thornhill provides children the opportunity to expand their learning through enrichment classes, develop meaningful relationships with their teachers, and build community with their peers. The program serves to complement and enhance learning in the classroom through educational, physical, artistic, and social emotional experiences in a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere. Kids’ Club at Thornhill includes structured outside play, homework support, and plenty of fun activities to complement your child’s school day. Our staff is well trained in communication, conflict management, and lesson planning, and is here to support your child’s needs whether it be helping with homework, reading a story, painting, or playing an energetic game of soccer. We are also proud to partner with OUSD to provide free aftercare for families of students with certain financial or other needs. This program is supported by ELO-P funds and these funds are intended to support all students in need. Click here for the 2025-2026 school year calendar. We abide by the OUSD school calendar. Kids’ Club and Morning Care will be closed on any holidays, PD Days, and other days off. If students have minimum days, Kids’ Club will follow the minimum day schedule. Is there a handbook with more information? The 2025-2026 parent handbook can be accessed here . How do you handle poor air quality? The JCC East Bay has a comprehensive Air Quality decision-making matrix that we employ when the AQI reaches unhealthy levels. Generally speaking, for AQI levels between 51 and 150 (Moderate and Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups), we will take more breaks and do less intense activities outdoors, and also decide to move activities indoors. We will utilize HEPA filters when indoors to filter out air particles from the outdoors. At Unhealthy levels (AQI 151-200), we will asses the current levels and hourly projections to determine program closures. If we decide to keep the building and programs open within this level, we will keep everyone indoors and utilize HEPA filters. At Very Unhealthy levels and beyond (201+), we will close our building and suspend all of our programs. As air quality changes rapidly and is hard to predict, we will take building and program closures on a day by day basis. We are in constant communication with local school districts and will also consult with them on AQI if/when appropriate. What is your refund/credit policy? We’ve all had to learn how to be flexible! The JCC East Bay coordinates our offerings to complement school districts, schedules, air quality, and more. We begin the year with a certain schedule and options and recognize that circumstances can change. As such, we strive to notify you as soon as possible about changes in programs and associated payments. There may be situations where the JCC East Bay is unable to provide planned services due to natural disasters or public health concerns. In these situations, refunds for charges already made will not be provided — however, future charges will be suspended until services can resume. Lost Your password ? ← Back to Site Camp @ JCC East Bay Program Overview Camp @ JCC East Bay offers an intimate day camp experience where campers can build healthy friendships with peers and counselors, try new things, develop new skills, test personal limits, and above all, learn how we come together to create an amazing community and experience in a fun and safe setting. We aim to give campers a sense of self and a sense of their own Judaism as they experience a wide breadth of activities. New this year is an expanded partnership with Wilderness Torah , who will implement nature-based camp fun! Through this partnership, campers will have unique outdoor experiences, field trips, and special activities highlighting the beautiful area we live in and our connection with it. This program offers a unique blend of outdoor education, Jewish learning, and community building. Our goal is to provide campers with meaningful experiences that cultivate nature connection in a Jewish context. We know that swimming embodies one of the best parts of summer! Campers will receive both swim instruction and free swim at King Pool. Instruction and free swim will be 2x/week. Our swimming schedule is set by the park itself, and we will have a confirmed schedule closer to the start of camp. Camp-wide special events, and a special Shabbat to close out each week will also be highlights of the summer. Camp @ JCC East Bay is geared toward the camper who wants a more personalized camp experience in a rich Jewish environment. For Summer 2026, JCC East Bay will offer several options for camp: Sababa! (סַבָּבָּה) - Hebrew Immersion June 15-July 17 Sababa! Camp is June 15-July 2. Optional Sababa! odd-on weeks July 6-17 are available a la carte only for campers participating in the 3 week session. S – Sports B – Bricha (swimming pool) B – Bishul (cooking) A – Art Hakol B’ivrit (all in Hebrew) Following on from the success of last year’s pioneering pilot program, Sababa! @ JCC East Bay is back, for rising K-4th graders. Our Hebrew immersion day camp bridges the gap between Israel and Berkeley. Sababa! offers all the fun of a traditional summer camp, but almost fully immersed in Hebrew language. Campers experience Israeli flavors and culture as part of each camp day. Hebrew-speaking specialists in art, food, music, and nature, mean that no one sits around learning ‘about’ Ivrit (Hebrew language). At Sababa! We simply do it in Ivrit ! This is just good old-fashioned summer kef (fun) in an immersive linguistic environment, tailor-made to build confidence and enthusiasm for every Hebrew language learner, from novice to native-speaker. Sababa! @ JCC East Bay emphasizes all the things that a great camp experience should: building healthy friendships, trying new things, developing new skills, and having fun! Traditional Day Camp June 15-July 24 Our traditional day camp offers a well-rounded summer experience that blends music, art, sports, swimming, and silly camp games into each day. Campers make tasty treats, build friendships, and learn the value of teamwork and cooperation. Jewish traditions are integrated throughout the program, grounding activities in Jewish values like inviting new friends, learning from each other, and treating each other respectfully. The result is a welcoming environment where children can have fun, grow, and feel connected. Camp @ JCC East Bay is an extension of Berkeley Afterschool, and is open to all rising TK-4th graders. Details Field Trips with Wilderness Torah Meaningful experiences that cultivate nature connection in a Jewish context with Wilderness Torah Weekly swim lessons and free swim at King Pool Weekly walking field trips to Live Oak Havdalah to begin each week with music and a moment of reflection Weekly specialists Israeli Shlichim (emissaries) full time in Sababa! And part time in traditional camp. The Shaliach/Shlichim is a post-army Israeli young adult trained specifically to work with kids in Jewish day camps – bringing us Israeli flavor, culture, and language! Celebrating Shabbat at the end of each week with homemade challah, grape juice, and a song session to sweeten the close of our weeks together! Campers are grouped by age and will spend most of the day in their age groups. Campers should provide their own Kosher-style lunch. Camp will provide Kosher snacks daily, but you may supplement with your own. Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions. 2026 CIT Program Overview Our CIT program gives incoming 7th through 9th graders an exciting early chance to build real work experience while still enjoying all the fun of summer camp! CITs will spend most of their week helping our staff run daily activities. From supporting counselors with their groups to helping brainstorm and design projects for younger campers, CITs play an important role in creating an awesome camp experience for everyone. All participants receive hands-on training throughout the summer. We’ll start with a mandatory training day on Thursday, June 11 , and each week will include a fun, interactive workshop on topics like leadership, communication, and planning great activities. Daily check-ins ensure every CIT feels supported, confident, and set up to succeed. Of course, CITs are still campers too! Each week includes team-building activities like games, challenges, or special excursions designed to help CITs connect, grow, and make lasting memories. Beginning in August 2026, we are thrilled to offer expanded early childhood programming on the new East Bay Jewish Community Campus in Oakland’s Rockridge neighborhood. Our new campus will bring together Infant Care, Preschool, Transitional Kindergarten, extended care enrichment, and family-centered programs in a thoughtfully designed space created for connection, learning, and community. Below, you can learn about our philosophy, explore our programs, and get to know our team. Educational Philosophy Play-based Philosophy: The JCC East Bay is a play-based institution, grounded in the belief that children are capable of developing foundational skills through rich, engaging play. Our team of educators approach play-based practice with intention, recognizing play as a critical and essential component of children’s lifelong learning. Play-based learning is learning—it extends far beyond unstructured free play or the presence of activity materials in the classroom. Our educators create yearly curriculum maps, weekly lesson plans, and learning objectives which all center around children’s unique, emerging interests. Our teaching team thoughtfully designs and curates learning environments that reflect children’s curiosity and invite exploration, inquiry, and growth. By observing and intentionally scaffolding children’s play, we affirm that their ideas and creativity are valuable. For example, when children begin exploring concepts of movement and force, they may naturally build ramps or experiment with rolling objects. Teachers extend this learning by introducing new materials such as blocks, cars, or paper airplanes, as well as related library books, obstacle courses, and balance activities that encourage whole-body movement. Reggio-Emilia Philosophy: The JCC of the East Bay is Reggio Emilia inspired in our approach to early childhood education. Reggio Emilia is an educational philosophy dedicated to child-led inquiry, inquisitive curiosity, and an admiration for the natural world. Following a child’s natural interests guides our teachers’ in their core classroom curriculum and plans. For example, an innate curiosity about snowflakes might guide teachers in their curriculum planning and play materials. When the interest arises, teachers can scaffold unique learning opportunities, such as studying the hexagonal shape in the middle and measuring length (mathematics), creating snowflake mixed-media creations (art), and even learning more about the ways dust will wrap around a single particle as to create each unique snowflake (science). Our educational team values this play-based learning, using these techniques to show how children learn to read, write, and count– academic skill development, while still keeping a love for learning and the magic of childhood at the center of their learning. Identity & Inclusion Identity Building and Inclusion : We believe that each child is created b’tzelem Elohim (in the Divine image). With Jewish life and culture at the core, we provide unique opportunities for all students to explore their multilayered identities through a Jewish lens. We celebrate the unique identity of each student and family, fostering a sense of community that nurtures and strengthens the nefesh (soul) of every individual. Early childhood is a critical time in building identity, developing relational skills, and nurturing social-emotional growth, and we approach this responsibility with great care and intention. Using the Jewish tradition as a backdrop, children are invited to explore their own identities, regardless of whether they are Jewish. On the Lunar New Year teachers can be found talking about how making bao (a traditional Chinese steamed bun) might feel similar to our challah baking each Friday. While some children practice weekly Shabbat, others share stories of rest and relaxation from their own homes and customs during classroom meeting times. Our community is diverse at the JCC East Bay, and we aim to create space and belonging for all of our families through celebrations of different cultural holidays (Dia de los Muertos, Diwali, The Lunar New Year, etc.), our literature selections, inclusive language, and more. Neurodiversity: The JCC is proud to be an inclusive program, and we believe that high quality early childhood education should be accessible to all. We work collaboratively with inclusion specialists who support our staff in providing the highest quality of care to our diverse range of learners. We feel fortunate to have access to our sensory room, varying sensory tools, inclusive materials (visual schedules, educational plans, social stories, and more), ongoing professional development for our staff, and a commitment that the true foundation of early childhood education is seeing each child as unique. Jewish Life & Culture Jewish life and culture : Being a part of the JCC East Bay community means that children have the opportunity to explore the many different ways of what it means to be Jewish in the world! We have devoted teachers from many walks of Jewish life who know there’s more than one way to be Jewish. Children engage with all different kinds of Jewish practices, tradition, and heritage such as making kosher challah (is there any blood in the eggs?!) or dancing with joy on Shabbat. We believe what makes Jewish life so fascinating is its plurality, and we hope to share this with the children in our program. World Jewry : Here in the East Bay, we are committed to bringing the richness of world Jewry to our doors and reflecting the vibrant plurality of Jewish life both in the Bay Area and abroad. In every classroom, core Jewish holidays, such Chanukah and Sukkot, are honored and explored through diverse customs and educational explorations. You may join us for fresh mouflettot (Moroccan flatbread) as we celebrate Mimouna , a Morrocan-Jewish holiday celebrated at the end of Passover, or Sigd , an Ethiopian-Jewish celebration. We engage children with a wide range of Jewish traditions—Mizrahi, Latin-Jewish, Sephardic, Ashkenazi, Beta Israel, and more—and we’re proud to share a sense of Peoplehood with Jewish communities in Ethiopia, Israel, and across the globe. Serving over 9,000 people each year, the JCC plays an important role as a communal gathering place, celebrating people of all ages, backgrounds, and types of observance. Over the years, the JCC East Bay has absorbed and strengthened vital programs that originated at other local JCCs, including Oakland afterschool and the JCC Maccabi Games®. In 2006, we became the JCC East Bay to reflect our broad geographic reach in Alameda and Contra Costa counties. The Berkeley branch, which is a historic landmark building, is home to an award-winning preschool, vibrant afterschool programs, and spaces for the entire community to come together. This extension of the formal school day at Hintil is dedicated to Transitional Kindergarten (TK) students. The program serves to complement and enhance learning in the classroom through educational, physical, artistic, and social emotional experiences in a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. Kids’ Club at Hintil provides children with the opportunity to expand their learning through enrichment classes, develop meaningful relationships with their teachers, and build community with their peers. The program includes structured outside play, literacy growth, and plenty of fun activities to complement your child’s school day. Our staff is well trained in communication, conflict management, and lesson planning. We are here to support your child’s needs – from reading a story and painting, to playing an energetic game of soccer. We are proud to partner with OUSD to provide free aftercare for families of students with certain financial or other needs. This program is supported by ELO-P funds and these funds are intended to support all students in need. You may also choose to pay for the school year in full and receive a 5% discount. Kids’ Club is closed on all days when OUSD is closed, and up to 3 days when school is open for additional professional development for our teachers. If you meet the certain criteria for Free or Reduced Price Meals (FRPM), Foster, Migrant, Unhoused, and/or English Language Learner, you will not be responsible for the tuition and any other fees. If you have a lower income, please review our tiered pricing strategy based on income and household size. We also encourage all paying families to review the financial aid section below. Eligibility for a reduced fee through the tiered pricing strategy does not disqualify eligibility for financial aid. Any family may apply. Along with your completed Enrollment Agreement, each enrolling child requires a $100 deposit and a $50 Registration Fee. The Registration Fee is non-refundable. The deposit will be refunded at the completion of the school year, unless you choose to donate, assuming all balances have been settled. Withdrawal before the end of the school year will result in the forfeiture of your deposit. Financial Aid We are committed to helping all families attend our high- quality aftercare program. We encourage all families to complete this form. Applications are reviewed on an individual basis, taking many factors into consideration, including but not limited to financial status. Applications will be reviewed within two weeks, on a rolling basis. Applications are confidential and shared only with the CFO and CPO of the JCC. No background or credit checks are run, and information is used exclusively for determining financial aid for the 2025-2026 school year. We abide by the OUSD school calendar. Kids’ Club will be closed on any holidays, PD Days, and other days off. If students have minimum days, Kids’ Club will follow the minimum day schedule. Is there a handbook with more information? The 2025-2026 parent handbook will be available before the end of the 2024-2025 school year. How do you handle poor air quality? The JCC East Bay has a comprehensive Air Quality decision-making matrix that we employ when the AQI reaches unhealthy levels. Generally speaking, for AQI levels between 51 and 150 (Moderate and Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups), we will take more breaks and do less intense activities outdoors, and also decide to move activities indoors. We will utilize HEPA filters when indoors to filter out air particles from the outdoors. At Unhealthy levels (AQI 151-200), we will asses the current levels and hourly projections to determine program closures. If we decide to keep the building and programs open within this level, we will keep everyone indoors and utilize HEPA filters. At Very Unhealthy levels and beyond (201+), we will close our building and suspend all of our programs. As air quality changes rapidly and is hard to predict, we will take building and program closures on a day by day basis. We are in constant communication with local school districts and will also consult with them on AQI if/when appropriate. What is your refund/credit policy? We’ve all had to learn how to be flexible! The JCC East Bay coordinates our offerings to complement school districts, schedules, air quality, and more. We begin the year with a certain schedule and options and recognize that circumstances can change. As such, we strive to notify you as soon as possible about changes in programs and associated payments. There may be situations where the JCC East Bay is unable to provide planned services due to natural disasters or public health concerns. In these situations, refunds for charges already made will not be provided — however, future charges will be suspended until services can resume. If my child goes to TK at another school, can they attend Kids’ Club Hintil? Our Kids’ Club Program is for Hintil TK students only. Lost Your password ? ← Back to Site Board Board Members Tamara Abrams Tamara was born and raised in the Bay Area, and has called Berkeley home for more than 20 years. She completed a Master of Public Affairs at The Goldman School of Public Policy at UC Berkeley in 2022. Her work now focuses on addressing climate change by supporting the transition of homes and businesses from gas to electricity. During her legal career, Tamara worked on domestic violence policy issues as an attorney for the California court system, taught seminars on domestic violence at Golden Gate University School of Law, and headed the legal program at the Center for Domestic Violence Prevention in San Mateo County. She spends most of her weekends watching her twin boys play baseball and enjoys hiking, backpacking, and spending time with family and friends. Jason Appelbaum Born in Chicago, raised in Wisconsin and Santa Barbara, Jason has called the Bay Area home since 1992 and has lived in Oakland’s Rockridge neighborhood for the last 20 years. After graduating from UC Santa Cruz, Jason’s passion for sports led him to a career in television broadcasting, first behind the scenes as an Executive Sports Producer, and later as a Sportscaster at both KRON-TV and KTVU. Inspired by both of his parents who were heavily involved in the civil rights movement, he has long been passionate about issues involving social justice and equity. Jason and his wife Sharon have a son and a daughter, and love catching as many of their daughter’s soccer games as possible, movie nights, reading, traveling, and spending time with their extended families and their beloved dog Cubby. Rena Dorph Rena Dorph Ph.D. has worked in the field of education with a focus on learning research, program design, and evaluation for over 20 years. She is currently the Director of The Lawrence Hall of Science at UC Berkeley. She serves as the Principal Investigator for multiple STEM learning R&D projects including as a Founder and Principal Investigator of the Activation Lab and the Executive Producer and Co-Creator of the animated musical series, The Lawrence Rocks!. Rena serves on multiple governing and advisory boards across general and Jewish education organizations. She co-founded Edah and Studio 70, and was the Board President of Studio 70 before the organization merged with the JCC East Bay. In 2019 Rena was recognized by the San Francisco Business Times as one of the Bay Area’s Most Influential Women in Bay Area Business. Steven Douglas, President Steve is a fifth generation Oaklander and partner in his family business, Douglas Parking LLC. In addition to serving on the JCC Board, Steve is a member of the Guardsmen, a philanthropic organization dedicated to raising funds for underprivileged and at-risk children in the Bay Area. His community work includes the Board of Directors of the National Parking Association, the Oakland Museum of California, the Oakland Chamber of Commerce, Jewish Federation of the East Bay, the Lake Merritt/Uptown Business District, and Temple Sinai. He is passionate about baseball, and in particular, the Oakland A’s. He lives in Oakland with his wife and has two children. Steve has served on the JCC East Bay Board since 2013. Ben Elkin Originally a Los Angeles native, Ben recently passed half his life in the Bay Area. Growing up, he had a strong Jewish cultural identity thanks to weekly family Shabbat dinners and involvement in youth groups and summer camp. Ben got his MBA from UC Berkeley, and currently works in an investment capacity at the University of California’s Office of the President. He manages endowment and pension assets system-wide, and takes pride in helping ensure the institutions’ long-term vitality. Ben enjoys cooking and baking, biking (slowly) in the East Bay hills, rooting for the Dodgers (back-to-back!), and planning the next camping or international trip. Ben and his wife Elyssa live in Oakland near Lake Merritt. Aaron Fischer, Immediate Past President Aaron grew up in the East Bay, and attended preschool at the JCC in Oakland. As a teenager, he participated on a gold medal-winning basketball team in the JCC Maccabi Games®. Aaron graduated from UC Berkeley, and spent several years in New York City and Washington DC before returning to the Bay Area, where he works as a lawyer, mostly in the areas of disability rights and civil rights. Aaron, his wife, and two children now live in Berkeley. Both children attended preschool and now attend afterschool and teen programs at the JCC East Bay. Aaron has served on the JCC East Bay Board since 2016. Matt Heaton Matt is an attorney at Goldfarb & Lipman LLP, where he works in affordable housing development. His clients include a range of nonprofits, public entities, and for-profit housing developers. Before joining Goldfarb & Lipman, Matt practiced in the New York office of Schulte, Roth & Zabel LLP as a real estate finance attorney. He settled in the East Bay in 2012, where he took a hiatus from the law to be a full-time at home parent. Matt connected with the JCC East Bay through the preschool program – both his children attended. Matt received his JD from St. John’s University School of Law, where he participated in the law review, and he received a BA from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied political science, history and psychology. Matt lives in Berkeley and works in Oakland. Michael Kahn Michael is a litigation partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, where he represents companies, boards of directors, and executives in securities litigation and other business disputes. Originally from San Diego, Michael went to college at UC Berkeley (where he majored in history, and minored in Jewish studies); to law school at NYU; and, after practicing for a few years in New York, he moved back to the Bay Area. Michael lives in the East Bay with his wife and two sons. Benita Kline Benita was a member of the Board of the JCC of the East Bay from 2006-09 and served as President for one year. She served on the Board of Directors of the Jewish Community Federation of the East Bay and represented the Jewish community on the Alameda County FEMA Board for ten years. A native New Yorker, Benita has held senior leadership roles in Jewish communal organizations, including the United Jewish Community Centers of San Francisco, Marin and the Peninsula and the Jewish Federation of the Greater East Bay. In 1998, she co-founded Leventhal/Kline Management, Inc., providing comprehensive financial and management services to foundations, which was acquired by Third Plateau Social Impact Strategies in 2020. Benita is the co-founder and Treasurer of the Board of Art & Remembrance, a nonprofit dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the art and story of Holocaust survivor Esther Nisenthal Krinitz. Benita holds an M.S. in Organizational Psychology from San Francisco State University and attended the New School for Social Research in New York. Jewish athletes from the East Bay will participate as members of Team San Francisco, joining over 2,800 Jewish teens from across the globe for the 2025 JCC Maccabi Games. Among the highlights of this unique, Olympic-style Jewish experience will be: sports competitions – including opening and closing ceremonies, travel, community service, social and cultural events, and opportunities to create Jewish connections, friendships and memories to last a lifetime. For this year’s Maccabi Games, JCC East Bay is encouraging our community to join the delegation being organized by JCCSF.
