All of our programs are 100% customizable. If you want more hours, we can do that! If you're running out of time, we'll work with that too. GRE Preparation 20-40 hours We recommend 20 hour, 30 hour, or 40 hour tutoring prep for the ACT or SAT -- that gives us 2-3 months on the low end to prepare to raise your scores. We cover essay writing, math, reading, writing, and science (ACT only) in this time. RECOMMEND: 30 hrs. Learn More SHORT TERM PREP If you find you're a bit short on time, that's okay. If you work hard, three weeks of lead time can be enough to help bump your score. Students with at least three weeks should meet with me twice a week for 2 hours each; that gives us 20 hours. You will be expected to spend a substantial amount of time on this test and homework will be assigned. Plan to spend at least 2 hours on homework for every 1 hour of tutoring we have together. LONG TERM PREP This is the ideal way to prepare for these exams. We work together once a week for two hour sessions over the course of at least 3 months. You will still have outside work to do, but it's a much more leisurely pace in general. Find out which schools take the SuperScore here. Important Strategy Updates 1. The "Required" List is Growing A massive shift happened for the 2025-2026 cycle. Schools like Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Brown, Dartmouth, UT Austin, and Caltech have joined MIT and Georgetown in requiring test scores again. If these are on your list, testing isn't an option—it’s a requirement. 2. The Digital Tests Are Here The SAT is now fully digital and adaptive. This means the test changes difficulty based on your performance in the first module. Prep now requires mastering the "Bluebook" interface and understanding how to maximize points in a shorter, faster-paced format. The ACT also offers an online version, but it is the same exact exam as the paper test, which is also still offered. It is not adaptive, which means you see all the questions and won't be locked out of a score. 3. The SuperScore Advantage Don't forget that many schools (including most on this list) accept the ACT and SAT SuperScore. This allows us to take your best section scores from different dates to create a higher "composite" total. 4. A Note on UCLA & UC Schools The University of California system (UCLA, UC Berkeley, etc.) is currently Test-Blind. They will not look at your scores for admission, even if you send them. Focus your energy on your essays and GPA for these specific applications! Testing With us Kate's Tutoring is your guide to these exams. You're unique. Your testing prep and schedule should be unique too. We believe in helping your family create a perfect test prep plan for YOU -- no one else. Let's work together to make a plan to fill your needs. They're taking honors classes and genuinely working hard. But when they mention applying to UC Berkeley or Boston University, your stomach drops. "Be realistic," you want to say. "Those schools are for straight-A students." Here's what I need you to know after 15 years of college admissions work: B students absolutely get into competitive colleges . Not just "good" colleges—truly competitive ones. But it requires strategy. What "Competitive" Means (And Why B Students Belong) When I say "competitive colleges," I'm talking about schools with acceptance rates between 25-75%—Boston University, University of Michigan, USC, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Not Ivy League (though even those occasionally admit exceptional B students), but excellent institutions where B students with the right application strategy have legitimate chances. According to the National Association for College Admission Counseling , over 40% of admissions officers rate extracurricular activities, essays, and recommendations as moderately to considerably important—sometimes as important as GPA. The Holistic Admissions Revolution: How B Students Win at College Admissions Most competitive colleges now use holistic admissions, evaluating applicants as whole people: academic rigor (what classes you took, not just grades), extracurricular depth, essays, recommendations, personal context, and test scores. Key insight? A 3.5 GPA student who took challenging courses, demonstrated leadership, and wrote compelling essays often beats a 3.9 GPA student with easy classes and a generic application. Strategy #1 : Choose Course Rigor Over Easy A's Competitive colleges would rather see B's in AP or honors classes than A's in regular courses. Admissions officers look at course rigor first. A 3.4 GPA with six AP classes demonstrates more than a 3.8 GPA from easy courses. Action steps: Take the hardest classes you can handle without failing. B's in AP classes are expected and respected. Show an upward trend—colleges love improvement over time. If your student needs support in challenging courses, Kate's Tutoring can help turn B- students into B+ students in rigorous classes. Strategy #2 : Build Deep, Not Wide, Extracurricular Profiles Competitive colleges want depth, leadership, and genuine impact—not 15 activities. One student with a 3.3 GPA built a community garden program supplying three food banks. She got into UCLA. What works: Sustained commitment (3-4 years in 2-3 activities), leadership progression, measurable impact, and authentic passion. Start now—pick 2-3 activities you genuinely care about and commit deeply. Strategy #3 : Master the Essay (Your Secret Weapon) B students often have richer, more authentic stories than straight-A students: overcoming academic challenges, balancing school with jobs or family responsibilities, finding passion outside the classroom. A stellar essay can compensate for a lower GPA. What works: Specific storytelling (not vague "I learned to work hard"), genuine reflection, forward-looking insights, and authentic teenage voice. Our college admissions support includes essay coaching that helps students find and tell their unique stories. Strategy #4 : Get Strategic About Test Scores Strong test scores can be the difference-maker for B students. A 3.4 GPA with a 1400 SAT makes you significantly more competitive than 3.4 with 1200. The strategy: Take both SAT and ACT diagnostics, invest in serious prep, submit scores strategically (submit if at or above median, consider test-optional if well below). Our SAT/ACT prep specializes in helping B students achieve scores that open doors. Strategy #5 : Build a Strategic College List The strategic list: Reach schools 20-30% (competitive where you're slightly below median but other qualifications are strong), Target schools 40-50% (stats align with their median), Safety schools 30-40% (you're above median, but you'd genuinely attend). Competitive colleges admitting B students (per U.S. News/PrepScholar data): Indiana University Bloomington (avg GPA 3.74), Michigan State (3.75), Syracuse, University of Arizona, University of Colorado Boulder, Fordham, American University. The "Upward Trend" Power Move Improvement is powerful. A student who went from 3.0 freshman year to 3.6 junior year shows maturity and academic potential. Many colleges recalculate GPAs to weigh junior year more heavily. How to leverage it: Address briefly in Additional Information, have your counselor mention it, show what changed. If your student is currently struggling, get academic tutoring support now to create that upward trajectory. The Recommendation Letter Strategy B students can get more powerful recommendations than straight-A students if done right. According to NACAC survey data, 11% of colleges indicate teacher recommendation s are a considerably important factor and 40.5% rate them as moderate importance How: Build genuine relationships with 2-3 teachers over multiple years, contribute meaningfully in class, visit office hours, choose teachers who've seen your growth. Give specific examples: "Remember when I struggled with X but worked with you after school and eventually mastered it?" The best recommendations for B students focus on character, intellectual curiosity, resilience, and contribution to classroom community—not perfect grades. Reality Check: Where It's Harder Highly selective schools (under 25% acceptance) are very difficult for B students unless you have exceptional hooks (recruited athlete, extraordinary talent). Certain competitive programs (direct-admit nursing, engineering, business) often have higher GPA requirements. The good news? There are thousands of excellent colleges where B students thrive, graduate, and succeed. The Timeline Sophomores: Start building extracurricular depth, get tutoring in challenging courses, take diagnostic tests by end of year. Juniors: Critical window. Test prep this spring/summer, finalize college list by fall, start essays in August. Seniors (fall): Focus on essays and polished applications. Too late to change GPA significantly, but make every other element shine. The Bottom Line: B Students Belong at Competitive Colleges Your B student isn't settling when they aim for competitive colleges. They're being realistic and strategic about schools where they can thrive academically, socially, and professionally. The college admissions process isn't just about getting in—it's about finding the right fit where your student will succeed. And for B students with the right strategy, that place is often a competitive, well-regarded institution that will c --> Our Difference | Kate's Tutoring top of page Los Angeles / Glendale, Pasadena, Burbank Tutoring + Worldwide with virtual sessions Current students: Login Here Enroll Now Process & Rates The Process How We Work FAQ Policies Our Options Private Tutoring Semi-Private Sessions Scholarship Opportunities Enrollment Registration Consultation Book Directly with Kate Services Academics English Tutoring Math Tutoring Social Studies & History Tutoring Science Tutoring Test Prep SAT & ACT Prep ISEE / SSAT / HSPT Testing AP Test Prep + Final Exams GRE Prep Consulting & Coaching College Admissions Private School Admissions Executive Function Coaching About Us Our Story Our Difference FAQ Our Team Our Tutors Join The Team Our Results Client Testimonials Policies Contact Resources Planning Test Prep Timelines A More Effective Study Plan Private School Entrance Exams Testing Data ACT Test Dates SAT Test Dates Average ACT & SAT Scores Schools That Superscore Insights Articles Get Started Welcome to Kate's Tutoring: Redefining Online Learning Most online tutoring is a numbers game. How?" because 99% of the time, the way students think they should study is ineffective, boring, and generally a big ol' time suck. "Studying" does not require simply rereading the material or staring blankly at the pages. It needs to be far more engaged than that; students need to engage with the material actively, not passively. So let's draw up a more effective plan together. First up, studying should be done pretty much every day . Yes, your homework does count, but that's not the end all be all if you're struggling in a class. On days when you have NO homework in a class, spend at least 30 minutes per subject: a) actively reviewing notes from class b) answering a few questions in the book c) actively re-reading book OR reading ahead. d) near the end of a unit? TAKE THE CHAPTER TEST/REVIEW. This way you can either get ahead of your exam or make sure you understand more difficult concepts during your down time rather than cramming for it all at once. What do I mean by "active review"? This is really the GOLDEN NUGGET of effective studying, so I'm gonna make this real gigantic: Active review means things like taking notes, writing flashcards, answering questions, and doing the exercises offered in the book. These are things that require you to ENGAGE with the material. Answering questions helps show applied knowledge, doing problems shows you can do the work. Creating & running flashcards keeps vocab in your brain. It's a huge confidence boost and far more effective than sitting in your chair and hoping the material osmosis-es into your brain. Now let's say you DO have homework. Let's break down how to use your time: a) First 15 minutes: review your notes / review book for example problems / skim chapter / etc. Basically use that first 15 to RECAP what you learned. b) 40 minutes: the assignment. Now use your big chunk of time to APPLY that knowledge! c) 5 minutes: break. Because I feel you. If you find your mind tends to wander, try switching classes/topics and start again. Repeat until finished. I've found that helps with brain fog & zoning out. What happens if you get LEGIT stuck? You have a few tools in your belt to employ: a) Check your notes. Sometimes it's in there! b) Check the book EVEN IF your teacher doesn't assign it. c) Use your resources & consult Google (and a friend!) d) Circle the issue & bring it to your next tutoring session Hopefully these simple bullet points get you on track & ready for the rest of your school year! You expected 1400+ (SAT) or 30+ (ACT). Instead, you're staring at 1080 SAT or 21 ACT. Or worse. "How is this possible? Did they even try?" Let me stop you there. I've worked with hundreds of students in exactly this situation: your student tried . The problem isn't effort or intelligence. Standardized tests measure completely different skills than the ones that earn A's in school—and no one taught your teen how to bridge that gap. This high GPA but low test scores scenario is one of the most common—and most fixable—problems I see in my tutoring practice. Why School Success Doesn't Automatically Mean Testing Success GPA and standardized test scores measure different skills. Your teen's stellar GPA proves they can complete assignments consistently, follow instructions, absorb taught material, and manage long-term projects. The SAT and ACT test whether they can solve unfamiliar problems under extreme time pressure, identify patterns in questions they've never seen, manage high-stakes anxiety, and execute strategic thinking about when to skip or guess. If your student hasn't been explicitly taught test-taking strategies, they're taking a test in a foreign language—even if they know all the vocabulary. The Five Hidden Reasons Students With High GPAs Have Low Test Scores 1. Time Management Under Pressure Is a Learned Skill In school, your teen has homework deadlines, project due dates, and test schedules they've known about for days or weeks. They can pace themselves, ask for help, and manage their time across multiple hours or days. On the SAT or ACT ? Poor time management is one of the main causes of low scores. Students run out of time to answer all the questions or they end up rushing through a lot of questions after getting stuck on a few hard problems. Your straight-A student might spend three minutes on a single difficult math problem because in school, persistence is rewarded. On standardized tests, that's three minutes they'll never get back—time that could have answered five easier questions correctly. The fix isn't "work faster." It's learning strategic time allocation: which questions to attempt first, when to make an educated guess and move on, and how to use the testing interface efficiently. 2. Standardized Tests Have Patterns and Traps Schools Don't Teach Your teen has learned grammar rules, algebra concepts, and reading comprehension skills in school. What they haven't learned? How standardized tests often include trick questions or answers, which means that even if you know the material, you can still get fooled and end up choosing the wrong answer. The SAT and ACT aren't testing whether your student knows that "its" is possessive and "it's" is a contraction. They're testing whether students can spot that distinction in 60 seconds while three of the four answer choices look plausible. Schools teach content. Standardized tests test test-taking savvy—and those are not the same thing. 3. Test Anxiety Hits Harder When the Stakes Are Higher Think about it: one bad homework assignment in school drops your grade from a 98% to a 96%. Not ideal, but manageable. One bad section on the SAT or ACT? That can mean the difference between getting into your target college and being rejected. There is typically a lot more pressure to do well on a standardized exam than there is to do well on any single test you take in school because these scores are an important part of college applications. Even students who don't usually experience anxiety can freeze up on test day. Their mind goes blank on questions they'd answer easily in class. They second-guess themselves. They panic as they watch the clock tick down. This isn't a character flaw. It's a completely normal physiological response to high-pressure situations—and it requires specific strategies to manage. 4. Schools Grade on Mastery of Taught Material; Tests Grade on Application Your teen gets A's because they master what's directly taught. The teacher covers quadratic equations, assigns practice problems, and tests on... quadratic equations. The SAT and ACT take that quadratic equation concept and bury it in a word problem about projectile motion that your student has never seen before, expecting them to recognize the underlying pattern and solve it in 90 seconds. It's not that your student doesn't know math. It's that they've never practiced applying math concepts to novel situations under time pressure—because schools rarely require that skill. 5. Grade Inflation Is Real—Standardized Tests Are National Standards Not all A's are equal. A high GPA paired with a low SAT or ACT score can suggest grade inflation at your school. These standardized tests, for better or worse, allow colleges to compare students nationally. If your school's rigor doesn't match your student's GPA, the test will expose that gap. How to Bridge the Gap: What Actually Works Strategic Test Prep, Not Just More Studying Your straight-A student knows how to study. What they need is how to take the SAT or ACT : learning question patterns, practicing timed sections, reviewing mistakes strategically, and building a testing toolkit. At Kate's Tutoring , we don't re-teach content. We teach test patterns, time management, and execution under pressure—the exact skills schools don't cover. Practice Tests Under Real Conditions Real practice means full-length tests in one sitting, strictly timed, no phone or breaks mid-section. This builds stamina, reduces anxiety through familiarity, and calibrates pacing. Targeted Weakness Identification A diagnostic test shows exactly where your student loses points. Our approach focuses on areas yielding the biggest score improvements. Managing Test Anxiety We incorporate breathing techniques, mental rehearsal, and confidence-building through incremental progress. If anxiety is a major factor, see our test anxiety support guide . What Parents Should Do Right Now If your student just got disappointing scores: Don't panic or blame your student. They haven't learned test-specific skills yet. Have an honest conversation. Ask: "How did the test feel? Did you run out of time? Were there unfamiliar questions?" Analyze the score report. Identify patterns in where points were lost. Plan a retake with proper prep. Our timeline guide helps you plan strategically. Get expert help. Test-taking is a skill that requires coaching, not just more studying. Most families come to us expecting to compromise. They assume online means impersonal — a stranger on a screen reading from a worksheet. What they find instead is a tutor who knows their student's habits, anticipates their sticking points, and adjusts in real time. No commute. No scheduling chaos. No drop in quality. Why Families Choose Virtual Tutoring We'll be honest — many of our families initially wanted in-person tutoring. After their first few virtual sessions, most never look back. Here's what online tutoring actually gives you: Access to the right tutor, not just the nearest one. Virtual sessions let us match your student with the best fit — not whoever happens to live nearby. Consistency that holds through anything. Travel, school closures, busy seasons — sessions continue without interruption because there's nothing to reschedule around. Flexibility without sacrificing structure. Adding sessions, shifting times, working across time zones — all of it is simpler when there's no commute involved. Early intervention, not late reaction. When families share grades or coursework, we spot patterns early and adjust before small gaps become big problems. Easy technology. We use platforms families already know—Zoom, Google Meet, or Teams—so sessions start smoothly and focus stays on learning, not troubleshooting. Live personal support. Human Connection, Enhanced by Technology. Our tutors meet one-on-one to build the same rapport and mentorship found in traditional settings. Wondering if virtual tutoring counts as "screen time"? Here's what the research says. "My daughter loved working with Sadie. She worked on her SAT and essay prep. Kate Hackett Oct 14, 2025 7 min read Getting into a selective private or independent school often means taking a standardized admissions exam. These private school entrance exams (like the ISEE, SSAT, HSPT) are meant to level the playing field across different schools, but in practice they tend to favor test-savvy students who have practiced the test , not just learned content in class. Here’s why they feel so tough: Speed + stamina : You’re not judged only on what you know — you’re judged on how fast you can perform under time pressure. Trick questions & distractors : Many questions are subtly phrased to mislead; wrong answer choices are tempting and often share roots or prefixes with the correct word. Scoring Rules: These tests grade ... strangely. They curve the test heavily according to how other kids taking the test did - which means percentages aren't really what we're chasing. Instead, we want to focus on improvement . Hybrid cognitive + knowledge testing : These exams test reasoning skills (what you can figure out) as well as achievement (what you already know). High competition & narrow margins : Because so many applicants prepare, small score improvements (a few points or one percentile) can make a big admission difference. Multiple grade levels testing: This is by far the trickiest point. For some exams, your child may not have learned everything on the test ...and they have to know when to guess and when to actually do the question. So yes — these exams are hard. But they aren’t magical. With the right strategies, you can outperform the baseline. Below is a breakdown of the major exams, what makes them demanding, and tips your student can apply. ISEE (Independent School Entrance Exam) — what, how, and tricks What is ISEE? The ISEE is administered by the ERB and accepted by over 1,200 independent schools. It’s divided into levels by the grade you’re applying to: Primary, Lower, Middle, Upper. The test has five parts : Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics Achievement, and an Essay. The essay is not scored by ERB, but a copy is sent to the schools you apply to and that school has their own metric -- that's right: everyone's grading differently. Timing (Upper level sample): Verbal: ~ 20 min, 40 questions Quantitative Reasoning: ~ 35 min, ~ 37 questions Reading Comprehension: ~ 35 min, ~ 36 questions Math Achievement: ~ 40 min, ~ 47 questions Breaks, then a 30-minute essay Total testing time is around 2h 40min plus breaks. Why ISEE is tricky & common traps Synonym / sentence completion traps : Many distractors share prefixes or suffixes with the target word, designed to mislead if you don’t know the meaning precisely. Quantitative reasoning vs straight math : Some questions test mathematical reasoning in verbal form, or require translating complicated word problems, not just applying formulas. Pacing is brutal : You must move quickly yet accurately. Getting stuck for too long on one question kills your chance to complete later ones. Uneven section difficulty : Some sections (Reading, Math Achievement) may include passages or multi-step problems that surprise students in terms of depth or wording. Essay matters (even though unscored) : Because the essay is forwarded to the schools, a poorly written, disorganized essay can hurt your qualitative impression even if it doesn’t affect your numeric score. Tips & strategies for ISEE Master vocabulary roots, prefixes, suffixes – helps with synonym questions and eliminating distractions. At Kate's Tutoring , we teach vocabulary via vocab builders in exactly the way the ISEE wants your student to learn them. Timed drills & full-length mocks – simulate test conditions so pacing becomes second nature Skip smartly – if a question is taking too long, mark it and return later Segment your reading approach – skim for structure first, then dive into detail for harder questions Retrospective review – always analyze wrong questions: was the error content, misreading, or timing? Essay “skeleton” practice – plan introduction, 2–3 supporting points, conclusion; practice with varying prompts SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test) — structure and strategies What is the SSAT? The SSAT is a widely used admissions test for private schools, covering grades 3–11 (Elementary, Middle, Upper levels). It has multiple testing formats: paper , SSAT at Home , and Prometric (test center) versions. The SSAT includes sections on Verbal, Quantitative (Math), Reading, plus a Writing Sample (not scored) and an Experimental section (not scored). For the Middle & Upper levels , there are two quantitative sections, one verbal, one reading, one writing sample, and one experimental. Scoring: In Upper and Middle SSAT, there is a penalty for incorrect answers (-¼ point per wrong answer), so you must be strategic about guessing. Raw section scores are scaled and combined into a total score (e.g. 1500–2400 for Upper levels) and percentiles are reported. Why SSAT is tricky & common pitfalls Wrong answer penalty : Because of the penalty , random guessing can backfire. Students who guess indiscriminately can drag down their scores. Analogies + synonyms : The Verbal section mixes analogy and synonym questions; both can be very abstract, relying on relationships rather than direct definitions. Dual math sections : The math workload is heavier (two quantitative parts), and questions can escalate in difficulty. Reading variety : Passages may come from multiple genres— fiction, social science, natural science — requiring flexible reading skills Experimental section anxiety : Because one section is unscored, some test-takers waste mental energy on that section anyway — don’t! Stamina : It’s a long exam (approx. 3h 10 min for Upper). Mental fatigue often causes careless mistakes in later parts. Tips & strategies for SSAT Guess only when odds are favorable – eliminate obviously wrong choices first Prioritize easy questions first in Verbal, since all verbal questions carry equal weight. Simulate full tests under timed conditions to build endurance Track weak areas via diagnostics and target those early in prep time Reading: skim first for structure, then dive into detail — don’t read word by word on first pass Memorize key math formulas & number properties so you aren’t deriving basics mid-exam Plan essay structure ahead — practice under time constraints so you don’t get stuck Schedule rest & recovery — avoid burnout, as performance drops sharply when fatigue sets in HSPT (High School Placement Test) — what to know The HSPT is frequently used by Catholic high schools and some parochial institutions, especially for students applying out of 8th grade. Tutor Relationships / Non-Solicitation To protect the integrity of our programs and the time of our tutors, enrolled students must remain within Kate’s Tutoring. Trial sessions are paid for at the time of booking. Because these slots are in high demand, trial sessions may not be rescheduled for convenience. In the event of a documented medical emergency or illness, please contact us as soon as possible; exceptions are made solely at the tutor's discretion. Recommended Lesson Duration For most of my students I recommend sessions of 1 hour in length. For my ACT and SAT test prep students, I require meetings in 2 hour blocks. Pricing is given per hour. For group classes, I recommend 90 minutes to 2 hours for most small groups. The more students in the class, the longer the meetings should be, generally. Rate Policy All rates, including hourly and packages, reflect both hidden costs and experience. Kate is a licensed teacher registered with the state and with the National Tutor's Association and has been tutoring for 15 years. Lesson prep, continuing education, overhead, and off-the-clock meetings/emails with parents are all hidden within the tutoring price. Kate's prices are also significantly lower for private, one on one tutoring than major test prep companies. The experience of their tutors is rarely comparable. To ensure fairness to all families and reflect the professionalism of our team, our rates are firm and non-negotiable. That said, I am more than happy to chat about small group rates if your student has a friend or two! Please note that rates quoted via email reflect pricing at time of quote and are subject to change. Refund Policy + Guarantee We have a No Refund Policy for all services. Refund requests, regardless of reason or advance notice, will not be honored. We're happy to schedule a trial hour (at a normal rate) to make sure we are a good fit but once a package is bought, there are no refunds. Exceptions may be made due to serious illness, death, or other emergency. Mastering Your Test Scores: Understanding Superscoring and Score Choice When applying to college, you want to present the strongest possible version of your academic profile. Standardized testing can be stressful, but two key policies—Superscoring and Score Choice—are designed to work in your favor by highlighting your best performances across multiple test dates. The table below provides a comprehensive look at the current policies for popular institutions, helping you strategize which scores to send and when to consider a retake. Key Terms to Know Superscoring: This is a student-friendly practice where colleges take your highest section scores from different test sittings to create a new, higher total score. For example, if your Math score was higher in March but your Reading score peaked in June, the college will combine those top marks. Score Choice: This policy, offered by the College Board and ACT, allows you to choose which specific test dates you send to colleges. However, individual colleges have the final say on whether they allow this or require you to submit every score on your record. Require All Scores: Some selective institutions explicitly ask to see your entire testing history to view your progress over time. Recommend All Scores: These schools suggest sending everything so their admissions team can ensure they are giving you the highest possible superscore. Using the Database Testing policies are currently in a state of flux, with many schools maintaining temporary "Test Optional" status for the 2025–2026 cycle. While we keep this list updated, always verify specific requirements on the official admissions website of your target schools before submitting your application. To find your school, use Command/Cntrl+F in your browser. Some institutions utilize a "hybrid" or "weak" superscoring model that sits between a strict highest-sitting policy and a traditional superscore. These schools say they review your highest sub-scores across your applications but they do not mathematically combine them from different test dates to generate a new, official composite score. In reality, this is usually not a big deal. Testing With us Kate's Tutoring is your guide to these exams. You're unique. Your testing prep and schedule should be unique too. We find educators who connect, inspire, and deliver. The "Anti-Tutor Mill" Philosophy (The Difference) Most tutoring companies are "tutor mills"—they prioritize volume over value. At Kate’s Tutoring, we take the opposite approach. We believe that personality fit is just as important as a perfect test score. Custom Matchmaking: We don't just assign a tutor based on a schedule. We match based on your student’s learning style, temperament, and goals. Mentorship, Not Just Instruction: Our tutors aren't just explaining formulas; they are teaching students how to learn, helping them overcome anxiety and build lifelong confidence. About Kate's Experience Kate knows what it looks like when a kid gets stuck. For the last fifteen years, she has worked with bright, overwhelmed students who are capable of more but stuck in cycles of stress, inconsistency, or low confidence. And she's watched those students transform. Her job isn’t just to raise grades or test scores (though she does that quickly): it’s to change how students approach learning so they become independent, capable, and actually confident in their abilities. Kate graduated with honors from an elite school in Maryland in just three years and then did it again, graduating cum laude from Boston University in just three years with a Bachelors in History and an academic scholarship. In addition to thousands of hours of one-on-one work, Kate brings experience from both elite private and public school classrooms, as well as leading test prep companies. She holds a California teaching credential (CTC #120563373) and is a member of the American Tutor Association. She specializes in the SAT, ACT, ISEE/SSAT test prep, the GRE, as well as a bevy of academic subjects - especially history, English, and math . Whether a student is trying to catch up, keep up, or pull ahead, her approach is tailored to the way they actually think and learn. In 2012, after years inside large tutoring and test prep companies, Kate saw firsthand how “one-size-fits-all” programs consistently missed the mark. She founded Kate’s Tutoring to do the opposite: build individualized, high-touch programs designed around each student. Her background in the performing arts shapes her teaching style in a way students immediately feel. Sessions are engaging, dynamic, and highly interactive, designed not just to explain material but to help students think critically and solve problems on their own. The result is a rare combination: sessions students don’t hate and measurable academic progress. When she's not teaching, Ms. Hackett lives with the best dog in the world (sorry other dogs), two cats, and sometimes foster kittens. She enjoys hiking, camping, swimming, reading, and writing. Her sessions are conducted primarily online, allowing her to work with students wherever they are. If you have concerns about virtual tutoring, please reach out - we'd love to assuage your fears! Do you accept cancellations? Kate's Tutoring has a no-cancellation policy and a 48-hour rescheduling policy. Lessons canceled without 48 hour prior notice will be charged at the full rate. If sessions are rescheduled, a makeup session must be arranged within 7 days or those missed hours are lost. I understand that this can be a steep price to pay but this policy has proven to be necessary. It is ultimately the parent's responsibility to make sure the student is prepared and on time. The sooner you cancel, the sooner I can try to fill that time slot and prevent losing my income for the day. Fees are based upon the student's ability to attend all lessons as stipulated in the schedule; no discounts or refunds will be given for lessons not attended by the student. All sessions are to be completed within the monthly billing cycle; i.e., if you reschedule in December, the lesson MUST be made up in December and does not forward into Jan/Feb. Makeup sessions must be scheduled within 7 days of the missed lesson, otherwise that session fee is forfeit. Exceptions to this policy are solely at the tutor's discretion. If the tutor must cancel, we'll reschedule at your convenience. How much is tutoring? You can peruse our rates here . If our prices are outside your price range, please consider our Semi-Private sessions to work with a friend at a discount. We also offer limited Scholarship Opportunities . Do you have a guarantee? If you are for any reason unsatisfied, please reach out to us. We do not offer any service guarantees but we're more than happy to work with you to alleviate your concerns, including a tutor re-match offer. If you do not believe we're a good fit for you, we do not offer refunds, but you are free to leave at the end of your month! How does virtual tutoring work? We use Zoom, Google Meet, or Teams for online tutoring and whiteboards for visual problem solving. Our tutors are well versed in creating engaging virtual sessions -- we've found the move to be seamless. Without hesitation, I can say that online sessions are as efficient (if not moreso) and productive as in person. We have more info about our online sessions here and we're always happy to answer any questions. What subjects do you tutor? • All subjects for elementary and high school, including AP Chem, History, English, Calculus, etc. • College-level courses including history, English, maths, and sciences. • Essay Assistance • Organizational and Executive Functioning Coaching • SAT, AP, ACT, ISEE, and other standardized tests. I need a tutor today. Is that possible? Maybe. We would charge an emergency rate for the session and will have an easier time accommodating a virtual session. Kate is available for direct bookings, but her calendar is booked out 2+ days in advance. Please email to get on that schedule. Direct bookings are considered ad-hoc and cannot be rescheduled or refunded. What is each session like? I get this question a LOT and I absolutely understand why BUT! I think any tutor worth your time is going to tell you this: It depends entirely on the student. I can't answer that accurately until I meet your child. And here's why: my lessons are not boiler plate for all kids. If your daughter knows how to write essays and doesn't need help with that for her ACT, we won't focus on it. If your son is struggling with limits but knows how to FOIL, I'm not going to waste his time. Or yours! So let's get to know each other a little and we'll take it from there! Do you offer group tutoring? We love it! In groups of five or less! We do not ever host more than 5 students at a time because we believe in the benefits of individual attention; we also believe that teaching strengthens comprehension, so if your child has friends they'd like to tag in, we love that. You can read more about our semi-private sessions here . What are the credentials of your tutors? Our tutors have university degrees and professional diplomas. They are professional, qualified instructors. You can view each tutor's profile here . Will I see the same tutor every session? We make every effort to make sure you work with your preferred tutor for as long as possible. For over 12 years, we've helped students navigate the application process. We got you. The Basics Get at least a full round of testing in by the end of your junior year. Most students take the PSAT in the spring of sophomore year or fall of junior. By the end of junior year (so, May) you should have sat for the ACT, AP tests, and/or the SAT. You can retake any test in the fall / winter of senior year. You will most likely want to take your entrance exam (SAT or ACT) THREE TIMES: spring junior, fall senior x 2. The test dates for the SAT are here. The test dates for the ACT are here. Which test? We generally recommend the ACT. You don't need both. Remember that the ACT allows you to superscore . However, this is highly subjective to each student so we recommend getting in touch with us. The same high standards. Split between 2–5 students. Semi-private sessions aren't a compromise — they're a different format that works exceptionally well for the right students. If your student thrives with a peer alongside them, benefits from hearing someone else's questions, or is working toward the same goal as a friend or sibling, semi-private tutoring can be just as effective as one-on-one — at a significantly lower cost per family. Who This Works Best For Semi-private sessions are a strong fit when: Students are working toward the same goal. Two friends both prepping for the SAT, or siblings tackling the same subject — shared focus makes sessions efficient for everyone. Your student learns well with peers. Some students open up more, stay more engaged, and push themselves harder when there's someone else in the room. Private rates aren't feasible right now. We'd rather keep a great student learning than lose them to budget constraints. Semi-private sessions make that possible without cutting corners on tutor quality How It Works We keep groups small — 2 to 5 students maximum. Sessions run online via Zoom, Google Meet, or Teams, so students can join from anywhere. Every semi-private session is led by the same vetted, credentialed tutors who run our private sessions. There's no separate roster, no lower tier. Pricing varies based on group size, subject, and tutor level. [Inquire for a quote →] One thing to know: we don't form the groups ourselves. You'll need to come with your own small group of 2–5 students ready to go. If you're looking for a solo enrollment option, private tutoring is the better fit. Designed for 2-5 students, rates vary based on group size, tutor level, and subject. Rates are displayed per student and are our starting rates. For an accurate quote, please inquire for rates . Ready to Get Started? Here's how enrollment works for semi-private sessions: Send an inquiry with all families CC'd, including times that work for everyone. Each household creates a profile on our tutoring platform. Kate matches your group with the right tutor and generates individual invoices. Once all payments are received, your sessions are confirmed. A few things to know before you book: session details are final once booked — no changes to group members, subjects, or tests, and missed sessions cannot be rescheduled. This keeps things fair and consistent for all families in the group. Learn More Standard ACT & SAT Preparation 30 hours Our most recommended starting point. Enough time to build real strategy, work through weaknesses thoroughly, and take at least one full practice test under timed conditions before the real thing. Once weekly over 15 weeks is ideal for this tier. Learn More Full Prep 40 hours The gold standard. Concepts sink in deeper, confidence builds steadily, and students arrive on test day having seen virtually every question type the exam can throw at them. Ideal for students starting 3–4 months out. To make this happen, we move at a rigorous pace: The Schedule: Twice-weekly 2-hour sessions. The Commitment: Plan for a "2-to-1" ratio—for every hour we spend tutoring, expect about 2 hours of independent practice to reinforce the strategies we cover. The Goal: A targeted, high-impact "bump" to your score through immersion. LONG TERM PREP This is the gold standard for mastery. By spreading the work out, we reduce stress and allow concepts to truly sink in. The Schedule: One 2-hour session per week. "My daughter loved working with Sadie. She worked on her SAT and essay prep. Her jump 80 points from Sept SAT to Oct she was so happy and proud about. it was a great end to their time working together. highly recommend." - Harriet F. - Parent - Los Angeles, CA "Thank you for a great session yesterday. [Student] felt...very happy. It motivated her to get in shape and she studied her book for 2 hours after your session. She plans to continue today to catch up and review. So yay! I'm so happy she's got you on her team!" - Alex G. - Parent - Los Angeles, CA "I had a wonderful experience with this tutoring service. I was studying for my CSET 2 and was struggling to find a good tutor. Thankfully, I found Kate's Tutoring, and she connected me with an amazing tutor. Kate also worked with me on a payment plan, which allowed me to get tutoring when I needed it. I absolutely recommend finding a tutor here—they are amazing!" - Emily C. - Adult student - Glendale, CA "Our family has been working with Kate for years. We initially sought her help for our eldest’s test prep, and she was phenomenal. Our son scored in the 30s on his ACT and got accepted to a top-tier school. During the pandemic, Kate kept our younger kids on track. We feel so lucky to have found someone as versatile as Kate." - KR - Parent - Glendale, CA "Kate came highly recommended, and she lived up to every expectation. My son, who is shy and reserved, clicked right away with Kate. His test scores on both the ISEE and the HSPT were excellent. Kate is very easy to connect with, and she always responded promptly to any questions I had. I am extremely pleased with the results!" - Daniel T. - Parent - Burbank, CA "Kate is a great tutor! She helped our older daughter with test prep and has been working with our younger daughter on general school work during this period of remote learning which has been really helpful. We highly recommend her services." - Garret W. - Parent - Eagle Rock, CA "From our daughter... Kate is teaching me this thing that, when you don't know something, you just need to keep writing. You don't stop even when you don't know the answer or you don't want to write. If you just keep writing... that's then it comes to you. She's right. It does. I like Kate. She's teaching me a bunch of stuff." - Student - Burbank, CA "Kate [and her tutors were] super helpful tutoring me through calculus. They are incredibly reliable, smart, and helpful. Would definitely recommend." - Riley H. - Twin Cities, MN "I can't recommend Kate enough. She helped my daughter improve her ACT score after we saw no improvement with a large test prep company. Kate knows these tests inside and out and provided great strategies for the individual challenges my daughter faced. One-on-one tutoring with Kate made all the difference!" - Michelle C. - Parent - Los Angeles, CA "Kate's by far one of the best tutors in the area! She’s extremely personable and accommodating, and her tutoring skills are unmatched. Kate connected with my son right away and made learning fun, which led to a significant improvement in his grades. I've recommended her to all my friends!" - George G. - Parent "Kate helped my daughter achieve a 33 score in her ACT on the first attempt! I would definitely recommend her to assist with test taking tips and essay writing under exam conditions. Thank you Kate!" - Lucy H. - Parent - Glendale, CA "Kate is so great! She has a fantastic blend of smarts, ability to quickly connect and hone in on where the learning needs to take place. She worked with my son to prep for middle level ISEE. He made so much progress over the time he worked with Kate. She was really easy to coordinate with and she was flexible with schedule and location. She was always well prepared and got to work with my son within a minute of sitting down. She's a talented teacher especially with writing, reading comprehension, vocabulary (but covered math really well too) - pushes for a high bar, while remaining positive, keeping a sense of humor and keeping it real (she doesn't let any time get wasted in excuses or fussing around). Our family had a really great experience with her. High recommends for Kate!" - Nicole L. - Parent - Los Angeles, CA "Kate has been tutoring my son since January, and we are extremely happy with her. She is very professional and knowledgable in a variety of subject areas. I originally sought her help because my son, a 7th grader, needed assistance with time management, organization, and writing. She has been super helpful in these areas. She has been able to help him focus his writing and researching skills. Additionally, she has great ideas for organization and time management. My son really enjoys working with her, and he feels that it is definitely helping him stay on top of his assignments. Working with a middle schooler can be daunting, but Kate is very patient and relates well to kids. I would highly recommend Kate to anyone looking for a private tutor." - Jean P. - Parent - North Hollywood, CA "My 6th graders were struggling in math and language arts when we moved here from another state this fall. Fast forward 5 months later and they both feel way more confident AND their grades have improved! For me, I am most pleased with the new confidence and that they both go to tutoring without complaining. It really has taken a lot of pressure off of mom and dad. Thanks Ms. Kate. I took a chance off the internet based on your reviews and I am very pleased I did." - Rebecca A. - Parent - Chicago, IL Schedule a Consultation POPULAR SERVICES SAT ACT ISEE HSPT SSAT CSET AP Test Prep Academic Tutoring INFO Tutoring Resources FAQ ACT + SAT Timelines Testimonials © 2026 Kate's Tutoring Terms of Service / Privacy Policy ACTION Request Consultation Contact Us bottom of page
